Flag of Wales

What happened was, I couldn't save .svg file, so I saved it as .png file, but the original remains as .svg on commons, so we should delete the png file. :-D --BorgQueen (talk) 14:28, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

Btw, are you going to do the credits, or would you like me to do it? --BorgQueen (talk) 14:30, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
Nevermind, I am doing it. --BorgQueen (talk) 14:37, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
Oh ok, I've done the article talk page part, you are welcome to do the user talk page notifications. --BorgQueen (talk) 14:40, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi, sorry

It was a mistake, didn't even realize I'd done it...--G-Dett (talk) 03:01, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Boo

I created HMS Little Belt (1807). I don't get a DYK? :( -- Kendrick7talk 03:34, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Uh huh. I stub stuff out all the time, and I took immediate note that User:Benea performed awesomely,[1] but I think I'm due a little credit here, as a muse, nevertheless. -- Kendrick7talk 03:49, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
Thank you! -- Kendrick7talk 04:10, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Nine hooks?

Isn't it a bit too long? We don't have much backlog at the moment, which makes me wonder if such a long update is necessary, at the cost of main page balance. --BorgQueen (talk) 06:44, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Groan. So be it... --BorgQueen (talk) 06:52, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
If it's of any interest, it's two too many for balance on my browser! BencherliteTalk 06:58, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
That is just too bizarre. A few days ago Borgqueen was telling me my updates were too short! Gatoclass (talk) 07:01, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
Tsk, Gatoclass, you just can't do anything right, can you? Give that mop back immediately! BencherliteTalk 07:03, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
No way! I just started enjoying it :p Gatoclass (talk) 07:05, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Best of Wikipedia?

You mentioned somewhere that you thought I saw DYK as "the best of Wikipedia," however, just to be clear, someone else said that. I have a pretty good idea what DYK is featuring, and it's not the "best," simply well-written and recently written articles with good references. --Blechnic (talk) 03:45, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

Notifications

A newbie updater apparently cleared the next update page without having done the notification job for the current DYK update. I've finished the {{dyktalk|3 July|2008}} thing, can you do the user talk page part? Thanks. --BorgQueen (talk) 06:23, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

Proposal discussion resumed

Hi.

I'm contacting you because you were involved in the discussion concerning the renaming of the lists of basic topics.

I ran into resistance when I attempted to rename the set.

Therefore, the name change hasn't been completed, because the previous discussion wasn't widespread enough, nor announced in enough places.

I've submitted a new proposal at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#Proposal to rename the pages called List of basic x topics to Topic outline of x.

RE:Credits

Thanks for reminding me of that :), that was my first time in adding any hooks to the next update list and unfortunately I forgot to add the credits of the creators/nominators :(. Anyways thanks for the reminder of forgetting to add the credits to the bottom of the template :). Thanks and All the Best, --Mifter (talk) 03:32, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the DYK notification / New article Children of Joseph Smith, Jr.

Gatoclass, thank you for the DYK notification for the 1831 polygamy revelation of 2008-06-23. You may be interested to see that this article has been merged with the article 1843 polygamy revelation into a new Origin of Latter Day Saint polygamy, which is shaping up to be an interesting and informative read through the hard work of several editors (mostly Descartes1979). You may also be very interested to read the newly created article Children of Joseph Smith, Jr. and some of the not-very-widely known but verifiable facts from reliable sources presented in this article, especially in the final section. Next update

I am sure the next update will be all yours, if you'll be still online. --BorgQueen (talk) 06:35, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

Ok that's understandable. We all go through such times at some point of our wiki career... --BorgQueen (talk) 06:57, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

help?

Hi GC ... I'm confused. Charles Matthews and I have a DYK double nom dated the 4th (for Edward Oldcorne and Hindlip Hall) which has an X against it. The reason given is that the ref is a blog. There IS a blog as a ref, but I added another ref that wasnt a blog to prove it was reliable fact.

However I can't get someone to either remove the X or explain where I am going wrong. Could you help? Victuallers (talk) 20:34, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for looking GC, I see that the single nom is going to main page now. However I checked the ref number 9 and it doesnt go to a main page? Halfway down it lists "Edward Oldcornes eye". Still thanks again. Luckily I have a hook for the missing article and I will paste the ref right by the hook! Thanks again for your help ... I do appreciate it. Victuallers (talk) 07:32, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

The traditional rfa thank you message

Thank you for the support!
Gatoclass, it is my honor to report that thanks in part to your support my third request for adminship passed (80/18/2). I appreciate the trust you and the WP community have in me, and I will endeovour to put my newly acquired mop and bucket to work for the community as a whole. Yours sincerly and respectfuly, TomStar81 (Talk) 03:22, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

DYK updating

Yes, sorry, I forgot to go back and delete the image! I don't think I've done that which is bad, so I'll bear that in mind. And as for the additions to WP:DYKA, it says at T:DYK/N that you should copy the hooks into the template and DYKA at the same time. Either that needs to be changed or I'm misreading it! Apologies; I've not really worked in DYK before, but I noticed BorgQueen was in need of a hand while on a break so I thought I'd help out. I'll take note of what you've said and will be more careful. Thanks again, PeterSymonds (talk) 11:41, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

Barnstar of Diligence

The Barnstar of Diligence
Congratulations, Gatoclass! You've just become the second person ever to have made 2000+ edits at Template:Did you know/Next update. That's more than 10% of all edits made on the template since it was created in 2006. This Barnstar of Diligence is awarded to you on this special occasion in appreciation of your fine contributions to Wikipedia, particularly your hard work at DYK. Happy editing! PFHLai (talk) 03:56, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

P.S. You have also taken over the top spot for making the most edits at Template talk:Did you know since 03/03/2007. You can check your stats here. Cheers! --PFHLai (talk) 03:56, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

You're welcome, Gatoclass. I hope your wikiburnout goes away soon. Take a break and go outside when the weather is nice. Take a few pictures for Wikimedia Commons. Take it easy and you'll feel better. Take care. --PFHLai (talk) 14:58, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Next update

Almost. I see room for one more line but if such a short entry is not available we'd probably better leave it as it is. --BorgQueen (talk) 07:46, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Same as before. One empty line but nevermind. --BorgQueen (talk) 13:14, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
Oh you mean the current "next update" page - I see enough room for one more hook. --BorgQueen (talk) 13:18, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
Now it is perfect. --BorgQueen (talk) 13:21, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Mizuna

Thanks for the DYK notice about the mizuna article. I know there are free use pics available on Flickr (I found some) but don't know the best code to use for them (I only know the code to release photos I created myself). Do you happen to know? It would be cool to add a picture a.s.a.p. since it's on the main page. - House of Scandal (talk) 02:56, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

DYK credit

Thank you for the Podgórski sisters. Much appreciated. The new title makes a lot of sense. I made a small revision to the article's opening paragraph to reflect what you wrote. Cheers, Poeticbent talk 03:19, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

