If so, you're the copyright holder and all is well (although you should state that for the record on Talk:Bootleg recording. If not, you can still add the information, but you need to rephrase it in your own words -- facts aren't copyrightable, but one person's particular expression of them is. I know this is a rather ironic concern, given the subject matter, but Wikipedia doesn't infringe on others' copyrights. Identity politics

You made some useful edits on the Identity Politics page, as it seemed to be, but you were working with an old archived that seemed to have been inadvertently restored. Should we be having this discussion on the talk page for the article? Anyhow,yes it is perfectly reasonable to have contrary views included in the article, but the "criticisms" posted by an anonymous editor some months back were part of generally personal and unsourced attack on what the editor seemed to think were separatist and nationalist movements. After trying to improve it, I deleted the whole long article and posted what seemed to me at least a reasonable beginning, with an accurate sourced definition. The problem I have with the "criticisms" you have restored is that they don't entirely make sense to me, except the well known criticisms from the "center" by Arthur Schlesinger, and seem to reflect mostly the author's bias. I don't know of any source for the supposed "right" and "radical left" remarks. (I teach a seminar on the subject of national identity, at Vermont Law School, and have some sense of what is out there in the published literature.) But all that being said, I suggest we leave the article as it is (maybe someone else will fix it . . . ?) and I will try to find some time to post a sourced summary of the actual debate.Sheldon Novick 18:52, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Article protection

Hi. I noticed you put {{sprotect}} on Ben Cousins, thinking that protected the article. It does not; it's something that gets put there manually after protection as an indicator of its protected status. It has no effect on the page's protection status. You have to be an administrator to protect an article. If you need administrator intervention, you can always leave me (or one of the other administrators) a talk page message. Zep article, American or UK English?

This is a copy of the post I put up on the Zep's aricle's talk page. I don't want to get into a revert war with you. I have a feeling you agree that they're tiresome. I'm hoping there's someway to work this out; or to find out how it can be worked out.

@Edelmand Given the bewildering number of Wikipedia "policies" and "suggestions" and maybes, it's hard to know every single policy, so if I err'd against one of these policies, my bad.

And, re-reading my own post, I realize that my tone was too strident. I was having a bad day. Of course, that's no excuse for disrupting the consensus (or however it's put in wiki-speak).

I do, however, have an counter-argument to your main contention:

Since Led Zeppelin were an English band, it would seem appropriate to retain the UK English

Of course, this is true. Zep, however, became world-famous and hugely successful because of their popularity in the United States. They did come from England but they made their careers in the US, selling over 100,000,000 albums (according to the RIAA). In fact, they are the second bestselling group after The Beatles; and fourth bestselling artist after The Beatles, Elvis and Garth Brooks (US stats).

Nearly all of their music was heavily influenced by American blues, rock, rockabilly and other American "roots" music.

Also, during almost the entire duration of the band's existence, they lived in the US (because of England's insane tax laws which confiscated 98% of a musician's income back then!).

I believe this makes the use of American English the appropriate choice.

Clearly, we have a dispute that's obviously larger than just this article. I believe that the entire article should be rewritten to comply US English standards.

How can this resolved professionally? In other words, without a revert war?

Bogus claims made on Led Zeppelin page

Edelmand, you may be interested in that I've found the original album review by John Mendelshon for Led Zeppelin I.

The wikipedia article then states:

"When Led Zeppelin's debut album was released, it received generally positive reviews. However, John Mendelsohn of Rolling Stone magazine criticised the band for plagiarising music, notably "Black Mountain Side" from Bert Jansch's "Blackwaterside" (though Jansch himself acknowledges the song as being traditional) and the riff from "Your Time Is Gonna Come" from Traffic's "Dear Mr. Fantasy". He also accused the band of mimicking black artists, and showing off. This marked the beginning of a long rift between the band and the magazine, with Led Zeppelin rejecting later requests for interviews and cover stories as their level of success escalated."

If you read the Rolling Stone article it's quite obvious the claims made in the Wikipedia article appears to be bogus. Nowhere in his review does he even mention Jansch or Traffic by name. Zeppelin Single Classifications

Hi Edelmand — I was looking around in the Led Zeppelin template and saw the list of singles. I checked each one of them and added the Single Infobox where needed. However, I noticed that the B-sides to the singles in the template, such as "Communication Breakdown" and "Living Loving Maid (She's Just a Woman)", are listed as singles as well, but are not included in the template. Later B-sides such as "Hot Dog" and "The Crunge" are not classified as singles with a Single Infobox either. Since you've done a great deal of work with the Zeppelin pages, what should we do about this? Should we list the B-sides as normal songs instead of singles? Copyright concerns

Hi. In investigating the listed copyright problem for Hunt Armory, I noted that you seemed not quite clear on the extent to which text may duplicate a source under US copyright law. While it seems obvious that you didn't intentionally violate copyright there, the editor who noted that the material had not been altered enough was correct in advising you that changing a few words at best creates a derivative work, which remains under copyright protection. There is no clear-cut rule in the US as to how many words in a row constitute copyrighted text, which is unfortunate as it would be a lot easier to explain if there were! Any time you duplicate a run of words from a source, you need not only to cite it (which you did), but to enclose it in quotation marks. There are exceptions to this--like lists of ingredients or contents. (see this if you want more details on that.) "Apt phrase" plagiarism or copyright violation refers to the use of a part of a sentence without proper attribution (including quotation marks). The only time we may directly copy a run of words from another source is when it is truly part of general usage, and that can be very hard to identify.

