Article proposed for deletion

Notice

The article Rainbows End, New Zealand has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Per Wikipedia:Notability_(geographic_features). Settlement is non-notable, does not appear on Google Maps and other common mapping services, article creates confusion with the article for the theme park of the same name

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. @Jgm18: My contributions to the article Southshore, New Zealand have been to add demographics. I have not been to that part of Christchurch. @Schwede66: added much of the material on the 2011 earthquake aftermath, and may be better placed either to update the article or nudge someone else to do so.-gadfium 18:46, 20 June 2022 (UTC)

topic ideas

Hello my name is Brandon Votaw and I’m just curious about how can I make for example North America topic templates without the red links.Votaw1989 (talk) 21:54, 28 June 2022 (UTC)

@Votaw1989: Just write articles on the topic for each country (or at least some of them). That's a lot of work, but the topic template is useless if it has nothing to link to. There is {{World topic}} which takes a parameter of "noredlinks" which might suit you better. However, do not use this if there are no links for it. You also should make sure that any links it finds are relevant. One of the articles you added a topic template to earlier was Christmas in Jamaica. Since there are articles Christmas in America and Christmas in Mexico and a redirect Christmas in Canada you might think a template topic would be appropriate, but the first article is about a song, the second an album by a different artist, and the third article and the redirect are about the way Christmas is celebrated.
You should consider the specialised templates which exist for many topics, which have curated and organised links to related articles. For example, {{Christmas}} contains a list of countries for which we have relevant articles about celebrations. It would be more appropriate to use this template on articles on Christmas celebrations than to use {{World topic}}. I realise you're not necessarily interested in Christmas, I'm just using this as an example.
I suggest there should not be more than one topic template on any article. Such templates can easily overwhelm the actual content in the article
You should also consider why you are adding these templates when the category system does a good job of grouping together articles on similar topics. For example, Christmas in Jamaica is in Category:American Christmas songs, and that has a parent Category:Christmas songs, so with a couple of clicks any interested reader can get to similarly-themed music.-gadfium 22:46, 28 June 2022 (UTC)
Okay random question, is there a way to combine all the Configurable area-topic templates with template:world topic, so that there’s one template to use Votaw1989 (talk) 00:11, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
If you mean to organise the links within world topic by continent, I imagine that would not be too difficult to do, but it might not produce good-looking output for topics which don't have a lot of actual articles. If you mean to add subnational entities such as US states, that would be easy to do but it isn't the purpose of the world topic template. In either case, if you want to pursue the matter, template talk:World topic would be the place to ask.-gadfium 00:52, 2 July 2022 (UTC)

Okay but wouldn’t it be cool to combine all the Configurable area-topic templates into one so that we can use one, it’s just something to think about later Votaw1989 (talk) 23:02, 28 June 2022 (UTC)

UTC+12:00

Hello. I've been looking at contributions by 177.71.45.141 to several articles such as UTC+12:00, which you also edited. I'm unable to confirm or disprove any of the IP's edits. I've reverted the unsourced claims of death in BLPs. I've left the other changes for now (mainly timezones) but they might deserve a closer look by someone with a clue. Pinging DB1729, whose edit summary suggests that the IP might be a blocked editor. Certes (talk) 19:46, 21 July 2022 (UTC)

@Certes: This appears to be one of a series of IP addresses making vandalistic changes connected with time zone information. It isn't always easy to determine if the edits are valid or not, but the pattern and lack of explanation justifies a block on sight. In the case of their recent edits to UTC+12:00, their edit summary claim "New Zealand do not currently use daylight saving time" is at best misleading. NZ does use daylight saving, but naturally it uses it during summer, and it is currently winter in the southern hemisphere.-gadfium 19:53, 21 July 2022 (UTC)
@Certes: I think my edit summary you're talking about is from this diff. It was actually in reference to a range block to 2804:D45:9658:6800:60B4:BC81:65BC:EF5 (talk · contribs). Hopefully looking at the edit history of the article is more clear now. --DB1729 (talk) 22:53, 21 July 2022 (UTC)

Dear Gadfium,

I am writing to you because I have realized that you requested the cancellation of Gianpiero Fiorani's page due to inaccurate information.

