Lengthy quotes in articles

[edit]

Hi GordsAndMore. Thank you for your contributions, but please don't copy and paste numerous lengthy quotes into articles, per Wikipedia:Overquoting. It is much better to summarize information from sources in your own words rather than listing five or six long quotes from copyrighted sources in a row. Thank you. DanCherek (talk) 17:40, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Dan,

Don't mean to argue with you, but in my opinion, the quotes I added were not that lengthy. The articles, quotes, photos, and citations I'm adding are all informative, and aid in describing the subject of the Wikipedia page. The information I quoted was in fact summarized and boiled down. You just removed a bunch of concise descriptions that describe the artist and add information about the artist. They were quoted from articles, and the publications were all cited and listed. These are from articles that have already been published, and I'm citing the article, so yes they are copyrighted, but I'm not stealing the information. I'm listing it, and it adds value and deeper understanding of the artist. Can you please put the page back as I edited it? Thanks. GordsAndMore GordsAndMore (talk) 18:07, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You say to "summarize" in my own words, but the point of adding a quote, is to show the quote verbatim. And show where the quote is from. These quotes are from writers and and editors who say it better than I could anyway. I want to use their exact words.

But you're telling me I can't do this? GordsAndMore (talk) 18:39, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Stop with all the quotes. David notMD (talk) 00:15, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Article watchers

[edit]

Be aware that for even modestly popular articles, editors with an interest in an article can put it one their Watchlist (menu item, upper right), so that the next time they log in, will get a note linking to the last edit. So even if you do not post a query at Teahouse, there will be editors watching what you do. And possibly reverting. Proper next step is to discuss on the talk page. David notMD (talk) 00:24, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for response. Will not put quotes anymore. I think what I need to do is cite the article instead? I am new to editing Wikipedia, trying to get the hang of it! Thanks for your advice. Are there any other pages you would recommend that I check out for editing and maybe one day making a new page? I am not being paid. And only want to add information to the Wikipedia pages I have knowledge in. I am a novice here! Appreciative of your thoughts. GordsAndMore (talk) 00:32, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Many of us come to Wikipedia with experience with a different content and citation usage (mine was science journal article writing), and find Wikipedia a foreign country. Persevere. Your decision to start with improving existing articles before essaying creating an article is wise. Know also that some articles can be approved by removing inappropriate content, or else tagging content (or sections, or the entire article) as citations needed. Adding refs is a good deed, as is fixing refs. In your areas of interest, look at articles that are rated Good Article or B-class (info on the Talk pages) to see what to aspire to. FYI, it takes some time to get the hang of the many arcane rules embedded in this big wiki. We can of course use someone with your skills. If I have one piece of advice, it is to stay 100% independent of your subjects. an optional second piece of avice might be to learn to use WP:Reftoolbar and Wikipedia:ReFill. --- Possibly 07:18, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
