Somerset cricketers

Thank you for the note. I tend to be more interested in Somerset cricketers from a slightly earlier era, and go through occasional periods when I add a lot of material, particularly about the obscure players with few appearances or the lesser lights I watched in the 1950s and 1960s. RL has been getting in the way of substantial contributions for a while now and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. I saw you had been doing good work on modern players and am happy to read and to chip in where appropriate. I have a couple of pet hates: recentism, as you might expect; and the tendency to put things into tables rather than bothering to write a decent bit of prose that explains all in a far more literate and colourful way. Refs for Somerset County Cricket Club

Hi, I added some references to Somerset County Cricket Club, as part of working my way through Wikipedia:WikiProject Somerset/Cleanup listing where it appears because of the refimprove tag. The quality of the the refs I added has been suggested to be a bit iffy (I'm not a cricket fan) & you were suggested as someone who might have some more reliable sources for this article. List of County Championship winners

I wish that you'd mentioned in advance, on either the Cricket WP Talk page or the County Championship Talk page, about your plan to hive off the list of winners into a separate article. It'a a major change, which I think merited some discussion before it took place to see if most people were in favour. Most people might well have said "go ahead", but personally I think there's a lot to be said for keeping the list of winners as a part of the main article rather than fragmenting it. Dar Lyon

No problem - though in this case some of his other work was actually mentioned in the Wisden obit... You don't seem to be only one with those blinkers though. Trawling a bit further through DYK, I found Sydney Rippon, whose career mysteriously goes on hold between 1914 and 1919 - no mention of a bit of a minor skirmish in France, Belgium and elsewhere. Jack Lee

Agree. Certainly ours is the more distinguished cricketer! But he's the one at present without an article, so asserting any primacy for him is a bit difficult until that's rectified. He's on my list to tackle, but probably not immediately: I only found a few days ago that the link in List of Somerset CCC players led to the footballer who made one Leicestershire appearance. London Counties cricketers

I'm not altogether sure that this category is a good idea, mainly because people are liable to confuse it with "London County cricketers", which is something very different (ie players who apperared for London County). It would be less liable to be confused if it was "London counties cricketers", ie with a small "c" for "counties". I can't see any good reason for a capital letter. It will be a mammoth task to add the category to every cricketer who played for one of the "London counties", especially as it looks as though you are including Kent and Essex players as well as Surrey and Middlesex. Perhaps the category article should hjave an introductory sentence setting out the qualification criteria? JH (talk page) 18:57, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

I've done a bit of additional work. Hopefully where I've changed your text the reason for the change should be fairly clear-if not do ask me. I've seen some doubt cast on Find-a-grave as a reliable source, as anyone can submit info, so I've added a reference to the official Commonwealth War Graves Commission record for him, since that's the official body charged with recording are Commonwealth war casualties from teh two world wars. Much improved for sure. Like any great British institution the army has so many traditions and so on that have built up over time (many unwritten), that only familiarity helps understand how it actually works. I've found this leaflet, http://www.cwgc.org/admin/files/cricket%20leaflet.pdf which has some useful background about cricketers killed in the two world wars. It only gives a complete list of test cricketers who died, but it does also talk about the alternative uses ground were put to and so on. David Underdown (talk) 09:35, 28 October 2009 (UTC)
