MSU Interview

Dear Graeme,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. I am thinking back some decades here. Holland reliably spelled the UK way, whilst US colonies like the Philippines and Israel spelled their way.

But WP does not now conform to that – an hypothesis based on my 22,000 articles edited – and it's hard to believe Americans are writing articles on Dutch villages. I suspect the Netherlands has adopted a different "international standard", not one used by me.

Of course, these days, I could just fire off an email to the Dutch Ministry of Education enquiring about their curriculum.

Perfect Timing

Hi Graeme, perfect timing for an admin to contact me. I have recently become aware that I don't have good sense of what the Wikipedia community wants to include or delete on Wikipedia. I need an independent third party administrator to go through and review any articles I created.

If you believe any of the articles I started should not exist, you have my permission to delete them in the manner you see fit-- if I'm the only contributor, just instadelete is fine for me. It's important that Wikipedia maintain coherent standards and to the extend I haven't done that, I need help in cleaning up any mess I've made.

It would be best if a 3rd party admin like you or someone else on your team were to do this, but if needed I'll take the time to go through and nominate those I suspect may lack sufficient notability. Concerns over an editor

Hi Graeme. I had started a discussion on Charles Dickens page over one editors, Yogesh's, point of view section on the article. I brought up the excessive non white emphasis throughout the article (installed by Yogesh) which is out of proportion than what you would find in a book on him, and i had assumed it would be a regular discussion. However as i read various contributors comments on the user i became concerned. First concern personal attacks from the contributor, second concern white Christian accusations, third concern "white supremacist" accusations, fourth concern article was being used as a soapbox to advance a personally held political position (an example being the 'Franklin incident' section was longer tnan 'Dickens Later Years', which read like a history of the incident with nothing to do with Dickens), fifth concern warned of user's history and referred to ANI, INB. Surely with these viewpoints any impartiality is out the window? The other contributors seek an accurate, NPOV, balanced, weighted section with consensus, this is impossible with an editor with views i mentioned (who has also been warned of 3RR which Tom Reedy placed on his talkpage). Thats six editors (that ive come across) that have made comments on the user over just the past week, and looking at the article history there are others that extend back 3 years (he has also complained of an Anglo-American bias). I had hoped Dickens page would be improved by editors who had done similar with Shakespeare, rather than languish as class C, but one editor ensures it remains at thet level. A highly respected impartial editor, Old Moonraker, refuses to comment on the article due to the users personal attacks. The user ignores policy and plants his material at will, regardless of wiki requirement of NPOV, weight. Given the plethora of complaints by many editors, the partial viewpoints held by the user, i cant see any other alternative but a topic ban, which allows for edits by proxy. Hey, sorry I only just now noticed your comments here. Unfortunately (as I had not noticed your comment), I had updated the Account creator page, gotten it reverted, subsequently posted the suggested addition on the talk page of the relevant page, then posted the material back seeing no objection. Phew... That said, now that I've seen your comment, please do feel free to revert the changes in case you don't agree with the same. I'm quite neutral about the same. It's just that I realize that in the course of the ACC tool becoming what it is, the policy pages weren't updated concurrently to document the importance of the Interface administrators who already have the right to approve/disapprove users from using the ACC tool interface. That's a much higher right than approving users to go beyond the daily account creation limit by giving them the account creator flag. In my opinion, as the Interface administrators are already identified to WMF, are highly trusted, and have a right higher than giving the account creator flag, then why not give them the procedural go-ahead to grant the account creator flag too? Lazarus taxon

Howdy Graeme. I noticed that you removed the category Lazarus taxon from the category page and added Extinct species. I was just wondering, since species are actually found not to be extinct, would that category not be confusing? I don't know enough about how things are categorized really, but I would like to learn more about this. Also, this is the first time I created a category page. I was concerned because it seemed like if there should have been a page for Lazarus taxon, there already would have been. Seems like such an obvious category. I've done many more edits, I've been working on some of the self-contradiction and other areas of the backlogs. I am aware that I am highly active on the Anti-vandalism tool STiki and AfC projects. Which floods out my contributions frequently. I'm on IRC #wikipedia-en-help and #wikipedia-en-helpers often if you prefer to interview me in person. Though I should sum up my request specifically as this: I want to assist with the Backlogged projects; and that is the best way I know to maximize my efficiency and ability to make Wikipedia better. I have no intention to misuse or tamper with readability on a page. I'll focus on whatever aspects you want or even test me to show that I can and will use it properly. New student needs help

Hi there. A student, Jamal, has done some work on the Genetically modified food article. S/he added a History section on March 6. It is so poorly done that I think it should be fixed or removed entirely. It appears that next to no effort was put into the edit and no refs are provided. Another editor and I responded to his/her talk page note and s/he has not bothered to answer. The other editor posted some very good advice and a quick check of the suggested article revealed that at least part of Jamal's edit is not correct.