No problemo, I just gave the intro a little tweak myself :)
I liked the article and would have put it in top spot but I thought the picture was a bit misleading (it wasn't actually a picture of their house as the hook seemed to indicate). So I put it in second spot instead :) Gatoclass (talk) 03:24, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
  • I'm glad you liked the article, and thanks for the positive feedback. Your own copyedit looks good too. Till next time, Poeticbent talk 03:37, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Re: DYK Credits

Thanks for letting me know about that! I'm slowly getting the hang of it... one of these days, I'll actually have all the things done properly. :) But no, seriously, thanks. Being sort of new to this, I figured I'd ask, but do you think anyone would mind if I added a few bits of information to Template:Did_you_know/Next_update#After_posting_the_new_update? I've now learned a couple other things that also need to be done after the update, but aren't on that list (and it might at least help for those just getting acquainted with updating DYK). -- Natalya 10:01, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Just the bit about crediting the article creators/nominators and the associated talk pages. Although I may just be being dense about it, though there is the whole section about credits and the credit templates, it never actually says that notifying everyone is something to be done when an update goes through. Though... perhaps a more observant editor would assume that since all the templates are listed there, they should actually be used... :) Either way is okay - just looking to be helpful. I definitly understand not being overwhelming, though. -- Natalya 10:08, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
Okay. You certainly know more about it than me! You and the other seasoned DKY folks have been kind enough to let me know where I've forgotten things, so I'm sure if anyone else misses it, they'll also learn. -- Natalya 10:14, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
You haven't asked me at a convenient time as I'm in the middle of preparing an update. I probably need more time to think about it, so I'll try to take a look at the structure later and give you a more considered opinion. Gatoclass (talk) 10:17, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for considering it (and, though it certainly wasn't purposeful, my apologies for catching you at a busy time). The way you've put it is very polite, and doesn't seem very overwhelming, which should hopefully still be good for those new to updates. -- Natalya 10:48, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

DYK Metal

Thanks for tinkering with Pteridomania. Let me know when you reach the 100 DYK mark! - House of Scandal (talk) 15:01, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Credits

I was wondering if you could do the credits? --BorgQueen (talk) 03:30, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

I guess you are offline. Okay, I will do it then. --BorgQueen (talk) 03:38, 12 July 2008 (UTC)
Yes, it is too long by two lines on my screen. But I think it is tolerable... --BorgQueen (talk) 10:20, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

Dyk participation

I've never really become involved in the DYK aspect of Wikipedia; I've only got a few DYKs myself, but I do wish to now. I know about archiving those that have been selected from the nominations page, choosing appropriate images, notifying authors etc. but for one thing in particular, I'm a little unknowledgeable about. For the image that is going to be displayed, do you delete the image, protect it and apply the relevant template message about "admins only editing" etc? Thanks in advance. Rudget (logs) 10:17, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

That does help. I asked yourself since you seem to be one of the biggest contributors, in which case you would have expanded on the instructions. Which you have. :) Thank you. Rudget (logs) 10:29, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

DYK

An editor listed a July 4th DYK nomination in the expired noms[2]. Apparently, the Iraiyanar Akapporul DYK request got deleted without being considered, probably because it was at the very bottom of the suggestions. I just came across his note on my talk page.[3] It looks like a lot of effort went into the article. Any chance on adding it to the Template:Did you know/Next update? Thanks. (I also posted a note on BorgQueen's page) GregManninLB (talk) 23:58, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

Thank you

I want to thank you for all the time you are putting into DYK. As an author of some of those DYKs, I really appreciate it. - Epousesquecido (talk) 03:51, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Good choice

I was going to use that skull picture but I will let you instead. :-D --BorgQueen (talk) 07:52, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

This time you probably won't need eight hooks. We can remove one entry from ITN when we update, since it is kinda longer than usual anyway. --BorgQueen (talk) 07:59, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
Actually, you might want to use one more. --BorgQueen (talk) 09:03, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
I've updated but can you do the credits? I have to go out now... Thanks. --BorgQueen (talk) 09:36, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi, about a DYK.

Hi, I'm not sure if you missed it or didn't get around to it yet, but could you have a look at this?. I think you might have missed something. Steve Crossin (contact) 09:57, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Levy-Neafie House

It may be a contributing property to the Cape May Historic District and thus not listed in its own right. A lot of places say things like that when promoting themselves. Daniel Case (talk) 10:22, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Pine Hill and Bourne vs. Barnstable

Don't know if it was you who changed the wording of my latest hook but, in doing so, the town was replaced with the county, creating an error (Barnstable County and Cape Cod are pretty much coterminous; but the town of Bourne, where Pine Hill is, is not the town of Barnstable. I fixed it. Daniel Case (talk) 17:07, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Regarding the DYK belated nomination, the hook is cited now the the primary author. Thanks Taprobanus (talk) 13:52, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Quick DYK Comment about the newest updae

I saw you've got an under construction box on top of the next DYK template, so I didn't want to edit it myself, but I was wondering if you'd consider removing the word journeyman from the Mike Cervenak so it would read simply "... that infielder Mike Cervenak spent so much time as a member of the Norwich Navigators that the residents of the town dubbed him the "Mayor of Norwich"?" Journeyman's a pretty pejorative term, and it seems like some unnecessary editorializing to put on the front page. It was discussed on the template talk but never changed. Especially with a living person involved, I think it's better not to insult. Vickser (talk) 16:24, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Comment Copied from User talk:Vickser Oh yeah, sorry, I meant to do that myself, but I'm in such a hurry right now, as it's way past my bedtime I must have forgotten. Hang on a sec, I'll get rid of that now. Gatoclass (talk) 16:26, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
Thank you! And by the way, thank you for taking care of the next updates so often. It seems like you've been one of the administrators who are really on top of it, and as new DYK addict, you get a ton of my gratitude. Thanks for keeping the updates coming, and I'll see you around! Vickser (talk) 16:33, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Mimagoniates microlepis

Hola, Gato. I think you may have dropped Croaking Tetra from the DYK next update accidentally rather than purposely so I'm just letting you know it was dropped. Peace. - 16:40, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Late DYK Edits

I'm new to DYK, but I'm troubled that after five days of review a hook that ended up looking like this:

was edited by you down to:

Shouldn't these edits have been made before the hook was accepted so they could be reviewed and commented on? -Dankirkd (talk) 21:22, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

The article had cited sources that referenced the 50 plus number in the Endorsers section (last sentence). The home of the document also has an exhaustive list of endorsees. I really feel your edits shortchanged the effectiveness of the hook, and again, were made at a time when no one could challenge the edit. I also don't see anything in the rules that indicate that once the hooks pass the 5 day approval period they undergo further final edits like the kind you made. Finally, where did you leave me a message, I can't find anything message from you? -Dankirkd (talk) 02:52, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
Furthermore, the other edit to remove "U.S. Congress" also seems strange to me. I wasn't under the impression this was a U.S.-centric wiki, so just having "congressional candidates" may not be clear to many non-U.S. readers. I also see you made edits to other hooks that created problems. My assumption is that only certain admins can edit the DYK template once they've been published, but I probably should have reverted the changes you made to the hook when I saw them to how they were when they were transferred to Next Update page the from the Suggestions page. I guess that's my bad then. -Dankirkd (talk) 03:08, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

