Continuation of advice from Wildhartlivie

There's not a preferred way, but there are recommended ways to format references. I'll leave a template for you at the end of this. The main recommendation is that an editor use the style already established in the article, but there are too many that used mixed styles. For the example you left:

  • "Sonny & Cher Boost Ratings" article in The New Mexican, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, Nov. 29, 1987, p. 35, accessed through NewspaperARCHIVE.com on March 13, 2009

This is how I format it:

  • "Sonny & Cher Boost Ratings." The New Mexican. Santa Fe, New Mexico. November 29, 1987. p.35. at NewspaperARCHIVE.com.. Accessed March 13, 2009.

That's based on a reference (showing all the wiki-markup) like:

  • [http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/5939214/the_immortals_the_first_fifty "The Immortals: The First Fifty."] ''Rolling Stone''. March 8, 2001. Accessed May 12, 2008.

There is also cite web template referencing, but it is a bit more complex. Basically, just include the facts, the extra words like "article in" aren't necessary.

Format for a reference list

Which is the preferable format for Reference lists?

Regarding your question on references, I think most editors are now using {{reflist}}. There's nothing wrong with the old html markup style, but you'll find that most newer articles use the template style. All of these templates will produce a page to check where it is used, and that is certainly helpful (just like the findagrave has been). If you have any questions, let me know. Also, if you like, I can tell you how to set your user preferences so that you have a tool for leaving warnings on editor talk pages regarding vandalism, etc. And now, here's the ref template:

Referencing may look daunting, but it's easy enough to do. Here's a guide to getting started. References are important to validate your writing and inform the reader. Any editor can remove unreferenced material, and unsubstantiated articles may end up getting deleted, so when you add something to an article, it's advisable to also include a reference to say from where it came. You're quite welcome. I love Wikipedia and I want to protect its sterling reputation, especially for young people. Did I handle that the way you prefer? If they just vandalize once, should I just revert it and report it, and not pay attention to any further vandalisms by the same contributor to the same site? And let you take if from there? The best thing to do would be to dealt with it yourself. Remember to always assume good faith, so give them a gentle warning at first; this often works. Lots of people join up and the first thing they do is put 'George bush is a poo" or something, but - sometimes - they realise they've had their fun, and actually start contributing.
If they're really causing problems, then yes, byy all means shout for help. But you'd probably be suprised how much action you can take yourself - and it's a very valid way of improving wikipedia.
Please see WP:VANDAL#How to respond to vandalism and the following sections, especially the section on templates that you can place on the user page.

Find a Grave Template Format Thank You from Wildhartlivie

Meanwhile, I would just love to thank you for this!! At present, the old {{Find A Grave}} template needs to be changed over so that we can get rid of it. The {{findagrave}} template is used on the majority of biographies, while the old one is currently down to being used on only slightly less that 1400 articles. I've been working on this project lately and I have to admit, when I saw someone had reformatted the Find a Grave link, I inwardly groaned then smiled when I checked. Vandalism notices

Somebody is repeatedly vandalizing Danny Bonaduce. I have reverted it each time. I believe it is the same person, variously using Bradp521, Ucho123 and/or 71.56.247.221.

User:Bradp521 wasn't vandalising it, they were actually removing vandalism.
The other two accounts have been warned;
If you come across more of the same, please put {{adminhelp}} on your page, and a description with links to edits, and an admin can take action towards banning any vandals.

The reason for the confusion was probably this edit. I suspect Bradp521 was using an 'auto-fix' tool, and the vandalism did actually have a <ref> tag without a closing </ref> - the user probably fixed that without reading/realising it was vandalised.

For your future reference, in similar cases;

  • Revert the vandalism, and then put a template warning on the users talk page. See WP:VANDAL#WARNINGS.
  • If they persist, go to WP:AIV and add their details. If you've already warned them, they'll be dealt with very quickly.

