WikiCup 2021 March newsletter

Round 1 of the competition has finished; it was a high-scoring round with 21 contestants scoring more than 100 points. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 55 contestants qualifying. You will need to finish among the top thirty-two contestants in Round 2 if you are to qualify for Round 3. Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

• Epicgenius led the field with a featured article, nine good articles and an assortment of other submissions, specialising on buildings and locations in New York, for a total of 945 points.
• Bloom6132 was close behind with 896 points, largely gained from 71 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
• ImaginesTigers, who has been editing Wikipedia for less than a year, was in third place with 711 points, much helped by bringing League of Legends to featured article status, exemplifying how bonus points can boost a contestant's score.
• Amakuru came next with 708 points, Kigali being another featured article that scored maximum bonus points.
• Ktin, new to the WikiCup, was in fifth place with 523 points, garnered from 15 DYKs and 34 "In the news" items.
• The Rambling Man scored 511 points, many from featured article candidate reviews and from football related DYKs.
• Gog the Mild, last year's runner-up, came next with 498 points, from a featured article and numerous featured article candidate reviews.
• Hog Farm, at 452, scored for a featured article, four good articles and a number of reviews.
• Le Panini, another newcomer to the WikiCup, scored 438 for a featured article and three good articles.
• Lee Vilenski, last year's champion, scored 332 points, from a featured article and various other sport-related topics.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. In Round 1, contestants achieved eight featured articles, three featured lists and one featured picture, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. They completed 97 good article reviews, nearly double the 52 good articles they claimed. Contestants also claimed for 135 featured article and featured list candidate reviews. There is no longer a requirement to mention your WikiCup participation when undertaking these reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article candidate, a featured process, or something else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

Growth team newsletter #17

Welcome to the seventeenth newsletter from the Growth team!

The Growth team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in mid-size Wikimedia projects.

Structured tasks

Add a link: the team is continuing to engineer on our first "structured task", which will break down the workflow of adding wikilinks to articles, and assist newcomers with an algorithm to identify words and phrases that could be made into links.

Add an image: even as we build our first structured task, we have been thinking about the next one. "Add an image" is a structured task in which newcomers would be recommended images from Wikimedia Commons to add to unillustrated articles. This is an ambitious idea with many details to consider. We have already learned a lot from community members, and we encourage everyone to look at the project page and join the discussion.

Moving forward: more wikis to get the features

Last November, our team published the analysis of the impact of newcomer tasks. We announced that we found that the Growth features, and particularly newcomer tasks, lead to increased editing from newcomers. Because of these results, we believe all Wikipedias should implement these features.

We have started to contact more wikis to deploy the features, including Wikipedias of all sizes. Bengali Wikipedia recently began using Growth features, and Danish, Thai, Indonesian, and Romanian Wikipedias will be coming soon. Please contact us if you have questions regarding deployment.

We are looking for translators who can help by translating the interface. Translating is done on Translatewiki.net (it requires a different account that your Wikimedia one). Communities that already have the Growth features being deployed are invited to check on the translations. Access translations here.

Variant testing

As mentioned in our previous newsletter, we ran a test of two variants of the newcomer homepage, meant to find a version that increases users completing suggested edits. We have completed the experiment, and learned that one of the variants leads to more edits on desktop while the other leads to more edits on mobile. Therefore, we will deploy the strongest variants for each platform to all newcomers.

News for mentors

Mentor dashboard: we have interviewed mentors from several communities as we plan a mentor dashboard feature, which would help mentors track the progress of their mentees. We encourage all mentors to share their thoughts on tools that would help them.

Magic word for mentors: it is now possible to use a magic word, {{#mentor}}, to display the name of a given newcomer's mentor. This can be used on welcome messages, userboxes, etc.

Help panel questions going to mentors: in most wikis, newcomers using the help panel ask questions to the help desk. On Czech Wikipedia, we have experimented with sending these questions to mentors instead. This simplifies the newcomer experience, and only led to a increase in mentorship questions of about 30%. We tried this in Arabic, Bengali, French and Vietnamese Wikipedias, and we are making it the default experience.

