Suggested improvement to HagermanBot

Hi Hagerman, kudos on developing a highly useful bot. I've noticed some false positives with HagermanBot though, when I insert extra text within my own existing comment, if the text is on its own line [1]. Perhaps HagermanBot can check if the closest following signature is from the same user, and if so ignore the addition? Quarl (talk) 2007-03-02 10:38Z

Single edit opt-out

I like Hagermanbot going after me in case I miss something. There are cases when I intend to skip signing, such as here and here. Is there a way we could have a single edit opt-out feature? E.g. we could add an <!--opt-out--> html comment. Especially useful for newsletters and stuff. NikoSilver 18:26, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

Write "!NOSIGN!" somewhere in the edit summary. Quarl (talk) 2007-03-02 21:08Z

Question

Is it possible to set HagermanBot to unleash hell on a particular page? I'm trying to watch the discussion at Template talk:Crash series, but apparently everyone is adamantly against signing, for whatever reason. Grandmasterka 21:38, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

Everyone's adamantly against signing because "signing" is ridiculous. This is a discussion system on the internet, not a blank piece of paper. Why should a person have to remind the computer to add their signature to their post every single time they post by typing four tildes, when it can just do it automatically? Is it such a surprise that a lot of people have a problem with this absurdity, when it's the only place on the internet where you have to manually identify yourself? When you post on a forum, your username appears automatically; when you send an e-mail, you don't have to put four tildes at the end so the recipeient knows your e-mail address. In the Wikipedia IRC, do you have to put four tildes after every comment otherwise your nick won't show up?

Hagermanbot false positive

I put a link at the top of an IP talk linking to a past revision, to show older warnings. Hagermanbot signed it, but obviously didn't need to. (Here's the diff). I don't know whether this is the sort of thing you can (or want to) stop the bot doing - in the grand scheme of things, this is certainly not a problem, but I thought you might be interested. Cheers, →Ollie (talkcontribs) 19:22, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Bot problem

Hey Hagerman. I want to opt back in so the bot will sign my talk page again. The trouble is that I opted out when my user name was User:Proto, and since then I have changed my user name (yay for Wikipedia:Usurpation) to User:Neil. Due to the way your opt-out and opt-in works, I cannot now remove User:Proto from the list. Well, I could remove it manually, but I'm not sure whether that would break something. Can you remove my old user name from the opt-out list? As it's still there, it seems to be stopping the bot working, despite my opting-in under my new user name. Hi, Hagerman. The bot didn't work in Jimbo's talk page, so, I added the unsigned template manually as can be seen here. I sent this message just to let you know. Thank you. --Meno25 08:36, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Bot + RFC = bad combo

The bot is signing posts (or at least one post) on the request for comment pages; these posts are not supposed to have usernames included in the signature, so this is a problem. siafu 12:49, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

You can place the rfc page on a list of pages that this bot ignores, so you won't be interuppted. Canadianshoper 05:18, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

I thought I was not supposed to sign in that section of document. I had left a request for Win to decide if he wanted to be included in this mediation effort. Sign my post message?

Why did you put a message on my talk page instructing me how to put a signature on Talk pages? I might've forgotten maybe once or twice yesterday but I corrected them.--Animasage 16:58, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

ha ha, yeah, Hagermanbot needs a time delay so I can fix my own mistake and not look like a dufus! ;p Twice now in the past week, it's slipped my mind to sign a comment, and by the time I get back to fix it your bot has already beat me to it! No fair! ;p (Just kidding, your bot is awesome) --Jaysweet 18:31, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

no i make a mistake

i was begging u for delete the page concerning offshoring for few weeks please if my teacher see this page i will never passed my examen.

Alternative to delay?

I was just kidding when I suggested a delay, but then I saw that a lot of people were very serious about it! I think you've made a case that a delay is undesirable. But I just brainstormed an alternative approach, though I'm not sure if it works...

What if there was a separate opt-in service that allowed users to say, "Yeah yeah, I know about signing posts, it's just sometimes I'm dumb," and if you opt-in to that then when Hagermanbot fixes your posts, it just makes it look like you remembered to --~~~~ instead of saying "this unsigned post fixed by Hagermanbot"?

