Cypriot 2nd Division

You've certainly done some good work on this article over the last couple of weeks. It would be good to expand the lead to 2-3 paragraphs as per WP:LEAD and add references the history section - then I think it should reach B class. I classed it as B, though the distinction between Start and B is marginal - if it were a league club article I'd call it a Start, but as non-league sources are less numerous there is more room for leniency. The best examples to follow for non-league clubs are the featured articles Leek Town F.C. and Margate F.C. One possibility for expansion it to include a Colours and Crest section.

When it comes to player links, make sure that the link points to an article about that player, not someone else with the same name - the standard thing to do in that case is to change the link to Joe Bloggs (footballer). Also, players who have never played professionally should not be linked, as it is generally accepted that they should not have articles. Oldelpaso (talk) 11:35, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, but playing in World University Games doesn't make someone notable. We don't even allow players an article if they've appeared for their country at U-18 level, which is a far higher achievement. Saying "it is only a matter of time before he breaks into the Columbus Crew side" is also a violation of WP:CRYSTAL. The only way it will be more work is if someone contests the prod, because then it will have to go through AfD. Making "tons of friends" is not what Wikipedia is about; it's about making a quality source of information about important stuff. Despite the quality of the article, Iro is not important enough to deserve one at the moment - I could write a very in-depth one about my village football team, but it doesn't make it notable. AfDs

Hi Gaucho. You can create a single AfD for multiple articles (see WP:BUNDLE) to save creating numerous ones for the same reason. Aside from this, USL appears to be a pro league, so I wouldn't bother AfD'ing any players who have played in it. Cheers, пﮟოьεԻ 57 20:49, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

It doesn't matter what level the league is at, as long as it is fully pro. USL1 and USL2 are both fully-pro, so any players in those divisions meet the criteria. T R was born in September, 1986, and has played 31 boys' and junior national games for Canada. Apparently, Rosenlund also has an EU passport, which means that he would not occupy one of the three slots allowed for non-EU players in the team if he were to be offered a contract.

Tyler Rosenlund who has been on the team on a trial basis will not get a contract with AIK this time. He didn't have sufficiently specialised qualities.

TR played the entire game against Syrianska but didn't convince the club's leadership, and so after a week's trial, the Canadian with Swedish and Finnish ancestry will have to look for another club.

AIK's coach Rikard Nordling motivates the decision: "Our assessment is that Tyler is a skilled football player, but given the current competition we can't offer him a contract."

(Translations not exact but close :-) )

The other two articles are about the game where AIK played Valsta Syrianska, and Rosenlund played the whole game; the summary article states that he didn't make much of an impression at all, and AIK failed to dominate the midfield. The play-by-play article says much the same (though in the 85th minute, there was a nice shot on goal by Rosenlund which was saved by the goalkeeper.)

So basically, Rosenlund came to AIK to try out for two weeks, they were quite excited to have him, but after one week he had to leave.

Hey, I noticed you were going through the PDL notable former player lists :) Good job keeping it all up to date... but I couldn't help wondering - are you simply deleting anyone who doesn't have an article, or are you actually going through and looking at whether a particular player is notable in the context of that club or not? Because I noticed that you deleted Terry Boss's entry from Vermont Voltage, when he is actually the current starting GK for Charlotte Eagles, used to play for Puerto Rico Islanders, and in fact should have an article about him (which no-one's gotten around to writing yet)... or I also noticed you deleted Julian Valentin's entry from Cary RailHawks U23's when he is currently on the roster of LA Galaxy and is a US U-23 international, so in the context of the RailHawks he is VERY notable. I mean, I'm all for maintaining lists and making sure that erroneous info doesn't creep in, but I think that you just need to refine your criteria a little beyond "if he doesn't have an article (yet) he must not be notable..." --JonBroxton (talk) 02:28, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