Knock knock

If you are online, can you take care of the next update? Thanks. --BorgQueen (talk) 06:16, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

You need one more hook. --BorgQueen (talk) 09:04, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
Yes, it looks perfect now. :-) Sorry I was away. --BorgQueen (talk) 12:55, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

DYK updating

Hello Gatoclass. I was wondering, did I move a hook to the next update page correctly? The diffs are here and here. It's my first time. I do a lot of reviewing DYKs (not recently though) and I suppose I can help with moving hooks to the next update.-- RyRy (talk) 07:42, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Oh, that's right. I edit-conflicted with Borgqueen when I added the credit the first time. When I tried the second time, I guess I forgot to add the credit. :/ Anyway, the credit for that was Bedford (talk · contribs) making a five-fold expansion. Besides that, I did okay, right? -- RyRy (talk) 07:51, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Actually: because you put on the inuse tag, I have to put this on your talk page. RyRy did not transfer the credits when he promoted the GRC NHP hook. The Credits are that I get the creator credit for BRC NHP, Wetman gets creator credit for Hirons, for which I get the nominator credit.--Bedford Pray 08:25, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi Gatoclass. You can finish adding hooks to the next update. Thanks, RyRy (talk) 05:28, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
Are you sure about the fish image? I am sure there are better ones on the suggestions page. --BorgQueen (talk) 07:09, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
Perhaps we could use the one about a mosque. Obviously we need to push one hook to the holding bay to include another hook though. --BorgQueen (talk) 07:15, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, Borgqueen, that'll do. Go ahead. I can't do that currently. -- RyRy (talk) 07:25, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
Neither can I, I have to go out soon... Let's just leave it... --BorgQueen (talk) 07:29, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

<-- Okay, I finished the next update. Feel free to tweak and shuffle. I decided to use a tornado as the picture for this one instead. I don't think I've seen that for a while. -- RyRy (talk) 08:30, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Oh, I'm very sorry about that. But thanks for the advice, I'll try to avoid that next time. That would really help. I'm sure you were like me when you first started adding hooks to the next update. What should we do know? Leave it, or make some switches. TBH, I don't think there is any way to switch them since when we move hooks to the next update, we delete the suggestions at Template talk:DYK... -- RyRy (talk) 08:38, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
I would, but I just don't have as much DYK experience as you. I would try myself, but I'm tired as it is. I'll get the hang of DYK updating (hopefully) soon, probably just by watching Borgqueen and you (since you two are the most active in this area I believe). -- RyRy (talk) 08:50, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

shrinking hook?

  • Unless I'm mistaken, Detached object (astronomy) seems to be substantially shorter than its form on the talk of DYK... I'm a little in the dark here; is it standard practice for one editor to just cut as he/she will? Ling.Nut (WP:3IAR) 11:49, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
  • You put your response on the talk page of an essay; with your permission, I'll move it to my User talk page. :-) But... I dunno, the whole idea of DYK editors just unilaterally changing stuff in in an opaque manner (that's the key point) seem very un-Wikipedia. I'm not saying changing stuff is un-wiki; I'm saying that transferring text from one page to another and changing it en route is opaque and very un-wiki. It makes one editor the sole editor; smacks of WP:OWN... but I don't have the time or the energy to fight the screaming hordes of DYK folks who will undoubtedly defend this practice to the death... so just leave it in its current decimated state.. whatever... :/
  • Is there anything in the rules of DYK that allows this one-editor editing? I didn't see it, but that doesn't mean it's not there... If not, then it needs to be prominently featured Ling.Nut (WP:3IAR) 12:11, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Notice regarding two separate issues (one an MfD)

Hi,

  • Two issues, one more important (an WP:MFD).
  • I hope you will realize I'm not mad at all about the DYK hook thing; I just think it's Bad Form. I have seen your line of reasoning that DYK is just massively understaffed, and i accept that in the real world we just can't always follow the rules perfectly. I clearly see the reasons for the DYK copy/paste editing. I still strongly disagree, but on principle, rather than from a personal or emotional POV. Relevant disussion here; the only reply has been from Father Goose, who seems to always disagree with me.
  • Far more importantly, I'm notifying you that I have MFD'd List of battles and other violent events by death toll. I see you created the page. Yes, MfD is a drastic step.. but... the whole darn thing is just unsubstantiated. I very very very strongly suggest doing the responsible thing (and the thing that is best for the encyclopedia) by moving this page to your user space and dedicating time to bringing it up to at least some minimum level of verifiability. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not Geocities. Ling.Nut (WP:3IAR) 02:59, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Random wikismile

Hello. Just thought I would drop you a wikismile. No reason. Just saw you around and felt like it. Keep up the good work. Okiefromokla questions? 03:37, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

page move

Hi, I saw User:Gatoclass/List of battles. When i was talking about userfying, I didn't mean copy/paste, I meant do a page move on the MfD'd list, moving it out of mainspace and into userpsace... then verify the facts... then move it back into mainspace.... sorry if I wasn't clear...Ling.Nut (WP:3IAR) 05:18, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

... but i don't think you should do a page move 'til the MfD is closed... it's kinda inconvenient, but... Ling.Nut (WP:3IAR) 05:19, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
Okay. I am not terribly familiar with "userfying", so it didn't occur to me to move the page. I'm happy to leave the move until the MFD is closed. Gatoclass (talk) 05:22, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Neafie & Levy 85/2

Updated DYK query On 20 July, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Neafie & Levy, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

--BorgQueen (talk) 17:10, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

Perhaps worth another look

You removed two noms of mine here, with the edit summary "that one was already submitted and rejected some days ago". I would point out that the reason the second DYK was rejected because the article had not been expanded 5-fold. The first one, about tornado activity, had never been submitted before. The reason they were both submitted under the 18th was that the article had been suitably expanded enough to permit submission. Might I trouble you to revert yourself rather quickly, so that these DYK's can still be evaluated? - Hexhand (talk) 15:02, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

My apologies. I would point out that at the time of the first DYK nom, the article had not had 5x expansion. Since that time, the article has been expanded 5x, which has been confirmed by two others (see my talk). Thus, I re-submitted the earlier nom and added a second one (which had not been submitted before). - Hexhand (talk) 15:11, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
No worries - take your time. I've reverted the removal (noting the existence of the earlier nom), so that way, if an evaluator comes along in the meantime, they can do the tagging. It wasn't meant as a slap, but to make use of the limited time window in DYK. - Hexhand (talk) 15:20, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

Problem

I am facing a strange technical problem in the article Anti-tobacco movement in Nazi Germany. The article uses Harvard referencing. All of it works. For example, if you click this, you will automatically go to the last book in the reference section. But if you click this reference, by rule you should go to the second book in the reference section. But this is not happening. Can you tell what is the problem here. Is there any technical problem, I cannot understand. BTW I understand your concern regarding the effectiveness section, but I have added the explanation by Proctor, yes lack of tobacco ration may be a catalytic factor. Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 04:52, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

