Welcome

Hello and welcome to Wikipedia!

Just a few quick tips:

  • Our Tutorial explains how to edit; you can experiment in the test area.
  • We have help pages, and if they don't help (can happen :-), post a question at the Help Desk.
  • Remember that we strive to have unbiased articles.
  • Eventually, you might want to read our Manual of Style and Policies and Guidelines.
  • Use the "Preview" button below the edit box! It helps you catch layout, format, and spelling errors before saving.
  • To sign your messages (to talk pages, for instance—like I do below), add four tildes (~~~~) to your posts. The software will replace them by your signature and a time stamp when you save the page.

Anyway, have fun improving this encyclopedia! Lupo 11:49, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Latinus

[edit]

Hi! I am a Romanian and I've found you on the Aromanian Wikipedia. I would like to ask you how have you started to learn Aromanian because I would like to do this too (I actually understand many words because it has a lot in commun with my language). Are you living in Greece near an Aromanian community? MariusMa

responded by e-mail

Hellos Latinus. I am still not sure how the system of responding works (do I respond on my page or on yours?) So at the risk of repeating myself, you had a point about Greeks UK and I made relevant changes with explanations. Also, you may know the answer. I have singled out some entries to 'watch', but I am not alerted of all the changes to those entries. Is there something else one has to do? Regards, Politis 13:22, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Getaway

[edit]

The entry I edited was "The Getaway (novel)" which is for the NOVEL written by Jim Thompson. The video game already has an entry: The Getaway (video game). It isn't vandilizing to correct inaccurate entries. 70.60.152.14

response

No problem at all. I apologize for getting annoyed and I understand the alarms going off for removing content. I checked with the video game page to make sure that all the same info was there otherwise I intended to move some of the text...but it appeared to be exactly the same entry so I simply deleted the inaccurate one. Thanks for taking to time to clear this up. 70.60.152.14

Re. your user page

[edit]

Hi, Latinus! Of course, I'll tamper a little bit with your user page and see what I can do. You don't appear to have much material to work on, however, so I think I'll just make a layout that you can eventually fill with more material as you see fit. Just gimme a day or two, please, since I like to experiment before presenting you the final version. It's the least I can do to thank you for reverting that vandalism on my user page =) Cheers! – Phædriel tell me - 03:34, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Latinus, your request is ready, hopefully. I've made a new design for your user page, which you can find and copy here - I hope you like it! An alternative version without the toolbox on top is also ready, and you can get it here. Please, feel free to pick the one you like the most. If you want me to make some changes to either of them, just let me know. Enjoy! :) Kisses, – Phædriel tell me - 23:30, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vlach language

[edit]

You wrote: Pagină meu pi Uichipedia Anglica easti Latinus. (Retrieved from "http://roa-rup.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Latinus")

To correct your Vlach: It's not pagina meu but 'pagina mea' (ună pagină/o pagină in Romanian and Vlach) or 'pagina amea' if you wish. But you can say omlu meu or omlu ameu('my man'). In Romanian omul meu or omul a(l) meu in Provençal lu omu etc. The Vlachs of Greece often use the word 'frândză' for 'page' (selidha in Greek) or for 'newspaper' (Not that there is a Vlach language newspaper in Greece anyway!). But you can use the posh(er) sounding pagina too.

In Romanian and Vlach 'frândză' or 'frunză' mean strictly speaking 'leaf'. (fila in Greek) too. There is a famous Vlach song of Metsovo whcih starts with the words : 'Frândză vierde di sicară' (Green leaf of rye)

The word has in English too a related meaning: leaflet . It seems that long time ago the people were scribling on 'leaves' (on papyrus, or paper if you wish). There we are: the circle is full. Tsiftiteli 10:09, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tt1

[edit]

Hey, Latinus - it seems the Tt1 and Roitr aren't the same person. I don't know if he should be reverted everytime or not, though. Thanks for helping, but I am absolutely confused now.

