Thank you[edit]

The chance to stumble across fascinating, well-written, well-researched gems like Ice trade is what I love most about Wikipedia. Thank you for working so hard on it. --The sockpuppet of happiness (talk) 15:07, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank-you, SoH - you're very welcome! Hchc2009 (talk) 16:36, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

your GAN Ice trade[edit]

Hi,

I've left a few comments at Talk:Ice trade/GA1 for you to address. Meanwhile it's on hold. I think it's a wonderful article, very well written and illustrated. Great job! MathewTownsend (talk) 22:15, 14 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I've made the changes, and left a message on the page. Hchc2009 (talk) 07:51, 15 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

England in the Middle Ages GAN[edit]

Hi there, just realised I forgot to notify you of this, but I left the article on hold - largely as a technicality, I admit. It's really a fantastic article. Frickeg (talk) 14:52, 19 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help with the review! I'll try and make the changes tomorrow morning. Hchc2009 (talk) 17:32, 19 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Congratulations on getting this to GA. A job very well done.--SabreBD (talk) 11:44, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Thanks are also due to Frickeg, for an excellent and comprehensive review. Hchc2009 (talk) 16:05, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Belatedly, congratulations also. That really was top notch work from virtually a zero base. DeCausa (talk) 08:44, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!^^ Thx for your review. I´ll try to fix as much as I can. But I´m not of British or American origin (see my homepage), therefor my English is a bit jolty. I´m sorry. I would need much help by fixing every point. Wanna help me out a bit? I´ll ask my fellahs from Egypt Portal, if they wanna help, too. Regards;--Nephiliskos (talk) 20:33, 22 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No problem - you should see me trying to write in French, let alone German... not a pretty sight! Have a go at what you and the Egypt Portal folk can cover on the list, and if you get stuck, give me a shout. Hchc2009 (talk) 17:05, 23 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I gonna set green ok-hooks beyond every critic I was able to fix, ok? When done, I call mah portal members and you.^^ Best regards;--Nephiliskos (talk) 19:58, 23 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds sensible - I'll keep the article on hold until the team's had a chance to make the changes. Hchc2009 (talk) 15:51, 24 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Meanwhile I have already done some work, User:IryHor helps me out a bit. Thought I´d give you a short note, maybe you wanna look? Of course I´ll keep mah working on.^^ Regards;--Nephiliskos (talk) 20:01, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Have left a message on the GAR page. Hchc2009 (talk) 06:42, 18 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

For your consideration[edit]

WT:MIL#Henry VIII of England. - Dank (push to talk) 17:58, 24 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help, I'm going to get started on the article as well. In This edit you removed the "pp-semi-indef" template. Was that deliberate (seems a hard thing to do accidentally)? Grandiose (me, talk, contribs) 19:54, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No, wasn't intentional! (how I managed it though, I don't know!). I guess it should be returned... Hchc2009 (talk) 20:03, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've listed it at Wikipedia:The Core Contest/Entries, if you want to add yourself as nominator. I'll get some stuff added and redone today. Grandiose (me, talk, contribs) 11:51, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

FMPU GA review[edit]

Thank you for taking the time to review the article. The review was thorough and FMPU is better for it. When you get a chance could you check my progress (I might be done). Thanks again, – Lionel (talk) 10:45, 6 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work - have passed. Hchc2009 (talk) 16:44, 6 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Thank you for taking time and effort to review Pandurs article. I trust I have addressed all concerns you stated in the GA review, the last among those being the definitive date on the portrait of the baron Trenck. Strictly speaking I could not track exact name of an author of the portrait, but an archived source (linked at the GA review page) indicates that the Bavarian Museums catalogue specified that the painting was dated on the back to the 1742. The date makes sense in terms of being made during Trenck's lifetime presumably in an area where he was (in)famous. If this is acceptable, then it would be safe to assume that the author of the painting died more than 70 years ago - if not, let me know and I'll see what else can be done. Cheers!--Tomobe03 (talk) 11:35, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Seems sound to me. There are a few minor copy-editing tweaks I'm going to propose, and I wanted to run an alternative use of the term "Pandur" that I found in the literature past you - I'll sort that later and add to the review page. Hchc2009 (talk) 11:37, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Alright. Till later then - over there.--Tomobe03 (talk) 11:39, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

English Castles[edit]

Thanks for you comments re doing some work on English Castles.

