Repeat: Abandoned course at University of Southern California? And offer to help with sanitation-related articles

Hi User:Ian (Wiki Ed), I had put this on your talk page on 20 December but it was moved to the archive without an answer. So I am copying it again. If my question is not appropriate please let me know on my talk page. Otherwise, I'd love to see a response from you: Hi Ian, I come from the WikiProject Sanitation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Sanitation). I saw on the page on groundwater pollution that a student from this course: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wiki_Ed/University_of_Southern_California/Ecological_Factors_in_Design_(Spring_2016) was meant to work on that page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Groundwater_pollution). Seems like nothing has happened though (since February 2016). I couldn't figure out from the course page if the course was abandoned or if just this one student abandoned the assignment? Could you let me know and perhaps also say something on the course page about it? - I also have a question where to find good example pages of where university instructors have successfully involved their students in editing Wikipedia articles. Hi EvMsmile. Sorry about that - I saw your message and meant to get back to you, but it slipped my mind (and I missed it when I was archiving).

So the student who worked on groundwater pollution was BriManly, and they did end up making some edits. The course page actually has a link to the Wiki Ed Dashboard for the class, up in the top left. For this class, it's here. (Maintaining the education program extension wasn't on WMF's priorities, so we built our own. WMF now runs an implementation of it here; you can read more about it at meta:Programs & Events Dashboard.

As for compiling a more complete list - I should be able to put together a list of sanitation-related articles that students in courses that worked with us have done. I'll get back to you on that. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:28, 26 January 2017 (UTC)

Student project shortcuts

Hi Ian, I'm seeing students from Georgia trying to satisfy course requirements to tweak an article by (safely) padding the See Also section. I didn't look at the course and assume the assignment was to edit an article. If that's wrong, then egg on my face. But assuming that's whats going on.... Personally, I think that's short changing their own education, and sometimes (often?) amounts to litter rather than article imrpovement. I dislike having to do cleanup. Is that a common practice? What do you think of it? It can be hard, I suppose, judging a see also addition's relevance and import, so I do admit this is somewhat subjective and maybe I'm having a grumpy day. I don't plan to do anything more, just though I'd call this to your attention in the spirit of helping each other be better help to instructors. As they say on talk radio. Short answer is - I'm not sure why they're adding links, and I've been wondering about whether it's at the level where I should contact the instructor. Based on the class's timeline they should be collecting sources this week in their sandboxes, with the goal of adding them to unreferenced statements next week. My guess is that the subject came up somewhere - maybe in class discussion - which led to this flurry of additions.

Regardless of what's behind these edits, this is not what the instructor has in mind for the class. She wants them to make substantial improvements to articles, and she picked out a collection of fairly short articles for them to work on that have substantial scope for improvement. You can see them on the lower half of this page.

As for the educational value - I agree that there's little value in just adding a few links, but I think the goal here may be to get them started making some small edits. We used to support small assignments, where students just made a few copyedits or added a few sentences to an article, but we've moved away from that because we found that the benefits to Wikipedia were limited, and the potential for students to make poor edits, just to satisfy a grade, was too high. (We still support a handful of instructors who are doing smaller assignments, but these are people who know what they're doing and what it takes to have students add something meaningful in a small amount of time.) Taking a full semester to draft something does produce a much better chance of adding something that makes Wikipedia better (which is our primary goal). Cleaning my Sandbox and creating an article

I have used my sandbox for the entire class as a scratch pad, editing articles, practicing skills from training models etc. Now that I have a draft copy of my own original article how do I make that portion of draft into a published article. I tried to remove the extra stuff from my sandbox to move the article and saw a warning that spooked me and I did not move it. Please let me know how to publish my article, thanks. Questions before start editing

I'm a student editor for an article at my Environmental Public Health course and this is the first time for me to edit an article on Wikipedia. You'll make it easier for Ian to respond to you, if you can respond to a few questions: can you tell Ian:

• what learning modules or other prep you've done so far. For example, I see that Ian has left you some links in a Welcome message on your page; have you gone through the editing brochure yet?
• what specific article you are planning on editing. I see you've added yourself at Talk:Birth weight as a student editor; can one assume that the article Birth weight is the one you are planning to edit?
• what changes, in a very general sense, are you thinking of making to the article.