Take care, εγκυκλοπαίδεια* 14:58, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think he's the same person because he makes the same edits and makes similar mistakes when he has to speak himself, not copy&paste from his bizarre sourcess. And his usual edits consists of adding and defending some patent nonsense - I think it does more harm and in my view outweighs his rightful edits where he manages not to trash something in process.
You shouldn't be concerned that he uses many IP addresses, it's a common situation because many people 'dial-in' (PPPOE) to their providers for both DSL (phone line) and direct Ethernet (twisted pair) connections, and many providers and public libraries use proxies and NAT. This makes it almost impossible to ban unregistered people just by their IP adress though... Maybe it's time for a strict 'register-to-edit' requirement. --DmitryKo 00:54, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I suspect that User:Nixer, User:Roitr, User:Alexr23, and User:Tt1 are probably all the same person. In addition, the user typically will log on under anon ip addresses to circumvent the Three Revert Rule and avoid blocks. I should also add, User:Alexr23 appears to be spreading false accusations against you for violation of the 3RR. The edit histories make him out to be a liar and Imwould suggest that such behavior is reported to other admins for longer blocks and/or bans. -Husnock 22:13, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Latinus for advice .I shall necessarily will be back tomorrow and we all it discuss. I saw that you not against the compromise version and you have not returned its. Thanks still times. And if in these my version there are small discrepancies, that we shall discuss them-Tt1 23:01, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

For Husnock! To continue to prove to you that I and they not the same user - it is useless though it not the truth. It is the truth that my edit history is similar to them edit history, but it is not identical and it not the proof that I it they. I not in all with them agree. You continue to think on another - this your right.I have a question to you? If I not to do a trouble is more than the Three Revert Rule, you again continue to return me or not? I have is right to edit this page or not? I can supplement this page or not? If you are acting only as an admin, dealing with Three Revert Rule infringements, as you wrote earlier, that I can understand you, but if you have something against me or hate me I can not understand you and it against rules of this encyclopedia!-Tt1 22:00, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

For Latinus and other! Please look my new compromise variant http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparative_military_ranks_of_World_War_II/temp . Please write what discrepancies and mistakes in your opinion is in it. Thank you.-Tt1 22:00, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No source tag

[edit]

Instead of using the {{unknown}}, use the no source tags on images, with all the parameters like {{no license|month=January|day=28|year=2006}}. Otherwise, the images are just thrown into Category:Images with unknown source as of unknown date 2006 instead of by exact date. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 19:32, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Aww, my dear Latinus, you are way too kind =) To be completely honest to you, I haven't given much thought to the idea of an eventual RfA... it's too soon, and I still have much to learn. Finding kind and beautiful people like you is the greatest reward I could ever hope for - and that's all it matters to me now.
Just out of curiosity, are you Greek, Latinus? I know you're from Earth ;) but I am hoping for a little more precision... if I may? Kisses! - Phædriel tell me - 00:27, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Latinus,

Inanna is some Turkish girl still in high school who lives in Northern Cyprus. She originally started editng Wikipedia by changing the numbers of all these articles to favor Turkey. After she got a screen name, she has been bocked quite a few times for violating the 3 revert rule and also using sockpuppets when she was blocked. Her opinions on almost everything is the Turkish POV, and she has openly stated that she hates ALL Greeks. She has also threated to hack people's computers. Need I say anything more? ;) --Khoikhoi 01:12, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

For example, as I write this comment, Inanna is using a sockpuppet to add extreme POV to the Turkish Cypriot article. Perhaps you could help me out. Thanks. --Khoikhoi 01:31, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Adminship

[edit]

Hey, I noticed you occasionally nominate wikipedians for Adminship, so I'd just be interested in knowing what sort of standards I would have to reach to have a decent go at an RfA. For your convenience please use the links to my userpage, user talk page, Contribs, and edit count. Thanks for looking into this for me, Werdna648T/C\@ 11:12, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, from my experience, the absolute minimum is 1000 edits, with most wikipedians voting support after the 1500 mark. Also, if you look at my count by month, I've had about 800 of my edits this month. To answer your question, no thanks, I would not like to be nominated right now. I would rather be nominated by somebody else, as opposed to this, which is, for all intents and purposes, a self nomination. I am simply taking a look at the rough consensus on whether or not I would be suitable for adminship. By the way, do you have previous Wikipedian experience, as you seemed to learn the ropes almost instantly. Anyway, thanks for offering and for your input, Werdna648T/C\@ 11:58, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, it might not be a good idea - see Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard#Protection_of_Turkish_related_pages. --Khoikhoi 22:14, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Because of this, perhaps we should revert her edits before the pages get protected. --Khoikhoi 22:20, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ah yes, she's a delight ain't she? As for the Ottoman Empire, I wrote a little bit on the Discussion section, but I think these nationalists just think that more territory=more respect and "greatness" for the Turks or something and that putting anything less (or say more accurate is somehow a slight). I'll help out with the Ottoman Empire page though, no problem. Tombseye 21:55, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Latinus, I noticed you reverted Turkic peoples. Would you also be able to do the same for Ottoman military band? Some anon is adding copyrighted material and he/she has not stated if they have permission to use it. --Khoikhoi 23:11, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ranks

