Sydenham Field(s)

Hi. In the Lansdown Cricket Club article, the first ground is credited as being at Sydenham Field, near Queen Square. I think (but have no way of proving with me here) that Sydenham Field (sometimes called Sydenham Fields) was on the south side of the Avon somewhere near where the Midland Bridge Road comes out on Lower Bristol Road, and running down towards the river from there; therefore not very close to Queen Square (particularly in Victorian times when there were only a couple of bridges in Bath). There's a Sydenham Buildings on Lower Bristol Road there and also, I think, a Sydenham Street which is only a couple of houses running back towards the river a bit further east along Lower Bristol Road but also goes south to the GWR railway line near Westmoreland Station. Sydenham Fields got built on when the Midland Railway built its line from Mangotsfield to Bath: this opened in 1869, and was on the south side of the river in Bath except for Green Park station itself (it crossed back to the north side just west of the Windsor bridge, near Weston station). What's confusing you? Hook referring to a ship under a different name to the article title? I try to find the most notable name to list a ship under when it has had a number of names. This may be her first, last or another name. Sometimes a more interesting fact relates to a different name than the article name, which leads to the above situation. I'm not exactly good at alt text (the two times I wrote something, there were multiple corrections), so take this for what it's worth! I believe you should mention the gender of the players, what they are wearing, where they are standing and that kind of stuff and also avoid proper nouns as much as possible. Maybe something like "Six females in green cricketing outfits standing on the outfield looking at the presentation stage" or so. You could look at the recent FLs and FAs on cricket (Gilchrist centuries FL had some interesting alt text) for some examples. cheers. -SpacemanSpiff 17:49, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

My only comment on the issue would be that people know what to do at a Featured content discussion, so there's no need to request !votes either way. Requesting comments is fine, as is expressing the hope to get the article/list promoted, but going so far as to tell people which way to !vote is right out. Somerset CCC players

Mmm. I rather think the two do rather different things. The Kent list is useful for someone who wants to see who Kent's leading performers are, and I'd be in favour of having a List of Leading Run Scorers and a List of Leading Wicket Takers for every first-class county, linked from the team articles (less bothered about List A, but I suppose Lists of those would be useful too). The Somerset list, though, is a basic directory which is useful in that basic way: if I were a member of the Critchley-Salmonson family, for instance, (which I'm not!) and wanted to know how many C-S's had played for Somerset, I can find out easily and then go to cousin Humphrey's article directly. I suppose that when every cricketer has an article, the category sorting will do this job, but that's a long way off, and it's also not in the one article, because category lists break into chunks of 200 at a time. I think we can accommodate both sorts: after all, WP is not paper! Yorkshire has a Somerset-like one. Middlesex has most of one. Kind regards. Johnlp (talk) 19:10, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

Yes, I see what you are doing and think it has merit as an adjunct to the Somerset CCC article as a list of prominent Somerset CCC players defined by some parameter (appearances, runs, wickets etc). But the essential point is that List of Somerset CCC players is encyclopedic because it is comprehensive, with all players included, right down to Royston Sully. To be encyclopedic, any other list should define the parameters by which people in it are selected, and it's perfectly valid to do that: but I don't think it replaces what we have already. You could amend the present list to include more data, like runs or wickets. But I don't see the point: the reason why this list is there is to act as a very basic directory to enable people to move on to the individual articles, a bit like disambiguation pages do. By all means, create new lists based on a particular parameter: that would be useful. But they don't replace the comprehensive list, they just sort it by a particular factor, and it should be clear from the title what that factor is - eg, List of Somerset CCC players by number of appearances.
