Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has wrapped up most of their work on the 2017 wikitext editor and the visual diff tool. The team has begun investigating the needs of editors who use mobile devices. Their work board is available in Phabricator. Their current priorities are fixing bugs and improving mobile editing.
Recent changes
- The Editing team has published an initial report about mobile editing.
- The Editing team has begun a design study of visual editing on the mobile website. New editors have trouble doing basic tasks on a smartphone, such as adding links to Wikipedia articles. You can read the report.
- The Reading team is working on a separate mobile-based contributions project.
- The 2006 wikitext editor is no longer supported. If you used that toolbar, then you will no longer see any toolbar. You may choose another editing tool in your editing preferences, local gadgets, or beta features.
- The Editing team described the history and status of VisualEditor in this recorded public presentation (starting at 29 minutes, 30 seconds).
- The Language team released a new version of Content Translation (CX2) last month, on International Translation Day. It integrates the visual editor to support templates, tables, and images. It also produces better wikitext when the translated article is published. [1]

Please restore the undiscussed move you made....
...of 8th Street / St. Mark's Place to 8th Street/St. Mark's Place. The space on either side of the virgule helps to show that it is not an actual combined name, but two names on the same article. If you want to open an RM on it on the talk page, fine, but please move it back first, per the reaming I recently got at AN for not doing exactly that. Two Growth team projects to be deployed in next two weeks
We will be deploying the "Understanding first day" and "Personalized first day" projects on Czech and Korean Wikipedias in the coming weeks. See the new project pages below for full details on the projects, and our project updates page for their progress.
- Understanding first day: learn about the actions new editors take right after creating their accounts. We will be careful with user privacy, and we hope to share initial results in December.
- Personalized first day: learn about new editors' objectives by adding some optional questions to the new editor’s registration process, and personalizing their onboarding. We hope to share initial results in December.
Third Growth team project begins
- Focus on help desk: direct newcomers to the local help desks where they can ask questions to help them make their first edits. We hope to have an initial experiment running in December.
Best practices for helping newcomers
We are going to direct newcomers to help desks. But what's the best way to reply to a newcomer there? We have gathered some best practices for successful interactions, based on community experiences and some external documentation. The page has also been reviewed by some experienced community members who suggested some changes. That page is now open for translations. Comments and suggestions are still welcome!

New neighborhood maps
I have to say that these maps look pretty bad -- very amateurish. The border around the neighborhood is too thick, and one cannot see anything in the neighborhood - such as the main streets - because the coloring obscures everything. I urge you to stop replacing neighborhood maps, and undo the ones you've changed. If the maps are yours, then I suggest you try again, because this attempt was really not successful. - @Beyond My Ken: These aren't my maps, these were taken from Wikidata. I don't know where the Wikidata maps are from. Anyway, I agree that the border is too thick, though you can just change the zoom level on the map. Also, the previous versions of the maps are in hidden comments, so you can just un-comment these if you want, and remove the newer maps (e.g. in the Chelsea, Manhattan article). epicgenius (talk) 00:35, 13 November 2018 (UTC)

I see that you reduced the precision to the coordinates to three decimal places, and you added names to them. Can you please explain this? —Eli355 (talk • contribs) 15:11, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Eli355: Sure. Coordinate longitude precision to 3 decimal points is approximately 300 feet. The article decimal degrees explains more, but at this latitude, 3 decimal points is around 200 feet. (4 decimal points is about 30 feet, which may be used for further refinement, while at a precision of 5 decimal points, we can identify individual features like tables and chairs.) The names, well, display the name of the building when you click on the coordinate, rather than the page title "List of tallest buildings in New York City". This is especially useful if the coordinates are all exported at the same time, with a template like {{GeoGroup}}. epicgenius (talk) 21:54, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

Hello, Epicgenius. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

23rd Street reopening in question

- I've reverted the edits. The walls were down, and the screens, glass fare control, and platform edges were all installed. But for some reason there was a "Exit" sign leaning against the wall. From the looks of it, it seems like they might be ready next week or something. There aren't any pictures, unfortunately, or I would've posted it on NYC Transit Forums, even though I don't really post that often. epicgenius (talk) 21:39, 26 November 2018 (UTC)
Penn Station Numbers
The article stated that 630,000 passengers use Penn Station.
And we already know the following: LIRR - 233,340 NJT - 93,305 Amtrak - 28,487 Subway - 200,000 = 555,132
Since 630,000 passengers use Penn station, 630,000-555,132 = gives us about 75,000 passengers who arrive and depart Penn station not using any of the above means. Which means they arrive by the only remaining way which are Buses. Mercenary2k (talk) 14:44, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Mercenary2k: I see, thanks. However, I think ride share and taxis are also included in this total. In any case, I think we should only include the LIRR, NJ Transit, and Amtrak ridership because the subway stations are not actually part of Penn Station, but rather, are connected to it. We can include the subway ridership as a note, but they aren't part of the railroad component of Penn Station (i.e. they don't use the 11 platforms and 21 tracks for commuter/intercity rail, and they each have their own fare collection areas). epicgenius (talk) 14:48, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
