Attack on Mers-el-Kebir
[edit]Including whacked out anti-FDR conspiracy theories in your remarks weakens them (rather than strengthening them as you seem to imagine). The US had the ability to decipher Japanese PURPLE diplomatic messages, but that required a convoluted process of deciphering the code into Japanese diplo-speak, and then trying to figure out what Japanese diplo-speak meant in plain language. In any case, the PURPLE messages necessarily contained no operational military details, because the senders of the messages had no access to such. Since the Japanese made no formal ultimatum or declaration of war to the United States before the Pearl Harbor attack, therefore Pearl Harbor is a completely irrelevant red herring to Mers-el-Kebir.
Why don't you blame the real person responsible, Admiral Gensoul? He was obsessed with protocol and etiquette, and who had more gold braid on their shoulders, and wasted much time on irrelevant side-issues and trivialities. In short, he did anything and everything EXCEPT spend much time thinking about the details of the British ultimatum, and deciding what the best French response to it would be...
