Follow-up on the "rapid AfD nominations" discussion

You've been very reasonable and incisive in the other AfDs I've seen you in, so I'm hoping you'll take this little detour through sports notability history into consideration: the reason we're seeing so many of these sportsperson noms being made in the first place is due to the changes in NSPORT, which replaced presumption of notability with "SIGCOV is likely to exist" for all sports guidelines, eliminated the NFOOTY guideline entirely (meaning editors can't use criteria like "pro footballer with ongoing career" or any other NFOOTY-based argument at AfD; these criteria were deprecated because they were so poor at predicting GNG), and added a requirement that at least one independent secondary source of SIGCOV be cited in all athlete articles in order for SPORTCRIT or any of the sport-specific criteria to even apply. NSPORT also has always required its subjects meet GNG (which must be demonstrated "eventually"), but before NSPORTS2022 editors could point to meeting sports guidelines as a reason to assume subjects were notable without actually producing proof of GNG from the start. Due to the extremely lax standards in NFOOTY, this led to mass creation of hundreds of thousands of footballer stubs (such that something like one in six Wikipedia biographies is on a footballer; the person who made the plurality of these was topic banned and is now facing further sanctions at Arbcom), most of which do not actually meet GNG. So now that all the presumptions from meeting the former NFOOTY criteria have been removed, and because we know (from hundreds of prior AfDs) that many of the former criteria were especially bad at predicting GNG, footballer articles that don't have a single SIGCOV ref are under a lot of scrutiny. And since there are literally hundreds of thousands of footballer microstubs, they make up a huge proportion of all AfDs.

Another thing to note is that some members of the football project (and other sports projects) vigorously opposed the extremely well-attended global consensuses at the NSPORT RfC, deliberately interfered with its implementation, continued to use the deprecated guidelines at AfD for months despite multiple warnings, even now refuse to acknowledge the requirement that athlete biographies must have a source of SIGCOV, and have resorted to spamming AfDs with non-independent, non-SIGCOV sources claiming GNG is met even though they know it isn't.

Anyway, I'm only saying all this because I was impressed with your conduct at the Teppei AfD and hope you continue participating in sportsperson deletions. We definitely need more editors involved, especially ones who have a robust threshold for what constitutes GNG coverage. JoelleJay (talk) 20:59, 31 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi JoelleJay. First and foremost, thank you for your kind words regarding the other AFDs.

I understand your points entirely and thanks for noting all of this. The problem with this one is I am sat on the fence and part of the reason I gave it a weak keep at the time (as I said, I didn’t explain myself fully at the time). The sourcing at the AFD as you mentioned doesn’t pass the guidelines. However, I’m of the belief that sources could be found on this subject, and before making a concrete decision will make a comment on the AFD asking other users if they can find any/or if they are likely to be found. Of course, we can’t keep articles if the sourcing we have isn’t good enough or because it is likely to be out there.

You’ll definitely still see me at the AFDs in future discussions. I’m just taking a short break from participating in new AFDs and edits on Wikipedia due to the passing of a relative on Saturday night, and have a few thing to sort out. Theatre Royal, Southampton

Thanks @Cielquiparle, that’s good to hear. Unfortunately I will be unable to take a photo for the foreseeable future as one of my relatives was admitted to hospital today (they haven’t been coping well since two weeks ago when my other relative passed).

As much as I would love to help and get the photo as planned, I’m not sure right now is the best time, and I think it may be a good idea to step away from Wikipedia for a short while to ensure they get the help and support that they need.

I didn’t realise how many of these unreferenced stubs about monasteries across England were until I actually started tagging them. It seems like the page creator mass created these unreferenced stubs years ago with the hope that others would expand them. I’m not going to lie, it is a bit frustrating, but it is what it is.

I remember Starzynka - he or she was actually very pleasant to deal with, and monasteries do nearly always turn out to be notable, but obvs that doesn't mean that they can dispense with references. No worries @Wriest, and thank you for your kind words. I’ll add some more stuff if I see anything, and I’ll add some relevant draft categories too.

If you stick at Wikipedia, your definitely find that editing slowly gets easier the more you edit. You will make some mistakes along the way, just like every new user does just like myself, but don’t be disheartened by any of it.

Thanks @Daemonickangaroo2018, hope all is well. Thank you for offering your help, it is much appreciated. Since the season is over and there are no statistics for me to update, I decided to edit Southampton FC related articles that have been tagged or needed improving. The managers have been the most frustrating to edit, especially the older ones. As I don’t have any books on the managers, it is a bit of a challenge for me to edit the further back I go.

One of the managers that I have identified of needing work is Sid Cann. His article currently cites no sources and has a broken Soccerbase link. I am not able to find anything online which isn’t surprising as he played in the 1920s/30s and managed in the 1940s to 1970s. According to the article currently, he left Southampton after falling out with the board and joined the club at some stage as a physio but I am unable to verify any of this.

Another manager that I am struggling with is George Goss who going by the article only managed Southampton. It only has one reference, but given that he only managed the club for one year there might not be a lot out there for him.

Would you be able to help verify some of the content of Cann and Goss? I hope it is not too much of an ask and it would be much appreciated. Kind regards. Fats40boy11 (talk) 17:57, 10 June 2023 (UTC)

Thank you for your comment and I hope all is well. A source is needed in most circumstances, and in this case it is no different.

Although it is not new information necessarily what The Sun did in the past, it is a new angle of a story/discussion that developed only after the recent controversy. The key issue was you didn’t state who it was noted by, and it was a case of by whom was it noted. It may be better to say The Guardian noted instead of it was noted but that is just a suggestion.

Thanks for the kind and to-the-point message, apologies for the belated reply. The only thing i feels needs discussion here is the following: i prefer the current infobox format because it's shorter from an editor point of view, if you want to change data you do so in only a few centimeters, whereas with the other it's needlessly longer/more time-consuming in my humble opinion; i also don't think it's needed to add ALL clubs he managed AND the dates he arrived/departed in the intro (as much as you don't do that for clubs as player, that's what the pertinent career sections are for; and imagine he coaches 50 clubs during his life - he's still young - we surely are not going to add them all to lede, wouldn't you agree?), but since you did not revert my work i was not going to do that to yours, i merely composed it.

Also, regarding the comments about the lead, I updated it as it was slightly outdated. On 23 September, before he was dismissed, there was some content already there about his first two clubs in management. At this moment in time, I'd say it is best to mention all or none of his management jobs in the lead excluding maybe perhaps his first and major roles (this is when it gets subjective however as every job is considered a major job to fans of the respective club) in management. If he does go on to manage 50 clubs throughout his life then I agree it would be a bit much to mention every club, and this would be a discussion to be had – although it is premature to be having this conversation right now since as you mention he is only young.
