WikiProject Eurovision: Recent changes

Hello,

Please note that there have been some changes to operations surrounding Eurovision articles, these being that:

  • Template names have now been modernised and/or megred into super-templates, for example Countries in the Eurovision Song Contest has now been merged into Template:Eurovision Song Contest making it even easier to find everything under one template. If you are planning to create a new template, please keep the standardised titles in mind. Other templates have been modernised and a full list of them can be found here.
  • The Eurovision Song Contest and Junior Eurovision Song Contest articles have now been standardised to keep a consitancy throughout the project and to the genral reader too. Skeleton article drafts can be found for Eurovision Song Contest by Year and Junior Eurovision Song Contest by Year.

Talbot Avenue

You moved the page saying "as signed". Is station signage up finally? That would seem to bode well for opening.

There are a lot of stations that are signed differently from the official name which appears on MBTA maps - see the West End signage suffix on Science Park or the Peabody Square on Ashmont that do not appear on official maps or MBTA documents. Some even have multiple conflicting signs: Dedham Corporate Center (the official name) is variously signed as DEDHAM CORP / 128 and DEDHAM CORP. CTR/128, appears in timetables as "Dedham Corp. Center" and "Dedham Corp. Ctr.", and gets varying map annotations including (on the 2002 map that's still up all over the Fitchburg and Worcester Lines) "Dedham Ctr." So it gets weird fast.

Long story short, I'm keeping a watchful eye for station opening announcements. Given that Fairmount Line timetables and such use the full name of Morton Street, I suspect the official name will be "Talbot Avenue". If so, I'll move the page back but keep the infobox header to match signage.

Someone posted a picture of the new signs that went up recently (yesterday I think?) on railroad.net. The page name can be whatever I suppose, but I believe when we changed the infobox title styles, our goal was to have them say whatever is signed at the station since that's what they're supposed to look like. Hi, I don't understand this edit and accompanying summary. You removed the door-opening sides of the trains with the summary "this is misleading. the platforms have no doors. southbound train doors open on left, northbound on both sides". The platform layout before your edit shows the train doors' opening sides: trains serving the western island platform on top open their doors on the left, while trains serving the other platform open their doors on the right. Ironically, your edit summary describes the door-opening sides of the trains that you removed from the previous edit (the platforms don't have left or right sides, and since the platforms don't have doors, only the train doors can open). In my first edit, I removed the comment that only one island platform is used from the infobox. That is incorrect as both island platforms are used. Then to be consistent, I then updated the station layout section. If you want to have information about which side the doors open, it should be on the same line as the "train" not the "platform" since the platforms don't have doors. And again, it was wrong to begin with because doors open on both sides for northbound trains. Grk1011 (talk) 01:49, 10 February 2014 (UTC)

By the way, the lines for the trains say the train service, its destination, and its next stop, if applicable. Therefore, I have the door-opening sides to the platforms for the many layouts that I added, as it would be too confusing if I put them in the lines for the trains. Such a table would look like this:

This makes the tables unnecessarily wide. The lines in the table allocated for the trains would be more text-heavy, while the lines in the table allocated for the platforms would be bare. Epicgenius (talk) 13:51, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
I sort of understand what you're trying to do. If it was just one center island platform then "doors open on the left" could make sense since it's true for both trains in their respective directions, but it's still odd to me to have it written on the platform. How would you know which train it's referring to? With Wellington where the northbound train opens doors on both sides, I don't see how it can work. Grk1011 (talk) 14:24, 10 February 2014 (UTC)

I don't know. On the one hand, it could make the diagram to easier to read, but omission of the door-opening sides would also make people confused as to which platforms are not open for service and which ones aren't. Well with the MBTA, there are only three closed platforms (Oak Grove CR, one of the Community College islands, and the Brattle Loop at Gov Ctr). For every other station, the doors open to whatever platform(s) abut the track. Grk1011 (talk) 01:14, 11 February 2014 (UTC)

These diagrams were originally intended for other systems like Taipei Metro, Singapore MRT, Hong Kong MTR, New York City Subway, etc. which didn't have this problem, except for the latter, where closed platforms say "Not in service". So, yes, in that case the door-opening sides aren't really needed in the Wellington (MBTA station) article, but they are there for the convenience of the reader (there are some that can't deduce that "the doors open to whatever platform(s) abut the track"). Dear Project Member

Following a project community discussion, which was raised over the use of English translation columns on annual contest articles, and advice from the lead coordinator of The Guild of Copy Editors, who are extremely knowledgeable in regards to all editing practises and manual of style policies. A consensus decision has been reached to fully remove ALL English translations, as such content falls under the prohibition on original research, even if it seems helpful to the reader. This is because we have now to assume that every reader has access to automated translation tools that can always give them a sense of the meaning of the title in their native language; it is not Wikipedia's job to provide those tools for the reader. Which therefore means we are no longer to include an English translation column, nor are we to provide translation by any other means on contest articles.