[edit]

Hi there! The problem with Nixer is that he's been working on that article in some other place and then he decided to overwrite the version we've been working on with his version, based on the version of the article from the times before the page block. However, I couldn't convince him so far not to continue his blind reverts and simply add his changes to the current version. Perhaps you could try as well, I don't know if that helps though. Halibutt 00:04, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

All right, keep up the good job. In fact I believe that the Nixer's corrections were ok and should be included (and that's exactly what I told him, BTW), it was only the way he did it that bothered me. Now that you're combining both versions into one, I believe all should be ok. Just let me know as soon as you're finished with it, perhaps I could also add some other states to the list. I'm thinking of Finland, Hungary and, more importantly, Italy. Halibutt 00:11, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Latinus. While blocks on IPs are generally limited to temporary periods, sock puppets of banned users are typically blocked indefinitely. In this case, User:203.122.221.73 was a sock puppet of banned User:Internodeuser (as stated in my block summary). Remember, blocks are reversible, so if any problems ever arise they can be swiftly dealt with. Happy editing, --cj | talk 15:59, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Stop reverts and blocks all again and again

[edit]

For Husnock! Stop reverts and blocks all, everything and everyone again and again. Stop to ignore other users. Everyone who in what does not agree with you, you consider as the same user. You have 100 proofs about it? Similar IP adress is not the proof. See for "Comparative ranks" in User talk:Roitr and for "My revision" (And in 100 times I repeat that not Roitr, but in some clauses I am agree with him, though not in all and with you was not agree-with some not checked up by you data.) in User talk:Tt1 - It is the free encyclopedia and in my opinion you exceed authority of the administrator! I REVERT YOU again to very good compromise variant of these page by Tt1. After many disputes and wars it is a good variant! For Latinus! That that Tt1 and Roitr from Israel is does not say nothing and is not the proof that them same user. I from Israel too. May be you can wish revert and to block all from Israel? -Alexr23 19:14, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sigh, if you aren't a sockpuppet, then I don't know what you are. You created that account the day before yesterday and you know your way around so quickly - you even know how to sign your name! Genuine n00bs usually have no idea how to and have to have it carefully explained. You are getting reverted for adding bogus ranks (what the heck is a "Kommodore") and messing with the Italian ranks, you are getting blocked for trolling and violating the 3RR. What more do you want? --Latinus (talk (el:)) 19:26, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I do not think that nomination for administrator is a good idea. First, it would be a much more job for me, and I do not have time for such additional job. People would ask me to help them about many things in which I am not interested, so I will not have time to do what I want to do. I am already administrator on Serbian Wikipedia, and I even do not have time to do my administrator job there. Second thing is that I have little bad temperament and I was not always friendly in discussions with people, and this is not the best feature of one administrator. So, I do not think that I could do my administrator job at this moment. Maybe in the future. PANONIAN (talk) 22:02, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re trolls

Who is this Nixer/Roitr/Tt1/Alexr23/(multiple IPs) and what does he/she(/it) want? He's been trolling Military rank tables for weeks now and I'm sick of it. Do you think it's time for an RfC? Latinus 22:10, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Exactly! I think these several discussions summed it up pretty well. OK, I'm not insisting on my alien involvement theory LOL, but believe me, these teenagers can be really annoying just because of their pubertation troubles (sorry for apparent lack of political correctness here, but all of this has really p...ed me off). I have seen Nixer's IP (it's from Moscow) and I think we've all seen Tt1/Roitr's IP (from Israel). Also, on the Russian Wikipedia, Nixer aka ru:user:Nxx says he lives in Moscow, thereby confirming the IP evidence. --Latinus (talk (el:)) 18:59, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

-Inanna-

Yeah, I guess I messed up on the high school part, but you still are from North Cyprus. Also, Latinus, see Talk:Pontian Greeks for a great example of Inanna's attitude towards NPOV. Basically, she thinks everything should reflect the Turkish POV, and keeps acting like "she's right, all the rest of you are wrong". --Khoikhoi 01:45, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Slovenian / Serbian / Croatian

[edit]

Hi. Serbian and Croatian are mutually intelligable - differences in grammar are negligable, and core vocabulary is virtually identical. But, their literary standards have many small differences that mean that written standard Serbian is mostly not written standard Croatian. OTOH, Slovenian is quite different. If one compares the difference between Serbian and Croatian to that between US and UK English, than Slovenian is Dutch - related and similar in many ways, but different enough to make instant inteligibality impossible. Regarding the Ottoman map