I dunno, that's probably silly cuz it takes deserved credit away from Hagerman ;D It's just a thought, cuz the main objection that people who want a delay raise seems to be, "it makes me look dumb." This separate opt-in service would at least let us forgetful Wikipedians save face a little bit... ;)

Nah, nevermind, this is a dumb idea. --Jaysweet 20:32, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

yes. opting in. i agree. if signing is optional, why are we able to sign for someone else? if signing is mandatory, have wikipedia make it so. i think the bot should be banned. the_undertow talk 22:12, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
Well, the reason why the Wikimedia software cannot enforce mandatory signing is because, what if you go back and copy-edit a comment you already made? You'd have sigs thrust into the middle of your edits all the time, and you could never delete them because they'd get automatically signed! heh...
You can opt out of Hagermanbot if you want, there instructions around here somewhere... I think it's a good bot, actually, though I always get a little embarrassed when I forget to sign. :D --Jaysweet 22:15, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
ahhh. i did opt out because it was bugging me. i dont care for the bot. i dont like anyone signing my name for me. some countries call that forgery. about the mandatory signing - that seems like an easy fix. if this bot can recognize the lack of a sig, then a wiki feature could recognize a duplicate. either way, ive opted out, will attend anger management for wiki peeps that dont like bots, and proceed to have a beer ;) the_undertow talk 22:22, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

I wanted to implement HangermanBot on WP:AFC but I was concerned about where it would sign the comments. On AFC after a proposed article is reviewed a user lists a reson for the decline or an accepted message, followed by a afc b tag. Would it be possible to have HangermanBot sign before the afc b tag? Feel free to reply here. --24fan24 (talk) 21:13, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Suggestion for HagermanBot: improved edit summaries

First, thanks for writing and maintaing HagermanBot. I really appreciate having it running around taking care of unsigned posts. Second, you might want to refine how the bot generates edit summaries. It looks like it just takes the summary used by the person who failed to sign. This can be a bit confusing in the case of something like this. It might be good to specifically add the correct section title if a new section was added like that. — Alan De Smet | Talk 00:10, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

Got it! I think I'll implement Tagishsimon's suggestion and word the edit summary as "/* Section title */ Previous post unsigned by %Username%" Best, Hagerman(talk) 03:19, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

HagermanBot amendment suggestion

Would you mind considering whether HagermanBot might be amended such that when posting a didn't sign message such as this, it leaves a comment which includes a link to the section in which the edit took place (i.e. a linked arrow, as seen in the comment here.) It looks like HagermanBot has a hold of the parameter it needs since it includes the section title string in quotes as the last part of the didn't sign message. Thanks --Tagishsimon (talk)

Just a note...

I have slightly adjusted the config on HagermanBot's talk page. One thing is, you need a secret key from me to make it archive to a non-subpage (security reasons) and the other is, I don't really know what you meant by "11", so I've set it to 11 hours. Feel free to adjust (MiszaBot will not run again until tommorow). Cheers and thanks for using MiszaBot's services. :) Миша13 13:07, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

Not sure how the hell I entered 11... I must have been really tired last night! I meant to do 1h so that basically everytime the bot ran it would move every comment over to this talk page. Does that make sense? Thanks for adding the MD5 key! Best, Hagerman(talk) 15:48, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
That makes perfect sense - I know at least one other bot operator that has messages delivered to his talk this way (you could also just redirect the talk page to yours, like I did with my bots). Btw, you could specify "0h" as well (not that it makes any difference - my bot runs only once daily anyway). Be advised however, that MiszaBot uses minor edits, so being a flagged bot doesn't trigger the "You have new messages" bar. Миша13 16:27, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
I wasn't sure if I could do 0h without causing some unexpected behavior from the bot. I'm glad to know I can do that! I used to redirect my bot's talk page directly to this page but then I'd get too many confused edits from people who thought I personally added the unsigned template to their page. The giant link has worked well until I left for a few weeks and it built up. Thanks for your help! Best, Hagerman(talk) 16:47, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

HagermanBot Compromises Editorial Autonomy

HagermanBot sucks for all the reasons mentioned already...

