Note about UFC pages[edit]

Ivan, I checked the UFC 59 article and saw the changes you made. Yes, I was the person to link the article to the MMA Weekly website, but was not aware that the site's articles would change URLs. Someone has edited (reverted) the article back to the previous version, thinking that you were instead promoting your blog when you switched the links. If you believe that fighter salaries will enhance the article, then you could put them under an "External Links" section. Even then, some people might question the relevance of the source and might delete it. If you have any more questions, I suggest you contact Hateless, who is a part of the Wikipedia Mixed Martial Arts project. While I am a regular contributor on Wikipedia, most of my edits are very crude, and I know very little about Wikipedia's structure; as you can see, I havn't even made a user page. With the growing popularity of the UFC, more and more Wikipedia veterans are editing UFC articles. I suppose they will know best. -- Wyldephang July 20, 2006

Re: UFC pages[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wikipedia - yes that is a good point - as we do link to MMAWeekly and Sherdog articles often as sources here. As Wyldephang mentioned above, people may question the source as unreliable if it is www.___blog.com, or anything of a "personal site" nature. But, any and all sources are apreciated - information on Wikipedia must have(or is supposed to have) verifiable sources, so feel free to add any off site source links, and be sure to check out Wikipedia:Citing_sources for details.

Sources can be posted a few ways, but I find the easiest (in article) posting is to use a [ and follow it with the link, followed by a ] - which would look like this:

UFC 60 drew an estimated 600,000 pay per view buys. [1]

For a general "reference" link, such as Sherdog event stats, or fighter record page, use the "External links" section at the bottom of pages, with a [ followed by the link, then a space, and then the name of the link (aka "Sherdog.com Event Stats") followed by another ] - to look somthing like this:

Also, when leaving comments on User Talk pages, be sure to sign every comment with four tildes (~~~~) which will leave you username, and a time stamp, so others can respond to your comments. It also might be helpful to create a User Page with some info about yourself and your association with MMAWeekly.

And lastly, I urge you to check out Wikipedia:WikiProject Mixed martial arts, and if interested, add your name to the list of participants, and add the Project MMA infobox to your userpage by adding: {{User_WikiProject_Mixed_Martial_Arts}}

Again, welcome to the community!

Hi Ivan, great to see you around. Personally, I've seen the articles you wrote for MMAWeekly, esp the analysis pieces on UFC buys/gates/revenues was quite good and some of the best investigative journalism work I've seen on MMA, on par with Meltzer's work. Skeletor's simple linking method of sourcing works fine, but if you're interested, in the future Wikipedia as a whole is moving onto a more formal referencing scheme using automated footnotes, see Wikipedia:Footnotes. For instance, the UFC article currently uses them, but not all UFC-related pages are up to par as of yet. They're simply MLA or Harvard style citations enclosed within <ref> tags, and will show up automatically within a footnoes section on a page. Again, welcome, and its great to see someone of your caliber having a hand in WP. hateless 05:55, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
