Orphaned non-free image File:Small-heath-package.jpg[edit]

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Small-heath-package.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Thank you. DASHBot (talk) 06:13, 3 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, your image you uploaded wouldn't qualify as a non-free game cover. But as you created the image yourself you could consider re-tagging the image as a {{pd-self}}, [[Template:PD-self|link to pd-self template, or similar. Salavat (talk) 06:09, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Just thought I'd throw in some info. Salavat is right, it doesn't qualify as a "game cover", but you own the copyright, not Tiger or whoever. Since the object is 3D, you are free to take 2D photos of it and the photo belongs to you. As such, as long as you give it a free license (creative commons, GPL etc) or make it public domain (like the rest of your photos) then it doesn't need a fair use rationale. Alphathon™ (talk) 15:13, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I originally had it that way, but then someone nominated it for deletion based on the cover art being copyrighted. So I just ignore it? Evan-amos (talk) 15:31, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No, don't just ignore it - contest it. I believe there is a template you can add to put (a) reason(s) why it doesn't qualify. I think the problem here though is that the art itself my qualify as copyrighted, even when photographed, so it may need some kind of hybrid licence which I'm not sure exists. One possibility would be to claim fair use on the art but have the photo itself as public domain. I'm no expert on image copyrights though so you'd have to ask someone more knowledgeable. Alphathon™ (talk) 15:49, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Something similar is the image i uploaded of the Street Fighter IV TE Stick, [1]. While the image may have copyrighted material on it, that material isnt the focus, the TE Stick is. Plus as Alphathon mentioned its a 3D object. In your case it would be the focus is on Tiger Electronics handheld and not solely on the Mega Man artwork. Also similar is the pokemon plane, which has copyrighted artwork on it but because the plane is the focus then it cannot be copyrighted. Salavat (talk) 15:09, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File:Mega-Man-2-Tiger-small.jpg[edit]

Sorry to persist with this but the image still doesnt qualify as a game cover. So could i ask you either could I attach a pd-self template to the image or something similar? Salavat (talk) 05:31, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey i changed the image to a pd-self image. Salavat (talk) 06:06, 8 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A file that you uploaded or altered, File:Cheez-It-Box-Small.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree files because its copyright status is unclear or disputed. If the file's copyright status cannot be verified, it may be deleted. You may find more information on the file description page. Replaceable fair use File:Cheez-It-Box-Small.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Cheez-It-Box-Small.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. emerson7 06:00, 28 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Photographs of trademarked subjects[edit]

File:Skittles Original.jpg

Hello! I noticed you removed an image of mine from an article because it contained a trademarked logo on a package and wasn't marked as fair use. Wikipedia image use policy holds that photographs of three-dimensional objects almost always create a new copyright, regardless of whether items depicted in them are subject to copyright by others. When it comes to which image should be used in an article, fair use law states that images may be licensed under fair use only if no free equivalent exists. In interpreting the image use policy, this condition doesn't seem to be met as my image seems to provide such a free equivalent. Thanks. – Acdx (talk) 04:07, 30 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Judging by the speedy deletion templates that are on your picture of a Cheez-It box, it seems that the person who nominated the file for deletion thinks that it's an official product shot, and not your own photograph. You're right in that the distinction between an original work and just replicating a brand logo can get fuzzy.
The upload form doesn't seem to include an option for a photograph of a product at all, probably because these are expected to fall under "own work". – Acdx (talk) 04:38, 30 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

M&Ms packaging images[edit]

I've removed the M&M's packaging images you uploaded from the article they resided on, causing them to be orphaned. Per WP:NFG, the use of non-free images in a gallery like this is generally not supported. All images, being orphaned, are now subject to deletion. Please do not restore the images. If you have questions about this, please ask. Thank you, --Hammersoft (talk) 16:02, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Creating a user created montage of 9 copyrighted works isn't a way to fix this problem. I've tagged File:M&Ms-Flavor-Varieties.jpg with a disputed fair use rationale, subjecting it to deletion. See WP:NFLISTS #1 regarding montages. Thank you, --Hammersoft (talk) 15:43, 4 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've done similar with Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. A number of images were orphaned in the process. --Hammersoft (talk) 21:07, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Placing four of the images back in the article as you did here, interspersing them throughout it, is no better than galleries. Now the article is in violation of WP:NFLISTS. I'll be removing these images again. --Hammersoft (talk) 02:29, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Crumbs Bake Shop requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Apple-A5-Processor.png[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Apple-A5-Processor.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Terrillja talk 19:15, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for File:ProdPack-Pillsbury-Cakemix-Small.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:ProdPack-Pillsbury-Cakemix-Small.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

This is an automated message from VWBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Acoustic Kingdom Underground, and it appears to be a substantial copy of http://jamminjava.com/home/events/far-from-the-moon-featuring-raphael-bhatti-alex-flynn-ryan-linde-shelby-nea.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.

If substantial content is duplicated and it is not public domain or available under a compatible license, it will be deleted. I'm coming at this completely ignorant, but I saw Debra Arlyn and noticed the Wikimedia interview as a citation. Is there much precedent/policy surrounding that? It makes me nervous about WP:CIRCULAR and WP:OR issues.

Dagorhir photo[edit]

Hey. I was looking at the Dagorhir duel photo you added to the LARP page, and I think it might be better if you could upload a version with some of the surrounding grass and stuff cropped out, so that the people in the photo will appear larger at the thumbnail size on the article. I think that will focus on the important details of the photo (the people and their activity) rather than the unimportant surroundings of grass, driveway, etc. Ryan Paddy (talk) 21:02, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Fair Use Photos for Triscuit and Cinnamon Toast Crunch comment and thanks[edit]

Evan-Amos, thank you for the very nice photos uploaded to replace lower quality photos for these two articles. I appreciate the effort and care as another editor who contributes photos to improve articles. Your skill exceeds my own small efforts, but I know enough to appreciate what you've contributed. I wanted you to know that the resolution of the two photos was probably too high for Fair use, so another editor and I have uploaded reduced size copies of both images in the hope that your work will be preserved as being in compliance with Fair use guidelines. In the main, those principals require posting of lower resolution (smaller size) images which are sufficient to illustrate the product/item depicted, but not so detailed as to allow copying for infringing uses. I hope this makes sense and that you will continue your fine work which is clearly improving the encyclopedia. Please fell free to contact me if you have any questions. Cheers, mate! RE: picture of SNES PAL in infobox[edit]

It looks like its a better picture than the other one, but the angle's a little off (slightly different than your NA one, which makes it look odd in certain configurations). Still, I think it is probably a better bet overall than the existing one. Having experimented a little, the best solution seems to be to have them side-by-side like on the MD article - the positioning of the controller makes the NA one significantly wider than the PAL, so stacking them vertically either means using two different scales or having a lot of room around the PAL one. It also draws attention to the cut-off cable on the PAL image. I was thinking something like this, but with the tops of the consoles more-or-less lined up:

