Welcome!

Hello, Jaffer, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome!  --Kf4bdy 18:34, 12 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Anyway, I wanted to add a video clip from the great classic TV series "You Are There" on George Washington. This is a recreation of Washington's Farewell Address to the troops. I have permission to do this from the copyright holder, as I do for all of the video clips I am linking to. I could not add a link to the George Washington article due to me being a "newbie". How can I get permission to do this? (asked at HelpDesk-l)

That article has been semi-protected because of a serious vandalism problem. You'll be able to edit such articles 4 days after you've created your account. Alternately you can ask for the link to be added by placing a request on the article's talk page, but I'm not sure others will agree that a video of a recreation should be in the article. -- Jeandré, 2006-01-13t11:54z

"(top)" contributions.

[edit]

Also, I looked at "my contributions" and what does "top" mean? I do not add links to the top of the section unless I believe it makes sense. Some links say "top" when I did not add them to the top. Is this an editing term I am not familiar with? (asked at HelpDesk-l)

This means that you have made the last edit to this article, your edit is "on top". -- Jeandré, 2006-01-13t11:54z

I spoke with another administrator (Community Weather I think) and explained that I am 50 years old and have been in the footage business for 20 years. I love editing these articles and adding LEGAL clips to it. EVTV1 is a commercial site like imdb is, which sold to Amazon.com for over $100 million and sells advertising on its site.

I love Wikipedia and would not do anything to harm it or compromise it. I am only linking to APPROPRIATE video clips that are 100% legal and cleared. Yes, there is a :15 commercial before the clip, but it does not seem too much to exclude the great footage.

Please advise because I will stop as I told the other Admin, but I would like t continue and hopefully one day become an admin. If you want to reach me by phone, I can be reached at 708-478-4500 ext.105 or Jaffer@gopherCentral.com.

Thank you so much. The other Admin suggested that I post my comment to him on some forum, but I could not find it...I am new to the Wiki editing experience, but long time reader.

Thank you.

Jaffer

If there are 15 second ads in the clips I think most editors will delete the links. The difference to linking to a page with written information like at IMDb is that their ads are easily blocked with browsers, they're not intrusive, and users are not forced to view them when reading the written info. -- Jeandré, 2006-01-15t09:58z
Re [1]. The volunteers who edit and watch the specific pages are the best people to ask whether the links should be included. See Wikipedia:External links#What should not be linked to.
If no concensus can be reached on the articles' talk pages, see Wikipedia:Dispute resolution#Further dispute resolution. -- Jeandré, 2006-01-15t13:42z
Re [2]. Some editors may find that a conflict of interest outweighs the value, tho I think it should have more to do with the value the links add to the encyclopedia than who adds the links. Writing a good encyclopedia is the important thing. If there is consensus on the value, other users will put the links back.
The second point is also best debated with the people who are the regular editors, on the article talk pages. Inclusion may therefore differ per article. -- Jeandré, 2006-01-15t14:34z

Please stop. If you continue to use Wikipedia for advertising, you will be blocked from editing. -- GraemeL (talk) 22:47, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok....I stopped

[edit]

Folks,

I understand that the appearance of a conflict of interest is too great to fight. I think that video links is a great idea, but will not do this any more. When I use Wiki in the future, I will suggest to one of the editors who has "adopted" an article if THEY think the video is appropriate and give THEM the link.

I will try to create a higher level working relationship with Wiki. I thank everyone for your thoughtful criticisms and I have taken them to heart.

Regards, Jaffer

Shirley Temple

[edit]

My point of view is that the Wikipedia entry should explain why Shirley Temple was unique and important. My point of view might be quite different than yours because I live in Palo Alto, California, which is about 5 miles from where Mrs. Temple-Black lives now. I have never met her, but I konw other people who have seen her. I would prefer that her 10-year film career and the other 50 years of her life get about equal time, but I am probably POV on that because I think that, while she it still alive, one should atttempt to acknowledge that she was an adult for most of the time.

My point of view on this is that what made Shirley Temple successful was that:

  • She could memorize entire scripts in one or two readings
  • She could learn very complicated dance steps and perform them as well as any adult
  • She could act. She could cry on cue. She showed up for work. She was not a difficult star to work with.
  • Once the studios realized that they had a child star who could sign and dance and act as well as any adult, they proceeded to bang out as many movies as they could with her, and most of those movies are pretty good.

BTW: I have sat through many ST videos with my own daughter.

I do not find that your videos do not really try to explain why Shirley Templte was so successful, but I suppose that they are better than nothing, but please see to it that they do not take up much room on the page. I would tend to leave the birthday one out because it is just a media stunt, but no big deal if it goes in. -- Pinktulip 20:08, 21 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
