Cynthia Baldwin[edit]

Hi, Huggylaw. Thanks for adding to one of the articles I created, Cynthia Baldwin. I need you to look at something you've done, and consider making some changes. Currently, I see you've added a paragraph to the article that reads as follows:

A member of Law Review at Duquesne Law School, Fulbright Lecturer and Guest Scholar at the Brookings Institution, Justice Baldwin was a trial judge in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas for 16 years before being appointed to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court by Governor Rendell. A distinguished public servant, she previously served as Attorney-in-Charge and Deputy Attorney General, Western Regional Office of Attorney General, Bureau of Consumer Protection. Justice Baldwin was a member of the Board of Trustees of The Pennsylvania State University from 1995 until 2010 and chaired the board from 2004-2007. She is also a director emerita of the Duquesne University Board of Directors. She is a member of and formerly chaired the board of the Association of Governing Boards of Colleges and Universities (AGB) in Washington, D.C., a member of the Board of Directors of Koppers Holdings Inc. in Pittsburgh chairing the Nominating and Governance Committee and a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors , Three Rivers Chapter. Justice Baldwin was a professor at Duquesne University School of Law and has lectured and taught extensively both in the United States and internationally. Among her many awards are the History Makers Award in Government from the Senator John Heinz History Center in 2010, the International Women’s Forum Women Who Make a Difference award in 2009 and the Athena Award in 2007. She has been listed for many years in Who’s Who in American Law.

Unfortunately, this is cut and paste from Penn State's website. We're not allowed to plagiarize on Wikipedia like this, so I'd like you to remove this paragraph, and see what material you can salvage from it and then rewrite it in your own words. Thanks. Diannaa, thank you for your concern but there are a few problems with your deletion. First, the material came from The HistoryMakers which was cited as a reference. The information from the HistoryMakers is used with Hon. Cynthia Baldwin's and the website's permission but more importantly it was cited as a reference. Additionally, I am the one who drafted that paragraph with help from Justice Baldwin. As long as I am properly referencing the material why would I not be permitted to cite the material. I also see a change where an original paragraph that was drafted by me was deleted. As long as the material is properly referenced is there an issue in using it? I can also get written permission from the HistoryMakers and Justice Cynthia Baldwin. User: Huggylaw Huggylaw (talk) 17:06, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Additionally, the last paragraph in the Sandusky section that was replaced by me was incorrect and libelous. I have been advised by Justice Baldwin (ret.) that continued publishing of incorrect and libelous material might result in legal action by the party intentionally writing and submitting it. As I am an attorney as well, I do my best to follow all rules including Wikipedia's to the fullest extent.

I will review the deleted biography section that I originally wrote and rewrite it. I have also contacted The HistoryMakers to obtain their permission to reprint that material.

By the way, thank you, Diannaa, for your assistance in navigating the Wikipedia rules. Your guidance is appreciated as some of the rules seem arbitrary and opaque as some information which is posted on Wikipedia is very obviously incorrect and lacks proper citation but is allowed to remain. Hi Huggylaw. I have reverted your changes to the Cynthia Baldwin article because the changes (while obviously with good intent) also made significant changes that broke various formattings, and wikipedia standard, plus removed references and / or seemed to format them in some a-typical way. I have a created a copy of your article in your sandbox for you where you can practice making the changes (if you need my help let me know). Might I suggest you take a look at Wikipedia:Citing sources, Wikipedia:References dos and don'ts and probably most useful as it explains and links to many of the standard referencing formats Help:Referencing for beginners. Seperately, I note on the changes you have made you indicate that you have the Judge's permission. Do you have a relationship (personal, or business) with Cynthia Baldwin? Evening Huggylaw. Just be aware then of WP:CONFLICT. As per COI policy I have no intention to out yourself, but per the guidance on your COI editing is really something that should be avoided on wikipedia. However I am more than happy to look through the Sandbox and prompt where there are issues so that you can assist in resolving them on the main article. This may mean just providing full book names, or detail of the articles in question etc. Your sources / references while suitable elsewhere are just not the norm expected on wikipedia so may be challenged by a passing editor just because they cannot verify the information. Yes it's arcane. So for instance we generally avoid Ibid, but we have our own system of doing it so that you need only add the full reference once and then link to it using shorthand.

In terms of the formatting issues, if you take a look at this this section for instance you should see how your your attempt to format a list has resulted in a wall of text.

I think the first thing I will do to help is go through your sources in the Sandbox and try and duplicate them if I can from public record, and I will fix the formatting on your lists. We can then migrate parts over when they are complete. You can reply to me here from this point forwards unless any information you wish to share is confidential or personal in which case use email. I will send you my email address in reply to expedite any queries.

A few quick questions:

Is "Biography: The Honorable Cynthia Baldwin" a published book or is this related to https://www.thehistorymakers.org/? (if the latter can you provide a link to the article)
When you say "Biography used with permission of Justice Cynthia A. Baldwin" is this a published biography, or just personal information / journal?
When you say "Board of Directors - NACD". Three Rivers. This does not appear to match their current leadership page. This may be oversight on their part, but we would need a current reference for that. Koncorde (talk) 23:05, 11 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