[edit]

Hello Latinus. I seem to be embroiled in the revert situation with the Ottoman Empire, but found that both maps are a bit off. The Ottomans did take more of North Africa and also controlled most of Egypt and a continguous area extending into extreme northeastern Sudan. Also, they ruled the entire western Arabian coast of the Hijaz. The exaggerated map however goes way beyond and makes absurd claims to areas ruled in all of Sudan and Ethiopia as well as Circassia and Astrakhan, which is just plain wrong. Just thought I'd give you a heads up. This map[1] reflects what I was reading as well in an encyclopedia. Let me know what you think. Ciao. Tombseye 21:52, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Balkan issues and patience

[edit]

Thank you for the compliment. I do, however, lose patience sometimes. I don't think poorly of people from the Balkans at all, and dislike the negative connotation the name has gotten. It seems that some of the most troublesome users, in fact, are not actually editing from Europe but are instead North Americans who are very invested in finding a heritage for themselves. I should also mention that ChrisO (talk · contribs) has been dealing with this issue longer than I have, knows more about the region, and is also a good resource. "2. Crimean Tatar population in Turkey at present

No reliable figures are available. The Emel activists provide a number of 6 million, and Sel says "at least 4 to 5 million" (Sel 1996: 12). These figures are not more than estimates. Tatars calculate it by taking one million immigrants as a starting point and multiplying this number by the birth rate in the span of the last hundred years. Careful analysts deem this to be overestimated [7]. "

Polish attitude

[edit]

Hi there, I must've missed your question before. Sorry for that. What a difficult question it is... It's more or less like asking what do the Greek people think of, say, Asia. I can't generalize that much and note that what I write below is solely my own point of view. It would be much easier if you asked me some less general question. And my POV might be crooked a tad since I'm relatively young (24), I live in a big town (Warsaw) and I'm a student.

Having said that, I don't think that the Polish attitude towards the USA has changed much in last 50 years. Of course, there is a certain mistrust in the US, as well as certain level of.. err.. dissatisfaction? with George W. Bush and his ways, but still America is considered a natural ally of Poland and a state that is generally friendly towards Poland. Poland is a tad different from the rest of Europe in that people here generally like America and support it (even over the Afghanistani and Iraqui cases). At least that's what polls say.

The same applies to Western Europe, though here we could generalize even less. When it comes to Germany, there is still certain animosity towards Germans (especially among the elderly people), mostly because of what the Germans did during WWII, but it's probably the only "Western" country average people care for in Poland. The rest of Western Europe is, as far as I can tell, composed of a mixture of beliefs, stereotypes and experiences, typical to all European states. You know, if you asked an average Pole of France, the only thing he would say would be "Paris, Eiffel tower, wine and Jacques Chirac". UK consists of London and the queen, Spain consists of ETA, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid (perhaps corrida as well), Greece is Acropolis and women with large noses and so on. I doubt an average Pole differs here from an average Brit, Greek or Romanian, for that matter. Halibutt 01:05, 5 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My talk page

[edit]

Hi there, sorry, but I reverted my talk page because it is mine and no user has a right to get any comments continuously posted there. Unlike Swatjester who had complained I had answered his questions. Afterwards I remove. His complaints are completely without a basis, I just saw someone complaining about an Iraq war page being dominated by three guys of the US military and as I saw the point I asked the others who had edited on the page if they might take a look. Now they take offense even though I explained to them what I did. They also make false claims about me pretending they were biased although I never said so. I saw they harrassed the anon as well, filing a complaint for 3rr although pookster11 had violated the same rule, deleted an npov tag and the discussion about it. Swatjester did not even answer when I asked why he complained about the anon but not about his mate. Get-back-world-respect 13:17, 5 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