I wasn't being argumentative or anything, so please don't misunderstand me - I know you do LOTS of outstanding work on US soccer articles, an you're actually one of the soccer editors whose work I wholly trust. I agree with you that the vast majority of the people you deleted should never have been on the lists in the first place - but do you mind if I follow you around tonight and restore the (maybe) dozen or so players who I think should be listed, like Boss and Hall above? Actually, I wonder if I could ask you a favor (as you're going through PDL articles and in an editing mood...) - I'm currently in the middle of writing all the Competition History articles for all the PDL teams, I think I've probably done 30 or so to date... but, as you probably know, it's SO difficult to spot errors/typos/grammatical flubs when you have written the paragraph. As you're going through, and when you spot one, would you mind proof-reading the Competition History sections and making sure they read ok in terms of grammar, spelling, sentance construction, etc etc. Having an expert pair of eyes go over them would really help out. Firstly, please don't fill in the full name flag unless you know the full name. For example, from allfootballers.com, I can see that Marvin Brown is actually Marvin N. Brown. Also, there is no need to link dates anymore and in the infobox you don't need to put 0 in front of everything - just in places where it's needed for alignment. Hi, was only trying to be helpful! Sorry about the name mistake - is right on the article, but got it wrong above. I only put the R in because I saw it on www.allfootballers.com (although it's a subscription site, you can see names and initials for free). Putting in the normally used name as their full name is misleading if you don't know otherwise. I've two books that gives me full names for all players pre 1997, so try to reference them where possible, and others have books for later players. I see your point re the 0's, but I'm just following how every other infobox looks. If you want to raise it at the football project page, that might be the best way to address it. Re dates - they used to be linked and now we're not supposed to. No idea when/why. Not a Weston fan, am a Torquay fan, hence the name - though Weston have a few of our former players. To answer your question: the reason why I created the page under DiMartino's full name is because 1) she is listed as such in her UCLA profile, 2) she has and does refer to herself as Christina, and 3) the FC Gold Pride coach called her by her full first name (as opposed to, say, Carrie Dew, whose full given name is Caroline - but everyone, including Dew herself, calls her Carrie, not Caroline, hence it would make sense in Dew's case to have her main page created under Carrie Dew and not Caroline Dew). I was wondering if you think any college player can ever be notable? To me it seems rather ridiculous that the very best college players in any given sport aren't, in reality, considerably more notable than someone who meets the bare minimum of "1 minute in one professional game."

The women in this AfD all all among the very best college players, and I have taken the time to show they have all been covered in depth by reliable sources. Thus, I respectfully request you reconsider your !vote - that is, unless you feel no current college player could possible be notable for their athletic accomplishments.

Bryan Byrne

yeah, it's all to do with the fact that Hollywood Utd has four different teams.

• the PDL team (Hollywood United Hitmen)
• the over-35s team
• the celebrity team (the one which all the famous actors and whatnot play for in charity games)
• the amateur team that plays in local LA amateur tourneys, but *NOT* the PDL. This is the team which qualified for the US Open Cup in 2008 and beat Portland. This is the team that Byrne plays for when he's not playing for VC Fusion in the PDL.

• • I would say no to adding it to his infobox. It really is an amateur "turn up and you get a game" kind of league that he's playing in right now. The 2008 USOC team is a little different because it actually made it to the serious competition stage of a national event - which is why it's mentioned on the pages for Brian Dunseth and Matt Taylor for example - but Brian wasn't on the roster for Hollywood's USOC cup run, and will likely go back to VC Fusion next season, and therefore won't play for the non-PDL Hollywood team in the USOC qualifying rounds next season. I agree it is confusing, but for consistency I think that, for players who play for amateur teams, we should only add PDL appearances, unless their team qualifies for the USOC through USASA qualifying. --JonBroxton (talk) 19:22, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

Re: Washington Freemdom, Boston Breakers

I actually disagree, at least for the Freedom: the Freedom as an organization has been running continuously since the WUSA days, and (for the most part) has kept a definite core of players on their senior team the whole time. Boston I'm not so sure about, since I don't know any of the details about the Breakers organization now and then. Hmm.... I see where you're coming from, but I think those MLS organizations are still noticeably different from their USL organizations, and both Seattle and Vancouver weren't/aren't guaranteed to continue their respective names, so I think having them as separate articles is appropriate in a way that would not be appropriate for the Freedom. Also, there are other cases of "promotion" among American soccer team articles where it's definitely not split up; see FC Indiana and Cleveland City Stars. Boston I can definitely see being broken into two articles. Hi again! Anyway, reaction on BigSoccer was mixed, at least on the Freedom (everyone agreed the Breakers and Beat needed the two different articles). Most people liked it the way it is now, one article for the senior team in all its continuity, and one for the new Reserve team; some thought it definitely should be split up, and some thought it was probably fine either way. All of the self-proclaimed Freedom fans wanted to keep it the way it is now. So yeah, that's the opinions on the forum =-) CyMoahk (talk) 22:06, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