Thank you today for Riegelmann Boardwalk, "about the wooden boardwalk in Coney Island, Brooklyn, NYC. First proposed in the 1890s, the boardwalk opened in 1923, and has been renovated and expanded several times since then. Its namesake is a borough president who didn't want the boardwalk to be named after him. Continued vigilance on coordinates

I just had to correct the coordinates for 1 Hanover Square. Please remember that whatever database the coordinates come from is corrupt. Abductive (reasoning) 15:38, 16 March 2021 (UTC)

Abductive, I think I know where the corruption is coming from. A lot of these infoboxes were automatically generated using http://www.elkman.net/nrhp/infobox.php, which pulls from an official database with the coordinates. Unfortunately, the official database the data comes from is not very precise. Epicgenius (talk) 16:31, 16 March 2021 (UTC)

Cleaning up fultonhistory urls

Epicgenius, you have used fultonhistory.com quite a bit in the past. I'm wondering if you have a method for stripping the "highlighter" search strings from the newspaper urls? Gatoclass, yes, I do. For stripping the highlighter search strings, I usually take 2 steps. For example, if you have a url like this:

I would remove everything after the first .pdf as well as the string http://fultonhistory.com/highlighter/highlight-for-xml?uri= at the beginning of the URL. Afterward, I would use a URL decoder like URL Encode-Decode to extract the remaining string, which in this case becomes

There's actually an easier way to do it than that. All you need to do is delete everything from the .pdf on and then hit return, which returns the original url with no further steps. This has always worked for me until the last week or so, when one or two papers are suddenly returning 404 errors when I try it. This often indicates the source PDF can't be located at all, which could actually be the case here since I couldn't find any working Morning Courier pages when searching the site through Google. Massive removal of sourced content from articles for NYC neighborhoods

Starting with Dyker Heights, Brooklyn, a user has started removing sourced content from articles about other NYC neighborhoods. See Bedford–Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, Flatbush, Brooklyn, Jamaica, Queens, Kips Bay, Manhattan, et. al. The Dyker Heights issue is a bizarre edit war about whether we should include crime statistics from the NYPD Compstat system. At various times, the user has claimed that we can't use the crime data because it's "irrelevant trivia", needs an independent source and most recently that the NYPD can't be used as a source about crime. Any thoughts on dealing with this editor. Alansohn (talk) 22:02, 17 March 2021 (UTC)

Alansohn, I would consider this scale of editing to be disruptive. None of these removals have been discussed anywhere before the removals were made. I understand that some info might benefit from independent sources, but some of the removals are pretty silly. Hi boys, seems you’re talking about me without a ping. In general thats considered rude but I’m in a good mood today and both of you seem to have your hearts in the right place. In general crime data, health data, etc is not due for inclusion on the neighborhood level. WP:DUEWEIGHT requires there to be independent coverage, especially for obscure and hyper-specific points like the exact number of rapes in 2018. Perhaps if it were current the information could be argued to have some value, but as dated as it is there is no possible encyclopedic purpose served by this information. I do think some of the crime and health stats may be a bit excessive. I think we should discuss which types of stats to cut out, because it's not something that needs to be updated every year. However, I see no value in conducting wide-scale section blankings like this which basically leave the reader with no context whatsoever. Additionally, this is a major city where health/police/etc data are collected for areas which contain 150k-200k people. Therefore, although you might be correct in some cases, the claim that In general crime data, health data, etc is not due for inclusion on the neighborhood level is far too broad for NYC contexts. You think they may be a bit excessive? Thats interesting, because you seem to have put them there [1]. It seems that almost everything you added in that 10,000 byte edit was undue. The same rules apply to NYC articles as to all other articles, WP:DUEWEIGHT must be satisfied. Fultonhistory again

After some messing around, I think I've worked out what's been going wrong.