The problem is occurring with cite number 5. Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 05:00, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
If it properly works in your computer, then it may be problem with my browser. Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 05:09, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

Ok, now im online. --BorgQueen (talk) 05:17, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

No, OTD usually needs five, today one entry is extraordinarily long so four seems right. ITN actually only needs five too, so I removed another hook just now, and made their image 100x100px, and it shortened their length noticeably. You might want to use these tricks next time. :-D --BorgQueen (talk) 05:28, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

DYK archives

Are you updating the archives with a script? Some time ago I started working on such a script but didn't get it finished. Just wondering if someone else took over the task. Gimmetrow 20:41, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

email Yankee (ferry) documents

I visit ur userpage to see if you have email enabled, as i would be happy to simply email you the documents where the 8,000,000 figure is mentioned, per Talk:Yankee (ferry). Email is enabled at my User page; if you contact me by that i will be happy to send PDFs of those documents by return email. Of course you may already be reading the documents, as access should be possible at least for some browser/operating system combinations. doncram (talk) 15:23, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Per your comments, the 8,000,000 figure is not reliable then and shouldn't be used. It appears, however, in the letter in support of the nomination that is page 13 out of 14 pages, in the 3rd separate PDF file that is part of the one combined reference (text in one 15 page PDF; photos in a 4 page PDF; correspondence in the 3rd PDF). The letter is merely from a Councilwoman Kathryn Freed and is probably not a suitable source, especially for a factoid that seems countered by other reasoning. I'm glad you seem to be able to read the PDFs from the reference in the article, as I think you are under the mistaken impression that i could email them to you; i don't have your email address and I believe that you don't have email receipt enabled at your userpage. No need i guess. doncram (talk) 04:35, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

DYK update

Sorry, I didn't notice the {{inuse}} tag on the next update, and I think I added a hook shortly after you posted. My apologies if this caused problems. Best, PeterSymonds (talk)

I am really sorry, please carry on, I didn't mean to do it. I just didn't notice the tag, and I came straight here after I realised. My apologies again. PeterSymonds (talk) 13:57, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
No worries, I'm sorry to hear things are not all well. I went out shortly after your message so I couldn't continue the update. Looks like you've finished it. :) Thanks, PeterSymonds (talk) 16:39, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Bryson

I have left a note on the DYK suggestions page about the hook re use of The Bryson in "The Grifters." Separate from IMDB, the article now has three other cites for the use of the building in the film. If you have a moment to take another look, that would be great.Cbl62 (talk) 15:14, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Too short?

I am not sure what you are considering to be too short, the article (at 34kb), or the DYK (at 24 words and 128 characters)? - Hexhand (talk) 19:42, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Please take another look, as the article, Contaminated currency has since been expanded considerably? Might it have been expanded sufficiently for you to reconsider your evaluation of the DYK nom? - Hexhand (talk) 00:24, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
If you cannot take the time to actually look at an accusation, might it be more intelligent to actually take that time or withhold snap judgments which damage my name, please?"Caught in a copyvio" seems pretty harsh. - Hexhand (talk) 14:55, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
That seems unnecessary. There isn't any copyvio. Period. - Hexhand (talk) 15:12, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
Okay, I've rewritten those parts of the article wherein the editor cried copyvio, and provided at least a dozen other links to the subject. If you get a chance, could you take another look? - Hexhand (talk) 16:57, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

It is currently being featured on DYK. --BorgQueen (talk) 15:19, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

DYK problem editor

I have asked that the Mesodermochelys article be removed from candidates for DYK.[4] I also think the editor should be banned for some time from DYK until she reconsiders her actions, due to the nature of her edits, having already been accused of plagiarizing, and now purposefully reverting substantive edits to make the edit count for DYK to obtain her count award, and doing this while using personal attacks in edit summaries. See the DYK link for links to further details. I posted this on a couple of user pages, but it should be discussed at DYK or AN/I.[5] --Blechnic (talk) 04:43, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

I'm fine with however it is handled as long as the article is not promoted loaded with an edit history full of lame edits and personal attacks made solely to increase an edit count rather than to write an article. Most of her extinct animal articles that have content above a sentence are inaccurate and need edited. Although I can read the technical literature well enough to see and usually correct her inaccuracies, like her, I'm not a vertebrate paleontologist. --Blechnic (talk) 05:32, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Update pic

Borgqueen, do you think it would be okay to put my own article in the top spot? I don't think a flag is a good enough lead pic, and we haven't had a ship lead (let alone a commercial ship) for ages. What do you think? Gatoclass (talk) 05:05, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

I put the flag there because I thought we wanted something different, and it is colorful. Plus, no one can claim Americentricism with it.--Bedford Pray 05:06, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
If the article was about the flag itself, I wouldn't have a problem. But it's just about something that happened in that particular country. We could do the same when we were short of pics for any country, but I think it would look pretty silly if, for example, we put the flag of Britain up there for an article which happened to be about Britain. Gatoclass (talk) 05:10, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
Fair enough.--Bedford Pray 05:14, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Excuse me...

When you deleted this nom, noting that it had already been listed elsewhere, you were incorrect. The nom on the 23rd a different DYK from the article. I would ask you to revert your removal, please. - Hexhand (talk) 14:13, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Again, the article has undergone significant revision since then. Please tell me you looked beyond the comments Iaian posted on my page. Feel free to point out where any current copyvios exist, pls - Hexhand (talk) 16:18, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
Like I said, could you point out any of this "closeness" you refer to? - Hexhand (talk) 18:06, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
As well, I have reverted your removal of the DYK about the destruction of British currency. It is a separate DYK, and you removed it under the pretense that it was the same as the earlier nomination. - Hexhand (talk) 18:16, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
I reverted you because you were incorrect in calling the nom a duplicate. I did ask you for clarification, and waited while you continued to edit for four hours before reversing your removal. If you think I am being hostile, I apologize. If you think I am not showing you the proper respect for your admin position, understand that I don't really consider it all that special. Your quality edits and your conduct are the only things that either earn my respect or my disregard. Threatening to block me for reverting what I felt was a mistake is not a point in your favor, especially when I tried to consult with you about it first. Countering that was taking the time to explain that it was a copyvio, even though you didn't point out exactly where the supposedly a copyvios existed. Clearly, if I am asking where you felt they were, its a pretty sure indication that I am unaware how to fix the problem.
You note that I cannot nominate the article twice. Can you please point out where in the rules for DYK that it says that? As I failed to find such a rule, I submitted two different DYKs for the same article. Also, please feel to point out which policies that I "clearly don't understand," as well as how you feel that to be a constructive remark. - Hexhand (talk) 14:22, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for explaining that to me, Gatoclass - I wasn't aware of the distinction, and I thank you for pointing it out to me. If I understand you correctly, the DYK nom refers to the article being nominated, not the actual hook itself. What value is there in submitting more than one hook? As well, I cannot submit a hook for the same article on a different day, even if the info providing the hook was created on a different day. IS that a correct statement?
I will work with Iaian to get the article squared away and either he or I will let you know. I apologize if my actions made you crabby at the end of the day. :) - Hexhand (talk) 14:48, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
I wanted to let you know that I appreciate you helping the DYK hook to go through, and I appreciate you keeping your cool when things got a little hot. :) - Hexhand (talk) 14:08, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

It is a clear mistake of application of the copyvio, almost every single sentence is rewritten in MY OWN WORDS. Please Avoid_Copyright_Paranoia and have some sense. Since when speaking in ones own words and staying close to the original is the copivio? Be reasonable! Its disruptive when your criteria is applied so selectively and without real reason. Please examine it closely and please know that taking out one or two sentences copied from obituary is no copyvio. Your closer examination is needed - maybe consult with another editor who does not deal exclusively with the frontpage? Wikidās ॐ 11:16, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
I have fixed Fred Hardys article. It did have a few sentences too many from the source. Consensus for what? What was your objection?