Hey, I found something helpful: Fotowiki, a UCSB graduate student project from 2006 that has lots of GFDL photos of the UCSB campus. Many of the photos aren't great quality, but there are several of each place (including the stadiums and fields) so you should be able to grab some useful ones. I even emailed one of the admins of the project to confirm that the photos are GFDL-licensed, and he said they are. Let me know if these aren't sufficient, and I'll go out and take some more. One comment about player lists: when you're putting together the "notable former players" list on each team page, you should probably come up with a criterion for what qualifies as "notable". My suggestion would be 1) anyone WNT (US or otherwise) experience, 2) anyone who's won an individual award at some point, or 3) anyone who's played at least 15 WPS games. I mean, I don't think players like Greer Barnes (LA) or Marisa Abegg (BAY) really count as "notable", at least not yet. Just my two cents. CyMoahk (talk) 16:19, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

Brittany Bock

I am curious why the recent edit to the Brittany Bock article was reverted; no reason is shown in the article's history page. The reverted edit was done in accordance with Wikipedia guidelines and policy, as described in the Wikipedia:Manual of Style, and changed none of the actual information in the article. For example, the guideline states that the introductory paragraph should only indicate the birth dates, not the birth location; that should be in the main body of the article; the edit followed that guideline. Thanks for the reply on my talk page. FYI, typical convention for teams is to use "the" if the complete team name (including mascot) is given and no "the" if only the city or country is given; see, for example the teams in the National Football League (with "the") and UEFA Champions League (no "the") articles. As a reminder, it is always helpful to add a brief reason/description of each change in the Edit summary when the change is made. Thanks again, and Happy Editing. Your question about location links prompted me to contact several experienced editors to get their opinions. I have learned that there is some information on location links as part of the Wikipedia:Manual of Style and Wikipedia:Linking, and the recommended style in line with Naperville, Illinois, (wikilink the city only, don't link the state) on the basis that it is visually clear that there is one link and it takes you to Naperville, and that Illinois is in many contexts (maybe not the first time in say, a county article of Illinois) an overlink. Certainly US, UK, France, USSR etc. are widely considered overlinking. While both methods are acceptable to use for linking city/states, one method of linking should be used consistently throughout the article. I trust this clarifies things; I know I will be changing my copyedits in the future to comply with this style. Truthanado (talk) 03:02, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

Brazilian Women's National Team Statistics

Hi. I assumed Marta's and Cristiane's Brazil appearances and goals before my update were correct. As Brazil is currently playing a competition (Brazil played two games so far, one against Chile and the other against Mexico, check RSSSF), I updated based on what was previously established in the infobox. Johnny Alcaraz

I don't know. I think it's a bogus decision, to be honest, but the difference here is that Johnny Alcaraz himself initiated the AfD by e-mailing Wikipedia himself and asking for the article to be deleted. I don't think we're getting into a situation where MLS players who only have USOC caps are going be under threat; I think this is a bit of special circumstance. I've left a message with the admin who closed the AfD to put a copy of the article in my sandbox, so if Johnny ever signs another pro contract we can easily recreate the article. --JonBroxton (talk) 05:05, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

• Not sure where you find the overlinking. If you are referring to you reverting his nationality in the opening statement, a simple look at the first 26 players from List of current MLS players (all players with last name beginning with 'A'), a list Luis Silva would be a member as an MLS player, 22 of the 26 have the format in which I instituted. Only 4 have the version that you seem to prefer.
• In addition, it can be argued that as a player on a Canadian team, Silva's date formatting should be that of WP:STRONGNAT, but will concede your point on WP:DATERET. You can leave it as such until I add more to the Silva article with more dates and thus becoming "the first major contributor in the early stages of an article". A simple look at the first 100 players will show that most of them are overlinked, but that doesn't mean it's the right thing. I'm undoing them as I find them.

As for StrongNat, it's the subject, not the team, so the subject here is American. The fact that he plays for a Canadian team is moot. Also, in Canada, both formats are acceptable so you can't argue for change based solely on the location of the team. For soccer articles, we usually use the American format (check the Whitecaps, TFC, Montreal Impact, and FC EDmonton articles and their season articles, and the Canadian Championship articles). But WP:DATERET takes precedence in this case regardless.

So, summing up, please don't link countries as it's against WP:OVERLINK and make an effort to unlink when updating articles. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 01:57, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