Making sure the main dates, birth dates, etc. are no longer linked

Your fixing those links as you go along is great, the simpler the template, the better. Another thing you might check on when you're doing that is whether the main dates, birth dates, etc. are no longer linked. Sure. It's as simple as this link shows. LInking of dates has been deprecated because clicking on that date only gives you a HUGE list of unrelated things connected to that date. Most all dates can be delinked now, perhaps with the exception of the 4th of July or some significant date that has context and meaning to the article in which it appears. Does that help? IMDB template conversion

JGKlein, I noticed you going around converting IMDb templates from an older version to a newer, more concise one. While this is appreciated, you need to refrain from using the concise template on people with suffixes on their article names, such as John Phillips (musician). The new template just uses the page name for the link title, so using the it makes their name show up like this:

John Phillips (musician) at IMDb

instead of like this:

John Phillips at IMDb

Per this injunction, all editors are asked not to engage in systematic efforts to link or delink dates, pending the resolution of the associated ArbCom case. Song

Thanks for the message, but I have no time for musical theatre stuff. Any time I spend on musicals now is strictly to save existing articles from disaster. I'm in the middle of working on an FA candidate and just finished an exhausting month with Noel Coward. I'm going to get fired from my job. Seriously!! The song has an interesting history, and I'm sure you could write an article on it if you wish. You can find quite a bit about it on Google. But, of course, there are a lot of famous songs from musicals that could have their own articles, and this song is only really known at all because Frank Sinatra sang it. You can listen to several people singing it on YouTube. I think Liza Minelli puts it over pretty well, although she sings it rather differently from the way it is sung in Cinderella. I have just found out what the second MGM musical was from which the song was cut. It was "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" (1949) with Frank Sinatra and Betty Garrett. Hi. FA means WP:Featured Article. It's a grueling process! Read our article on Noel Coward to see what an FA article looks like. We also upgraded dozens of other Noel-Coward related articles. A lot of work! Sorry, I didn't mean to say that I am actually scheduled to get fired, I meant to say that I am spending so much time on Wikipedia that I'm neglecting my job and could put it in serious jeopardy. So I'm really sorry, but I've just got to say "no" to this. But after you've gone as far as you can go with the article, if you want me to take a quick look at it editorially, I could do that. There are lots of famous songs from musicals that one could write an article about if one really wanted to, but I usually focus on shows rather than songs. I had not seen any of the films nominated. Times are tough! I am on unemployment, so I have to wait until films come out on DVD or cable TV. I am productively filling my downtime by contributing to Wikipedia, and it's keeping me entertained. About the latest Academy Awards, I had some predictions that were accurate. I knew that Heath Ledger was going to win for Best Supporting Actor, Sean Penn for Best Actor, and Slumdog Millionaire for Best Picture. External links in film articles

Hello, I noticed that you added reviews to some film articles' "External links" sections. I would caution against doing this too much because we try to avoid treating Wikipedia as a link farm. Individual reviews in "External links" sections can get indiscriminate, which is why it is preferable to link off-wiki to Rotten Tomatoes or Metacritic, where readers can access multiple reviews without us needing to cherry-pick. If a review is essential enough to mention in the "External links" section, it should be incorporated into the article body. :) —Erik (talkcontrib) 17:49, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

You can request protection of a page at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection. Pages are only generally protected when there is a lot of vandalism every day. Since there's only been one such edit today, it looks like it might be dying down. As an open encyclopedia, we are hesitant to prevent anyone to edit unless it's difficult to control; at the moment it looks under control. See also: Wikipedia:Protection policy. Patrick Swayze - reference for his father dying of alcoholism

I'm not sure Netglimpse is a reliable source either, since it has a prominently-displayed "Edit" button at the top of the page and doesn't cite its own sources. It would seem no more reliable than IMDB] with respect to personal details. Is this really the best sourcing we can find for a Biography? Rodhullandemu 19:29, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Farrah Fawcett edits

You've made a number of changes to the citations in Farrah Fawcett, but I do not think they are improving the references. Rather, they are providing generic links to external web sites. For things like People (magazine), it is customary to wikilink to the page, but to link directly to www.people.com does not add to the article. I'd like to go back to the way the article was before these changes, and the way most articles (especially high-profile ones) are. Can you explain your changes in more detail? Well, thanks for taking my comments on board. I am glad for good communication, and cooperation is always appreciated, but not at the expense of good faith. I would have been happy to discuss if you had any questions, but as I have seen, sometimes a quick word opens and closes the discussion. I had a real "oops" moment recently when I moved a page to a "correct" name and made some edits to the page that I found out after researching wasn't quite correct...The editor whose work I was stepping on was very gracious about it though. I love Wikipedia so much, and making contributions has given me so much enjoyment because I have been unemployed since October 2008. It is giving me something productive to do, and also, I have learned a lot about HTML. It's like taking a class. As a novice to Wikipedia, I don't feel I am in a position to argue about something that is not that significant.
We all make mistakes. That's why pencils have erasers on them. It's how you handle and fix mistakes after they are made — and what you learn from them — that matters.
You seem like a reasonable, decent & friendly person. I may ask you for some guidance in the future.