The North American SNES (circa 1991)The PAL version of SNES

Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 01:57, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

adding some space to the top of the file seems to have fixed it. it's not really out of place either, since it puts the SNES in the middle of the picture.Evan-Amos (talk) 03:00, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good to me and it's an improvement over what's there now IMHO. Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 03:07, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I like the new image. But UGH, side by side makes the consoles too small and the infobox too wide, it looks like crap now. If you need to adjust the North American image to not be excessively wide, please do that instead. Anomie 03:29, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If you guys want to play around with it, that's fine. I only noticed the PAL SNES picture and made a PNG of it, but I don't have much of an opinion of style; I'm okay with whatever happens, or if it's set back.Evan-Amos (talk) 04:42, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have to agree it would be better if the NA one was narrower (regardless of how they are orientated). The problem is we can't "play around with it" - the controller being where it is makes the NA image intrinsically wider than the PAL one. The only real possibility is to re-shoot the NA one with the controller on the right. Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 14:34, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Incidentally, I think vertically stacking them would be better, but I still, I think it's better now than it was before. Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 14:42, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Evan-Amos took the current too-wide picture, which is why I asked here for it to be redone with a better aspect. Anomie 16:17, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I know - when I said "we can't "play around with it"" it was in reply to his comment "If you guys want to play around with it, that's fine". Basically I was saying "the pic as it is at the moment is too wide and we can't fix it - you have to". That said, It is possible that a bit of photoshopping could achieve the desired result (since the cable is mostly hidden and the controller doesn't cover the console at all) but I'm not sure. I'll have a go tonight (I'm on GMT/UTC to give you an idea of when that might be).
While on the subject of re-shoots, I have to say I'm not entirely happy with the your (Evan-Amos's) GameCube image - the way it's angled makes it look like it's been propped up at the back, and it seems inconsistent with all the other console images you've taken in that respect (and just plain odd). I'm not sure about the colours either - it looks too purple (maybe that's what the North American ones look like, I don't know, but the ones in the UK are much bluer and less vibrant). Basically, I think the original one you made was better, even if it isn't consistent with he others.
Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 16:42, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I got a free minute and had a go at the photoshopping - It's a no-go I'm afraid. The lighting just isn't right (you can tell the source is in a different place) and the cable just kinda appears. Looks like one of the images will have to be re-done. I'm actually looking to pick up a Mega Drive II (which I intend to mod to get better sound) and a SNES at some point (when I find a good deal on eBay) so re-shooting the PAL one isn't out of the question. I have access to a DSLR (Nikon D3) and lighting equipment as well so may even be able to make something on-par with your pics with a little experimentation (and instruction from my dad - he's a photographer). Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 17:12, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If you look in the gallery you'll see that I've been trying to take most of the console images in a certain way, with the controller on the left, at the same depth as the system. I've tried other ways, but the problem that I ran into on the SNES was that the controller is way small compared to the console body and I had a hard time hiding the controller cord. Most of the other consoles pictures with the SNES I've seen will put the controller way into the foreground which makes the controller seem a lot bigger than it actually is, or they don't plug the controller in, have the cord cut out off screen or just photoshop the cord out all together.

I can probably try to retake the picture again of the gamecube in the future. I admit it doesn't match the other style of the other consoles. The weird thing about the color is that it always shows up off color from out of the camera, like this blue instead of purple. I color match it to purple based on pics of the purple gamecube that i got from the nintendo site.Evan-Amos (talk) 05:02, 19 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

They do seem to do that don't they (end up looking blue I mean)? It's probably a property of the plastic used or something, since almost all pics I've seen have been blue-ish. I'd say try to get it somewhere closer to the GC controller pics you've taken, which seem to be about the right hue (a little too saturated though). Also, if you aren't already getting the camera to save as some kind of RAW file do it - it makes editing so much easier. Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 06:06, 19 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Photoshop CS2 doesn't read the raw files made from the Sony A700, but CS3+ does, which I don't have/use. There are some hoops that you can just through to get them to work, like working through Lightroom or using a converter, I was for a time trying it out, but gave it up because of the hassle. And if you have the ability to use a Nikon D3 and equipment, you really should. We could finally get pictures of the Mega Drive and PAL consoles. If you email me then I can help you through taking the pictures and how to set up.Evan-Amos (talk) 00:06, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You might want to try Adobe DNG converter - it converts camera proprietary RAW files to Adobe Digital Negative files (basically generic raws). I used to use CS2 and had to use it to edit the files from the D3. If you have a card full of RAWS, it'll convert the whole lot in a batch, and doesn't take long (it's a set and forget type thing). It usually takes about 5-10 seconds per file, although that'll depend on the specs of your computer to a point.
As for me taking pics, I fully intend to learn how to use the equipment at some point, but my Dad uses it almost every day (it's his Camera etc) so getting a decent amount of time with it can be tricky.
Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 00:43, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Does he have an older DSLR or does he always trade up? As far as equipment, if you can get good window light or some natural set up, all you really need is a digital camera, a tripod and some white posterboard. I had planned on making a youtube video showing how to do this, as a send-to for people who want to contribute these type of pictures. I've been trying to take a steady amount of pictures recently (along with trying to actually play video games) so it's been put off. I have a script almost completely written for it, though.Evan-Amos (talk) 01:18, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
He's got some old film-based SLRs, but the previous DSLRs he used were owned by his employer - he was made redundant a few years back, so he lost access to the equipment (not that they had any use for a camera without a photographer, but they couldn't just give it to him). It's a shame, it's a good camera (Canon 5D I think), but now it's only occasionally used by random inexperienced members of staff.
The access to the lighting equipment isn't really an issue (it's stored in our garage and he doesn't use all that often - maybe 10-days a month or so) but the camera is almost always in use during the day :(.
Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 02:03, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

So, will either of you take a North American SNES picture with a better aspect ratio? Anomie 16:28, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well I won't - I live in the UK so if I do manage to get one for a decent price it'll almost certainly be a PAL one. Of course in the unlikely even I do get a North American one I'd be up for re-taking the pic. Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 16:32, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I would, but I've sold all my hardware months ago in favor of emulation. Personally I preferred the old main pic for the SNES article.--BeastSystem (talk) 17:07, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'll try taking a picture again some time in the future, but it won't be that soon, as I just took a ton of pictures of systems that need to be done. Also, the SNES picture I take needs a lot of editing because mine is all yellowed. I might be able to find a compromise in the controller positioning somehow, though.Evan-Amos (talk) 17:23, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Sega CD page[edit]

Yeah, I actually had a look at it earlier today and it is certainly a bit of a mess (Sega really was a pain back then… so many combinations). Perhaps they should be arranged in a kind of gallery/multi-image like the controllers on the gamepad page (like the Saturn and PlayStation controllers). I don't foresee there being much drama on that page - I don't think most people who follow the MD page follow it. Also, there is significantly less difference between the regional variations than with the MDs (still two different models though :/). Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 17:05, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

RE: dreamcast controller[edit]

Funny how these things work eh? It was pretty bad wasn't it - I basically saw it and decided I couldn't leave it like it was when there was a half-decent alternative (i.e. the one in the Dreamcast infobox), so did a bit of shopping. The Dreamcast seems to be the only console that had a decent image before you came along, so I'm surprised no-one did it sooner (including me for that matter).