You reverted my restoration of a DYK nomination by User:Wilhelmina Will, with [6], and edit summary: (I think we will need consensus for that first). I had stated: (restore this nomination, which may have been created in violation of a topic ban, but which seems otherwise proper to me, and content issues are separate from behavioral issues.).

Consensus for what? The principle of restoration of edits by banned users (which must include topic bans) is well-established, it's not controversial. Since I restored it, the nomination becomes a matter of content, not user behavior. Blechnic's revert was within guidelines, his right to revert was not challenged. However, my right to restore, it seems, is being challenged by you. Why? Because some issues are time-sensitive, I may be pursuing independent recourse simultaneously, but you could make that moot by reverting your removal. What are the grounds for it?

And where would the consensus be discovered? The nomination page is already a Talk page, so it's not obvious to me, and the prior use of AN/I to discuss DYK issues was a Bad Idea from the start. --Abd (talk) 15:51, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

Muhammad and slavery

Hi Gatoclass. I've looked very briefly over the content and I can say quite confidently that many of the sources used in the article are unreliable - some of which I have already raised on the talk page. There's a lot of original commentary and synthesis about what the sources say. For instance, I just removed an image (which itself was pretty irrelevant to the article) with part of the caption reading: "Muir's work also relates the story of Muhammad's relations with Maria al-Qibtiyya and the humiliation and envy that it reflected upon the existing women of his harem.<ref>Muir, Vol.4, Ch.26, pp.157-163</ref>". I personally have access to Muir's biographical piece, and I can quite confidently say that this is an opinionated evaluation of Muir's work as opposed to an accurate rendition of anything Muir himself states. Similarly, there's a lot of analytical unsupported commentary in the 'themes' section which doesn't reflect assertions made in Muir's work. I'm sure similar problems may be found in other regions of the article. Regards, ITAQALLAH 16:45, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

Here is Muir's story of that relationship. See starting at p.159 where he starts to describe "Jealousy of Ayesha and Mahomet's other wives" and "An affair with Mary creates scandal in Mahomet's harem". It goes on to describe

how one of the women in the ho-train

surprised the Prophet in her own private room with Mary. She was indignant at the wrong. The affront was the mote intolerable from the servile position of her rival. She reproached her lord bitterly, and threatened to make the occurrence known to all his wives. Afraid of the exposure, and anxious to appease his offended wife, Mahomet begged of her to keep the matter quiet, and promised to forego the society of Mary altogether. Haphsa, however, did not care to keep the secret to herself. She told all to Ayesha, who equally boiled with indignation. The scandal spread apace over the harem, and Mahomet soon found himself received by his wives with coldness and with slight.

The whole crew of them were humiliated about being supplanted by a foreign interloper who, loathesomely, was a slave, and doubly envious for one of the reasons their pimpdaddy favoured her which was that she produced a male heir for him (Ibrahim, who later died in infancy). Regarding the sourcing, a substantial number of the slave names and their biographical details are confirmed from multiple, independent, inputs and those inputs include publications of reputable presses and works of acknowledge scholarship ("Provisions for the Hereafter" by al-Jawziyya, Muir "Life of Mahomet",

history of al-Tabari, Sahih Bukhari as well as MSA Publication Ltd and the amply researched and cited monograph by E E Aydin which is available online). Go to Muir's work yourself (available online completely) and make up your own mind as to whether its content is summarised and referred to appropriately, but as for DYK, you really need to start applying the rules as they are completely strictly defined and not making up your own standards based upon exploiting the (inevitable) existence of differences of opinion from contributors to the underlying source article re its focus, style and content.85.73.215.163 (talk) 19:17, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

That Maryam was a servant doesn't seem to have been the whole story. In any case, Muir's work, as a 19th century piece, is quite outdated as compared to modern academic sources which are far more reliable and objective, and as such is not as widely regarded or used on Wikipedia as the more scholarly publications by Watt, Peters, the Encyclopedia of Islam, and so on. Lastly, you can't simply lump all the sources together in one citation to verify a passage which clearly has your own commentary interspersed. Further discussion should continue on the talk page. Haskells

Thanks for finishing the Haskell class ship articles. However I have a nit to pick. When I looked at a few, I noted you ended the article with "final disposition is unknown." Think about that for a minute. Did they just disappear? That would imply that somebody snuck into the reserve fleet and cut them out (stole them), or maybe they sank, but either way the gov't will likely have a record. Or did you mean their fate was presently unknown to you? In which case do you really think that belongs in the article?

If you'd like to find out what happened to most of them, the MARAD records are on a web site. I put a link to their Haskell list on Talk:Haskell class attack transport a while back. For instance the MARAD records state Glynn was scapped in Spain in 1984, hardly an unknown fate. They also record if there are any artifacts left. --J Clear (talk) 00:21, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

No don't thank me. ;-) If you only went back and removed the "fate unknown", I'd be happy. If you do want to do the full Monty, feel free to plagiarizereuse the verbiage I put in the low numbered ones. Given a few more round tuits, I may get to it myself. I'd given up on the Haskell task as the USN is blocking the IP block I'm in for some reason and I can't get to DANFS. But you've already done the DANFS scrape, so I don't have that excuse anymore. --J Clear (talk) 14:39, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

Hey there Gatoclass, I was just wondering that if when you add hooks to the next update set, and you add the credits if you could add the username credit in the {{user|Username Here}} format, its the recommended format, and it makes it easier when editing the credits section because theirs not all of the code that can be associated with some signatures (I still don't know why people insist on having signatures with all of code and such :P), also it makes everything look uniform :). Thanks and All the Best, --Mifter (talk) 18:28, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi there, Gatoclass,

The NPOV was disscussed. Last time, according to my request, placed "citation needed" where he had questions - and I fiiled all of them. I asked him if he has any question again, to post them next time, befor he post a tadd, and he found no citation problem (everthing is cited).

As I told him, ask me and I will answer any question - other, the NPOV tagg has no meaning (see talk page).