On the other hand, perhaps Jamal did try to do a good edit and this is beyond his/her ability. Unless s/he came to the article with at least some understanding of genetics it would be a lot to expect of a new editor to write a history of GM foods, IMO. In that case, I wish you would have responded to my post. As it was, it just sat there for several weeks with no sources to check for accuracy. As you know, there is a lot of argument over GM foods - who knows how many individuals used our article for history information in the meantime? It would be good to have a History section, but till it is done right a person would be better off looking at the History section of the other GM articles and get facts that are documented and/or presented in more detail.         • I understand that everyone thought what they were doing was for the best. Suggestions instead are to start a new discussion about the topic of the battle to see if people can sort it out through discussion rather than just reverting each other. If the badly-included section was pointed out then that would have neutralised one of the reasons for battle. Also calling people vandals is not helpful as the edits were not vandalism, rather people over enthusiastically trying to get their edit to stick in there. This causes the editors to get even more upset and to try even harder to get their edit in the page. There are other uw templates for edit warring {{Uw-editwar}}. Problems with your comments on canvassing

With regards to: "Some canvassing is valid, others may be trying to manipulate the outcome. Its sanctions are against the canvaser not those canvased, so statements and arguments from people responding to these calls will still be considered."

I really don't think this can be allowed to stand.

Firstly unless you are going to checkuser everyone who commented in the discussion you can't catch the canvasser even if they don't leave the comfort of their own home, and I doubt you can justify such a widespread check user on privacy grounds. Secondly even if you do checkuser everyone who commented in the discussion, you can easily avoid it by travelling to a different city and/or country, or you could canvass without commenting in the discussion yourself with a secondary account and thus avoid getting checked with a checkuser.

Even if you can catch them (which isn't necessarily easy as per the above paragraph) the worst you can do is give the user in question an indefinite block, I'm sure there are plenty of partisans in this discussion (and many others) who would be prepared to take that kind of hit to make their point.

On a separate point there is the sheer scale of the inappropriate canvassing in this case, I would estimate that between confirmed sock puppets from Hong Kong, the inappropriate canvassing on Chinese wiki and the inappropriate canvassing of editors with an interest in the Republic of China that at least 50% of the users who !voted against the proposal were bought to the discussion by nefarious means. In comparison on the support side we are probably talking about 10-15% in total, including those bought to the discussion by the inappropriate canvassing for the oppose site, the levels of inappropriate canvassing here isn't really comparable.

Even if you decide to close the discussion as move in this case what's to stop even more outrageous canvassing to take place next time (maybe for a different topic, maybe for this topic) and then the balance being tipped. Given this proposed move was heavily advertised legitimately there isn't really anything else that can be done to drown out the inappropriate canvassing that took place for this move request

If you take a hard line on canvassing and catch a few additional people up in the canvassing effort I really don't see this as a big deal, making the effect of the canvassing negative makes it less likely to take place in future which has to be a good thing for the project. -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 20:18, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Many of your points on Canvassing are valid. We base action of WP:CANVAS. Checkuser will not be used to try to identify who may have been doing it. The SPA's are at a big disadvantage because they know little of Wikipedia policy and so provide non-policy based arguments. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 21:13, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

But the people who had ROC user boxes and were asked to comment, aren't SPA's and have made some reasonable reasonable arguments. The impact of those people is significant. I haven't checked everyone who commented, but it did go from 33 Supports to 20 Opposes on the 11 March to 43 Supports to 45 Opposes on the 15 March, that's a huge change in the numbers of !votes over quite a short time period.

If you don't discount the people who were canvassed comments then there is no incentive for people not to behave in the same way again. This kind of behaviour has an enormous impact on our ability to solve this and other problematic discussions in future.

If we can't discount the people who were canvassed here I will escalate this, to Arbcom if needed, we can't allow this level of disruption to stand if we want to solve problems in controversial topic areas in future. -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 21:31, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

IP editors at Talk:Republic of China

I must start off by saying thanks for your efforts in trying to resolve the mess on that page. You have my admiration and sympathy.

I was just wondering if it is possible and/or reasonable for you and your two colleagues to say something about that fact that a large number of editors, mostly on the Oppose side, insisted on not registering? And I mean saying something more than than fact that it's not compulsory to register. As I said many times in the discussion, I found it almost impossible to follow conversations when several of the participants were just using IP addresses. My mind just doesn't work in a way the allows me to easily and separately recognise several different IP addresses contributing to a conversation. I think it made many of the conversations there even less coherent than they already were.

Obviously, as mentioned in discussion, there are also other issues with not registering, such as IP addresses changing, etc.

