Malay names

[edit]

Dear sir, I have noticed that you changed the defsort for Amir Ajmal Tahir to "Tahir, Amir Ajmal" quite a few times. This is incorrect as Tahir is the patronym in this Malay name. かぴさん Kapisan (talk) 01:42, 25 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Spanish naming customs

[edit]

Hello, GrahamHardy. Could you please explain why you are changing Spanish names? I see that you are also hyphenating Spanish double surnames, eg Harold Lopez-Nussa, and moving their pages to incorrect names. For example, see this search in Spanish on Jorge Lopez Orozco, which is the correct name even if the FBI got it wrong. This is a lot of work that needs to be undone ... could you please stop until you demonstrate some sort of consensus for undoing people's correct names? Also, might you archive your talk page? SandyGeorgia (Talk) 05:10, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Re Harold Lopez-Nussa, what do the four references say on the article - that is what we should go with (or add new refs)GrahamHardy (talk) 07:35, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Re Jorge Lopez Orozco, what do the three references say - that is what we should go with (or add new refs)GrahamHardy (talk) 07:35, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I'll run through my other Spanish name changes to hyphenated and add them here, Thanks GrahamHardy (talk) 07:35, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Fabiola Leon-Velarde GrahamHardy (talk) 07:41, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Could you please archive your talk page? Trying to have a conversation with you while having to first scroll for half a century is going to be difficult. It is not very collaborative to put others through extra work when they would like to talk to you.

Whatever the references in our articles say, before moving an article to what is very likely wrong in the case of hispanics, I recommend that you google to see if a mistake or misunderstanding was made.

For example, there are more sources for Jorge Alberto Lopez Orozco then there are for the FBI Lopez-Orozco, which probably happened because the FBI had some database that couldn't cope with double last names, so they made it up. Presumably the person who created the article understood that. You can see here that there scores or hundreds of sources from the Mexicans who arrested the fellow, and presumably know his name, even if the FBI had to hyphenate it incorrectly for some gringo database.

Are you familiar with the Spanish naming customs that are linked at the top of the pages you are changing, for example, Leopoldo López, who is Leopoldo López Mendoza, and must be distinguished from Leopoldo López Escobar. Spanish naming customs are such that both the paternal and maternal last names are used, and they are not hyphenated. Please stop undoing the default sort that correctly uses both last names, as in the Leopoldo Lopez article.

The Leon-Velarde article looks corect, but it is the removal of the default sort on every article that should be corrected. Please don't do that anymore. Thanks, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 07:51, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Happy to archive my talk page if you tell me how to do it - not done it myself before GrahamHardy (talk) 07:55, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I put a link at the top of the page for you. It's red now. You just edit copy everything from this page, leaving the link at the top, and edit paste the contents from here into that page, then delete it all from here, and voila-- you have a clean page here, with a link to all of your posts at the top. If you give me permission, I would do that for you. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 08:06, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Concentrating on Defaultsort changes as that appears to be causing greater concern, now the article must appear in categories correctly sorted as per the article name - the default sort must match the article name in order to appear in the correct place in categories. It we look at article Leopoldo Lopez in the Category:Living people he appears between Francisco López Mena and Robert Lopez Mendy which is patently the incorrect position. He should be between Leonel López and Lety López... GrahamHardy (talk) 08:11, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Just found the following in WP:NAMESORT under Spanish names, "The sort value depends on how many names are in the articles title." so I believe I am doing it correctly.GrahamHardy (talk) 09:20, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Re archiving I thought there was an automated way - I'll ask at teahouse GrahamHardy (talk) 08:11, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Asked for Jorge Lopez Orozco to be renamed back as your reason (more references have unhyphenated name) is good GrahamHardy (talk) 08:32, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Feel free to remove the hyphens in the article if you know they are incorrect! GrahamHardy (talk) 09:09, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Shall we consider Harold Lopez-Nussa next ? What do the references say ? GrahamHardy (talk) 08:45, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Most references I can see have it hyphenated, so you may be on shaky ground with this one...GrahamHardy (talk) 09:11, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You are archived; this is wonderful! (You may find that more people talk to you now ;) In the midst of trying to maintain the 2019 Venezuelan presidential crisis, I don't really have time to delve into this now, but you are citing a guideline on default sort that is in conflict with another guideline on article naming. When I have time, I will delve into this. I have no opinion on Lopez-Nussa because I have not had time to look into it! Regards, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 16:30, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thought about this further. That WP:COMMONNAME and WP:NAMESORT are at odds here is not a dilemma I have time to sort. I would, though, suggest that COMMONNAME is a policy page, while NAMESORT is a guideline—and a guideline that is not aligned with the policy of common names. That is, Leopoldo Lopez's article is appropriate named, and we should not be forced to move the article just for a default sort. I hope you will take this into consideration, and think about no longer altering the default sort on hispanic names. Pursuing this would be a large timesink and distraction from editing :( SandyGeorgia (Talk) 20:01, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

please take a little more care in your edits

[edit]