--Shevashalosh (talk) 10:24, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

I haven't removed it, I respect this, I just asked for reasoning. As to user expressing their mind, I have adressed it. Shabas complained about "Dr. title" - so I went and deleted it - beyond policy requirement (not to place it only on opening line) - and have posted a message (see talk page)that I will do so, which I did.
I asked ceedjee to to ask me any citations probelms of NPOV- befor placing such a tag, and this is exaclly what he did - he filled places he desired "citation needed" - and I filled all of them (that alrady existed, I just repeated them).
I Asked him again if he has any citation - and he had no further questions, so this is my reasoning.
If he finds any problem - whic he hasn't - he can always turn to me - but he didn't. --Shevashalosh (talk) 10:39, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

Latest DYK update

I don't know if you realised or not but an annoymous user added a commented out comment onto the Joe Dudley hook on the next update page with an objection to the hook. When you updated, that comment was copied over to the Template:Did you know page. It's not visible on the main page but either the comment should either be removed or something done about the hook. Just bringing it to your attention. Davewild (talk) 17:05, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

No problem and I agree with your thoughts regarding the hook. Davewild (talk) 17:18, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

I happened to notice your edit to the article adding the "coveted" note, which has now been adapted into the DYK hook. I specifically did not include that info because it is definitely not a NPOV and with a current Scott catalogue value of $26 the statement is really not supported. Several of the other stamps on the List of postage stamps are more coveted than this one, especially if we consider valuation. Cheers ww2censor (talk) 18:43, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

He keeps dleting the name "Israel war of independence" to 1948 Palestine War. For NPOV I included both names.

He also keeps deleting Siege of Jerusalem (1948), to some newlly invented name.

it is unaccpetble to delete history, just because you don't like it.

DYK - Ziggy - grammar

If I understand (which I don't) how DYK works, it looks like the Ziggy entry will be going up on the Main Page, and I don't see where I can comment on it. Therefore, I'm here. Grammatically, the hook, ... that after being kept indoors at an Illinois zoo for about three decades, a citizens' campaign secured Ziggy the elephant a new home?, actually says that the citizens' campaign was kept indoors for 30 years.

Several ways to fix this, of course. For example: ... that after Ziggy the elephant was kept indoors at an Illinois zoo for about three decades, a citizens' campaign secured him a new home? --Hordaland (talk) 09:10, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for response (though, strictly speaking, not satisfactory :-)). Perhaps even the Gulags didn't keep citizens' campaigns confined that long, and not likely indoors. --Hordaland (talk) 09:57, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Because he was responding to Talk:Main Page#Joe Dudley and not doing it with some unilateral decision. And Gato, you know that some admin swap out DYKs that are about to go up for others, or ones that fit more, so you shouldn't think of it too much of an attack on your choice. I don't agree with anyone that would blame you or the process for it. However, it seems that there was a BLP warning and the main page seems to need heighten responses and discussion later. Ryan did offer to allow any other admin to swap the previous one back in, so I hope you don't think ill of him for his actions. And I understand where you are coming from. If you would like to discuss it, you can contact me any time you want. You know that. :) Ottava Rima (talk) 14:23, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Okay, thank you. But I just want to stress what it may seem from a BLP issue, because it was on the mainpage. Some have pointed out that it was an outdated term, and instead of trying to think how to reword the same thing, there was a secondary option presented that seem to still DYK the page, so I hope there was no harm or foul. Yes, the additional awareness may be limited, but there is also the addition of weight in BLPs, i.e. is he known for this thing? What if people start thinking of him as known for this? Is that fair? You might think so, others might not, and it can be discussed on the talk page (hopefully it will be!). I just hope that everyone can understand each others positions. Otherwise, it might happen again. I would really hate someone to use things like this to push for a removal of DYK. :( Ottava Rima (talk) 14:33, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
I talked to Swatjester here. I hope you don't mind and you don't find that I presumed too much. Swatjester is very experienced and open to discussion matters. I respect the work that you do for DYK, and I respect the work that people like him perform on DYK. I'm always here to listen if you need me, and I'm always willing to look at a situation if you need an additional perspective. Ottava Rima (talk) 21:10, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

I wanted to leave a little note to say that my idea is mostly to allow the DYK people to make it clear that there is consensus among the admin there over the appropriateness of articles. Ottava Rima (talk) 13:29, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

On a different note - I need some help with this. I've never added a list before, and the list might need to change its names. Its supposed to be a list of the plentiful amount of biographical accounts written on Samuel Johnson by those who actually knew him before his death. The hook has a representative work from the three main sources that are used by biographers today. Ottava Rima (talk) 18:46, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

I expanded it to a seven nom, with only the major works (the notable ones - the first of a type, by his friends, had some impact). People should find it interesting that Boswell is known as the best, but there were a lot of competitors. Regardless, if it goes through as a seven, the notice template in the user page area can only accomodate six. Perhaps split off the six biographies from the list and have two message templates, or I could expand the parameters to include a seventh. Ottava Rima (talk) 13:31, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Aurora Village-Wells College Historic District

Thanks for using my article in DYK! I'm just curious about the change in hook. I'm trying to figure out what to pick and what makes good hooks. In this case, the NRHP nomination form, my primary source, had noted the Masonic Lodge as one of the most important structures in the district, so I chose that as my hook topic. Was it too specialized or something? I don't care what hook was used, I was just glad to have the article used. Just wondering for future reference when I try to write hooks. Well that makes a nice change! Thanks for letting me know :) Gatoclass (talk) 11:20, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Here is my what I responded to you on discussion on admin note:

Much to the conteraray:

Adding: 2/3 of article space was added info by ceedjee on the arab-palestinian story - in the last few days (including the ref that Gatoclass is talking about, so those are no "Israeli ref"). I raised no objection to that, since I didnt find anything wrong with what he wrote - and I stiil aprovre of it this very minute.

Changing: The only single change I did on what he wrote was the date. he put (probebly mistaken - nothing wrong with it) that the begginig date was arpril 2. I restated this single sentance to "Oreders were given on April 2, and a telegarph rleased on April 5, confirming the begging of the operation". This was done after I placed the image of this telegraph - stating so. He didn't object to it as well.

Ceedjee deleting - from this point on he kept deleting info, rather the adding info - eliminating the links etc. this is un accepteble.

As to Deir yassin massacre battle article - i'd like to ad info, ---- not delete, but keep getting a response of tin ear on talk page --Shevashalosh (talk) 18:15, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

1. It is well-known that Lapierre and Collins and Yoav Gelber are pro-Palestinian...
2. 2 or 5 is not an issue. As written in the talk page, I explained you that diversion operation started before the start of the main attack.
3. I have already added more information on wp that you will ever add on your whole life.
Ceedjee (talk) 10:23, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

WP/ANI

Hi,
You see, it is crazy. The funniest is Number 57 who was involved and who dared to block me.
There is really nothing scholars can do for you guys.
I asked support on the project Israel, on the project palestine, on AN, on AN/I, to different contributors, many supporting me and... I am the one who is blocked and blamed at the end. :-)
Just look at Talk:Siege of Jerusalem (1948). All these guys who come and vote without argument. Gilabrand herself forget that she chose once 1947-1948 Civil War in Mandatory Palestine instead of the "stuff" (because in more of that nobody looked at the content).
When one's know that I am pro-Israeli and work with many of them, that can give an idea of the situation of this society :-(((
Thank you whatever. See you, Ceedjee (talk) 20:18, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Don't forget that Zeq was effectively defanged long before he was actually banned. But I do think there is considerably less tolerance for POV warring on IP pages these days, we do after all have general restrictions which give pretty broad powers to uninvolved admins to act.