Such information is currently in the process of being removed, and a new table formatting and layout style is being rolled out across all articles. Please view the new guidance on table layout at Wikipedia:WikiProject Eurovision/Format and Guides#Article layout. An example of the new table layout style can also be access via the collapsed section within this message. Thank you.

Mary Livermore

Hi. I won't edit war with you regarding Mary Livermore's name.[1] But note that she *is* referred to as Mary Ashton Rice Livermore in a lot of historical and present-day sources.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11] [12]-[13]-Rosiestep (talk) 19:03, 12 February 2018 (UTC)

I took a look and I don't think it's clear cut either way. It depends on the type of source. The historical sources seem to list the longer version of her name, but I believe that is just out of convention, not because that was what she went by. For everyday life, I've found "Mary A. See also section

Your understanding of WP:TRIVIA is incorrect, as I was not adding multiple facts in a list. I was clearly adding a WP:See also section, which is allowed, to link another Wikipedia article related to the subject. The policy states, "The links in the 'See also' section might be only indirectly related to the topic of the article because one purpose of "See also" links is to enable readers to explore tangentially related topics." Even if it was trivia, the correct action would have been to add the information to the article's body, not just delete it. Per WP:TRIVIA, "Trivia sections should be avoided. If they must exist, they should in most cases be considered temporary, until a better method of presentation can be determined." A "see also" section features links to other relevant articles. Sort of like a "further reading" section. You added a sentence saying that they sponsored an event. Shaw's and Star have sponsored countless events over the years and this fact might be perfect for a philanthropy section, but instead, it was haphazardly added to the end of the article. I might have been hasty in removing the fact, but as the editor most familiar with the subject, you should have incorporated it into the article itself from the get go. My point stands that you deleted the info for no reason. It wouldn't be philanthropy since it wasn't an act of goodwill. It was a sponsored event in which they were advertised heavily. It was relevant to the topic since they had their name on it for four seasons and even sponsored the league MVP award. Per WP:See also, "Editors should provide a brief annotation when a link's relevance is not immediately apparent [...] The links in the "See also" section might be only indirectly related to the topic of the article because one purpose of "See also" links is to enable readers to explore tangentially related topics." South African born American Singers

I will forgive your American pride, but per your edit summary, I suppose it is impossible for an American singer to be born in South Africa, isn't it?

Also It is sourced, but due to the stupid captcha system at wikipedia not being usable for my screen-reader, I can't in-line cite it. so next time you want to show your new yawk pride, please double check your likelyhood scale again, because one can always point to an example where you are wrong. So again, per your K.S. edit summary about American singers not being born in South Africa, my fello-born African would beg to differ. and I say this as myself an Eritrean-born Londoner who lives in Canada.

Unfortunately you must in-line cite it or it can't be included since it is a biographical article. I didn't say it was impossible, but it seems like a rather bold claim to make without any proof to back it up. I didn't replace it with anything saying she was born elsewhere, just that she grew up in NYC, which was already in the article. Please know that like Wikipedia, Discogs is also maintained by editors like you and I, so it does not qualify as a reliable source. Grk1011 (talk) 14:43, 10 June 2019 (UTC)

How the heck am i supposed to in-line cite when due to accessability i can't complete the captcha? I'm not creating an account because I am having privacy issues with my e-mail address at the moment and they aren't fixed yet. also to create account I hav eto complete a captcha as well. You guys have no right to expect blind people to do the in-line citation with the present captcha system in effect, nor do you have a right to expect us to create accounts just so you can add us to another stat and say "we have x amount of blind users." You guys ar eeffectively saying that our edits will always be reverted unless we do in-line citations, and because of the captchas being exclusively visual, we can't. way to go America, your Wikipedia site is for sure not violating the ADA (even though I am an Eritrean-born londone rliving in Canada, but you're a U.S. company/organization/I hav eon clue). May I be on record for also stating that I am not against sources. on Shelly Poole I removed all references to the name "Michelle Lena" because I can't find anything that says her real name is Michelle Lena Poole, and that Shelly is a nicname. If somebody can show me a source then ok, I'll view it and say, "this is where you got it from."

I do the same thing where I put a source in the edit summary, hence why you saw where I got my ource for Kim Sozzi from. When people revert my edits, I explain why I am unable to in-line cite but I always provide that I have a source I put in the summary. Should one choose to copy the link for me, lend me a bit of a hand in that way and in-line cite it themselves, where they can do the visual captcha, then that is cool. but don't just revert and demand me to in-line it. thanks. 199.101.62.225 (talk) 03:30, 12 June 2019 (UTC)

I don't know what pride has to do with any of this. If you want to add the information in, please provide a reliable source to back it up. I can in-line cite it for you if you post the source here. As I said before, the source you used before is not acceptable. The only other birth place I found, Melville New York, does not exist. When I had my girlfriend look for it, we couldn't find it.

The melvilles I could find are Melville, Saskatchewan, Canada and Melville, South Africa.

Eons ago there may have been a melville NY but according to my girlfriend it doesn't exist any more because she can' tfind it on google or on apple. we don't even have coordinates to go by.

