Perth Wetlands

I agree with Moondyne - an excellent start - well done!

Ok some very small issues.

Over-usage of online refs - where is Seddon and Ravine, the Anthro and archaeo stuf on Mt eliza? Looks good - but there are many textual sources that would give it an extra punch.
List of features needs a hell of lot of corroboration with cites and or general refs.
CBD lakes need to be separated - the usual colloquial stuff about the pumps at the boans basement for 20 years etc
Nature - wow that is a good start, and the strength of the article
Known by aboriginals - gotta be more specific which ref youre getting that from - claims to authority amongst archaeo/anthro/historian are at least 4 beers or 5 coffee long if you wanna know (if you dont already)
Map has 'Sawn River' at Perth Water point

I have the Perth Water map with all the aboriginal names for all the features - god only knows where it is though, bless her... If you can start articles like that - it would be almost worth having a Perth meetup just to meet you and compare sources/sauces/whatever - cheers - btw - thanks for asking - please feel free to contact offline if you wanna find out about some of the archaeo/anthro stuff i could pdf and email for you if you wanted Satu Suro 15:09, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

A lot of the features are in articles that are inadequate in identifying their locality - 'Perth, Western Australia' is probably too much wikitravel for my liking - I really think the use of a standard road map and making sure it is in within specific current known locality and linked or even creating cats for the locality - even if there are only a few things to link (the populate cat feaks seem to be long gone these days) - Hyde Park (i dont have the road map in my office at this time of night) i was sure is Highgate - and should be identified - imho - I know coords can help - but the lists of features I really think should have qualification as to which position they are in as many ways possible - from my way of thinking - btw if you dont have a copy of Ravine and Seddon - you need one :) Satu Suro 15:20, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the input. There's still a lot of stuff I'd like to put into the article - I've basically only used web sources - the Town of Vincent has put a lot of historical info on the web - so any book sources would be appreciated, particularly if they go into more detail. I found a great online report (here) called A Brief (it's actually 70 pages!) History of Smith's Lake by Sally Lake, which contains a topographical map of the area around the CBD which Aboriginal names attached, as well as the wetlands.

It would be great if there was an equivalent modern-day map of Perth with which I could overlay that map to provide more clarification. I'll try and put in some more coords for locations. Perhaps some photos of present-day Herdsman or Hyde Park wouldn't go amiss either. Once again, thanks for the input. Ignorant Armie s 08:40, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

(1) re template: I suppose the thing is very careful when following newly made templates by new users - worth always checking for duplicates/parallel universes.
(2) the Kalgoorlie Boulder Big City stuff is it has been a regular every 2 years or so someone comes in outta nowhere and starts it up again - the history should show it there

Photothèque

Hi IgnorantArmies. I must say that for a relevant newbie, you seem to be getting on like a house on fire. I was impressed with your recent article on the Perth Wetlands. But I was nevertheless just a bit surprised that you moved Photothèque (Luxembourg) to straight Photothèque. While I agree that there is no article in the English WP on Photothèque, I think it would be preferable to leave the space open for anyone to write an article on the concept of Photothèque itself. It may be a rather French was of seeing things but it is related to Bibliothèque (library) and Discothèque (a library of discs). The French WP actually has an entry on Photothèque although for the time being it redirects to Banque d'images. You will also find Fototeca in Spanish. Indeed, if you look here, you'll see the term Fototheque has even reached Australia! If you agree with this reasoning, you might like to move the article back to Photothèque (Luxembourg) which, for me, also gives a better indication of what it is all about. Have fun! Hello, thanks for the input. I moved the page as I thought it was an unnecessary disambiguation – I couldn't find any other photothèques that rated more than a passing mention. However, I see what you mean with what you wrote above - photothèque basically translates to "photo library", I think, which is pretty ambiguous. I know if there was a page just called "Photo Library" I'd probably think about moving it to something more specific. I'll move it back. Just wondering, have you thought about 'transferring' this and other Luxembourg articles into say, French or German. I'm not sure how fluent or comfortable you are contributing in these languages, but just a thought. Thanks for reverting the move. I am in fact fluent in both French and German and have a good passive understanding of Luxembourgish or Lëtzebuergesch, the language of Luxembourg. Unfortunately the language is not understood outside the Grand Duchy which is one of the reasons why I have written a considerable number of articles about Luxembourg in the English WP. I am rather curious about how you came across the Photothèque article. Do you have a particular interest in Luxembourg or was it entirely accidental? - Ipigott (talk) 10:06, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Funnily enough, through cricket! I saw Pierre Werner Cricket Ground (the only cricket ground in Luxembourg, if sources are to be believed) had been nominated for deletion (I've tidied it up a bit, and taken off the deletion template). I think I must have gone to a buildings and structures in Luxembourg category or something, and it caught my attention. I've always had an interest in small-ish states. Midland Junction

Hey mate, thanks for the copy-edit of Midland Junction Football Club, much appreciated. Only problem is there is now some inconsistency between using WAFA and WAFL. As a Victorian, my knowledge of the WAFL is fairly limited, but according to our article the name change from WAFA to WAFL occurred in 1908, during the time Midland Junction were in the league. To add confusion, the league that they played in originally, the First Rate Junior Association, seems to have renamed itself the WAFA when the WAFA changed to the WAFL. Perhaps I should add a footnote trying to explain all this. In any case, it would be greatly appreciated if you could have a crack at clarifying this in the article. So, if I can't call it vandalism, what do I call it, and what approach do I use, when an editor insists on repeating a change that he has never explained or justified, and has been asked to discuss, and won't do so? I certainly didn't want an Edit war, and thought it sensible to hear your justification for your position away from the article itself. Nothing else seemed to work. Hi, please stop adding the unnecessary colour to AFL club navboxes. The consensus at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject AFL/Archive 5#Our garish colourful navboxes was that only the titlestyle should be coloured to maintain readability. Fremantle FC, Mk I and II.