Looking at them both now (assuming you're meaning the same one as you put on the Dreamcast page), I'm not sure which is better (other then the resolution, which is pretty moot when it's scaled down to 220px wide). That said, the original that I took it off was originally fairly yellowy, so the colours in yours are probably more accurate. Still, either of them are infinitely better than the one that was there before.

While we're talking, I fixed the wikilink in your "Photo by Evan-Amos" template - I hope you don't mind. When you link things on other Wikis (such as linking to a Wikipedia page from Wikimedia Commons) you need to add a prefix to take you to the right place. If linking to the English Wikipedia, you can either use ":en:" or ":w:", the "en" being for English and the "w" being wikipedia (if you just use "w" it assumes English, while if you just use "en" it assumes Wikipedia). Similarly, to link to the German Wikipedia, you'd add ":de:", and to link to the French Wiktionary you'd add ":fr:wikt:". To put it more into context, to fix the broken links on your Commons user page, change, for example, [[History of video game consoles (third generation)|Third Generation]] to [[:en:History of video game consoles (third generation)|Third Generation]].

Also, I have been playing around with my Dad's camera recently, but I can't seem to be able to get the depth of field right. When taking pics like this, what would you recommend, lens- and distance-wise?

Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 22:00, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have a different picture of the controller I was going to start working on (just the controller), then I saw the picture you had done. The Dreamcast and controller I have at hand are in pretty bad shape, so I have to clean it up tons in Photoshop. And it's white, which is always hard to photograph/cut out. I gave up trying to cut them out and am just leaving the background a gray-ish white gradiant. But I might just wait and see if I can't get something in better condition now that there's a picture up.
Thanks for the heads up about the other thing, I changed it.
Yeah, no problem helping you out on the camera stuff. I'd prefer it if we did it over email, though, because it could be a lot of back and forth. Also, I can show you pictures of how I do my set-up and etc. My email is "evan.amos /at\ gmail.com"

RE: Proper picture formatting[edit]

Upload the PS2 one with the full background and I'll do the shadows for you and explain how I did it step by step with pics (I don't have original PSDs for the other ones and it seems a waste to do them again). As it stands at the moment they look worse than with a full background (or the existing pic due to the odd shadows) so I have temporarily reverted the additions of the pic so that it can be done right :).

The picture itself looks great so once the shadows are sorted it will most certainly be re-instated :).

As for the policy, I don't think it is technically preferred one way or the other, but for infoboxes, which have a grey background, when the object is on a white background it just look "off", so it is a kind of de facto rule for actual items (an unwritten rule as it were).

PS3 image[edit]

Hello again. Seeing as you have access to both a slim and a fat PS3, would you mind making a proper replacement for the infobox? I was thinking probably something like this [2], but with the consoles closer together and only one controller (preferably a DS3 since it's shipped with all current consoles and applies to both slims and fats). About as far apart as the one already there should be fine (but at an angle similar to the one you've already done of the fatty). Cheers. Alphathon™ (talk) 19:11, 31 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

PS3 infobox[edit]

It's kinda hard to explain. The whole point of an infobox image is to act as identification of the item in question. As such if there are significant variations (such as PS3 fat and slim… or PS2 fat and slim… or the Xbox 360 and 360 S etc.) it is preferable to have both/all in the infobox. Unfortunately that is usually not possible as there are so few people around who take pictures and even fewer who do so and have both/all forms of a console. Most of the time we have to make do with two similarly positioned images shopped together or placed side-by-side (see the infoboxes of Mega Drive and SNES for examples). The Xbox 360 article is particularly problematic as it has so many SKUs. For quite a while it had the image of the three consoles in the infobox, which can now be found in the "discontinued models" section (or something to that effect - I can't remember the wording). Believe it or not, that's actually about 5 pictures shopped together (all taken by me, but all independently, basically so that I could get the most available resolution out of my crappy 2MP mobile phone camera… I really need to borrow my dad's DSLR at some point and re-shoot some of my pics; there's only so much Photoshop can do). Anyway, that one was scuppered when the Xbox 360 S came along. At some point, if I can get a decent shot, I'll shop in a pic of my Arcade with the "S" currently there (if you could take one of yours at the same angle that'd be better, but there's no hurry).

Anyway, there's no real hard and fast rule on this (like with the transparent background) so if no-one can get it looking at least "good enough" (the PS3 one isn't pretty, but does a good job of identification and it's positively ugly) it just doesn't happen, especially since most people with Photoshop/photography skills are visual perfectionists.

BTW, when you finish your posts, type ~~~~ and it will add your signature to the post. If you don't, SineBot comes along and gives you a really ugly version instead (for example after your last post: —Preceding unsigned comment added by Evan-amos (talk • contribs) 3:16 pm, Today (UTC+1)). Also, you can customise your sig in the preferences page to look however you want (assuming you know wiki-markup or html/css. It's fairly simple and I can explain if you don't know, or you could just look at other people sigs and figure it out from there).

RE: GameCube compatibility picture[edit]

Don't worry about it. I don't think that the issue is caused by it being 16-bit, it just doesn't make sense (and I work with 16-bit files all the time with no issues). The issue may be with the white balance or something though. Anyway, glad you decided to upload a higher res version; colour-corrected or not :). EDIT: Oh, it seems you reverted it. Never mind. RE: GameCube compatibility picture update[edit]

"this whole talking structure drives me crazy, i can never figure out where to go or where to reply to things."

Don't worry about it - if you reply on my talk page, Wikipedia will tell me; if you reply here, it'll show up in my watchlist - it makes no difference to me really.

"but i meant more of a color space issue, the 16-bit thing was a pain because i had to lower it to save as a jpg, at least in the default photoshop save thing. i checked it out, and the reason the color was going crazy is because lightroom would change the photo to ProPhoto RGB instead of the normal sRGB IE6."

Ah, that would explain it. There's probably a way to set Lightroom to only use sRGB (or another colour space; I myself favour Adobe RGB 1998, as it has a wider colour gamut, but it really doesn't matter if it's not being printed as almost all monitors can't even show full sRGB), or even just retain the original colour space, but I don't know how. It'll be in the options somewhere though I'm sure.

