Credo Reference Update & Survey (your opinion requested)

Credo Reference, who generously donated 400 free Credo 250 research accounts to Wikipedia editors over the past two years, has offered to expand the program to include 100 additional reference resources. Credo wants Wikipedia editors to select which resources they want most. So, we put together a quick survey to do that:

It also asks some basic questions about what you like about the Credo program and what you might want to improve.

At this time only the initial 400 editors have accounts, but even if you do not have an account, you still might want to weigh in on which resources would be most valuable for the community (for example, through WikiProject Resource Exchange).

Hi Hamilton,

Doc James asked me to have a look to see whether I could help out with some of the copyediting requested by the reviewer. As you've seen, I've made a tentative start, generally in full agreement with your own perceptions. Since I agree with the reviewer on the need for careful copyediting (while begging to differ on details), my inclination would be to work gradually through the article -- a task which I would be quite happy to take on if there's no immediate rush. If you and James were happy with that approach, I thought of seeking consensus from the reviewer on his talk page by posting a message which he should find when TheSpecialUser gets back from Goa on this Friday.

One issue I encounter doing this sort of work regards my tendency to make a thorough "nuisance" of myself by throwing out uninvited suggestions. Although that's pretty normal on Wikipedia, I'm never quite sure how to handle the practicalities of this during a WP PR process... For example: I feel the sourcing in this subsection could probably be improved by using recent review/s like this [1] (though I haven't been able to access it yet). Could you or James perhaps suggest me a low-maintenance way of effecting such changes without complicating, or compromising in any way, the GAR process? Any pointers appreciated.

Hi Misty. Special User seems pretty amenable. And remember this is GA not FA, so the copyediting doesn't have to be perfect for it to be passed, in any case. Look, apart from editors like Doc James and I having to play whack-a-mole with the vandals and the denialists, this article is reasonably stable and editors are mostly very positive. If you think you've got reliable, up-to-date sources that are higher quality than what is there, then I say go for it! Leave a note on the talk page saying what you're doing - most of us will be cheering you on! hamiltonstone (talk) 10:31, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

Romney

Hi Hamilton. Regarding the phrase "more on managerial abilities than partisan affiliation", your edit summary indicated that you only looked in one source, but I noticed that two sources are cited:

(I) Barone and Cohen, Almanac of American Politics 2008, p. 789.

(II) Cohn, Jonathan (July 2, 2007). "Parent Trap: How Mitt Romney un-became his father". The New Republic.

I don't have these two sources handy, but I assume that Wasted Time R has them. Did you check both? It probably doesn't matter much whether the quote marks are used, but I thought I'd ask anyway. Sorry, only checked the first. My scepticism arises from the edit - a one-off edit earlier today that only inserted the quote marks, and by someone who has only edited WP a dozen or so times, and never the Romney article; plus the edit added an ungrammatical comma. Indigenous Australian art

Hello hamiltonstone, I recently revamped the "Painting and sculpture" section of the Culture of Australia article. There's still room for improvement, especially coverage of contemporary/post-70s/postmodern art, but more pertinently with the opening paragraph for Indigenous art. Do you think it's possible to cover the full range and history of Indigenous Australian art in a paragraph? I don't think I could do it justice. Hi, down there. Did you have time to see the Turkish tea video? (It begins in Turkish but continues mostly in English, FYI :-). I read your comment at the Istanbul pictures RfC. Thank you for changing yor mind on participation and for saying your opinion. The "19th century building" you refer to must be the Haydarpaşa Train Station. Other than the photographer's ability there is a silly issue that destroys the image. A few years ago the roof of the building burned, and the current photo is showing the building without the roof! Restoration work is being carried out and soon the station will become as beautiful as before. I find the attitude of putting the photo of a building which has been in service since 100 years (with a roof) without a roof (!) kind of (Put here a word by yourself that no-one is going to take as personal attack, "childish" maybe?) in case the article is not titled "Fire on the Haydarpaşa Train Station" or similar... I don't know why you feel compelled to make thinly veiled, and ultimately unnecessary, snipes at me at every corner. But it has to stop. Unlike you, I pay attention to what other people say on talk page discussions. This Haydarpasha image was used in nearly every collage suggested during the previous collage discussion. You never objected to it. You even said a picture of the terminal is a "must". Sorry, but I can't read your mind. I couldn't guess that when you said "a must" you meant "childish". And I wasn't the person who introduced this image anyway. In fact, I chose this one instead for illustrating the terminal in the Transportation section. But apparently there was at least some sentiment saying that it was better to show the structure as it looks now rather than during its heyday. So that's what went in the collage I created, and that's what went in the article. But regardless, we know the key issue is about that Blue Mosque photo that you have some inexplicable attachment to, and these side issues are simply additional opportunities for you to make more unfounded attacks. -- tariqabjotu 13:07, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Red kangaroo