In the Elizabeth Taylor article, footnote fields are running together. Am I doing something wrong?

In revising Elizabeth Taylor's article, I am using a template for a footnote from a reference book, but for some reason the fields of the footnote are running together. Take a look at Footnote # 1 in this section, which starts with "Parish ...". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Taylor#Superstardom_.281955-1970.29

Notice that "The Hollywood Beauties" is run together with "New Rochelle", etc.

Am I doing something wrong with the template?

I changed it from 'cite book' to the all-purpose {{citation}} template, I removed the empty parameters, and I also spread things out so that I could read it - and that fixed it. Specifically, I put this;

|title=The Hollywood Beauties

That might seem a bit wordy, but it certainly helps to see what is happening in these cases. Some people object to splitting the citation in this way, and indeed, now it is 'sorted out', it makes no difference to condense it, ie, <ref name=Parish>{{citation|last1=Parish|first1=James Robert|last2=Mank|first2=Gregory W.|... etc. I have changed it to that.

That was my fault, actually, and I fixed it before I'd read this. What happened...I edited just the section, not the whole thing. When you do that, and use preview, you don't see refs - so, it is sometimes handy to put a temporary {{reflist}} at the end of the section, so they will show up in preview. I forgot that I had done so, and saved; I removed it soon after.
I hope that it's all OK now. If not, or any further questions, please reply here.
As a tip, when linking to a wiki page (as you did above), rather than put the full URL as an external link, it is better to use short-form, ie instead of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Taylor#Superstardom_.281955-1970.29 (which shows as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Taylor#Superstardom_.281955-1970.29), just put [[Elizabeth_Taylor#Superstardom (1955-1970)]], which displays as Elizabeth_Taylor#Superstardom (1955-1970). Auto archiving

Hi,

I've set up this page for auto-archiving, as discussed.

Normally, I prefer to explain how to do stuff, but in the case of archive set-up, it's easier to just do it for you. The voodoo to make it work is here; the bot should come along within about a day and kick things off. Note the archive box at the top which, currently, will say "no archives yet (create)" - don't create anything, just let the bot do its thing.

It's set to 180 days (180d), you might want to change that. Note that a) it won't archive very small threads or things with no sigs in (ie no date) - you can cut those yourself and paste 'em into the archive page if you want.

I am reading Barbara Walters' autobiography Audition: A Memoir, and I greatly admire her for being one of the first women to break into the previously all-male field of TV news reporting. I think Barbara Walters is great, and she deserves better.

Such requests are made in WP:RPP, but please read carefully the guide there; because Wikipedia is "the encyclopaedia that anyone can edit", it is a last resort, and only used in cases of persistent vandalism from many different addresses. Playgirl - on-line only? or also in print?

i saw your correction to Levi Johnston. the wikipedia article on Playgirl states (at end of the lede) "In August 2008, the magazine announced that it would cease publication of its print edition as of the January 2009 issue. Need help getting a caption to show on a picture

I am trying to get a photo caption to show up in the Marble House article in the new photo I added, and it will not. I want it to say "Rear view, facing sea (1968)". Can someone please fix this, and I will observe what you did? This is my first day adding photos to Wikipedia, and I need some help.

How do I rename a photo in Wikimedia Commons so my family name is not associated with it?

Hello,

I just uploaded to Wikimedia Commons a photo of the Aloha Tower in Honolulu. I want this picture to be public domain and to be used freely in Wikipedia. However, after I uploaded it, I realized the title of the file has the name of someone in my family associated with it, and I want to rename it simply "Aloha Tower, Honolulu, Hawaii".

How do I either rename the photo, or remove it so I can make another copy of the photo and upload that generic version?

When I tried to rename it, all I succeeded in doing was making a second copy of the picture.