Anyway, how were you converting it to the other colour space - convert and assign give different results. I don't know which you'd want to use off the top of my head though. Alphathon™ (talk) 20:17, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I did it sort of a "dumb" way. I just took the picture that I was working, that was in the other color space (couldn't figure out how to change the RGB color type of the file itself) and hit CTRL-A, and copied the whole thing into a new file. It then goes to the default color space, but I've lost the camera metadata. I have a version that should work now, but it seems that any update will erase notes on the picture, which someone did all in German.

Evan-amos (talk) 20:26, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That was me actually (German notes). Anyway, if you click the edit link at the top of the page, you should see the code for the notes at the bottom, underneath the licence template ({{pd-self}}). If your new version is the same size as the old one, I think the notes stay put. If not, all you have to do is paste them in and change the coordinates to correspond to the new size. For example, if the new image is 3200px×3200px (twice the size to make the numbers convenient), this:
{{ImageNote|id=1|x=870|y=216|w=135|h=141|dimx=1800|dimy=1800|style=2}}{{en|GameCube Memory Card}}{{de|GameCube-Speicherkarte}}{{ImageNoteEnd|id=1}}
…would become this:
{{ImageNote|id=1|x=1740|y=432|w=270|h=282|dimx=3200|dimy=3200|style=2}}{{en|GameCube Memory Card}}{{de|GameCube-Speicherkarte}}{{ImageNoteEnd|id=1}}
It's fairly simple really.
Alphathon™ (talk) 20:53, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. The colour-space options in Photoshop are in the Image menu, near the bottom somewhere. Just play around with them and see how it turns out. Alphathon™ (talk) 20:54, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

RE: png versus jpg files[edit]

Actually, the .png version is no worse quality than the .jpg; it's all to do with how they're scaled. If you take a close look at the .jpg version (when small, like on your page) you should notice two things: first, compression artefacts on the .jpg version. This gives the illusion of more detail, but actually is just an artefact of Wikipedia scaling the image - it has to re-save the image in JPEG format on the fly so artefacting is inevitable (this doesn't happen on the PNG because it is lossless). Second is that the .jpg is fairly heavily aliased. I don't know why, but the anti-aliasing on Wikipedia's .jpg scaler doesn't seem to be as strong as the .png one. Probably the best way to see this is on a large-ish version, such as the preview images on Commons. zoom in on the images (by about 1.5× - 2×) and it should become immediately apparent how lossy the .jpg actually is. In other words, the .jpg only appears to be higher quality (read: more detailed) due to quality loss in the scaling process. It also appears that the .jpg version has some kind of "sharpening" applied to it (similar to the Photoshop "sharpen" tool) which is an inherently lossy process. Since this is applied universally, it also has to be a best-guess type setting, that may make edges clearer on some images, but actually harm others.

Regardless of that though, you have to bear a few other things in mind:

  1. Not all computer monitors are created equal, and nor are all operating systems (at least from a settings POV); what may appear to be a negligible difference on one set-up can show up as a fairly significant one on another.
  2. Not everybody uses the same skin for Wikipedia, and as such infoboxes do not show up as grey for everyone so. This also applies to those sites that mirror Wikipedia pages.

RE: Sega Genesis pictures[edit]

That's a tricky one. The main reason the Japanese pics are used in the infobox is because they were the original versions with the PAL Mega Drives and NA Genesises (Geneses?) being derivatives of them. I'd say probably stick them in the variations article for now and perhaps start a discussion on the Mega Drive talk page. Whatever the outcome there will always be someone who isn't happy with it (be it someone who feels discriminated since their version isn't used or whatever). There are times when I wish Sega had just stuck with one design and brand worldwide - it's just to damn complicated. Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 21:05, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think we could use a Genesis 2 in the main picture instead of the JP MD 2. Was planning on buying a near mint Genesis 2 to use for the picture, but if you can get a picture of a Genesis 2 in the same style asthis then I think we can just do that. It will be like the SNES articles main picture, features both systems, and from both regions. Undo weight is also addressed because the Genesis 2 is smaller. It's also the most recognizable model of the Mega Drive/Genesis based on system sales.--SexyKick 21:43, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That seems like a good compromise. I'll take a picture that matches the style of the current one.

Awesome, I'm looking forward to it (with no controller.) You'll get used to the talk pages sooner or later. You take really good pictures, do you have a 6 button controller? I've thought maybe this picture could look better.--SexyKick 23:44, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hm, I see. So you're saying you can't take a picture of the Genesis 2 in the same position they have their Mega Drive 2 in? cause this looks terrible Pardon the crappy edit of the pic, I'm tired. But this is just to give you an idea of what I'm going for with the main pic. Perhaps you could take a picture nearly identical, and use the photoshop angle tool?--SexyKick 07:44, 30 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Those controller pics are amazing!!--SexyKick 19:23, 30 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'd still like to try for the angled Genesis 2 if possible.--SexyKick 23:33, 30 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't really have the option. I only own the two american versions, and the other PAL versions have only been taken on in a front facing way, so I had to take the picture to match them. The japanese ones are angled, but very distorted and small. If you can get an angled version of the other versions, then something could be worked out.
Well your picture of the Genesis 2 doesn't need to be exactly matching the style of the JPMD2. I mean this is getting pretty close to what I want, and if we can just get close to the style, that's perfectly fine. I think the way you took the Genesis 2 picture just needs a slightly different angle, maybe a bit more focused on the top, rotated slightly. You certainly have great skill with these pictures IMHO.--SexyKick 00:09, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe you could take a bunch of different pictures of the Genesis 2 at a bunch of similar angles and let me pick which would go good next to the JP Mega Drive 1??--SexyKick 02:09, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please : ( I really don't want to have to buy a Genesis 2 and take some amateur pics that will be nowhere near as good as the ones you can take.--SexyKick 05:05, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with what you've said. I'd like the article to be called Sega Genesis, I have at least two other supporters on that article name change, and a whole list of reasons why Sega Genesis is the common name. However, your Genesis 1 + Pal MD2 is still the main infobox pic. I really liked this older version of the page that had the JP MD1 with the complete Genesis 2 in the infobox. I think the rest of the included pics in the article are better period. The other editors all had a talk, and consensus went to remove most of them, though there was no clear consensus on removing the add on game screenshots.
I'm willing to start a discussion about changing the name to Genesis, but I have a feeling it will make me even more unpopular with some of the other Mega Drive editors. Also even if the name is changed, I still think the best way to do the info box pics is to still with the JP MD1 (which is IMHO the best looking model of Genesis 1, with the gold 16-bit letters), and US Genesis 2 (the most common model of Genesis/Mega Drive to be sold).--SexyKick 05:56, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I take it you'll be willing to come to the discussion of the article name change when I make it to support the name change?--SexyKick 06:56, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure what you're talking about. remove pictures? like, the controller and genesis 3? where do these discussions take place? i looked at the talk page on the article and it is almost empty. other than that, i think that the name should be something along the lines of Mega Drive/Genesis, as it is the mega drive in a large part of the world, and seems to be fair since the english-speaking world knows it by both names. i rubs me the wrong way on instinct just because i never really knew it as mega drive and prefer it as genesis since that's what i know it by, but logically, the title and references should be split throughout the article.