However, that request was denied. Please, I would ask you to send it again, due to what I indicate below:

Dear Wikipedia Team, I request the removal of this Wikipedia page, since point 1 speaks of a negative episode that Mr. Fiorani experienced more than 17 years ago, an episode that has now been overcome, in which he was able to prove his innocence by being acquitted by the Italian justice system. I add 2 links where you can check what I say: https://www.blitzquotidiano.it/cronaca-italia/molise-usura-bancaria-gianpiero-fiorani-assolto-1234056/ https://www.primopianomolise.it/cronaca/giudiziaria/6309/usura-bancaria-assolto-fiorani/ Taking into account technological progress and respect for the constitutional rights of citizens, this request is made by appealing to the Right to be Forgotten (article 17 of the RGPD), which has long been recognized by European and Italian jurisprudence as “The right not to be exposed indefinitely to the subsequent damages that the repeated publication of a news item may cause to honor and reputation, unless, due to events that have occurred, the previous event becomes current and revives a new public interest in information.” In the case of Mr. Fiorani, what happened more than 17 years ago has not generated public interest again. Furthermore, Mr. Fiorani has proven his innocence in the Italian courts, for this reason, this request is also based on the Cartabia reform. The new Cartabia Reform (law 134/2021), approved on June 17, 2022, must be taken into consideration. Which has definitively provided for in article 1, paragraph 25 the right to de-index to citizens who have undergone a judicial proceeding and have obtained acquittal or to suspects who have obtained a decree of dismissal, a sentence of no place to proceed or of acquittal . Mr. Fiorani is not a public figure, it is disproportionate to create an entire Wikipedia page with only negative information. In addition, the two references that are named in the article are already deindexed by the original source, accepting our request for the Right to be Forgotten. It is an obsolete topic, due to the amount of time that has elapsed (more than 17 years) since the news emerged. It is important to remember that the presence of judicial news or this type of information on the Internet can represent an obstacle to the social reintegration of a person, and that the right to be forgotten should also be recognized for those who have been rehabilitated after a sentence, all the more so for a person who has proven his innocence. To finish, I would like to emphasize that, according to the Wikipedia classification, this page has low importance in the Financial Crime ranking. I remain at your disposal for any additional information and/or integration that you consider necessary for the acceptance of this request. Waiting for your response.

I believe that Wikipedia must keep updated and accurate information and, above all, be in accordance with the laws and rights that citizens have, which go beyond any desire to disseminate or maintain inaccurate content. Wikipedia must be a safe site, where the information that is disseminated is really accurate.

Best regards, Nathalia Nathalia Rodríguez R (talk) 14:48, 5 August 2022 (UTC)

Nude beach

Hello dear Gadfium You deleted my text about nude beach location, becouse in unsourced, you wrote. I add one source - beachsearcher.com (https://beachsearcher.com/en/search?object=world&object_id=1&camp_nude=1&pagesize=18&offset=0) If you see that page you can see that there are all nude beaches of Europe there and I think it is an authoritative resource to trust. Thank's for your feedback. Kentavr009 (talk) 06:01, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

I'm not sure that would qualify as a reliable source. You can ask at the reliable sources noticeboard whether a source can be considered reliable. It certainly doesn't support the rest of the paragraph you added. You also added it as an embedded external link, not as a reference.-gadfium 06:22, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

User Votaw1989 and their edits

Kia ora Gadfium, I see you have had interactions with this user before and questioned them about their editing and using the World topic template. It doesn't seem like they get it and they are doing it still with a weird type of editing where they also turn it into a red link. Hoping since you are both an Administrator and dealt with them before, you could help out again please?— NZFC(talk)(cont) 00:08, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