A good way to start, is what you are already doing: find an article, identify a need—something that is missing, or needs improvement; find some reliable references that address the need. I notice, for example, that the article mentions nothing about the Apgar score; you might want to read up on that, and see if it's worth adding a mention to the article.

Remember that each and every change to the article should have as a goal to improve the article in some way. So, keep that in mind. Do your edits in an incremental fashion, bit by bit, and use an edit summary for each one to explain the rationale for your change/addition/deletion. For anything you add, consider adding a citation to a reliable source to back it up. The citation templates ( {{cite book}}, {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}}, {{cite news}} ) will make this task easier. See also Help:Footnotes. @Jessicaatwiki: since the birth weight article isn't very well developed, I would probably start by thinking about what sort of additions you want to make. See if you can identify the most important missing information. That's probably a great place to start - you can work with your group member to draft the sections you want to add in your sandbox (or your partner's sandbox).

Adding a few sections or expanding some of the sections in the article would be a really nice improvement. Once you've done that, you can look at the lead section. Does it still do a good job of summarizing all the major points in the article, or does it need changing to reflect the improvements you've made? Look at the parts of the article you didn't touch. Article Evaluation

Yes, everything in the article is relevant in the article topic. Nothing needs to be added. The article focused on that biofilms are microbial cities and excrete an extracellular matrix. Some citations are older and not current, but the information is still true to modern science. Since it is a science article, I did not notice any bias considering it is all based on scientific facts. The only thing I would add would be that although they are not planktonic organisms, they still can break off and cause harm (for example, dental plaque can break off and that plaque floats into our bodies). I would include this in the introduction briefly just to preview it. The citations are cited correctly and are reliable to the article. There were a lot of edits done because medicine is always changing. Requesting help for citation

Hello there, I am wondering if you might be able to help me with a citation. I am receiving an error message on a citation I have found and have added to my sandbox due to the date being incomplete. There is no day listed for the publication, only the month and year. I have gone back to the original source and I cannot find the day anywhere. Is this citation still okay to use? I'm working on editing a page for one of my college courses. I had been working in my sandbox on editing and improving the article "HIV/AIDS in Honduras," but now when I try to access my sandbox I cannot access it, as another user has put a speedy deletion request on my page, and now everything is gone. Apparently the request was placed under G11 due to unambiguous advertising or promotion. I have so many questions. I have no idea how the information I had added could be considered advertising, and I am also confused how anyone was able to see my work when it was in my sandbox. I'm starting to think that maybe I had accidentally been editing within my Talk page (if that's even possible) due to the way I was routed when I clicked on the sandbox tab in my account. Can you provide any guidance as to what I should do? Should I contest the speedy deletion, and if I should, how do I go about doing so?

Acceptable sources

Hi Ian!

I just wanted to double check that I am totally understanding the types of articles I can cite in a Wikipedia article. I am looking at the following source:

Benninger, M. S., Holy, C. E., Bryson, P. C., & Milstein, C. F. (2017). Prevalence and Occupation of Patients Presenting With Dysphonia in the United States. Journal of Voice, 31(5), 594-600. doi:10.1016/j.jvoice.2017.01.011

I am thinking that I *can't* use this source because it isn't a meta-analysis, lit review, or in a textbook. The prevalence data in this study is based on a database search yielding results for 146.7 million people in the U.S.. My understanding is that I can't use this because the author was involved in the research process, but since the N is so large I wanted to double check before I strike this source from my list.

Help moving article from incorrect sandbox "UserTalk:mitchell.harpenau/sandbox-amfAR" to correct sandbox "UserTalk:mitchell.harpenau/sandbox"

Hello Ian,

In an attempt to move my article to the talk page of my sandbox rather than the User Page of my sandbox, I had to rename it "sandbox-amfAR" because it wouldn't let me move the article since it was already named "mitchell.harpenau/sandbox"...Now it's stuck in a sandbox that is not my own and I only am able to access it through redirects from my own sandbox (I can go to Sanbox -> Talk -> redirected to mitchell.harpenau/sandbox-amfAR -> click on User Page to access it. Whenever I try to move it again it comes up with an unspecified error, most likely because I'm trying to move the article that is named the same as the place I'm trying to move it.