Nice work on the Unions/Fremantle articles, but I wonder if the Unions page should really be at Fremantle Football Club (1890s) or something similar, as they only competed as Unions for 4 years, but Fremantle for 10. I'll have a look around other sports and maybe ask at WP:AWNB, WT:AFL or WT:WA for opinions. It's a fairly difficult situation (and one that the WAFL actually got wrong for many years until Dave Clement found the Union-Freo link in the 1970s. I've got a copy of Geoff Christian's book 'The Footballers' that summarises this era fairly well, so that, coupled with the original newspapers from the era on Trove, should enable us to get up a really good article. have you thought about nominating it for a WP:DYK? Thanks for the extra references – I've basically only used Full Points Footy for both clubs, and it'd be great to have other sources, particularly contemporary ones. The name of the football club is a tricky issue, as both were formed in the same year (1882). I chose Unions as the name as I couldn't think of another way to disambiguate the two. The previous state of categories for people born in WA was atrocious: it was either lump into the People from Western Australia cat, leave it uncategorised, or (worst-case) lump people from country towns into the Perth category! I've started putting the project tags on the categories, and I think most are done by now. Might have to get an admin to change the Kimberley one - sorry about that - but I think the rest are pretty much consistent and unambiguous. Good work on the Mr Ward article, we'll probably have to see how that pans out. I'm not willing to unlist it but I wouldn't be too fussed if it stayed. Ignorant Armies^?!

I think you might be going overboard with the Perth suburb ones though - I mean half of Perth are people from Subiaco if you consider SJOG and King Edward hospitals! WP:OVERCAT might say something about it, but given how people move around, I really think they should be deleted and moved up into People from Perth. Do we classify them on birth/home as a kid/primary school/high school/univ/current house... etc etc? It would be a nightmare, and almost impossible to reference. Country towns or regions is better, but people are mobile, so it is always an issue for some people.The-Pope (talk) 16:18, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

I agree with The Pope re over-cat - be very careful about that, people from Perth is a much more considered approach (ie better idea).

Re the Mr Ward afd - I'm not willing to unlist it but I wouldn't be too fussed if it stayed. just remember to know what to do when the writing is on the wall, if you enjoy wp be prepared to know when to let go or walk away from things :). further = in the old days you would have been severely chastised for creating sub cats for localities where the region would do - in the current editing climate of wp - it is unlikely you would ever meet the category population target for a lot of them that you have created - 20 + was considered the mimina for a category not to be put up for deletion - people from wubin or mullewa is very unlikely to be populated by 20+ individuals - and should not be created - stay with the wheatbelt Satu Suro 03:32, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Looking back now, the Perth suburb ones are very unnecessary - a mistake on my part, I see what you mean with the hospitals. A possible exception could be made for semi-independent regional centres: in my mind, Joondalup/Wanneroo, Armadale/Gosnells, Fremantle, Rockingham, Kwinana, Midland/Guildford, although it would be hard to draw a line for some of those categories.

In regards to the country-town categories, I think most of them are necessary - right now, I think three or four people in a category for a small country town is pretty good, and the others can just be placed into the generic regional category, like you said above. I've done the same with people born on homesteads, just grouping into regional categories. There is a huge potential for expansion - there are hundreds of inherently notable politicians, sportsmen, etc. without articles, and you'd think around a quarter of them were from country towns.

Re. the Mr Ward article (perhaps change to Death of Ian Ward?), I you and other editors have done a good job improving the article, although the references still need some improving. I think the the AfD won't pass, so you probably don't have to worry about that. (by the way, I noticed you created Category:Prisoners who died in Western Australian detetion [sic]. Agreed totally with your change, but don't be surprised if someone changes it back - I made the same change about two years ago (-ums to -a) with some standard being quoted as to why a composite plural was being used. Middle names

I found a great source (here) which details every WAFL premiership from 1931–2007 (1049 in all!), which includes middle names (if they have one), junior clubs, date of birth and games and goals kicked. Collingwood minor premiership

Hey IgnorantArmies, Can you please not remove Collingwood as the minor premiers as you did here [1]. They basically secure the minor premiership and McClelland Trophy since Geelong lost to Sydney today. There is no way that Geelong can get the minor premiership now. I understand the fact that Wikipedia isn't a crystal ball, however mathematical Collingwood has won the minor premiership as they only lost ONE match to Geelong's THREE (Including Today's against Sydney). I doesn't matter if Collingwood win, lose or draw with Geelong next week because Collingwood has 80 points while Geelong has 72 points. As you know each win is worth 4 points so Collingwood are definitively this year's minor premiers! So please DON'T remove Collingwood as minor premiers from this year's AFL season. I wasn't aware that the pre WW1 period was known as the Golden Age in Australian and American cricket, as well as in English cricket. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion.