also, i'm woefully absent from most all discussions that take place on wikipedia other than what happens on my own talk page. the community seems to be something that people who are text editors fall into, because information and tone of article is largely up to debate, while i really just find a bad picture and take a better one, and rarely have my judgement/involvement questioned or challenged, because pictures are a lot more absolute. i apologize if i come off as aloof or detached because of it. Evan-Amos (talk) 17:32, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The pictures I was talking about are in this version of the article. Isn't that infobox setup better? Plus the Sega CD and 32X game screenshots? The talk was archived, and was extremely lengthy. These pictures are either moved, or removed from the article already.
An article name compromise is something I would think to be ideal, but it doesn't adhere to Wikipedia standards (no compromise article names, just common name articles). I'm only reluctant to start a new discussion on the topic, because I believe most editors will oppose the change, and be in favor of sticking with Mega Drive. Virtually every source used in the article, out of the 130 sources, calls it the Sega Genesis. In fact, while I have not read every source wikipedia links to there, every single one I have read calls it the Sega Genesis, and if Mega Drive is mentioned, it's just informing you of the name in the rest of the world, or explaining why it's called Genesis here.
All of this is why I hate the sega genesis page and mostly avoid it; just a lot of wiki drama and a seemly war of attrition. as far as the pictures go that were removed, i don't know if i have much of a reason to keep them. my gut says that the sega genesis is such a sprawling mess of add-ons and different models that you'd want to keep the page true to the actual genesis, and leave the rest to the individual pages for the 32x and the Sega CD. I would love, love, love to get my hands on the Sega CD, 32X, Nomad, etc, in an effort to clean up the rest of the pictures, though. oh, and when i edit this talk section, do you get a notice for it?Evan-Amos (talk) 19:08, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Your talk page is on my watch list, so I notice if it was changed. I don't get the same kind of notice, as if you leave a message on my talk page, but personally I don't need that notice.
I think a good picture of the Nomad could well be a good replacement for the Genesis 3 picture as a matter of fact. I notice the article lacks a section that mentions the Sega Nomad, and I think adding it to the 32-bit era and beyond section makes the most "article timeline" sense. I think it needs to tie into the article more since it's also known as the "Sega Genesis Nomad" and is included in the sales section. It's certainly hard to not let the article fill up with pictures etc. I just hope you can come up with an awesome picture of the Genesis 2 to go next to the JP MD 1, hopefully with a more in focus part of the "Genesis" logo. I wish we could just go back to having the GenesisComplete picture in the infobox with the JP MD1, because I feel it's the full evolution of the console. It came out in Japan with that model, and really ended in America with the 32X and Sega CD attached.--SexyKick 20:10, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, I didn't even know this was going on. I wish I had taken a picture of my plain Genesis 2 for the info box before I sold it. Would have been a good combo.--BeastSystem (talk) 17:17, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The issue isn't a Genesis 2 picture, but more of a need for better Mega Drive pictures. I would give anything if someone would take an angled picture of a Mega Drive that doesn't suck. At this point, I don't know if it matters, I feel that I'll never be able to get rid of those two distorted japanese Mega Drive pics.Evan-Amos (talk) 17:26, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

SEGA Mega Drive / Genesis photos[edit]

Hello there. I reverted your edit changing the photos in the Mega Drive article. We agreed upon those in many months of debate. Please do not change them without further discussion. Thanks. DCEvoCE (talk) 17:28, 23 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there. I was wondering if you could take the Sega Genesis 2 picture with the 6 button controller attached so we get the final controller into the infobox as well like they do with the Saturn and Xbox articles.--BeastSystem (talk) 20:04, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I thought about exactly that for a bit when I was taking the picture but a lot of the Sega stuff I actually own is in storage, so I didn't have access to the six-button controller when I did the reshoot the other day. Also, I was torn between doing it or not since I wasn't sure that it was ever a pack-in controller with the system. All of the boxes I've ever seen for the Genesis show the three-button controller, so I'm not sure if it's the same case like the the Saturn and Xbox controllers, which replaced the old controller completely. That said, I would try to do it and see how it looks if I had the controller with me.Evan-Amos (talk) 23:47, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
it had been a pack in controller in the last few revisions of the console. Anyway I look forward to the hopeful future picture.--BeastSystem (talk) 23:56, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Heh. I was actually just coming here to ask for the same thing.--SexyKick 19:55, 9 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I found a commercial showing that the 6 button pad eventually came with the console.--SexyKick 00:25, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Huh. Well, if I have the chance to round up the materials again I wouldn't mind taking a picture of the six-button with the model 2. It makes sense for the idea of it.Evan-Amos (talk) 16:02, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, I didn't want to seem impatient, and I know you're on a hiatus from taking photos, but did you think you might still get around to this?--SexyKick 01:41, 28 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I wonder if this is too far back for you to notice I posted a comment? (not trying to be impolite)--SexyKick 04:10, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, sorry man. I usually have a hard time seeing things in the older comments. But I will be taking new pictures at some point, hopefully in the next two or three months. I've been doing a home renovation project for the past year and so all of my camera stuff is currently packed away. I also don't have a place to set up and take pictures until the work is done, so it's mostly been waiting on that. I do have some stuff that I've been buying in the past year, like a non-yellow SNES and the Sega Genesis with 6-button controller, so I'm hoping to retake some things and add some new pictures as well. I can't wait until I get back into it, because I have a few new things I'd be interested in doing as well. -- Evan-Amos (talk) 01:07, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I remembered we were talking about if we weren't sure or not if the controller ever came with the Genesis, but I found this picture and I think that makes everything crystal clear. : ) SexyKick 22:44, 22 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yay!!! Go Evan!--SexyKick 23:20, 28 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I finally got an area re-set for photography as well as a new camera, so I figured I'd make this the first of some new photos. Evan-Amos (talk) 04:35, 29 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please write up photography instructions[edit]

Hi. I came across your excellent photos. I would like to take some photos of some older electronic items, and would like to learn what other people are using photograph setup / editing tools / settings / tips, so photos can be used on Wikipedia. Anyone can take cr#ppy photos, but nice clean photos like yours are much better. Maybe you could write some of it up on your user page? Thanks in advance! • SbmeirowTalk • 03:39, 3 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've actually been meaning to make a youtube video explaining exactly that (I've got a script almost entirely written) but haven't yet because I don't have any good video shooting equipment. It's something that I do want to accomplish, though, so I hope to have it done eventually. What were the electronic items that you wanted to photograph?Evan-Amos (talk) 20:41, 3 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Xbox-360S-Console-Set.jpg[edit]