Need help on editing article

Hello Ian,

I need some on editing article. I am editing the article assigned by Dr. Schade. What I did is:

1) Open the edit mode of article, then add my modification into it. 2) Publish changes to save my modification. 3) Add a brief description on what I changed.

However, when I open my sandbox, it is still empty. I don't want Dr. Schade to think I did nothing on our project. Would you please let me know what I should do?

Article Evaluation

I decided to choose Clinical Physiology article, because it is related to the Psychologist that my group and I decided to work on. Instructions on use of primary sources

Ian, I'm concerned that lecturers are continuing, year on year, to guide students on their courses towards citing everything to primary research sources, or at least to research without regard to whether it's primary or not. A recent example among many is Mimicry in vertebrates, where none of the students seem to have any inkling of the primary question.

Clearly, from the point of view of preparing science students, practice citing to other research papers is convenient training. If that's what it is, then there is a conflict of interest between that work and editing Wikipedia.

Whatever the cause, lecturers need clear guidance on the use of secondary sources (textbooks and review articles), with an explanation of why the Wikipedia policy is different from that in scientific research. In my view, lecturers who consistently fail to get this message across to their students should be suitably sanctioned. Chiswick Chap (talk) 09:46, 1 November 2018 (UTC)

@Chiswick Chap: It's something we actually stress in our training modules for students, and it's something I struggle with to find the right balance. A lot of people over-interpret that message, and believe that they can never cite something that isn't a tertiary source, while others seem to miss it entirely.

Looking at that biomimicry article, I'm inclined to think that the problem isn't so much about primary vs secondary sources as it is with trying to generalise from what are, in essence, single data points. I will definitely communicate this to the instructors in this course, but I think what I really need to do is to see to it that our training materials (both for students and instructors) are revised to communicate this. Well, perhaps, but primary sources are always single data points, and generalising from a cluster of such points is called WP:OR and perhaps also WP:SYNTH, both forbidden, so the solution is to use reliable secondary sources. The issue is certainly much wider than a single course; the article Ant mimicry is another egregious case of primary data-point overgeneralisation (I could give a long list of examples), i.e. WP:SYNTH: these things are just different descriptions of the same thing, I'm afraid. Working from reliable secondary or tertiary sources, from the outset, is the solution: one can't really spray quality back onto a SYNTH article; the whole approach needs to be undone and replaced with a decent structure that doesn't resemble a randomly assembled list of examples. I'm sure Ian has a life, too, so please give him and any other editor more advance notice if you need help; a couple of days at the very least, and more if you're able.

As for your edits to the article: bravo for adding citations to reliable sources. Your content addition could stand to have more wikilinks added; please read WP:LINK paying especial attention to the sections "What should be linked" and "What generally should not be linked". If you need to link something, but your word is an adjective or verb, say, and the article title is a noun, you can either use a piped link or a redirect. Also, I don't think chemical elements are capitalized in the middle of a sentence, but if you need guidance on that topic, see the Manual of Style on capitalization. Based on my team's discussion. We split the editing into 3 sections. Before, during and after pregnancy. My section is to focus on "drinking before pregnancy" but almost all systematic reviews I can find is focusing on drinking during pregnancy. This is the biggest obstacle for me. Personally I do think drinking before pregnancy is harmful too because half women get pregnancy before they know. In addition, I do find couple article said it takes longer to get conceiving for women who drinks. I do want to add these 2 points in the existing article but couldn't find any systematic reviews to be a good reference. Based on your feedback I should not add them due to the lack of high-quality reference. Correct? CDC suggests women who plan to get pregnant stop drinking as early as possible. Can I use it as the reference? I know there might be just one simple sentence but if this could cause the attention to the audience it might be still good to add?

assistance with inserting images

I am a student at Boston University School of Medicine, and I am developing a wiki page as part of a class I am enrolled in. I am having trouble inserting images. I know that you can search and insert images using Wikipedias archive of images that have no copyright issues, but even images that I know do not have copyrights on them (such as ones that I can just google image search or take from scientific literature and properly cite) I am unable to insert since they are not in Wikipedias system. Casino and HarvardOcDoc

Hi Ian,

It seems that this user has been given a course assignment that involves editing WP. He has edited just one page, as far as I can see, and my requests for him to summarise the content he has added have not led to very much.