Seeing some of the arial shots in the Olympics coverage got me inspired...

I am working on a Google Map as well (http://goo.gl/maps/CtrA5)

A couple of questions

1: I have added some citations to an article.. How do you get rid of the "citations needed" warning? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Warden_Castle)

2: I have created an article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Strings123/Bolbec_Castle) I assume I need to wait a few days before I find out if it can be posted.

3: Is there any way of linking the monument number in the Info rectangle at the upper right (Listing coordinates, construction materials etc., or is it better placed in the external links section at the end of the article?

4: I am adding links to the monument and Investigation History for each castle. The Victoria County History also seem to be quite helpful. Can this be placed as external links or is there a more logical place to put them.

5 Your thoughts on http://goo.gl/maps/CtrA5 and the info there would be helpful as well. I started to put qr codes on the info panels but they seem to take a lot of space without adding any additional info.

6. Can I remove Stub notice if I have added a few links and reworked some of the Information on a page (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cainhoe_Castle)

7. Is it possible to move this conversation to My talk pages, and what links do I have to invoke to notify you of the conversation taking place?

Strings123 (talk) 04:33, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've continued our discussion on your talk page. Hchc2009 (talk) 06:42, 18 August 2012 (UTC) And again[reply]

Higham Gobion Castle: I've aded a Monument link that matches TL number and describes the location. However: It describes it as a Fish farm. Any way of adding contrarian views as to whether tis is a castle or not? Strings123 (talk) 04:37, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

👍 The ed17 likes this. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 07:32, 19 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's getting there slowly! :) If I see another decorative terracotta tile though, I may melt down... My other task for the next week is to finish off another North Wales castle.
Hope all's well on your side. Strings123 (see above) seems to be getting to grips with the Wiki system which is good to see. Hchc2009 (talk) 07:37, 19 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ambitious! I'm aiming to get User:The ed17/Sandbox/Pennsylvania class battleship done by the end of the month or so. It's always good to see new blood here; there's not enough of it these days, I fear. Keep up the awesome work! Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 08:37, 19 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. By the way, if you end up seeing the Battleship film, watch out for the impressive 90+ degree turn near the end involving the battleship dropping the anchor and pivoting sideways across the ocean. I'd never realised that battleships could be steered like that, but it just shows how little I know! :) Hchc2009 (talk) 09:59, 19 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Eh. Depends on the speed. If the battleship was going fast, it'd either snap the chain (likely) or drag the anchor for a ride until it hit something solid, when it would snap the chain. Those ships are big, and changing the direction of a 45,000 ton battleship would take a ridiculous amount of force. Maybe it'd be possible with a (small) destroyer, a really strong anchor chain, and a lot of luck, but I doubt it with a battleship... though granted, the movie producers weren't going for realism, and I'm sure it's a really cool scene. ;-) Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 10:07, 19 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I made a similar point to my partner! Hchc2009 (talk) 10:10, 19 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
On an entirely unrelated tangent, have you ever thought of running for admin? ;-) Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 10:14, 19 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'd considered it in the past, although I suspect, judging from recent discussions around nominations, the community is seeking a broader "procedural" knowledge of policies than I possess. (Translated - I doubt I could answer the really tough questions!) A real blocker, however, is the recent involvement of the WMF and specifically Wikipedia in the politics surrounding US legislation on the internet; for various reasons, that would make it challenging for me to hold a formal position such as as admin. Hchc2009 (talk) 08:07, 20 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It depends on what you say you want to work in. I said I was going to work at DYK and could answer questions about it (I never did actually do that though... unintentional). If you say AfD, you should have some experience. If you say RfPP, you should be able to answer some questions about it. Etc. :-) I had forgotten about that. Is it really that big of a deal? I mean, anyone can be a member of a website; you could always include a declaration that you don't support Wikipedia becoming political because of the NPOV policy, or something similar. Just my two cents – obviously I don't know what line of work you are in. If you ever change your mind, I'd be happy to nominate you if you want...! Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 08:44, 20 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Ed - very much appreciated! :) Hchc2009 (talk) 08:46, 20 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Of course. Happy editing. :-) Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 09:47, 20 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

