WikiCup 2014 April newsletter

Round 3 of the 2014 WikiCup has just begun; 32 competitors remain. Pool G's Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Round 2's highest scorer, with a large number of featured picture credits. In March/April, he restored star charts from Urania's Mirror, lithographs of various warships (such as SMS Gefion) and assorted other historical media. Second overall was Pool E's Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), whose featured list Silver certificate (United States) contains dozens of scans of banknotes recently promoted to featured picture status. Third was Pool G's United States ChrisGualtieri (submissions) who has produced a large number of good articles, many, including Falkner Island, on Connecticut-related topics. Other successful participants included Rhodesia Cliftonian (submissions), who saw three articles (including the top-importance Ian Smith) through featured article candidacies, and Washington, D.C. Caponer (submissions), who saw three lists (including the beautifully-illustrated list of plantations in West Virginia) through featured list candidacies. High-importance good articles promoted this round include narwhal from Canada Reid, iain james (submissions), tiger from Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and The Lion King from Minas Gerais Igordebraga (submissions). We also saw our first featured topic points of the competition, awarded to Nepal Czar (submissions) and Indiana Red Phoenix (submissions) for their work on the Sega Genesis topic. No points have been claimed so far for good topics or featured portals.

192 was our lowest qualifying score, again showing that this WikiCup is the most competitive ever. In previous years, 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) or 100 (2010) secured a place in Round 3. Pool H was the strongest performer, with all but one of its members advancing, while only the two highest scorers in Pools G and F advanced. At the end of June, 16 users will advance into the semi-finals. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Help!

Illustration from Christine de Pisan, Le livre des trois vertus; author is kept from rest by the Three Virtues. Boston Public Library, Special Collections, MS f. Med. 101. France, s. XVmed. Christine de Pizan, Le livre des trois vertus, in French.

Hi Ealdgyth, comment ca va? I could use your help, or maybe that of one of your friendly talk page stalkers. I am working on The Treasure of the City of Ladies, and this article has an illustration from a manuscript in the Boston Public Libary that I'd love to put in it--the Three Virtues that helped Christine write the Book of the City of Ladies now pulling her out of bed to write the sequel. For the life of me I can't find that image anywhere on the internetz (well, I found one, of terrifically low quality). Do you know how I might get my paws on such an image for use in my article? Thanks in advance, Drmies (talk) 03:46, 4 May 2014 (UTC)

Either contact the library directly or look for the image in some books - likely its available in a book somewhere. (I do not believe I have it in mine though.) Ealdgyth - Talk 12:37, 4 May 2014 (UTC)
Is this the same scene in a different MS? Yngvadottir (talk) 16:58, 4 May 2014 (UTC)
Yes it is; can we steal it? Ealdgyth, I emailed the Boston Public Library but all I got so far is an out-of-office message. Drmies (talk) 15:44, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
I'm not sure how to read this. "La réutilisation non commerciale de ces contenus est libre et gratuite dans le respect de la législation en vigueur et notamment du maintien de la mention de source" sounds positive, but it hardly spells out CC-3.0 or something like that. Drmies (talk) 15:46, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
I'm looking at this image on Commons, also from the BNF, but by way of the Web Gallery of Art. Still, the Commons material leads me to think we could upload the image, but I would hate to be wrong. Should I ask someone from Commons? Hekerui? Nick? Sphilbrick? (Apologies for cluttering up your talk page, Ealdgyth, but it's all for women's lib.) Drmies (talk) 16:58, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
All the French says is that non-commercial use is permitted providing the source of the image is mentioned. I've run into this issue before with respect to a 19th-century painting reproduced on a Norwegian museum's site with a copyright notice. I nominated it for deletion on Commons for that reason and was informed, as the template on the image you link states, that WMF takes the position that such images are non-copyrightable. So we should be ok, but you might want to talk to a Commons admin to be absolutely sure. Pumpkin Sky hasn't been around there in a while, but I see you pinging other folks above. Yngvadottir (talk) 17:06, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
I received permission to use the Boston image. I hope I'm filing all the paperwork correctly on Commons. Someone feel free to tweak; I have an email from the Keeper of Special Collections. Drmies (talk) 16:36, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