Hi. I thought I should let you know that there appears to be a shadow error on File:Xbox-360S-Console-Set.jpg - the shadow from the console abruptly stops underneath the controller's right analog stick. I'd fix it myself, but it's probably better if done off the original files (and I'm kinda snowed under at the moment anyway). Alphathon /'æɫfə.θɒn/ (talk) 20:18, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I changed the file a bit. The shadow is the reflection of the consoles shadow, coupled with the the shadow of the controller. It's a bit harder to tell because the curves clipped it off, but it should be better now. I have a hard time tell those fine shadow graduations because I use two crappy monitors, one that's always too bright and the other that's too dark. It's why I sometimes re-upload things two or three times in a row. Evan-Amos (talk) 20:49, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

PSone[edit]

Hello again. Do you have access to a PSone (i.e. the redesigned PS1 console)? If so, would it be possible to take a picture of it without the screen. Ideally it'd be at the same angle as the original model photo as it will end up alongside it in the PS1 infobox. Thanks. P.S. I haven't had a chance to look over Jammin' Java article yet. I should be able to do so some time next week. Alphathon /'æɫfə.θɒn/ (talk) 22:16, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have the PSOne. Funny enough I had just recently gotten it out of storage to take some pictures of it again, along with some other items. It should be coming at some point, though.
Also, do you really think that it belongs in the infobox? The PSOne came out so late in the product's life that I think that most people don't associate it that strongly with the PlayStation brand. It really doesn't seem to have the weight or status to warrant a place in the infobox.
Though, it wouldn't hurt to look at it together if I had the photos. What sucks though is I don't have either the PSOne off-white controller or memory cards to make a good set photo. I currently only own the (broken) system itself. I haven't seen the controllers and memories cards when I've been out and about either. Meh. Evan-Amos (talk) 02:43, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well that's a happy coincidence smiley face.
Honestly, I'm not sure if it's really required. However, a really rather poor image of it was added to the infobox by Gaming&Computing (the same user who flipped around the PS2 image), along with its logo. Given that a lot of other consoles (Xbox 360, PlayStation 2 & 3, NES, SNES, Mega Drive/Genesis etc) have multiple images depicting alternative versions it is at least consistent and I don't think it's detrimental (in principle anyway). As such, I thought rather than causing conflict etc we might as well do it properly and then decide about whether to keep it or not (so at to have a balanced view of how it would be if implemented properly). Heck, if you take the new pic and it doesn't get used there, it'll almost certainly end up elsewhere anyway (maybe instead of the screened version on PlayStation for example). Alphathon /'æɫfə.θɒn/ (talk) 03:09, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't aware of that and I just checked the page. Ugh. It drives me crazy to spend so much time fixing up these infoboxes with pictures to see a pic like that in one of them again. I should have the new console pic within a day. Looking through my things, I do have one of the PSOne memory cards, so it's just a matter of getting a controller. I'll have to check out the VGNY store again and see if I can't find one. Evan-Amos (talk) 03:59, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Magnavox Odyssey[edit]

Just a heads up, I've nominated File:Magnavox-Odyssey-Console-Set.jpg for FPC here. Someone else nominated the PS4 image, though it has been put in holding after they noticed that it was meant to be a temporary image. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:43, 29 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania[edit]

Did you ever consider talking about your project at Wikimania? I think this is the kind of thing a lot of people would like to listen to and learn more about, and this year is London (specialty European systems, perhaps?). It may even be possible to apply for a scholarship from WMF to travel there... I got to go to Hong Kong last August on scholarship. Submissions start today, so if you're interested... — Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:21, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, thanks for the heads up! I'm really thinking about it, and I'll most likely try for a scholarship (the only way I'd be able to go). It would be a great opportunity/experience to go, and I don't think I'd mind giving a presentation about the Kickstarter/project. And thanks again for the photo nominations! Evan-Amos (talk) 08:04, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think the presentation (and you) would be a shoo in, and I do hope you give it a shot. No worries about the noms; very nice images. I'm still trying to replicate stuff like that, but nothing yet. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:32, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Menacer[edit]

Any chance that you'd have a picture of a Menacer in the pipeline any time soon? No pressure—just curious (before I go looking for one) I am watching this page for the near future—no need to whisperback czar  01:20, 9 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, just wanted to get back to you. I'm aware of the Sega Menacer, and would photograph it if I ever happened upon one, but it is not something that is in the pipeline. It's a very low priority as far as pictures go, so I wouldn't be buying it explicitly for photographing (too many other things to get still). Because of that, someone else would most likely have to take a picture of it. Evan-Amos (talk) 19:18, 9 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. Thanks I am no longer watching this page—whisperback if you'd like a response czar  21:50, 9 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

FP candidate[edit]

Hi Evan, just a heads up: I've nominated two of your images of the Sega Genesis for FPC here. Cheers! (And I do hope that you applied for Wikimania; sounds interesting.) — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:12, 17 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Crisco, thanks for the noms! Also, I did apply for Wikimania. They said that I made it through the first round of applications (of four or five?), but I should know by April something if I actually get to go. I think it'd be a great experience, that's for sure. Thanks for putting the idea in my head to apply. Evan-Amos (talk) 18:54, 18 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Awesome! I'm sure you'll make it, considering the scope of your contributions to the project. It should be quite interesting, and introduce you to aspects you may not have thought about before (for instance, last year Doc James talked about a collaboration with Translators without Borders that was quite interesting: translating Wikipedia's quality medical articles into various languages, so that the information is readily available to those who need it most... I do some translating, but the breadth of the subjects they were translating was startling). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:16, 19 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Since the Kickstarter I've met other Wikipedians in real life, which has been an experience that made me see the larger scope of Wikipedia. When you stick to one thing you don't realize all of the projects and their dynamics going on around you. What I've been learning so far has been very interesting, to say the least. WonderSwan and WonderSwan Color request[edit]

I don't know if you talk requests or not, but i noticed you provided an image for the SwanCrystal in the WonderSwan article. The current images for the original WonderSwan and WonderSwan Color do not appear very informative. I was wondering if it was possible if you could help the article with better images for both if it is in your best interest. Your help would be greatly appreciated. If not, then thank you for your time in responding. Lucia Black (talk) 18:51, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Wow Evan, that's a lot of pixels. I think I'll bring these by FPC if you don't mind. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:26, 26 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • Probably should have asked before, but are you pleased with what you've got? The nomination is open and has several supports, but I just caught that you had changed for the red GameSwan (which is actually better received at FPC than the earlier one), and am hoping that we don't end up with FPs that aren't in articles. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:35, 28 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I would go with the red SwanCrystal over the blue one. The red is the original and I used photoshop to change its color to make the blue picture. The color swapping isn't perfect, so I think that the red is the stronger picture. It also helps a bit to give clearer distinctions between each of the models. Evan-Amos (talk) 12:39, 28 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I didn't realize that. Well, so long as everything is stable, you should have another three FP credits within a week (with the usual year or so before they reach the main page). Thank you for everything. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:52, 28 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

