"A cappella" is a music style

[edit]

A cappella is a musical style from Italian for "in the style of the chapel". It's not a loanword that takes italics, but it is a term unto itself. So, a is not functioning as an article and should not be removed from the short description of articles about a cappella groups. —C.Fred (talk) 20:53, 13 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Adoption

[edit]

Hi! I saw your adoption profile and am considering being adopted by you. I would like to know how this would work if I did as each person would have their own unique approach. Thanks!

About me:

You'll mostly find me editing Star Wars articles and reverting obvious vandalism, but I really want to contribute more to this community and would be willing to work with any articles/topics you have interest in. I mostly want to be adopted because I am often timid about making edits especially because often I am not sure about the specifics, but it can get really tricky trying to navigate the tons of essays and policies. I hope to gain a better understanding of such policies and rules. Thank you again for your time!

Hi @Ashta Veyla, and welcome to Wikipedia! I totally can identify with editing sometimes being tricky. WikiCup 2023 July newsletter

[edit]

The third round of the 2023 WikiCup has come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round had at least 175 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

Contestants achieved 11 featured articles, 2 featured lists, 47 good articles, 72 featured or good article reviews, over 100 DYKs and 40 ITN appearances. As always, any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 (talk) and Cwmhiraeth (talk). Hello

[edit]

Hello! Sorry i've been innactive recently, I have been busy but i will try to be more active tommorow.

So I was wondering about categorization. The help article about it says that an article shouldn't have too many categories or too broad categories.

   1. It's a bit confusing as all articles have different numbers of categories. Some like fictional characters have many categories, while others like restaurants only have a few. How should I know when to add something and when an article already has enough?
   2. Can you give some examples of categories that are too broad for (article of your choice)? I can easily see good examples of categories on featured articles and stuff, but it would be helpful to see some of the categories that wouldn't work.
   3. Do you think that it's okay that I added 'Fluid Mechanics' to '

Thermal Pressure'?

Thanks! Ashta Veyla (talk) 02:55, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Women in Red 8th Anniversary

[edit]
Women in Red 8th Anniversary
In July 2015 around 15.5% of the English Wikipedia's biographies were about women. As of July 2023, 19.61% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women. That's a lot of biographies created in the effort to close the gender gap. Happy 8th Anniversary! Join us for some virtual cake and add comments or memories and please keep on editing to close the gap!

Could you clarify your close?

[edit]

Hello, I read your close [20] and I could not understand the part on the Code where you said: I will note that participants found the justification for PinkNews being unreliable not compelling, as ... the Universal Code of Conduct, section 3.1 prohibits harassment...refer[ing] to...sexual orientation, gender, [or] sex. Could you clarify that part? How does the Code make PinkNews being unreliable not compelling? Thanks! starship.paint (exalt) 13:25, 14 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Updates

  • Community consultation: The community consultation on the Global Council, Hubs, and the Glossary drafts is ongoing. We value your input, if you have not already, please take a moment to review the draft chapters and share your thoughts with the MCDC. We’ve posed open questions we would like your opinion on. Feel free to engage in a way that is most comfortable for you and your community. Learn more on our Diff blogs about the Global Council and Hubs.
  • Launch Party: On July 30 we hosted a Launch Party to share the Global Council and Hubs draft chapters. It was an inspiring event where we had the opportunity to listen to your feedback and address some of your questions. If you missed it, you can catch the recording on YouTube.
  • Community Conversations: We want to hear from as many people as possible. On July 16, the SWAN meeting opened its doors and offered an opportunity to interact with the MCDC members regarding the new drafts of the charter. Notes are available here. On July 28, a regional conversation with the Francophone community was held. Here comes a short summary here in English and French. Additionally, on August 2 we had a fruitful conversation with the LATAM region.
  • MCDC’s Work in July: As usual, the update includes information about the meetings held by the Committee in this month, as well as about the work that was completed and the ongoing work & discussions.

Question from Jantokiilo (22:47, 31 August 2023)

[edit]

Hello! I have been a long time wikipedia user and advocate and finally decided to start editing.

Quick question: how can I add a reference to a university Infobox?

I saw that the current rector of my university was outdated in the english wikipedia so I updated it but I was unable to add the reference directly in the infobox. Instead, I added it in the universities history. Here is a link to the change I made in case you want to see it: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Costa_Rica_Institute_of_Technology&diff=prev&oldid=1173200474

Thanks! --Jantokiilo (talk) 22:47, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Jantokiilo, welcome to Wikipedia! Here's a helpful guide on how to cite sources. By the way, I've replaced the link to the university's website with one to a news article; usually primary sources are less preferred than secondary ones. Finally, it's discouraged to edit on topics that you may be connected to, like a university you attend; if you must do so, you should disclose your connection. Don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions! Frostly (talk) 00:30, 1 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

[edit]

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

If you're interested in helping out at the GOCE, please consider nominating yourself for our next election in December; it's your WikiProject and it doesn't organize itself!