And its all good, Schwede66 has picked them up in the meantime and blocked the user. Thank you.— NZFC(talk)(cont) 00:33, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
I was typing a reply when your second message came through. The gist of my reply was that I had attempted to improve their editing with insufficient results and I would like some other admin to take over so it didn't look like I was picking on them, since they are clearly well-meaning. I'm happy with Schwede66's response.-gadfium 00:41, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
True actually that makes sense and should have considered that as well, thanks for your time.— NZFC(talk)(cont) 00:45, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

dual names 🙄

Kia ora, I notice that the Clutha River / Mata-Au page has been changed back to Clutha River only 8 months after consensus was reached for it to be Clutha / Mata-Au. Is there a policy somewhere about how long is acceptable between page renames? Feels quite edit-warry and I'm tempted to revert the most recent name change on the basis of them needing to wait a year before reopening the name discussion. But I can't find that policy on the help pages! I think I've come across it somewhere and thought you might know :) but if it's just wishful thinking on my part do let me know.

Cheers TreeReader (talk) 05:11, 8 November 2022 (UTC)

A new requested move found a new consensus. There isn't any policy saying that there has to be a fixed time between move requests, although if a new request was made very soon after a previous one, I think some people would argue the new request should be rejected because it's "too soon". For articles which have a long history of requested moves, sometimes a moratorium on moves is requested for a fixed term; I think such a moratorium is requested at the same time as a requested move. Such a moritorium has no binding force, but makes it more likely that a requested move within its stated time will be rejected.-gadfium 05:27, 8 November 2022 (UTC)

Houhora River

Kia ora Gadfium - I've just been going through and tidying up the NZ river categories on Commons, and came across this one with some images that you took a while back. I haven't been able to find anything about a river of this name, so I was hoping you might be able to point me in the right direction for where the photos were taken if you can recall? I figured it might have been one of the rivers around the Houhora Harbour, but there are quite a few so didn't want to be presumptuous. Turnagra (talk) 02:24, 3 January 2023 (UTC)

I've consulted someone who mucked about on the harbour as a teenager, and who was with me when I took the photos. I wonder if you could take a look at this page: Murders of Ben Smart and Olivia Hope. One particular editor, Stumpy2121, is editing the page as if he owns it. See these comments on the Talk page. If you look at the History page, you see he has made hundreds of edits and contests every single edit that I try to make. For the most part he does not allow anyone else's edits to stand.

On 3 January, he made about 100 edits and then tried to suggest this [page needs to be locked]. He clearly wants to be the only person allowed to edit the page. Dubiousources (talk) 20:27, 6 January 2023 (UTC)

@Dubiousources and Stumpy2121:I am aware of the edits, and the discussion on the talk page. It looks like the normal process of working out how best to present the details on a controversial topic. However, I do see times when each of you have referred to the other's edits as "vandalism", and that is not an appropriate way of saying you disagree with them. Please try to work together collegiately.-gadfium 21:32, 6 January 2023 (UTC)
I think you've missed the point. He reverts virtually every edit I have made. I do not regard that as a 'normal process'. Dubiousources (talk) 00:10, 7 January 2023 (UTC)
I reversed your edit where you deleted a subsection from the article. Before doing so i engaged you on the talk page and asked why it was deleted. You replied that mentioning that a man accused of murdering people on his boat painted said boat days after the alleged incident was not "cogent" and police speculation. I provided you with a reliable source showing that the suspect does not deny painting the boat and that this issue was raised at trial. After you did not reply i reverted your deletion. If you feel this is incorrect i encourage you to reengage in our discussion on the talk page.
Checking the history of the page you can see i have reverted very few of your edits, even going out of my way to expand on information you have added (see section on Gerald) or going through the article with a fine tooth comb to change the way "the mystery man" was referred to so that the article was in line with your suggestion.