Also I can't post the link here either because I need to fill in that captcha which is all visual. Eurovision template

Why are you so openly going against the instructions in the template? The instructions specifically say not to include countries that have never participated in the group of countries that are inactive. Because I don't believe it goes against the instructions. "Participated" doesn't mean performed at the contest. Lebanon was a named participant, selected its song, was shown on the official CD for the event, etc. It was a late withdrawal. If you want to add a new section, you should bring it to the talk page, as members of the WikiProject that maintain this template will have an issue with introducing what I've referred to as a can of worms. There already is a fair amount of edit warring each year on how to show previous countries on each year's page, I'd rather not bring that to what has historically been a very stable template. It actually happens quite often that countries go through the process of selecting a song with the intention of participating, but then do not participate. Off the top of my head I can think of
  • Israel in 1984
  • Yugoslavia in 1985
  • Ukraine in 2018 2019

I'm not following how the fact that it is not rare for countries to pull out after selecting a song for the Eurovision Song Contest supports inclusion of Lebanon as an inactive country. Inactive suggests that the country used to participate. Lebanon never participated.

It's not very clear what guidelines the WikiProject is going against, but things like describing it as "trivial" are your personal thoughts. The text is sourced by the entity that is organizing the contest (national broadcaster of Austria) and the placings and such are sourced by a secondary source that detailed the outcome. The secondary source Wiwibloggs, which you claim is unreliable, was actually found to be reliable. See, if I call it trivial that's my personal thought--and if you call it non-trivial, that's also your personal thought: two of your sources are essentially TV guides, not independent. That something is sourced doesn't mean it's relevant--if you don't know that then you wasted much of your time here. As for "found to be reliable"--meh, your editor Merynancy says "it's reliable, case closed", and "case closed" usually means "I got nothing better to offer" (since they do not offer a single argument), and the other editor goes for "it's reliable because its author is a notable expert", the weakest of all cases. So no, I'm not going to bring this to your project page, since that will be a complete waste of time: it is populated by fans of the Contest whose opinion en masse will always carry the day. You wrote that the name of the festival was just Jugovizija, which isn´t entirely true. The full name of the contest was: Jugoslovenski izbor za pjesmu Eurovizije. The name Jugovizija was just another name of it. I just added the translation in English. Help me to understand.

@Grk1011:These external links are the closest we can get to correct information regarding the Yugoslav selecion in earlier years. All three sites (links) mentioned were created by different people from different countries on the same topic. The information on those sites are more or less the same, one with more specific information, and the other two with less. Bits and pieces of the information can also be found on several other sites, including on wikipedia pages in other languages and official ESC fan pages, "confirming" the information on the sites mentioned above.

I personally think it was wrong to remove my cited mention of the fact that the Eurovision Song Celebration youtube stream revealed that the song would have OPENED the show (On an insta post from Wiwibloggs after the stream, Stefania voiced her pride at that decision, but I would personally not publish this, as there is already an adequate citation), which is completely different from the fact that it had been drawn in the first half of heat 2 back in January, which you are probably referring to when you say it was already mentioned in the article. Date formats

Hello! You recently edited the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 article where you changed the date formats in the citations, stating that "These haven't been allowed for many years now". The thing that I think you are referring to, is Wikipedia:Date formattings. However, the {{Cite web}} template already automatically converts YYYY-MM-DD dates to the proper format, because the {{Use dmy dates}} template is at the top of the article. @JochemvanHees: I was under the impression that it was sort of a patch so that they appear correctly while also alerting the bot of which style to convert them to when it comes around. It was set up to fix previous date formats, not necessarily to allow the practice of YYYY-MM-DD to continue, since as far as I can tell, none of the participating countries use that date style. @Kyle Peake: I have definitely considered it! There are 5 articles left and one that needs to wait until this year's contest is over. I'm sort of at a fork in my thought process where I can continue writing about San Marino's entries (which I actually don't care for) or I can move to picking and choosing country and years for songs that I did like (Greece 2012 for example). I feel like I'm already pretty deep into San Marino right now and should just finish it, however, so I'm torn. The remainder of their participation articles are actually already pretty substantial. Interesting to know that you have already grasped the thoughts that sprang to my mind; it must be remarkable knowing you have a good topic incoming, I know the feeling! Rules of the Eurovision Song Contest

Hey! Thanks very much for the prod before to take a look at the main Eurovision Song Contest article, I hadn't realised the work needed to get it into proper shape again before GA review. One of the things I had noticed during my review was the Rules section, which I came to find to be exceedingly detailed for the main article. I've since moved a lot of material over to the dedicated Rules of the Eurovision Song Contest article and I'm planning on giving this a proper review later to see if I can improve it up to GA status potentially as well! I'm still reviewing other sections of the ESC article, and I plan to take a second stab through as well, but it would be a great help, if you have the time, if you could take a read through the "Rules" section as it currently stands and provide a second opinion on its current length and breadth on whether it's still too detailed. It's a broad enough topic obviously, but given the length of the article anywhere that I can potentially slim it down or syphon off into other secondary articles can only be a good thing.