Go to the file page at Commons you linked above, click edit, add this template with the parameters filled out: {{rename|New name.jpg|Reason for renaming.}}, click save, wait a few hours (possibly even longer) and a Commons administrator will move the image to a new name or reject your request (though I can't see any reason for rejection here). Fort Adams article - I am trying to reduce width of Info box at top right so text will re-arrange

In Fort Adams, I am trying to get the text of this article to rise to the top to improve the overall appearance of the article. I tried reducing the pixel width of the photo in the Info Box, hoping that might narrow the width of Info Box and the text might flow to the top of the article, but that didn't work. Could someone please fix it, and I will look at what you did to learn for next time?

Addendum - It appears the way I described when viewed through AOL's browser, but I just looked at it through Mozilla Firefox, and it looks fine. Any way to fix it so AOL's browser will display it properly?

The fundamental problem there is, there are too many images and no section separation - this causes 'bunching'. It can kinda be resolved (Wikipedia:BUNCH), but that method is always a but 'hack-ish' - preferable would be to simply move the images into a gallery section, or move them off to a category on 'Commons' and use {{commons}}.
So, I encourage you to boldly try to fix it; if you'd like me to have a go at it for you, please give me a shout on my talk page and I'll address it when I get the chance. Best,  Chzz  ►  19:19, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
Well, I think I will just leave it alone. It's not a matter of dire importance. I will revert the photo back to 300 pixels. As long as it can be seen OK through other browsers besides AOL's, then that's good enough for me.

Sorry, Template:Infobox automobile does not have any parameter for an image caption. You could maybe change it, or request that in Wikipedia:Requested templates. I removed the caption, for the time being. Also, the 'thumb' is not needed for the infobox.

You can do this by changing <gallery> to <gallery widths="280px" heights="220px">. You can adjust the height and width values if the images appear to be overly large (I didn't exactly test them for the "best looks", but rather to see if they worked). In general galleries should be evaded trough, as it is preferable to embed images along the text, rather then placing them in a separate section.
In this case there is a good reason for using a gallery though, mainly due to the lack of space caused by the already present images, so i am just pointing out a general fact :). With kind regards, Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 21:41, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

It is possible to specify the sizes, as shown below (using a small size, for the example) - however, I would not recommend it; I suggest just leaving it at the default.
Whenever we begin to 'force' the image size, that overrides the preference that users can set for themselves in their 'preferences' - which can make pages unreadable on e.g. mobile devices, etc.

You're welcome! I will look through my father's other old archived photos to see if I have any of Kalapana, also. I had not realized that Kaimū was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 1990 until I received your message. I didn't read the article closely ... I just noticed that a photo from my father's vast collection fit it, so I published it. I have some more photos of Black Sand Beach, and I will publish them when I find them.

Re: Woolley -- you may have something there - I can't find any evidence in the references I have immediately at hand that he was ever on television! I'll do some more digging, and if it holds up, it's definitely an error worth mentioning in the article, so thanks for the suggestion. (Actually, Woolley was really best known for his Broadway acting, but they didn't add the live performance category until 1984.)

Re: photos -- Do you have a good shot of the "Four Ladies" gazebo, one that clearly demonstrates the Marilyn Monroe weathervane on top? I realize the only way to really show off the Marilyn sculpture would be from a position about 20 feet above pavement level, and it's hard to find a ladder out on La Brea Avenue, but if you have a good one, it would be great to replace the pathetic one now in the article.

Also, do you happen to have a shot of the Parkyakarkus star? It's such an absurd name, and I'd love to be able to add a photo of that star to the article, but couldn't find one in the public domain. Thanks for your note!DoctorJoeE (talk) 16:13, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

I have notice that you used a lot of references about Jack Cassidy from less credible sources. David Cassidy's book is full of half truths and lies and so is the Marty and Shirley book. Jack was not bisexual. That was a rumor during his time working with Cole Porter and Cole was in a wheelchair so I doubt if much went one. Shirley Jones states in articles that her and Jack wanted to reconcile before Jack died. I wish you would just quote more credible sources for Jack. Photo of mill outside Newport

Talk:Rhode Island#Mislabeled pic is disputing the identity of the location/building of your File:Abandoned Mill outside Newport, RI, 1968.jpg image. I agree that the description of this photo may be inaccurate, and I will be happy to comply with correcting its description for Wikipedia. My father has THOUSANDS of photos, and this was labeled "Abandoned Mill" in GOOD FAITH because that's what it looked like to us. If someone can tell me exactly what this old building is, I will gladly correct the description. I read that it is possibly a stable? Can someone please give me a reliable source of what it is? Thank you so much for helping out on the genital pain article. I discovered a while ago that clinicians check out these kinds of articles when they are having difficulty finding the cause of some symptoms. I read that in some media report about proj medicine. So adding another cause may just help someone out now or in the future. Rare causes are always welcome.