Muckaty Station is a 2,380-square-kilometre (590,000-acre) Aboriginal freehold landholding in Australia's Northern Territory, approximately 800 kilometres (500 mi) south of Darwin. Originally under traditional Indigenous Australian ownership, the area became a pastoral lease in the late 19th century and for many years operated as a cattle station. Muckaty Station was returned to its Indigenous custodians in 1999. It is traversed by the Stuart Highway, built in the 1940s along the route of the service track for the Australian Overland Telegraph Line, a natural gas pipeline, and the Adelaide–Darwin railway. The area comprises semi-arid stony ridges, claypans and a stony plateau, and experiences a sub-tropical climate, with a wet season between January and March. The vegetation is mostly scrubland, including spinifex grasslands. The fauna is generally typical of Australian desert environments, and includes the Red Kangaroo (pictured), the Eastern Wallaroo, the Northern Nail-tail Wallaby, and the Spinifex Hopping Mouse. A site within Muckaty is being considered for Australia's low-level and intermediate-level radioactive waste storage and disposal facility. The plan is subject to a Federal Court challenge due to be heard early in 2013. (Full article...)

It's difficult sometimes to meet the burden of proof on such obscure matters, but I shall endeavour to do so.

I recall Ret. Major Les Hiddins had a post "Bush Tucker Man" series on Australia (Bush Tucker Man - Stories of Survival Episode 5: The Dutch Settlement). He suggested an Englishman had discovered remnants of a white settlement in the interior. The local Aborigines shaved their beards in such a way as to appear similar to the Amish/Dutch. It appears on several discussion sites; viz http://www.exploroz.com/Forum/Topic/46754/dutch_settlement_in_WA.aspx Which I am not submitting as ‘evidence’ per Wiki’s rules. Les Hiddins himself talks of this episode http://bushtuckerman.com.au/dutch-colony/ Unfortunately he fails to mention Muckaty in this article.

Palm by Bronwyn Oliver

Bronwyn Oliver (1959–2006) was an Australian sculptor, whose works were primarily made in metal. Raised in country New South Wales, she trained at Sydney's College of Fine Arts (COFA) and London's Chelsea School of Art. She settled in Sydney, where she practised and taught until her death by suicide in 2006. Oliver's sculptures are admired for their tactile nature, their aesthetics, and the technical skills demonstrated in their production. In her later career, most of her pieces were commissions, both public and private. Her major works include Vine, a 16.5-metre high (54 ft) sculpture in the Sydney Hilton, Palm (pictured) and Magnolia in the Sydney Botanical Gardens, and Big Feathers in Brisbane's Queen Street Mall. Recognition of her work included selection as a finalist in the inaugural Helen Lempriere National Sculpture Award in 2000, inclusion in the National Gallery of Australia's 2002 National Sculpture Prize exhibition, and being shortlisted for the 2006 Clemenger Contemporary Art Award. A lobby group who has made a defense on an issue should present 2 sides of the story, this has not happened on this page so I'm no completely satisfied.

Additionally, membership as a matter of growth is factual information which can be indicative of the health of any organisation, this should not be overlooked.

As a matter of interest to those that are not supporters of this organisation, they should be made aware of ANY changes so they can form an appropriate responses.

1. This article is intended to present accurate, neutral, relevant and encyclopedic information about its subject, not 2 sides of a story.
2. independent reliable source information on membership growth would be relevant at ACL article - not self-reported data unless it has been checked and accepted by a reliable source.
3. No, articles at WP are in summary form and encyclopedic so they should not be there to allow people to "be made aware of ANY changes".
4. I don't know what you are referring to as bigotry. There are some single purpose accounts who edit nothing but Jim Wallace and ACL, and the thing they seem generally to have in common is a pro-ACL stance, and there are a few other editors who edit across the 'pedia as a whole, who express a range of views. I haven't sensed "bigotry" in edits that i have reviewed, though i have seen bias.