I notice that you have offered to support HarvardOcDoc in his editing work, as a representative of Wiki Ed. I don't really know how Wiki Ed works; but I believe that students' work is meant to be supervised and approved by their instructors, and that both instructors and students benefit from some kind of mentoring from Wiki Ed staff.

So I wonder if you could look at Casino and Talk:Casino, and perhaps suggest how HarvardOcDoc might add some material to the article without loading it so heavily that it capsizes. Thought has just struck me: perhaps an article on Occupational Health in Casinos is the right place for the material?

Childbirth contribution taken down

Hi Ian,

My name is Morgan Ross and I am in a group with Andrew Matteucci (Amatteucci) and Ryan Spelman for our Wiki Ed project. We chose to contribute to the childbirth page in order to make it more culturally appropriate. For this we decided to make a new section called Alternative Birthing Practices in Non-Western Communities. This contribution was taken down within 24 hours, and so was another portion of our work in the location section. The man who took it down left a comment in AMatteucci's account along with a whole list of things that cannot be written on medical articles. Then it said "Ping me when you fix it." We were very confused as we did not think that either of our contributions violated these rules, and we were confused why it was taken down so fast. I have the content written below, but I was wondering if you could give us any advise as to what to do. We did not want to just repost it really quick because we did not want to start a wiki war. If you have any tips to help us, please let us know. Thank you very much!

Alternative Birthing Practices in Non-Western Communities In many underdeveloped civilizations there are multiple different views of childbirth that are different from the ways that Western Civilizations view childbirth. Many women in different civilizations treat pregnancy in a different manner than those in Western Civilizations would. For example, many women often continue to work in a similar function to how they normally would throughout pregnancy. In some cases, women will work right up until labor begins[5][6]. Comfort is something that people in uncivilized cultures embrace in their pregnancies. Home births can help to make childbirth more comfortable for the mother as she is in her own home with her family around her helping out in different ways[5]. It is also rare in indigenous cultures for the mother to lie down during pregnancy. Instead, they often opt for standing, kneeling, or walking around prior to and during birthing[5][6]. People in Non Western societies also rely heavily on religion for their birthing practices. It is believed that if certain acts are carried out, then it will allow the child for a healthier and happier future[5]. One example of this is the belief that if scissors are used for cutting the umbilical cord, it will cause for the child to go through clothes very quickly. In order to prevent this, a jagged ceramic tile is used to cut the umbilical cord[6]. @22mross, Amatteucci, and Rms1020:

The first problems that jumps out to me are your choice of language and the vague sweeping generalizations you make:

• In many underdeveloped civilizations there are multiple different views of childbirth that are different from the ways that Western Civilizations view childbirth.

• • What's an "underdeveloped civilization"? For starters, if you speak of modern civilizations, you need to consider that the term has multiple meanings, from Samuel P. Huntington's view of nine civilizations (which is controversial) to the (also controversial) idea that we are in a planetary phase of civilization. You need to be precise, and you need to make sure that you aren't speaking in Wikipedia's voice. Wikipedia can't take a position on a controversial topic like this. Your source might, but if that case, you need to make sure that you're being clear that this is your source's opinion.
  • What do you mean by "many"? How is "multiple different views" something specific to whomever you're taking about? There are multiple different views in any society.
  • Western societies also don't have a single view. In addition, having not defined who you're speaking about, this is hopelessly vague.
• People in Non Western societies also rely heavily on religion for their birthing practices.
  • Again, what does this mean? Are you saying that people in Japan or Russia rely more on religion than the US? I'm skeptical.

These problems pervade the entire piece. This isn't suitable for Wikipedia - you can't generalize broadly about, well, most of the world. In addition to that, there are problems when it comes to medical sourcing. Medical content needs to be sourced to high-quality references. Please take a look at the links that were left for you. Hi Ian, I noticed some edits from a student editor and noticed you were listed as involved with the course. The article in question is The Live Love Laugh Foundation and these are the edits I noticed. The edits look problematic to me (basically rehashing the organization's website, and including the disclaimer "This information was taken from their website and can’t be independently verified.") I certainly don't want to WP:BITE a new student editor, and I don't have a ton of time to walk this editor through issues with primary/self-published sourcing, promotionalism, etc., so I thought I'd reach out to you and see what you'd recommend.