And said article is finally finished and up on main space. Hchc2009 (talk) 18:53, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Let me know when it goes to FAC! Do you want me to histmerge the histories? Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 07:40, 18 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hadn't thought of histmerging... If you could, that would be great, thanks. Hchc2009 (talk) 17:11, 18 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Done! You have an extra 1,172 mainspace edits now, but you can still definitely tell where you draft your articles. ;-) Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 17:53, 18 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Given my usual careless editing, the Wikipedia editor community is probably grateful for that habit! :) Cheers, Hchc2009 (talk) 18:14, 18 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Castles[edit]

Would you mind casting an eye over Caludon Castle? It caught my eye while working on Grade I listed buildings. I've done all I can with the resources I've been able to find online (which is more than I was expecting). I'm planning to go into the Coventry History Centre at some point to do some research on this and other Grade I listed buildings, so any suggestions for good books to look in for more information would be appreciated. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:53, 27 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've done you a quick map for it and added that in. Further sources you might like:
  • 2008 survey data, which revealed the probable form of the inner hall and the dimensions for various parts of the site.
  • Mackenzie gives the early history of the site and a bit more of the documentary history. Mackenzie's reliable for this sort of thing.
  • this gives some of the details of Berkeley entertaining there in 1600.
  • The Victoria County History includes details of the castle's park and mill, plus some other bits of relevance.
General thoughts. The description of the licence to crenelate might need tweaking; by the 1300s, crenelating a manor house was at least as much about creating a political status symbol as it was about actual defences, whereas this article stressed the use of archery. The tracery windows are worth noting a little more prominently, perhaps, as this was a very fashionable status symbol at the time (compare and contrast with Kenilworth's, for example). The 1662 damage isn't strictly during the English Civil War; the damage occurs following the Restoration during the slighting after Charles II returns to the throne and takes revenge on heavily pro-Parliamentary locations such as Coventry. By this point, the intention is utterly political rather than military. I think it was the only permanent nobleman's residence in Coventry; noblemen hired temporary properties etc., but this was unique in being a permanent base. Hchc2009 (talk) 07:13, 27 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much! Between Mackenzie and The Victoria County History, I've managed to expand it massively. Could you have another look and see if I've missed anything and check I've got my facts straight? Your comment about the damage being an act of vengeance makes perfect sense, but I haven't been able to back it up with sources. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:36, 28 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Happy to help. On 1662, found it... It's the 2003 work, para 4.4. For background on the city walls, see here, p.94. Hchc2009 (talk) 16:43, 28 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Brilliant, thanks! In fact, I've been meaning to do some work on Coventry city walls, so that's two birds with one stone. Does anything else spring to mind that might be lacking in the article? It looks like it might be in good enough shape to make GA, but the more information I can find, the better. I don't suppose you'd have any ideas on where the name "Caludon" came from? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:42, 28 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Try here, p.182, listed under "Callow Hill", from the Old English for "bare". Hchc2009 (talk) 19:01, 30 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Apocalypse Tapestry[edit]

Why on earth has this article been deleted ??? The item which the article described is the largest woven tapestry in the world. I am about to (re-)create the article as "Apocalypse Tapestry" as this is the name it is commonly known as, amongst English speakers. The French use the plural (tapestries of the...). I have checked out the French language article, and as a teacher of French I will be able to translate it. Renata (talk) 09:07, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If you can make a good article about it, go for it! But the copy I deleted in 2006 was not that article. Here's the complete text: "It is a part of the priceless collection in the Château d'Angers." and had a stub tab attached. Seriously, that was the entirety of the article. Also, _2006_! Anyhow, I look forward to reading an article about it that does it justice. Best of luck! - CHAIRBOY () 20:31, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to stand again next year, but it is slightly dependent on the WMF and the 'pedia not being in the international/national political news in between in quite such a prominent way as this year. :) In the meantime, it looks like we should have a decent squad of co-ords on the case, and I think the quality of the Q&A has been particularly good this year. Trying to figure things out . . .[edit]