Taking this link for example:

- which stopped working a couple of weeks ago. Fortunately, I discovered that one can retrieve the original page by taking the end of the above url (the "New York NY Morning Courier 1852 - 1171.pdf" bit) and putting it straight into the fultonhistory.com search box, which brings up the original page with the usual highlighter clutter. If you then strip off the highlighter from that string, you get the following url, which works:

https://fultonhistory.com/Login_18/New%20York%20NY%20Morning%20Courier/New%20York%20NY%20Morning%20Courier%201852/New%20York%20NY%20Morning%20Courier%201852%20-%201171.pdf

If you compare the two urls, you can see that the original was at "Newspaper 18" and it's now at "Login 18". So basically the original url got moved.

Now whether Tom deliberately moved it, or whether it's something he inadvertently did while trying to deal with his recent scraper issues I don't know. Anyhow, there are several papers I know of whose urls have stopped working though most of them still appear to work, so I think I might contact him to let him know about this just to be sure that he hasn't accidentally moved some of these urls. FLUSHING MEADOW CORONA PARK

Hi Epicgenius

Yes, I am aware I did not cite my addition correctly. Wikipedia seems to have changed its approach lately. When you want to edit, usually you get the whole article with the citation marks, and I copy those normally to include what will be a footnoted article. (I am not the greatest expert in Wikipedia citation rules). As you saw, I was unable to do this, although I tried it a number of times.

I respectfully disagree with you about the relevance of my addition. It is a fact that those vigils at Flushing Meadow Corona Park, particularly in the late seventies and eighties, attracted thousands of people, at one time. At the vigil on the 18 June 1983, there were approximately 100,000 people there.

I do not believe in the aims of this particular group, (the Bayside apparitionists), so I did not include this for any propaganda purposes, but my question is did the ordinary precincts of the park (and I am not referring to the tennis stadium for instance) attract crowds like that on a regular basis for any other occasions? Sometimes there would be more than one vigil a month. I live in Australia, and I defer to what may be your better knowledge of this topic.

I would argue it is a significant part of the park's history. Also of relevance here is considering what some people may have argued was an off the wall event (ie a woman who talks to the Virgin Mary and receives messages as well) why were they allowed to congregate there, in such huge numbers, up to the present time? The vigils still happen today, but with much reduced numbers, at the same old Vatican Pavilion site. Didn't the park have a reputation to uphold also? I admit I did not touch on this in my addition.

If you could assist me in including a reference to them that was more in reflection of Wikipedia's standards, I would be grateful. Particularly to include a citation from elsewhere, as I know they are there. I just had trouble placing it in the article, according to Wikipedia's citation rules.

@Andyjourn: Thanks for the comment. Since there's a few reliable secondary sources available that mention the significance of this event (including books and news articles), I've re-added the information to the article. I hadn't known about the issue you had with adding citations - basically, the article uses something called shortened footnotes. The citation requirement is as rigorous as it is, only because this is a good article, which means it has to maintain a certain quality standard. I apologize that I didn't look closely earlier, or I would have realized it was a notable event. Epicgenius (talk) 02:55, 29 March 2021 (UTC)

Could you also please at the end include any variation on the words, "The local Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn always maintained the events lacked any authenticity"? UNISPHERE

Hi Epicgenius

Now to bring up another subject (somewhat related as Bayside visitors would have seen this on their way to the exedra) but different, could you make some additions please to the Unisphere article in Wikipedia, which is also in the Flushing Meadow Corona Park? I don't know how this happened, but some time ago the "in popular culture" section, was removed from the article. That is one thing I really like about Wikipedia articles, when you read up about something, often there will be this section, how it will have been referred to in entertainment.

I used to like the sitcom "King of Queens", and there is the largest globe in the world in the intro, with Doug and his wife on the lawn!

Andyjourn, the issue about the Unisphere article's popular culture section was that it lacked sources. I will try to find sources for some of the more notable appearances, though it may take a while. Epicgenius (talk) 00:52, 30 March 2021 (UTC)

I completely understand. Thank you very much. You are a great editor. One day I would love to see the Unisphere! When I visited NYC (about 20 years ago) I did see the Statue of Liberty.