But still it's unrealistic to expect that new users who don't yet "get it" are going to be sanctioned within days of arrival. There are currently some obvious problems with S.'s editing, he will be given a little time to learn the ropes but if he doesn't respond or is incapable of responding I'm sure he will be sanctioned soon enough. So please don't despair or try to take on these problems singlehanded. You've done the right thing in making the community aware of a new user who is having some difficulties, but if you go edit warring with him and breaking 3RR you will just end up getting yourself into hot water instead. So I suggest you just take a step back and don't be quite so anxious to all undo his mistakes. You are sure to get support if it becomes obvious that Shevashalosh cannot behave appropriately, but if you step out of line yourself it just muddies the issues.

Nice to see you still around BTW, I thought "Alithien" had quit the project long ago, but it turns out you just changed your nic :) Gatoclass (talk) 04:10, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

4 months = new editor ? ...
Anyway. Thank you for your comment.
I know all that but I know too that it required 2 years to ban Zeq (and it was due to a "stupid" mistake he performed out of wikipedia) and meanwhile, he succeeded to put Ian Pitchford and Zero0000 out after 12 months.
Seeing all the articles protected on his version and not seeing any answer to my comments (because they were not at the right place), reading such comments as IronDuke's and being blocked by Number-57 and while I am aware I was unblocked, I can hardly believe the community (but some editors) take care about that.
This policy will kill the project. Ceedjee (talk) 07:19, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

DYK area

Hi Gatoclasss. You've probably seen me a few times around DYK. I was wondering of how you thought I have been doing around DYK, both, updating and writing them. I'l be happy to receive a few pointers from you if you have any. :) Thanks! -- RyRy (talk) 06:22, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

That's actually a pretty good idea. :) Having interesting hooks, and then a nice hook that "pops out" to readers at the bottom would certainly attract them to come visit again. And I do my best to not add related or somewhat related hooks to the next update. Anyway, thanks for the advice. Just to let you know, you certainly are a good administrator and contributer to DYK. Your there most of the time to update DYK, instead of having to ask administrators to update them if its late overdue and you can;t do it yourself. Your RfA was definitely worth it, and you've definitely improved DYK alone as an administrator. Even as a non-admin, you were always there to help get ready for the next update and review hooks. Keep up the good work! :-) -- RyRy (talk) 08:38, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
Heh, your welcome, and thank you to you to also. :) I've been told that too many times... you can just like at the threads above my talk page for a banch of them. :P Hehe... -- RyRy (talk) 08:52, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

<-- Along with the above comment. there have been RfA nominations by administrators also... one currently on my talk page and more in my recent archives. Anyway, I'm assuming you know that Wikipedia has reached it's 2,500,000th article milestone? Well, the 2,500,000th article is said to be Joe Connor. It's just a coincidence that the article was a baseball article, and almost all I write is baseball that have appeared on the DYK section on the Main Page, so I expanded it so that the article has a chance at at becoming a DYK. It was recently approved, and I just wanted to let you know that our 2,500,000th article will be appearing on the Main Page soon. Just to let you know. ;) Cheers, RyRy (talk) 09:00, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Heh, if I were able to do that, I would add something on the article's talk page with a category saying "Article milestones" or something. ;) That would be a good idea, IMO. And thanks for complimenting me on the expansion. :) -- RyRy (talk) 10:45, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

My suggestion for this page just got denied because it just barely missed the 5 day limit. However, the article was expanded by three times just today. Is there anyway to get a waiver on the time restriction?Nrswanson (talk) 12:10, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, I should have left a note to make it plain that I had validated the hook. The yellow portion of the fish is therefore not near the upper part of the eye.Nrswanson (talk) 05:36, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

New DYK template to make your work easier

Hey there, I've created an easy to use template for DYK clerking. As one of the most active clerks, I thought you might be interested in taking a look at it. Best, —Anonymous DissidentTalk 15:01, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Please change the statement on the main page, which is quite untrue. Two anonymous users changed "not" to "now" [it did and should read "it is NOT believed to be near the threshold for inclusion in the IUCN Red List (viz., the population is NOT thought to be fewer than ten thousand"], and the opposite ('now' instead of 'not') has been turned into a new last-minute hook. Xn4 (talk) 15:37, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Fixed. That was my mistake I'm afraid, I had to come up with a new hook because without the picture the proposed hook made no sense, but it seems I misread the source. Gatoclass (talk) 15:46, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
Ah, yes, I see the changes of "not" to "now" happened after "now" was live on the main page. But really, even with "now" corrected to "not", what's there isn't much good. "not less than 10,000 mature individuals" could be 100,000 individuals. We just don't know, because (as the article says) the population hasn't been quantified. Xn4 (talk) 15:52, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
Well if you can suggest a quick alternative, I will replace it. However, you will have to be quick because I'm about to hit the sack. Otherwise, you will have to leave a note at mainpage errors or contact another active admin. Gatoclass (talk) 15:58, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
  • Since you didn't get back to reply, I've gone with your hook. Gatoclass (talk) 16:21, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
Anything at all on those lines is a big improvement. Xn4 (talk) 16:23, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
You wrote at 15:58 "Well if you can suggest a quick alternative, I will replace it. However, you will have to be quick because I'm about to hit the sack." However, I see you went on editing until 17:42. Xn4 (talk) 19:40, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

It seems none of those who need to be credited for the current update have been notified. Gatoclass made the update at 17:42, and from a thread above it seems he's now asleep. You might like to take it up with someone who's still about. Xn4 (talk) 19:46, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Bringing closure to the WW DYK topic ban discussion ...

I have a proposal out to User:Carcharoth and User:Fritzpoll on their talk pages that you might care to review and comment on.

Also, I had a response to you at User_talk:Carcharoth which he suggested I bring directly to you. The relevant portion of the exchange was:

I'm inclined to agree with that summary, but I might add that it is not entirely true that "there is no ban in place". I don't propose to accept any articles at DYK that she writes on technical subjects or with offline references, and I will be making that recommendation any time she or someone else nominates any such article of hers. So there is in fact a de facto restriction on what she will be allowed to submit for the time being. I don't really see the point in trying to pursue further restrictions at this stage, given the apparent difficulty in getting any sort of consensus over this at AN/I. Gatoclass (talk) 07:20, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
Gatoclass, are you a regular participant within the DYK community? Rather than focusing on the actions of this one user who appears to have been unlucky enough to cross paths with User:Blechnic, would it make sense as part of the DYK process to require an independent review of any such articles not simply ones from WW? Or is there already such a review process in place? I apologize for not being up to speed on the formalities of the DYK process. --GoRight (talk) 17:51, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
Gatoclass is indeed a regular in the DYK process. I suggest you raise this further at User talk:Gatoclass or (better) at Wikipedia talk:Did you know (or wherever they hold their general discussions). Carcharoth (talk) 18:02, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Thoughts? --GoRight (talk) 19:01, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