I'm very new to Wikipedia and am trying to learn everything and help and am worried about doing something wrong. I hope this isn't breaking etiquette. From what I understand, you undid the bit I added on the page for William the Conqueror and Matilda of Flanders about historical fiction and you said to see a note on "talk page". I think I missed that? I looked on my talk page and yours and I couldn't see anything. I was wondering what I did wrong? Is it okay to ask that here? I really want to help other people like myself, and I want to do a good job. If I made a mistake with this, I want to know what I did so I don't make it again. Thank you for your patience :) BookBard (talk) 18:26, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Pandurs revisited[edit]

Hi! Please let me apologize for not sticking to the GA review you took time to perform regarding the Pandurs article. I felt I had to drop everything here on wiki at the time, but that was not fair to the effort you put into the review. I'm posting this to let you know that I appreciate your feedback, and that all issues you raised back then have been addressed and the article quality consequently improved. McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II in Australian service[edit]

Thanks for your comments and support for this article's promotion to A-class (I was busy with an essay all weekend, so I'm afraid that I didn't have time to respond to your comments before the review was archived this afternoon). Regards, Nick-D (talk) 09:21, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Not a problem - hope the essay went well! Hchc2009 (talk) 21:52, 11 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Probably time for a break...[edit]

I'll admit, I've been feeling more jaded here than usual of late - so it's probably time for a break and to do something new for a bit. Perhaps original research, or something like that! :) Anyway, in the meantime, very many thanks to all of you, particularly those that have helped me with copy-editing, advice and everything else over the last couple of years: it's been hugely appreciated, and you've been great colleagues. And best of luck with the ongoing task of constructing a still-better encyclopedia! Hchc2009 (talk) 21:57, 11 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dislike , but I understand where you're coming from. Make sure you poke your head in from time to time, eh? Don't want to lose you completely. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 22:17, 11 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Windsor Castle![edit]

Hi Hchc2009. I was thinking I would nominate Windsor Castle to appear on the main page on 20 November, the anniversary of the fire. I've prepared a blurb, which is in a sandbox at present, as the WP:TFAR page already at its maximum. Regards, -- Dianna (talk) 01:37, 18 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Will do, probably over the weekend. Hchc2009 (talk) 05:55, 18 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The blurb looks good to me. Hchc2009 (talk) 16:35, 19 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I have gone ahead and posted the suggestion at WP:TFAR. PS: We need more architecture articles ... --Dianna (talk) 16:45, 19 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Windsor to appear --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:55, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Hchc2009 (talk) 10:43, 17 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Klondike, FAN[edit]

Hi, I think the article is ready for FA nomination. There are some details but they could be left to a peer review.

To make it more stable, I have added some <!----> in the code about Canadian vs. US. spelling (checked in MS Word). I have also got a semi-protection, though only for a week.

Any suggestions? Soerfm (talk) 11:56, 20 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be tempted to take it to FA. If it gets bounced on the prose, then it can always go to peer review and return to FA for a second try after that. Hchc2009 (talk) 14:28, 20 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I took part of the FAR for Sinking of the RMS Titanic; in my view, the prose got worse during the process because reviewers wanted additions which the authors struggled to fit in. I suggest that we do additions as footnotes primarily in order not to disrupt the prose. Soerfm (talk) 13:30, 21 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It's one way of doing it. We can see how the comments come... :) Hchc2009 (talk) 14:52, 21 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'll nominate it then. Soerfm (talk) 19:35, 21 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Cardiff Castle[edit]

Absolutely fantastic. I don't think you've left much if anything, for the Doctor and I to do! Very many thanks. Although, for Pettifer to call a work by Burges "excessively gothic", is a little like saying Mr Kipling really shouldn't make quite so many cakes. KJP1 (talk) 07:58, 8 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As ever, happy to help! It still needs a bit of tidying up etc. where my drafting wasn't great though... I've got one of the two books I was still after, and will add a few bits from that in over the weekend. This will sound like heresy, but I'd agree with Pettifer about the exterior... But the interiors are gorgeous! :) I've found some out-of-copyright diagrams for Castell Coch which I'll try to scan in as well at some point. Hchc2009 (talk) 20:36, 8 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've been distracted by real life, and also by a few ArbCom things, but I've finally got around to finishing the GA review. Lovely article, easily meets GA criteria apart from containing a little too much information in places, and too many images, and the captions being at times too long. Minor things really, and shouldn't take too long to sort out. I've put it on the standard seven days hold. SilkTork ✔Tea time 16:32, 13 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, and yeah, agree, I tend to add too many detail in places... Will try to fix over the next few days! Hchc2009 (talk) 18:22, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nice one. Well done. SilkTork ✔Tea time 22:53, 28 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Main page appearance: Windsor Castle[edit]