Seen this? They're back Sunday night - you might suggest things for them to do. Johnbod (talk) 17:00, 11 May 2014 (UTC)

Haroldus II

Your undo of Harold II was nonsensical. He was the direct descendant of Eduardus Confessor and his Latin name, Haroldus, was very important for reference. Please approve the revision. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TomokoKuroki (talkcontribs) 18:03, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

Uh. No. Harold's not a descendant of Edward the Confessor. Latin names aren't important for English kings (see William the Conqueror, Henry I of England, Stephen of England, Henry II of England - all Featured Articles and which lack any Latin name in the lead line.) Latin names aren't important at all for Anglo-Saxon or English kings. Ealdgyth - Talk 18:07, 12 May 2014 (UTC)
Tsk, tsk. Wrong again. Merely look at documents from the period and the Bayeaux Tapestry. Harold II was a special case, I'm afraid. On that note, perhaps we can reach a compromise? --TomokoKuroki (talk) 19:48, 12 May 2014 (UTC)
ALL documents from the continent and many English documents were in Latin. So, of course the Bayeux Tapestry uses Latin. It uses Latin for all the writing on it. This doesn't mean we give the Latin forms at all. Ealdgyth - Talk 20:11, 12 May 2014 (UTC)
"ALL documents" I guess the Eastern Roman Empire does not exist to you, then? Anyway, you're really sensationalizing this. I know a lot about medieval Latin, and all I ask is this single citation and name be added for a very special king. It's informational and accurate. Sigh... --TomokoKuroki (talk) 20:22, 12 May 2014 (UTC)
But we do not do this for all the other medieval kings - see Pepin the Short or Alfonso VII of León and Castile. An exception is Charlemagne, but that is because it is a special case - Charlemagne's usual English name derives from his latin name. There is no such specialness for Harold. He should be treated like all the other medieval rulers. Ealdgyth - Talk 20:42, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

Revert

No problem reverting. There is a problem inside these bunch of references that causes the page not to render correctly in WPCleaner. Maybe there is an unbalanced bracket I am missing? Removing whitespace was only to test that. -- Magioladitis (talk) 13:10, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

No worries. I'm just old enough that the spaces help me edit. Ealdgyth - Talk 13:41, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

Need NPOV eyes

On California Chrome. I got the article to GA but have since become a raging #Chromie and have lost all perspective. Need copyediting eyes and comments to keep things under control over there. I also asked Corbett but he's not a horse person. The two of you together kept me in line with Oxbow, and it's Preakness time again... and BTW, Oxbow is TFA on Preakness day. Just FWIW. Montanabw(talk) 01:55, 15 May 2014 (UTC)

Just a ping to ask if you could be so kind as to continue watchlisting California Chrome and feel free to copyedit at your discretion. It's had over 200K hits since the first of the month and I'm kind of freaking out; had some real crummy-if-well-intentioned edits on Preakness day that were further messed up by everyone else trying to fix it at once. I want to hold the article to FAC standards even though it will be a while before an FAC push is advisable due to the ever-changing news on this horse. Montanabw(talk) 01:12, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

Chrome

Hi E, I just put California Chrome up for peer review here. I'm pinging you because I'd like you to take a look at the pedigree stuff. I had to use allbreed to locate some of the way-back lines and as I know it can be problematic, I wanted to be sure to have someone who knows TB research better than myself to check to be sure it is correct. (I think equineline is reliable, just slowerand limited - you can go quite a ways back via that site, a few generations at a time, but it stops after a time) Anything else you want to comment on, feel free, but the pedigree stuff is where I'd particularly value your feedback. Thanks Montanabw(talk) 07:05, 12 June 2014 (UTC)

Your best place to ask would be Susan at http://quarterhorserecord.com/ - I really don't have much on "modern" TBs, and to be honest I'm utterly swamped in RL right now. Ealdgyth - Talk 12:41, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
No worries, I just figured you could do a quick read of the section and flag any problems. I think the content is accurate, I'm just more fretting about FAC. Montanabw(talk) 22:05, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
