Speedy deletion nomination of E.W. Beth Dissertation Prize[edit]

A tag has been placed on E.W. Beth Dissertation Prize requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. Re: the deletion[edit]

I want to share with you what I posted on the talk page of E.W. Beth Dissertation Prize, which you cannot see, because it has been deleted.

I said:

This is a close call. On the one hand, it is clear that almost all the content is a pure copy paste from the source. On the other hand, it is established that a list of facts cannot be copyrighted. However, given the names of the winners and year, there are various ways the material could be formatted, and this article chose a virtually identical format (the only exception being the existence of bullets). The remaining material, other than the list is a simple three sentence description of the prize. In my view this is not acceptable.

I'm too late to be the first to welcome you to Wikipedia, so let me be the second.

We take copyright very seriously at Wikipedia.

We never, ever consider whether it is likely that someone would complain. To take an extreme example, almost every day an owner of a company copies material form the company website into an article. They obviously aren't planning on complaining, yet we remove it on copyright grounds. Copied material can be included in narrow circumstances, such as public domain (but even then it must be properly attributed) and pure factual lists. No one can copyright a list of the planets. Your situation was close to acceptable, as it was mostly a list of the award winners. However, by copying the structure, you may have done a bit too far. It would be better if you were to list the in a table, or simply one after another in a simple list.

We do have a provision for restoring deleted articles to user space, but it has one major exception, and that relates to copyright issues. We do not want copyright material even in drafts, because the history can be viewed by anyone. It is not good practice to start with material form another source and make edits to it, but if you must, and this does make sense with a list, it should be done in an external editor.

I thought maybe the opening paragraph was fine, but it appears to be copied from sites such as this, so I don't believe there is any useful text from the original article to salvage.

Identify several sources, and make sure you write it in your own words.

An article that explains how the prize came to be awarded, a little bit about E.W. Beth, who the people are that select the prize winners, etc, followed by a list of recipients would be a decent article, if supported by Wikipedia:Identifying reliable sources--SPhilbrick (Talk) 18:28, 29 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. I tagged the EACSL page as needing more independent sources: you have to show that a Wikipedia topic has had substantial coverage in multiple independent sources, or else its notability is in question.

Wow, I just saw how the auto-text from the curation tool clashed with my comment. I've fixed it above. Anyway, the page isn't currently tagged for deletion, just improvement.