For the third time, I've had to revert your edit to Mascarita Divina where you mistakenly set the name sort wrong. Please look at the subject and the actual name before you blindly apply a name sort other than the article title. This is far from the first time and far from the first article where you've made this mistake because you did not seem to understand the naming of the article. Please be more attentive before changing article name sorting. MPJ-DK (talk) 12:14, 13 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi GrahamHardy. I see you created the above article by moving content from Brima Acha Kamara. Unfortunately we can't keep it, as the content originated from the Sierra Leone Police website, and thus is a copyright violation. Sorry, — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 13:16, 19 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Can you check Brima Acha Kamara also as I suspect it comes from the same source, Thanks GrahamHardy (talk) 14:15, 19 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I can't find it anywhere online, and we've had some of the content since 2008. As far as I can tell the page grew organically and is okay to keep as-is. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 23:20, 19 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I've reverted your changes to the articles and filed a requested move to revert the one held up by a resulting redirect. Thai people are often referred to by nickname, but only in informal settings. Rarely do the use of Thai nicknames become so common as to override the Given-name Surname format per WP:NCP. Also, lots of Thai footballer articles are poorly written; please don't rely on information contained within articles themselves. I've PRODed the above disambig page, but you might want to tag it for G7 speedy deletion to hasten the process. --Paul_012 (talk) 09:25, 21 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Filenames

[edit]

My principle on filenames: is it plausible that someone would upload a completely different image for a completely different purpose, and give it this exact name? (True, the system warns you when you're about to do this - but far too many people just click through warnings without reading them.) If yes, then the name should be changed. For instance, we have biographies of (as of this writing) nine separate people named, or plausibly nicknamed, "Sam Hall". (As well, names that are 10 characters or less show up in the Short Names tool, which was created because shorter filenames are much more likely to be accidentally re-used.) Maeve Binchy novels

[edit]

Hi, I was just wondering why you're removing the "preceded by" and "succeeded by" names of novels from the infobox? Yoninah (talk) 10:04, 15 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Yoninah, as per Template:Infobox book documentation:
  • preceded_by - Title of prior book in series; will be italicised by template code (do not use to connect separate books chronologically)
  • followed_by - Title of subsequent book in a series or a sequel; will be italicised by template code (do not use to connect separate books chronologically)

As the Binch books are not in a series, I have removed these parameters...GrahamHardy (talk) 14:58, 15 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

And advice on file deletion

[edit]

Dear Mr. Graham Hardy, two days ago I uploaded photographs of some book covers, but they were deleted due to reasons related to copyrights. Since I'm not experienced in this matter, I would appreciate a short explanation on this issue. Namely, there are many photographs of book covers on the Commons, but they have not been deleted. What is the basis for deletion? The year of the book? I've seen that if the files are not used on Wikipedia, they would be deleted. However, I've used the files in pages on the Macedonian Wikipedia. I cannot understand what was wrong with the files that I uploaded. Thank you very much, Goran Petrevski. ГП (talk) 18:42, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with upload of File:TheDruie.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:TheDruie.jpg. You don't seem to have said where the image came from, who created it, or provided a license tag. We require this information to verify that the image is legally usable on Wikipedia, and because most image licenses require giving credit to the image's creator.

To add this information, select the appropriate license tag from this list, click on this link, then click the "Edit" tab at the top of the page and add the information to the image's description. If you can't find a suitable license tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia. If you need help, post your question on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. A tag has been placed on Category:Religious buildings and structures completed in 1156 requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! A tag has been placed on Portland Rose Challenger requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

The Portland Rose and Challenger were two different trains. The addition of the Portland Rose (train) article fully depreciates this redirect.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, pages that meet certain criteria may be deleted at any time.

GB fan informed me that this needed to be handed through WP:RFD. I will now try to set that up. IveGoneAway (talk) 16:14, 31 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have been working on alternatives to deletion through UP time tables as well as newspapers. I wonder if you have any information on the subject.
As far as I can tell the only use of the term Portland Rose — Challenger, actually Portland Rose — The Challenger, is to a section of Challenger through sleepers.: Carrying the numbers 17-87 and 18-88, passengers could ride the section from Chicago to Portland without a change of car. Between Chicago and Wyoming, the section was carried in The Challenger (87/88), and between Portland and Green River, Wyoming, the section was carried in Portland Rose (17/18), which then terminated at Cheyenne.
Similar through sections, but not necessarily Challenger sleepers, having destinations of Spokane (The Spokane), Denver (Denver Limited), Kansas City, and St. Louis (other trains), and were similarly carried by the Portland Rose.[3]
IveGoneAway (talk) 17:09, 9 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I have rewritten Portland_Rose_(train)#Service_changes_and_demise to add citations. I am telling you this only because you were the OP for the Portland Rose Challenger redirect and presume have information or opinion bearing on changes to the redirect.