See Category:Wikipedia:Suspected sockpuppets of -Inanna- for a list of Inanna's sockpuppets. (Altau is currently not on the list because Inanna keeps removing the notice from Altau's user page.) --Khoikhoi 00:49, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I'll take your word for that, I will also go ahead and apologize to Inanna, "kokoi" ;) (she calls you that doesn't she?). -- Michalis Famelis 00:53, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, she actually calls me "hogiehogie". I have no idea why. I'm kind of sick of her personal attacks and accusations that I do the same things that she does. Latinus, Inanna also lives in Istanbul, according to her user page and the IPs she uses. --Khoikhoi 00:56, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, les femmes! On ne peut pas vivre sans eux, n'est pas? -- Michalis Famelis 00:58, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Latinus, to be honest, I don't really know much about any of those words. ;) All I know is that Inanna logs out on purpose whenever she gets blocked so she can edit pages. --Khoikhoi 01:00, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, the problem is that she has no respect for NPOV. See Talk:Pontian Greeks for an example. She thinks her side is right and that's the end of the story. I've tried to explain things to her but she just won't listen. It's pretty sad really, the fact that she isn't open to new ideas, just her own. --Khoikhoi 01:06, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Errrr, it's not Latinus, it's Michalis Famelis. And the french part means something like Ah, women! We can't live without them, can we?. Have you considered Dispute Resolution?? --Michalis Famelis 01:09, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No, I was replying to his comment on my talk page but it looked like I was replying to you. Dispute Resolution would never work because of what I said above. --Khoikhoi 01:14, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Funny about the french, isn't it? As for DR, you should try it. From what I can tell, if lower stages of DR don't work, it could well reach Arbitration, especially if what you say about contempt for NPOV is true. -- 01:18, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, but I'm really too lazy for that kind of stuff. Maybe Inanna will just give up one day. --Khoikhoi 01:22, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Help again

[edit]

Some anon keeps on adding "Armenian traitors" to the Battle of Sarikamish article. Like Inanna, this person's IP changes a lot too. Please semi-protect the page. Thanks. --Khoikhoi 01:15, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're not an admin?? Then how do you do rollback? Inanna is the only troll that I know right now. There were others that don't really edit anymore. --Khoikhoi 01:22, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It does so far, and it looks like TexasAndroid's is as well, you'll have to join the nomination committee! j/k xaosflux Talk/CVU 17:30, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Adminship for TexasAndroid

[edit]

I decided quite a long time ago that I would never make my own push for adminship. While I have no problem with others tooting their own horn, self-nomination or anything like that was not for me. I'm also in no hurry. Admin tools would be nice, but I am more than able to contribute well without them, so I've seen no reason to rush. Put those together, and I told myself a long time ago that, when the time was right, when someone else, with no proding from me, decided it was time to nominate me, then that would be the time. I also am somewhat nervous of putting myself up for scrutiny. Not that I have anything to hide or such, but the nomination process can be a little rough, from what I've seen. So I definitely welcome a nomination, but am nervous of going through the whole thing. But if I am ever to be an admin, I have to go through that gauntlet sometime. So it might as well be now. So feel free to nominate me. - TexasAndroid 21:14, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. I have finished answering the initial questions. - TexasAndroid 00:40, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ιστορία Istoria?

[edit]

NikoSilver 14:38, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Latinus, and thank you for your support in my request for adminship! It passed with a final count of 63/4/3. I am honoured by the community support and pledge to serve the project as best as I can. CanadianCaesar The Republic Restored 16:56, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for taking the time to vote in my RfA, which passed with a final vote of 54/2/1 despite my obvious inadequacy for the job. I'll do my level best to use the mop and bucket — or, as I said in my RfA, plunger — responsibly. Of course, in the best tradition of politicans everywhere, I've already broken a campaign promise (I blocked a vandal last night despite having said "I don't anticipate using the blocking tool very often"). Nevertheless, I'll try not to let the unbridled power corrupt me. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 14:56, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: adminship

[edit]

Yes, I would be honored to accept if you think I'm ready. I self-nommed in the beginning of December and withdrew quickly, but I think it's probably been enough time since then. (ESkog)(Talk) 21:22, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed, hun! You may have noticed that I just started a Wikiproject, and your stub was within its scope. This is wonderful news! Wanna join? ;) Phædriel tell me - 01:04, 17 February 2006 (UTC) PS. The Red Latinus

[edit]

Latinus, according to my browser, your User Page has been deleted. What happened? Alexander 007 17:46, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How did you do it? I thought only admins can speedily delete their own page. Are you an admin (missed that)? Alexander 007 17:52, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yodo

Yeah, and I can't say I disapprove of it :-) Though it is rather an abuse of the process... Alexander 007 18:46, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My RfA

[edit]
Thank you!
Thank you!
Hi Edwy/Archive1. On behalf of my right eye, I'd like to thank you for giving me your support on my recent RfA. It ended with a final tally of (73/2/2) and therefore I have been installed as an administrator now, and I'm ready to serve Wikipedians all over the world with my newly acquired mop and bucket. If you have any questions, do not hestitate to forward them to my talkpage. Once again, thanks for your support. SoothingR 20:40, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