In time for Halloween[edit]

After Hafspajen posted on my talk page, I took a look at Category:Pumpkins and realized we don't actually have any good images of the pumpkin itself. Since you are (AFAIK) in the US, and do food photography once in a while (I really should try nominating some of those), do you think you'd be able to get a decent photograph of a pumpkin? Something like File:Soursop, Annona muricata.jpg would be beautiful, if you have the time and drive. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:15, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Are you talking about the "classic" orange pumpkin typically used for Jack-o-Lanterns? I could, the only problem is those are seasonal items. I'm not sure if I could buy one until Halloween comes around. Evan-Amos (talk) 14:42, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yeah, that's what I was thinking of. No hurry, of course. BTW, I nominated your image of Chex Mix at FPC; very good quality, especially for a PowerShot (my PowerShot A560 didn't turn out that many good photographs, but that may have been the terrible shooting conditions in Indonesia). I was interested in your Goldfish Crackers, but there appears to be a bit of discoloration or something along the top edge... not quite sure what's happening there. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:46, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You can get really good results from a lot of "simple" digital cameras, but it takes effort to set up the lighting. I used an opaque trash can that I bought for five bucks from Target, then cut a hole in the top so I could rest my digital camera in it. Then I'd use window light and a timer. Evan-Amos (talk) 01:13, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Brilliantly simple, yet the results speak for themselves. I'll have to remember that the next time I try product photography (I've been focusing on architectural photography for the past couple weeks, as the skies are nice and clear; the lead image at Blenduk Church was taken just last week).01:37, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Mars-Bar-UK-Wrapper-Small.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Mars-Bar-UK-Wrapper-Small.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

@Stefan2: Jesus Christ, this is why I stopped doing these. The picture that I uploaded is one that I took myself. It says on the infopage, and even has the camera metadata on the page. The only reason it's described as non-free is because the candy bar has a logo as the main focus, which puts it into a gray area for being free content. Hence, the reason it's non-free. And there is no good text example for something like this, because the packaging of candy is often very tied with the product and cannot be reproduced without pictures. Evan-Amos (talk) 20:51, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think the issue may be a little different from what was originally suggested, and easily rectified. Per {{PD-textlogo}}, the logo on the Mars wrapper is not actually copyrightable. Thus, your photo of it can be a free image. But you need to license it as such. I wish this had been explained better in the nomination, but that seems to be the case. So you can rectify this by either changing the license to a free image by you, or just reloading the same image under a free license. Rlendog (talk) 00:05, 14 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

New nomination[edit]

Product photography?

Hi Evan, sadly the snacks ended up failing FPC. I've decided to try File:RadioShack-ctr-119.jpg. Nice to branch out, after all . Speaking of branching out, how do you like this phone picture? I just wish I knew how to reduce lens flare when shooting straight on. My biggest concern with this image...  — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:46, 7 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Glad to see you're back. Sorry about the ColecoVision. I noticed the age (and cleaned up a bit of the background), but thought the technical quality was up to par. Of course, if we can have something bigger... :) — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:34, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Don't worry about the Coleco pic. It's more of a personal thing, but it was funny that it came about right as I bought a ColecoVision. It just came into today, so expect a new photo soon.
As far as the phone picture goes, I don't think that most people would notice the reflection. You can't really avoid it when shooting something straight on, though. If you angle it, you can lose the reflection, but then you have distortion. I think most people either correct the distortion or just Photoshop the reflection out.
As far as quality, sharpness can be an issue when using a kit lens for a close style macro shot. I never thought much about it until I [compared the two]. A macro lens will give you a much better picture, but then you have to spend money for on the lens. This photography thing is a real slippery slope when it comes to spending money and buying equipment, because you'll constantly find reasons to get more stuff. Get out while you can! Evan-Amos (talk) 04:50, 20 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Macro lens? Check (and very nice for portraits). Slippery slope? Check! Don't feel like jumping off just yet though. :) Thanks for the feedback. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:52, 20 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Interview request[edit]

Hello Evan-Amos, The WikiProject Video Games Newsletter is looking for editors to feature for its first and second quarter of 2015. This sounds like it's a long way off, but time catches up to us pretty quickly. The WP:VG Newsletter is hoping to highlight the topic of high quality images (especially featured images), and given your contributions to the project in this area we think you would make an excellent candidate for an interview. Please let me know either way if you are interested and if you agree then either I or GamerPro64 will contact you with a list of interview questions. You can get a sense of the kinds of questions you will be asked by reviewing the featured editor interviews at the Newlsetter's index. And of course you'll be notified again when the interview runs in the Newsletter. -Thibbs (talk) 15:03, 16 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm happy to do an interview. Just let me know whenever you're ready to do it. Evan-Amos (talk) 04:53, 20 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thibbs and I agreed on having me do the interview. So I'll let you know when we're ready. Most likely it'll be in the second quarter of 2015. GamerPro64 02:34, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Update on the interview. I wrote up some questions for your to answer. When you get the chance, the questions can be found here. Cheers. GamerPro64 22:28, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Just want to make sure that you are finished answering the questions for the interview. It's going to be published this quarter so if you want to look at them questions or change some of your answers that's all right by me. GamerPro64 14:45, 8 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestions for future[edit]

Hello. My name is Crazyboy279. I would like to thank you for your work in Wikimedia Commons for video game consoles. And since you have access to great photos, I would like to ask you something. If you have any Xbox One, PlayStation 4 or Wii U photos, please upload them. In addition to this, could you edit your Xbox 360 image to include the new Xbox 360 E. That would be great. Thank you! --Crazyboy279 (talk) 22:46, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Vanamo Online Game Museum[edit]

I was surprised to find your Kickstarter while browsing through, well, Kickstarter. I don't have any disposable income to chip your way, but I've forwarded a link to the WMNY chapter head, as this seems like the kind of thing they might have a little bit of budget for (not 8.5k, but perhaps enough to help push it over the line in the last three days). If it's not successful, have you considered a WMF grant? Sven Manguard Wha? 17:35, 31 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the interest and help, Sven! Actually, I've never really thought about applying for a WMF grant before. I looked through what they did fund and I wonder if they think I'd qualify for it, but I could always try it. I appreciate the heads up, though. So we'll see what happens! A barnstar for you![edit]