I know you guys don't make policy, but you will be setting a precedent in some areas, so any chance that the IP address issue could be addressed? HiLo48 (talk) 19:13, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Help with the drawing board

Hi Graeme Bartlett. I did add sources to the wikipedia page that I am trying to create, but when I copy and paste the new page, the new ref tags do not show up. It just shows the original sources I added. But I have added 5 new sources from external sites and also an independent article. Some of my sections do have two references on them for example summer bat count, independent shore bird project, and calling amphibians project. Can you help me with this problem? Should I show you the page somewhere else?

From what I've heard, "All rights reserved" in post-1977 works imply copyrights. I've heard that from we hope and some other people. If you are copyright expert, what does this imply:

The Odin Brotherhood

Hello.

I am not certain if this is relevant, but the administrator who deleted The Odin Brotherhood article in 2006 was later expelled from wikipedia for misbehavior. Here was one of his names.

Also, when a delete tag was added to the article recently, almost all of the content was first removed. Somehow, that doe not seem fair.

Hello. Regarding this comment, I actually rewrote much of the page. There was a lot of original research and synthesis that first needed tidying up, including a copyrighted pic that has since been deleted. Only then did I start the article proper, rendering the duplicate draft superfluous per A10. As such, if I made any error, it's perhaps in not requesting a history merge. I've also had an uninvolved admin look over the page in its new form, and he saw no issues with it. In future, if you have an issue, please take it up with me directly for a quick resolution. When I was listing the duplicate draft for deletion, a wiki message indicated that it wasn't an article and as such had to be listed on Mfd. So I listed it there. A move then clean-up may have been a better chronology, but at least the wiki community has a tidier page now. Same steps, different order. Thanks for the procedural info, though. RuPaul's Drag Race : Was it useful ?

Hello, I'm one of the various people who participated in the creation and the updating of the page about the fourth season of RuPaul's Drag Race. The thing is, I wasn't registered when I made a lot of these participations. You have locked the page, and now I can't do what I liked : type what happened in this episode or that episode... Is there any way you could unlock the page ? If it's impossible, is there any way I can at least modify it time to time ? Being able to sum up the Finale would be great...

Hello, thanks for those quick answers ! Well there's an episode airing Monday called RuPaul Rewind and it's basically a review of the whole season with extra scenes, audition tapes and interviews with the Top 3 of the last season. So I can do the Finale recap and the Rewind recap in a row. I'll try to edit my sandbox but right now I have some integration calculus waiting for me ;) Thank you for everything !

Request page protection

Hi.. i noticed you on the Requests for page protection page. I'm requesting semi-protection on the Rita Ora article as although shes British (moved to London the same year she was born) her ethnicity (Kosovo-Albanian.. and born in what was then Yugoslavia) clearly stirs up some political tension. Her page has only just come off full lock where no-one could edit. Hello, Graeme Bartlett. As a closing admin of the recent Taiwan/ROC discussion, I would appreciate it if you (as an experienced admin) could take a look at this discussion and give me your opinion. I'm new to this wiki and not thoroughly familiar with policy, but it appears that this discussion has many of the same problems as the Taiwan/ROC discussion. Most of the opposers seem to be Apple fanboys who have little policy-based arguments. If you could take a look at my reasons and tell me what you think, it would be greatly appreciated. Please confine yourself to adding comments after those already made, or the paragraph you are replying too, and don't attempt to refactor other people's comments as this is what leads to a mess and escallated tension. Sorry I thought you had removed the comments, but now I see that you replaced your case at the top. It is best not to do that as people will have commented on what you wrote earlier. You can add a comment that you want to withdraw your nomination, but I don't think that is your intent. Since others have supported your original proposal, you cannot just close it off now, as that would be controversial. I suggest that you just add a nice new comment section clearly stating your new case. You can stike off your own comments that you made on other people's posts, but only strike off your original proposal at the top if you want to withdraw it altogether and not propose the same thing. We need to show some respect to those that have put in the effort to the debate so if I close this debate there should not immediately be a new one, it is better to continue with what is there already, otherwise we make everyone state their case again. When you put in a new hook, put in alt1. Then reviewers can see the old and new and can compare them. Also you don't qualify for create expand as your contributions are only minor. But you can be classed as nominator. Article is big and new enough. I have never before failed a DYK because of a wrong creator though! I suggest that you remove yourself from the creator bit. The reference web site for hook fails for me, so I would not pass it as confirmed. Plagiaris is more tricky to detect here, but a Polish expert should check if the article is not a direct translation of its sources. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 10:57, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

Frank John James deletion

The deletion of Frank John James is questionable, as many people have asked for this for years and has yet to be posted. If there is something that can be changed to improve it, I would appreciate it. Deletion seems extreme for the circumstances.