The bot is intrusive and compromises editorial autonomy. Mistakes are made while editing on Wikipedia. Logic errors, typos, spelling, grammar, proper citations and neglecting to sign comments on talk pages. I am all about collaborating and having my shoddy work corrected by fellow editors, and I do not need a mother looking over my shoulder while editing. I hope you can appreciate this comment because the HagermanBot sets a precedence that compromises editorial autonomy. Paradoxos 00:31, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

Extremely Unencyclopedic Content

I don't care if this is a bot, and if it is an obvious joke, but it seems to me that if I had on my userpage the idea that I was responsible for some part of a historic document that was written more than a century and a half before I was born it would be inappropriate, and in contravention of userpage guidelnes. Hagerman, your bot is just a bit overzealous (assuming a bot can have human qualities). Anyway, I am adding instances of violations to an RfC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/ImprobabilityDrive) and these, of course, should not be signed. The bot however, seems not to recognise that the page is an RfC. •Jim62sch• 11:29, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

Do you think you could add a brief delay?

Whenever I write a long post (which I try not to do, but often do anyways), I forget to sign it when I post it.

I always review my comments twice to make sure they post right, and usually catch this on my own, only to run into editing conflicts with bots on any articles except really obscure ones.

Do you think you could put, say, a five minute delay into the bot's function? It's rather too good as it is.

I'm sure I mustn't be the only one with this issue. --71.192.116.13 06:13, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

Deletes EVERYTHING????!?

Thanks Mr Idiotbot. I signed my comment, and ended with some links to help explain my comments better. You cannot comprehend this so you delete everything? (Personal attack removed) Darklight1138 23:58, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

Automated messages from Hagermanbot

First, let me say that I love your bot ... mostly. ;^)

It has all but eliminated the need for the unsigned template. However, I recently got an automated message from the bot starting out with: "Hello. In case you didn't know, ..." I'm not sure what criteria you use for sending these messages, but it seems to me that if an editor has signed a significant portion of their posts, they probably already know about signing. ;^) It is bad enough that your bot catches when people forget to sign, but when it sends a message worded like that, (IMHO) it adds insult to injury. ;^)

I would recommend that you only send those messages if it is a new editor and/or most of their posts are not signed. For anons, the current message makes sense because you don't know if it is a new editor or not. If you feel the need to send the message to long-time editors, maybe it could start off with "Please remember to sign your posts ..."

Thanks! wrp103 (Bill Pringle) (Talk) 17:44, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

OptOut/List/Stop not always being processed properly

See this section for just two examples (if you've fixed this since then, great, but I was working under the assumption that I'd been rid of this bot for months...). -- nae'blis 18:07, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

Note

Hi! My name is Kemal and Karachays are my immediate ancestors. Actually I would like to note that you know shit about this nation. Your conclusions are based on artificial Soviet historical researches which were done when Karachay nation had been genocide and persecuted.

And if you will write something like “Turk’s slave” or “not Alans” again I swear we will find you through your IP address location and smash your fucking head.

Sorry if I was a bit rush.

Regards, Kemal

Could we step one more further?

This automated system is great since I often forget to add signature. HOwever if the editing page had a button "Save page with signature" or make the current "Save page" button have auto signature fuction. For instance. if you check the "minor edit", no signature but without check signature come with text automatically for "talk" pages.--Shoons 13:35, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

Problem is...

....the bot can't distinguish between someone who DOESN'T sign a comment and one who signs it unconventionally. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 82.44.214.197 (talk) 21:24, 15 May 2007 (UTC).

Source code/usage

I'm running a Mediawiki myself, and I'm having trouble with people not signing their talk pages.

Is your bot availible for download anywhere? --YB 07:23, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

Bot false positive

Hagermanbot seems to be confused by self-reverts. If you check out the actions before this edit, you'll see that I reverted myself after hitting the rollback button by mistake. I restored the page, and then the bot, attributed someone else's unsigned comment to me because I had done the restore. I suspect this would not be a difficult case to check for. Perhaps the bot should check the difference between the first and last edits of the previous editor to see if anything changed. If nothing changed (like in my case), don't autosign. -- SamuelWantman 21:17, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

false negatives?