I don't think there's a lot of WP:OR now as almost every line has a source in. Please take another look and let me know whether you still think there's WP:OR in any of the individual statements.(We will have to agree to disagree that it's WP:SYNTH, as it just gives the facts as the sources say IMHO. Junta trials (Korydallos)

Hi Gatoclass. Sorry for disturbing you but you are one of the foremost experts on DYK so I would like to ask you about my new article Junta trials (Korydallos) which has been nominated for deletion. Thankfully it appears it will survive but I would like to nominate it after it has been kept so that the deletion notice is no longer there. Here is my question: How long does the AFD last? How do I make sure I don't miss the DYK train? Any ideas would be very welcome. Take care. Tasos (Dr.K. (talk) 22:41, 16 August 2008 (UTC))

Excellent. Thank you very much Gatoclass. I already nominated it under the 15 of August section. Passing AFD seems to be no problem at all due to overwhelming "keep" consensus. Thank you very much again. Take care and I'll inform you of any new developments. Tasos (Dr.K. (talk) 05:22, 17 August 2008 (UTC))

Periods

My main purpose in editing those articles was to correct the link knot to knot (speed). I also, at the same time, made a few other minor fixes, one of which was removing the period which is generally not used in bulleted lists such as a reference list. Colonies Chris (talk)

Let's move on

A relaxing glass of wikiwine

I'm sorry that we rowed. I've certainly learned to be more cautious with my actions at WP:AfD and WP:DYK, and maybe you've learned something from this too. So, onwards and upwards, and let's put this behind us and concentrate on our editing- we'll forget this when we "row" with someone different, as is pretty inevitable on wiki, anyway.:) Sticky Parkin 03:10, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

I'm just saying, if in future you notify people of AfD and AN/I, using AN/I as a last resort, per WP:DR, then I'm happy.:) So let's put it behind us. It's not a question of "competence" at all, I've no doubt you are fully capable of doing so. Sticky Parkin 11:01, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
I just thought we shouldn't have a go at the poor bloke on his userpage.:) When it comes to AfD, standard practice is not in question, you should always notify someone if a page they made is up for deletion. It's just good manners. On the AfD template itself, for instance see the Nirvanix article, it says on the steps of listing an article for deletion after you've listed the article at AfD- "Please consider notifying the author(s) by placing {{subst:adw|Nirvanix}} ~~~~ on their talk page(s)." Why not? Especially if it's an established user who you know has worked hard on their article. Otherwise it feels disrespectful. P.S. I'm just saying, not arguing.:) I did have some wine last night and it was very delicious. Do so in memory of me :) Sticky Parkin 13:12, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

a bad block I think

Hi Gatoclass,
I think this block [8] is far much to severe. (I am not sure but I even think that technically, it was ok)
Paradoxycally, I have "quarreled" much with Ashley Kennedy3 (a man) but I can say he is here to develop content and has access to numerous and important wp:rs sources. He understands and applies wp:npov and has no hidden agenda even if he has his own feelings on the issues and cannot stand (yet) interfering in "controversial" articles such JIDF or with Einsteindonuts, which caused his block.
It is long and hard job to build a "team" to collaborate on the I-P content issues. I would like to ask his block is at least diminished. I agree to be warrant of him (if required).
Could you tell me where to go to ask his block to be releaved or diminished and give me some support about what to argue in such cases ? I am not familiar with these processes.
Thank you. Ceedjee (talk) 08:34, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

Ok. I understand.
Just for my information. Is this common to block "one month" after 3RR disputes ?
Because it is correct he did start 3RR (I had even warned him not to do that). Ceedjee (talk) 08:44, 24 August 2008 (UTC)
Thx.
I think I will discuss this with AK on his talk page first. Ceedjee (talk) 08:57, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi Gatoclass, since you recommended it, I'm asking for an opinion on this suggestion before I nominate it for DYK. Is this article ready for DYK yet? Attack dog

Hi, just regarding your edit to Attack dog; the source in question was from a segment on Campbell Live (a New Zealand current events show) and was broadcast on New Zealand National television (following an incident where a boy was mauled by 4 pig-hunting dogs). The segment consisted of an interview with the owner of the dogs to find what happened (the dogs went into a "feeding-frenzy" attacking the boy and their owner), John Campbell then interviewed a dog psychologist who said that this behaviour was the result of large dogs being interbred with fighting dogs, thus they "lose the will to submit". ~ AmeIiorate U T C @ 05:08, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Your DYK work

Hi Gatoclass. I just wanted to express my admiration for the amount and quality of work you put into the DYK project, and my sympathy for your feeling of burn-out at the effort. If you find yourself facing a decision between letting DYK's efficiency slip a little in the short term and letting your own well-being or willingness to edit in future be eroded, I hope you'll make the right decision. You owe that to yourself, not to mention to the long-term interest of a project (and encyclopedia) that would suffer greatly if you did get totally fed up.

I know the backlog is crazy right now, but we will get through it even if it requires nuking all the hooks under 4k - and even if you feel you need to take a break from DYK. Whatever happens, this won't be the end of the world unless we let it!

With very best wishes, Olaf Davis | Talk 16:32, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi Gatoclass -- just adding thanks of my own -- it's got to be hard work. I appreciate this; I need a second set of eyes to read stuff I write and catch the burrs: I swear I read the things through and miss all kinds of obvious things. (Maybe we need a "Read Me" department, less formal than Peer Review, but where people can put articles they've labored over just for a quick copyedit?) If Power misses DYK that's fine -- I just like to put one of my scribbles up there once in a while. Thanks for your time and trouble on DYK; I really do appreciate it. Hey there. I just wanted to say thanks for updating DYK. :-) I was poking around to see if there were any active admins until you came along to finish the drop. -- RyRy Public (talk) 06:25, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

DYN - wrong editor

Hi Gatoclass, just regarding this edit, I believe that you have accidentally recognized the wrong person as the creator/contributor of the article. Cheers --Fatal!ty (T☠LK) 09:15, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

On a side note, I have a question (already asked the editor, but because my DYK's time expires today, it's more urgent...): In this edit, a DYK that you verified was removed for the reason 'database locked'. It looks a lot like an accident. Is it possible to restore it, or was there a procedural reason for the removal that you may know about? Cheers, Ynhockey (Talk) 17:31, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

Spammy DYK update/housekeeping-type notice

HI (sorry 'bout the spammy note), DYK updates have been a bit slow and there's a bit of a shortage of admins actively involved. We are asking folks who listed themselves on Wikipedia:Did you know/Admins to update details on this page - User:Olaf Davis/DYKadmins, so we can grade everyone's involvement (and who, knows, someone may want to get involved more :) ). New ship articles

Hello. Nice job on the Pacific Mail ship articles. I posed a question applicable to both of them at Talk:City of Peking. Regards, Kablammo (talk) 13:40, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

RE: Prithviraj Sukumaran

City of Peking, City of Tokio 89/2

Updated DYK query On 14 September, 2008, Did you know? was updated with facts from the articles City of Peking, and City of Tokio, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.