There are several such "apt phrase" usages in the article as it was. "Until the Pittsburgh Civic Arena was built in 1961, the Hunt Armory was the largest auditorium in Pittsburgh and was used frequently for concerts and political events." (From the article) "Until the Civic Arena was built in 1961, it was easily the largest auditorium in Pittsburgh and was in demand for concerts and political events, many of historical significance." (from the source). While there is some revision, there is not enough without quotation marks to validate so many runs of identical text. There were also numerous cases of direct duplication in the article. Take the following two sentences as examples: "Hunt Armory was built in 1916 to house the First Battalion of the 107th Field Artillery regiment of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard." "Hunt Armory was built in 1916 to house the First Battalion of the 107th Field Artillery regiment of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard." Such duplication without quotation marks is legally prohibited. It isn't plagiarism, because there's no intellectual dishonesty there--no effort to hide your source--but it is a copyright concern, and it isn't one that we could simply address by adding quotation marks, as there are limited to Fair use allowances.

I note that there were also some concerns raised about your duplication of material from the article The London Rock and Roll Show to The London Rock and Roll Show (film). Since you removed the bot notice without addressing those concerns, I don't know if you are aware why this is problematic. Strange as it may seem, copyright material from one Wikipedia article to another can also constitute plagiarism and copyright violation. Our contributors release material under GFDL, which allows their work to be redistributed and modified in any way, commercially or otherwise, so long as they receive credit. When we merge material from one article to another—whether this involves removing it from the source or simply duplicating it—we must note the source article in edit summary so that future contributors can see who authored that material. When you established the new article, here, you inadvertently lent the appearance that you were the writer of the entire body of text, when some of it in fact seems to have been introduced by User:23skidoo, here. In addition to noting the source in the destination article, it is also necessary to make a note in edit summary at the source article in case it might inadvertently be deleted later, separating the content from its author history.

I have addressed that in these two articles. If you're aware of any other Wikipedia articles to which you may contributed content taken from other articles, please follow up there with a null edit to note the source in edit summary.

New Barbarians at Largo or Landover?

hello Edelmand - i'm curious about your recent edit to The New Barbarians article, since their Maryland concert is listed in most sources as having taken place at the Capital Center (not Centre) Arena in Largo MD, not Landover. i'm not an expert on Maryland geography but i gather Largo and Landover are close neighbours - have the boundaries perhaps changed since 1979, or is what "most sources say" simply inaccurate, or ... ??? thanks for any clarity you could offer. A user has created a duplicate article Best of Led Zeppelin, which is clearly a duplication of an existing article Early Days and Latter Days. I get a feeling you've also been stalking my edits - The Led Zeppelin published sources for example as well as my recent edits in Peter Grant.. And the edits specifically referring to in my first comment was the "Allegations of Plagiarism" section in the main article - it now occupies a third of the entire article with the bulk of it being quotes added by you. You very rarely add anything else to the article apart for the plagiarism allegations both in the main articles and on the individual song articles as well as the debauchery claims such as the shark incident. Most books cover that in a single paragraph - you've made into a major article. As if one incident like that dominated Led Zeppelin's history, which is incorrect. On the surface you come across as a Led Zeppelin fan but when you scratch underneath a lot of the edits appear to be attacks on the band. MegX (talk) 01:15, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

That's exactly my point though - the quotes have expanded twice the size a section that need only be a single paragraph. Anything else could be expanded on the song articles themselves, which is what was previously discussed on the Talk page (including removing that section altogether and merging them into the song articles themselves, which a minority of editors reverted without comment). Addressing the specifics of the band response along with the accusations would be be better off moved to the individual song articles, rather than the main article. You think you know a lot about Led Zeppelin but the fact you use only a limited amount of sources, and the majority of your edits are no more than adding negative quotes indicates your knowledge is shallow. Fudged move

I want to let you know you have incorrectly moved Aborignal Land Rights in Australia. If you type "wp:move" into the search box and read about it, you will find out the little down arrow to the left of the search box contains a move command. Since you cannot now move the page because you have created a new page there instead, you will have to wait for an administrator to delete that page and then they or you will have to move the page. WP:MOVE will help and specifically WP:CPMV provides instructions for fixing it. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