Danie Mellor (born 1971) is a contemporary Indigenous Australian artist and the winner of the 2009 National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award for a mixed media work From Rite to Ritual. Born in Mackay, Queensland, Mellor studied at North Adelaide School of Art, the Australian National University and Birmingham Institute of Art and Design. He then took up a post lecturing at Sydney College of the Arts. He works in different media including printmaking, drawing, painting, and sculpture. The dominant theme in Mellor's art is the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian cultures. Since 2000, Mellor's works have been included regularly in National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award exhibitions and in 2003 he was awarded a "highly commended", for his print Cyathea cooperi. An update has been posted on 25 May on Murranji talk page directed to Hamiltonstone as follows:

Since your initial advice we have received third party guidance on this article from an experienced Wikipedia contributor. (It was agreed that the text required attention.) The article in its present state now meets the Wikipedia guidelines and therefore we ask that you remove the NPOV tag.

Further, we have settled on three images to represent The Art of Eddie Burrup. These are up-loaded in accordance with 'Non-free rationale'. Please review these up-loads. For your information, I contacted the Tea House to discuss the delay to my request to you about removing the NPOV tag. "Flat out let's discuss it" suggested I remove the tag myself which I have now done. Here's a copy of that discussion:

I have been editing the article on Eddie Burrup. As I started working on it Hamiltonstone tagged the article with a NPOV on 4 April and posted some advice to me on 5 April 2013. Since then the article has been improved with the help of an experienced Wikipedia contributor (advising me by email and phone calls). I have posted messages in reply to Hamiltonstone but have had no further contribution from him and I notice from his own talk page that the last time he posted any comment (to anyone at all) was 11 April. I have specifically asked him to remove the tag on 25 May. There has still been no response. How can I get Hamiltonstone's attention? Thank you Flat Out for your prompt and positive response! I am certain that the article is now neutral and I have three people who concur. So, in accordance with your suggestion I will now proceed to remove the tag. However, I must say that I would still have liked Hamiltonstone to respond to my notices to him as he was the one who tagged the article in the first place.
There are also some outstanding issues that I have asked him to look at, too, with regard to the three images that have been inserted in the article on the basis of "Non-free use rationale". These have attracted robot notices which I believe have now been addressed. WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre

Hello! Now, some of you might be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers:
  • Recruiters: The main task of a recruiter is to teach users that have never reviewed a Good article nomination how to review one. To become a recruiter, all you have to do is meet this criteria. If we don't get at least 5-10 recruiters to start off with, the Recruitment Centre will not open. If interested, make sure you meet the criteria, read the process and add your name to the list of recruiters. (One of the great things about being a recruiter is that there is no set requirement of what must be taught and when. Instead, all the content found in the process section is a guideline of the main points that should be addressed during a recruitment session...you can also take an entire different approach if you wish!) If you think you will not have the time to recruit any users at this time but are still interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters but just fill in the "Status" parameter with "Not Available".
  • Co-Director: The current Director for the centre is me (Dom497). Another user that would be willing to help with some of the tasks would be helpful. Tasks include making sure recruiters are doing what they should be (teaching!), making sure all recruitments are archived correctly, updating pages as needed, answering any questions, and distributing the feedback form. If interested, please contact me (Dom497).
  • Nominators, please read this: If you are not interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still help. In some cases a nominator may have an issue with an "inexperienced" editor (the recruitee) reviewing one of their nominations. To minimize the chances of this happening, if you are fine with a recruitee reviewing one of your nominations under the supervision of the recruiter, please add your name to the list at the bottom of this page. By adding your name to this list, chances are that your nomination will be reviewed more quickly as the recruitee will be asked to choose a nomination from the list of nominators that are OK with them reviewing the article.

Deborah Hutton page

I disagree with your reversion of my insertion of a personal life section on the Deborah Hutton page. I have sourced this information from news.com.au and I have found many other media articles which state the same information. I have referenced my source of the information and I don't believe I have been malicious in my intent. Have a look at other celebrity Wikipedia pages such as for example Dannii Minogue and I would argue that my inclusions to the Deborah Hutton page is not inconsistent with the type/tone of information contained on the Dannii Minogue or other similar celebrity Wikipedia pages. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Discopup (talk • contribs) 05:29, 26 July 2013 (UTC)

The article is a biography of a living person and Hutton has repeatedly refused to comment on what appears to be speculation based on people taking photographs of her / seeing her places with a person.