The Real Life Barnstar
Congratulations on your well-deserved success in your Kickstarter campaign! (I chipped in when I learned about it this morning, and passed the link around.) I've been noticing and appreciating your work in video gaming articles for a while now, but did not know about the story behind them (or that all the professional ones were by you) until I read your petapixel piece. I love what you are trying to do, and I hope your online game museum becomes all that you envision and more. ragesoss (talk) 23:36, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • 👍 Like Solid work. I was actually inspired by your stuff to do some of my own photographs, though the work wasn't nearly as good (can't well get an IBM 7330 home, and even if I could I haven't been able to set up studio lighting conditions)... File:Nokia X1-01 (used).jpg and File:IBM 7330 on white background.jpg are used on the English Wikipedia. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:18, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • +1 Dude, this is seriously cool. Thank you for your hard work and contributions. I will try to replicate your work as best as I can (if that's cool). Marcus Qwertyus (talk) 07:40, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for all of the well wishes you guys! I'm more than happy to do this work because I know how much it helps Wikipedia. And you're more than welcome to replicate this, Marcus. I can't possibly do it alone, and there's so much out there that needs to be documented. I wish you luck! Evan-Amos (talk) 06:36, 4 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I found your article at petapixel.com. Churchill noted: "We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give." You have made a great life! For your online game museum, you might want to contact Tim Arnold at the Pinball Hall of Fame as they do donations and may be willing to help out. On a different, in uploading your photos, have you considered adding your name to the file name? For example, instead of File:Almond-joy-broken.jpg, the file could be called File:Evan-Amos-Almond-joy-broken.jpg or File:Almond-joy-broken-Evan-Amos.jpg. While not direct credit, at least your name would be carried with each image via the link when the image is used. -- Jreferee (talk) 04:56, 7 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the suggestions, Jreferee! I just checked out the Pinball Hall of Fame site. If I ever go to Las Vegas I'm really going to try and visit. As far as pictures and credit, this whole Kickstarter has given me a lot of ideas about how I can handle things from now on. I might just use your suggestion, though! Users swapping jpg for png[edit]

Users are swapping jpg for png despite Wikipedia:IUP#FORMAT. For future photographs, can you just upload them to jpg? Users are opting for png versions probably because the transparent backgrounds match the infoboxes. The only subject area I've checked for this were video game console photos. « Ryūkotsusei » 17:45, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've started Wikipedia talk:Image use policy#Users swapping jpg for png to see how we should treat existing and future uploads. « Ryūkotsusei » 17:56, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I had started to upload the png versions because that was how other people had done it at the time for console infobox photos. Also, some of the jpg images I'd upload would end up being converted to png files by someone else, so it seemed easier to do it myself. I just kept up with it and only create png versions for images that would be placed in an infobox. I have had people contact me to say that they like the access to the transparent png files for personal and artistic use outside of Wikipedia, so there is merit to having them here and I think deleting them is a bit absurd.
As for which goes in the infobox itself, png or jpg, I see reasons for both. I think improved optimization of the jpg thumbnails makes them look nicer for the boxes, though, so I tend to lean toward jpg. Evan-Amos (talk) 19:10, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Light/Heavy Sixer[edit]

Evan, the picture you have named as a heavy sixer is in fact a light sixer. Those were produced from '78 to '80 and also have six switches, but a much lighter plastic. The heavy sixer has heavier plastic and a curved front. You can see an actual heavy sixer here http://atariage.com/2600/systems/sys_AtariVCS.jpg. --Marty Goldberg (talk) 05:30, 24 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Wgungfu: Okay, thanks for explaining. I didn't realize that there were two sixers. I'll fix the naming on the files. Evan-Amos (talk) 08:15, 24 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Meanwhile, this thing is still so much heavier than all of the other models. I have to wonder how much the real heavy sixer weighs. Evan-Amos (talk) 08:16, 24 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well the innards are essentially the same between the heavy and light sixer because the FCC class standards hadn't changed yet. They happened by the time of the 2600-a (the woodgrain 4-switch model). The light sixer represents the beginning of cost cutting attempts by scaling down the plastic and changing the controller casing and mechanics as well. (The heavy sixer came with what are CX-10 joysticks, the light sixer onward with CX-40s. You can see the differences here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhoggQ5XYZQ though that CX-10 is missing the hex inlay in the joystick tip that says "Atari" as seen here: http://atariage.com/forums/uploads/post-4982-1128887910.jpg). The heavy sixer is really the cadillac as far as production expense and quality. A lot of details and enhancements that would be eliminated after the launch. (The switchover from heavy sixer to light started in mid '78). --Marty Goldberg (talk) 20:08, 26 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Product photography (part 2)[edit]

A "Red Rafflesia" ring

Okay, I know I need a light tent for something like this. My question is: do you know if a polarizing filter would stop the room from reflecting in the stone? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:05, 27 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Curved, glossy objects can be very difficult to photograph without the reflections. Most of the time, it's a case-by-case basis on how to solve it. I usually employ large reflector boards near the object or stitch together two different photos in Photoshop. A polarizing filter can help, but I've always found them to be annoying and somewhat hard to use when taking product photos. I tried it a couple of times, then fell back onto other methods. Evan-Amos (talk) 18:08, 27 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Stitch together two different versions... what's the difference between the two versions? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:02, 28 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
With reflections, normally you'd build something to block the reflections all around the object, but sometimes you can't because of space or lack of materials. In that case, you can cover half of it, then the other half, then stitch those two photos together in Photoshop. Evan-Amos (talk) 13:33, 22 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Joystick port images[edit]

The editors at VG suggested I ask you directly: would you mind providing some images of the Atari joystick port itself, both the plug on the sticks as well as the port in the console? I'm writing an article on its many uses, including AtariLab, but I cannot find any free-use images. Maury Markowitz (talk) 20:13, 6 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • I took these, which could be suitable if a higher quality replacement cannot be provided by Evan in the short term. Let me know if you want them up on Commons or if you'd rather wait on Evan to provide actual quality pictures (which would be my recommendation). :)  · Salvidrim! ·  15:18, 7 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Milk-Duds-Box-Small.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Milk-Duds-Box-Small.jpg.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 23:29, 31 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The file File:Nilla-Wafers-Box-Small.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The article Nilla has two fair-use images, thereby making one of them redundant.

What do you think of your Wikipedia article?[edit]

I'm sure you already know about the fact that you have your own wikipedia article from one of the comments above, but the question I have is, what do you think of the article? Are there any flaws in the article or stuff that should be added to the article? Tell me what you think. 344917661X (talk) 19:52, 14 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Maltesers-White-Wrapper-Small.jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Maltesers-White-Wrapper-Small.jpg.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.

This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 01:00, 4 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Lighting[edit]

Hello. I was admiring your photographic work and wondering if you would be willing to give me some tips for achieving such even and pleasant lighting. I'm very new to photography, but I'm already quite hooked. I wanted to try my hand at some products and coins and whatnot, so I'd love to know how you make such lovely images. RO(talk) 15:23, 25 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I mostly use "copy lighting" and shoot on glass. It's an easy enough system to replicate, but you do need softboxes and strobe lights. Evan-Amos (talk) 10:38, 27 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