This is a note to let the main editors of Windsor Castle know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on November 20, 2012. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/November 20, 2012. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or his delegate Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), or start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests. If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you might change it—following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle is a medieval castle and royal residence in Windsor in the English county of Berkshire, notable for its long association with the British royal family and for its architecture. The original motte-and-bailey castle, built after the Norman invasion by William the Conqueror, was designed to protect Norman dominance around the outskirts of London and to oversee a strategically important part of the River Thames. The castle's lavish early 19th-century State Apartments are architecturally significant, and the 15th-century St George's Chapel is an outstanding example of English Perpendicular Gothic design. Since the time of Henry I it has been used by a succession of monarchs and is the longest-occupied palace in Europe. A popular tourist attraction, it is used as a venue for hosting state visits, and is the Queen's preferred weekend home. It was used as a refuge for the royal family during the Second World War and survived a fire on 20 November 1992. More than five hundred people live and work in Windsor, making it the largest inhabited castle in the world. (Full article...)

GA nomination for Caerphilly Castle[edit]

Greetings, Hchc2009! I just wanted to let you know that I will be reviewing your GA nomination for Caerphilly Castle. I'll leave a link to the review page here, for reference. Good luck! :) Like my singing? Ha-la-la-la-la-la-LA-LAAA!!! (talk) 17:10, 15 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers - and thanks! Hchc2009 (talk) 17:42, 15 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I'm the editor who added the bit about heritage tourism which you've removed. Personally, I'm not too fussy as long as there is some brief mention of its present role as a tourist venue, as is developed in a later section. My authority for saying "one of the best" is ref. No. 51 below, which lists Warwick Castle as one of the UK's "top 10" historic houses and monuments. Cheers, Bjenks (talk) 20:01, 15 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Probably best followed up on the article talk page, but the bit I removed was "the Tussauds Group which developed it into one of Britain's best heritage tourism venues." The BBC article doesn't talk about Tussard's role in developing the castle as a tourist location, and the article main space merely notes it being bought by the group. There's also a different between the BBC article and what's actually said in the article, which might be worth checking. The article says that "In 2001, Warwick Castle was named one of Britain's "Top 10 historic houses and monuments" by the British Tourist Authority; the list included Tower of London, Stonehenge, and Edinburgh Castle." The article used as a references notes a list of the "the top 20 tourist attractions" (unspecified) from the BTA, but it not all clear to me that the "top 10 historic houses and monuments" listed by the BBC in the sidebar are the BTA's own "top 10" list or the BBC's choice from the wider list of 20, or something else again. An "historic house and monument" is also different from a heritage tourism venue (e.g. the Jorvik centre is a heritage tourism venue, but isn't a historic house or monument). Hchc2009 (talk) 20:10, 15 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
NB: the BBC article also uses the term "Nine out of 10 of the most popular historic homes and monuments", rather than "best", which is a slightly different judgement!) :) Hchc2009 (talk) 20:25, 15 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, my wording was too loose. In fact, as a visitor with medieval interests, I found Kenilworth and Caerphilly much "better" castles to clamber around. Cheers, Bjenks (talk) 04:30, 16 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Agree! BTW, for visitor stats I'd recommend - if you haven't come across them already - ALVA and Visit England. They're only partial, but they can be quite useful and are neutral, reliable sources. I've only just found it - and it may not be classed as a "reliable source" for our purposes - but I did enjoy this thesis by Elizabeth Bishop; there's an interesting bit on Warwick and there's a whole bit on statistics as well. Clark (Cdtew) and I are wondering about FAC for this one. I've asked where he's searched for sources. Anything you want to add at the ACR page on FAC would be welcome. - Dank (push to talk) 03:16, 31 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think it should work well at FAC, although it would be worth Cdtew adding in a map or two to illustrate some of the events. It's a bit out of my specialist area of expertise (!), but I've suggested one more source for the early 20th century. There are probably some local publications produced around North Carolina as well, but they're not showing up on JSTOR et al. It's nice to see more writing in this area of milhist!