You are welcome. I am a 58-year-old male with Sjogren's syndrome, and it took over 35 years to diagnose it. I belong to a SS support group. I know that this particular symptom is very embarrassing for women to discuss, so I want to help those who may have it but feel extremely uncomfortable discussing it with doctors (particularly males). I had a devil of a time getting a diagnosis for myself. I have debilitating pain, fatigue, cognitive problems, gastrointestinal problems, dry eyes, dry throat, etc. I have an absolutely brilliant neurologist who diagnosed it in 2016. For some reason, I don't have the Sjogren's Syndrome antibodies, but evidence of chronic inflammation showed up in a lip biopsy of my salivary glands, which most neurologists would not think of ordering. Hi. I noticed that you added a photo to the article Rickie Sorensen. Sorensen was born in 1946 and would have been 15 years old in 1961 (when this cast photo was taken). Hello again. How do I contact a Wikimedia Commons administrator to rename the images for "Father of the Bride" (TV series) and "Ichabad and Me" (TV series) so they are appropriate to the subject? They were reversed. I have corrected the text, but the image files should also be renamed. This photo should be renamed to "Ichabod and Me 1961". Proposal to change names of pages for two actors with very similar names

How do I request that the following two Wikipedia articles of very similar names and professions be renamed to avoid confusion? There is a German actor named Paul Hartmann (actor) and an American actor named Paul Hartman. This will cause never-ending confusion unless Paul Hartmann (actor) is renamed "Paul Hartmann (German actor) and Paul Hartman changed to "Paul Hartman (American actor)". Thanks! Since the names differ and both articles have hatnotes pointing to each other, I don't think further disambiguation is necessary. The Paul Hartmann article is disambiguated not to tell him apart from Paul Hartman but from Paul Ernst Wilhelm Hartmann; see Paul Hartmann. Technically WP:RM explains how to request a move. I need help with making a sub-category in Wikimedia Commons. I have put a note on my Wikimedia Commons page, but no one has responded yet. Basically, I can't figure out how to make a sub-category for the title of a movie under a director's name. Could someone please get back to me? You create a category by creating a page in Category: space with the name that you desire. One way to do this is to search for the category (on the right wikimedia project) by name. When it fails to find the category you just named, it should offer you a chance to "Create the page". You make it a sub-category by including a [[Category:...]] link specifying the parent category on the new sub-category page. A category page can be a subcategory of more than one parent. Please note that I've removed the Petticoat Junction image that you added, obviously in good faith, to Gunilla Hutton. Images of living persons cannot be claimed under fair use policy as they nearly always fail non-free content criteria number 1, specifically "No free equivalent. Non-free content is used only where no free equivalent is available, or could be created, that would serve the same encyclopedic purpose." As long as it is possible that there could be a free image of the subject available for use, or there could be one available in the future, then fair use cannot be claimed for the copyrighted image in this article. How do I propose that two VERY SIMILARLY TITLED categories be combined/merged? There is a "Category:Music television specials" and "Category:Musical television specials". I noticed this when I added a category to Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall. Thanks! JGKlein 22:43, 13 December 2017 (UTC)

Another possibility would be to rename and redefine the two categories. "Category:Musical television specials" could become "Category:Book musical television specials". For example, a concert or musical variety special like Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall and My Name Is Barbra (TV special) would be a "Category:Musical TV special" and Peter Pan (musical), Cinderella (musical), and Once Upon a Mattress would be a "Category:Book musical TV special". A concert/variety special vs. a story.

Helping complete a filmography page

Hi, Entertainment Buff,

I come to you asking for you're aid in helping to finish the formation of a current page, Earl Holliman filmography. I made it myself in honor of the actor, who is also my personal friend, and I am trying to complete it using the table format for his self appearances and awards/nominations but despite what I try I can't seem to hit the nail on the head (plus, being at personal warfare with a nasty cold doesn't help my either). You seem to be keen on this type of style appearance and if you can by any chance help me to update the last 2 sections of his filmography page and have it all said and done, I would be so grateful and appreciative! Plus, someday in the hopefully near future I'd like to show this off to Earl and make his day down the road.