Hi Hagerman, first of all: Great idea and great job regarding the HagermanBot! And also great job of weathering off all the criticism! (And I just love the Hancock spiel every time I visit that page... :o))

I'm currently proposing a (probably slightly altered) version of the HagermanBot for the German Wikipedia. I've become a bit confused, however, when I saw how many posts the bot did not sign in the sandbox. I've left comments of several paragraphs there, I've started headlines, I've indented... and the bot hasn't signed any of my stuff since my very first test. As that isn't a great basis for arguments ;o) ... is there currently a problem with the bot? Or why doesn't it work now? Thanks for your help, Ibn Battuta 05:20, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

PS: As I've seen some people moaning they'd look stupid if the bot signs instead of them (which is kind of stupid in itself, I guess ^^)--maybe it would help if you simply added a note on the top of your page (where you're writing about the delay issue) that it's just as easy to delete the bot's template and sign as it would be to only sign? And the end-result is the same: The next readers sees only the final signature (not the bot's signature), even though the history would tell you in both cases, that the user hadn't signed immediately. Sorry, I guess this wasn't a good description, but I hope you're getting what I meant to say... :o)

you are great

just by seeing your tasks, I'll award your creator --Andersmusician $ 22:48, 20 May 2007 (UTC)

Mindscript

Hi, I saw HagermanBot fix a chunk of the Mindscript talk page, and I was wondering whether you're working on the article or not, since we could use some help on that article if you have some time to spare. Thanks, Slartibartfast1992 01:42, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Talk:Operators in C and C, by RockMFR (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Talk:Operators in C and C fits the criteria for speedy deletion for the following reason:

bot error

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Talk:Operators in C and C, please affix the template hangon to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. --Android Mouse Bot 2 07:57, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Bot ignoring the list

Tried to prune some anons from the no-sign list - bot hasn't removed them. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User%3AHagermanBot%2FOptOut%2FList%2FStart&diff=133023818&oldid=133023812 81.104.175.145 21:18, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

Is your bot ignoring me?

Dear Hagerman

I deliberately put an unsigned edit on my user talk page, but nothing happened. I also tried to remove/then add/then remove again my name from the "do not sign" list, but it made no difference. Still, nothing happens!

Is this affecting only me, or is it more general? regards, Lynbarn 13:27, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

It's not just you. I tagged a comment earlier but the bot didn't catch it, and I see the bot sandbox tests are failing lately. —Preceding unsigned comment added by {} (talk • contribs) Like that. -Jmh123 07:33, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Bot on Talk Pages

Hi, I've seen your bot in action and was just wondering if it automatically signed comments on User_Talk pages (are these part of the talk namespace?). It would just be great for when the occasional user forgets to sign a comment. Thanks Guycalledryan 02:14, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Monkey proof message for inexperienced users

Background. A few weeks ago, when I didn't have a cue about wiki interfaces, I edited for the first time a talk page. The HagermanBot warning appeared:

I did my best to follow that suggestion and just manually changed the line as follows:

I kept signing like this (by copy and paste) for 5 days! I thought it was OK, and only 5 days later I discovered it wasn't. Notice that I am an experienced computer programmer, but the editing interface appeared primitive... HagermanBot is great, but the message it automatically prints may not be effective enough for inexperienced MediaWiki users.

My Request. Please include a monkey proof clue (e.g. a clearly labeled link) about how to sign properly. Consider that those who read it are deemed to be inexperienced users, possibly without an account, who most likely don't even imagine the existence of a "user talk page" for their IP address... Please make their life easier, and make your warning just a bit clearer. For instance:

Would you mind? Thank you. Paolo.dL 09:14, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Is the bot working? I just had to do an unsigned on the talk page for James Randi. Bubba73 (talk), 01:05, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

A question for you

I'm just wondering if your bot can also just watch my user talk page too. As of lately, not a lot, but just the reply of a user, and possibly in the future, an anknown user is discussing stuff with me about something, and of course, they just refuse to sign, even when I just asked them to do so. Reason I'm asking is that I myself, have no idea on how to add the whole unsigned comment thing onto the page. Thanks. Captain Drake Van Hellsing Savvy? 01:32, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Help desk

Help desk has a "Non-talk pages automatically signed by HagermanBot" category, but HagermanBot doesn't seem to be signing any of the unsigned posts. Sometimes, I need to look up who made the post so I can understand their question better. I've been using history to locate the poster, but if HagermanBot placed the signature on the unsigned post, it would save me some time. Thanks. -- Jreferee (Talk) 18:35, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

If you have the code to HagermanBot, I could temporarily run a copy on the toolserver. E talk 22:27, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

Big Brother 2007 (UK) talk page
