Thanks for uploading File:Weber.jpeg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

ForeFlight page

I am a founder of the company (Jason) and thought wikipedia would be a good place to capture some of the history of the company. However my recent edits were removed for being "spammy" - what changes would be helpful to prevent my updates from getting killed? Millz311 (talk) 15:21, 12 July 2023 (UTC)

In that case, you really shouldn't be making any edits to that page at all as you have a clear conflict of interest. I've left more information about this on your talk page about this. What you added sounds like an advertisement or something that would be found on ForeFlight's website. It's promotional and not encyclopedic. Finally every article on Wikipedia should have every statement backed up by reliable sources. None of what you added was sourced. If you have suggestions for the article, you can make them on the talk page. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 17:32, 12 July 2023 (UTC)

I tried to make sure that the photo was not copywritten, I thought that because it was from Commons, that it was okay to use, IDK. It was a mistake, I just thought the top photo should fit in with the rest of the characters. MrCboY1997 (talk) 20:10, 23 August 2023 (UTC)

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Living in Knoxville matters how? Does that limit what articles I can contribute to or not? Does the use of 49 citations to a website (newspaper or other) make it automatically notable? The answer to both is "no." Anyway, the crux of the issue is that you don't apparently understand why claiming a newspaper is notable (or even worth mentioning) while sourcing it to itself is an issue, then I don't know what to tell you. Of course, now you went overboard, but whatever. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 04:29, 4 September 2023 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for your help at Frank Sinatra and Michelle Pfeiffer. Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:27, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

Edit Warring

Hi, I have simple question that nobody ever answers. What's the best way to win an edit-war. First of all, during edit wars both sides have justification whether it be passion or bureaucracy or whatever. Most of time it's just users who don't know that they're talking about or trying to keep things the same. What's the best way to win an edit war, I know that trying to keep undoing edits makes both sides look bad. So how do you win professionally and put a stop to the stupidity of both sides? UnboundBeartic (talk) 23:54, 26 December 2023 (UTC)

The actual answer that you may not like but is the reality of the situation is the edit wars are decided by which admin intervening favors X or Y opinion. There is blatant abuse of policing from wikipedia admins allowing people to edit as they wish with no concensus as long as they agree with their edits. But if they don't agree with you then be prepared to have to follow all the rules to a T and eventually concede in the talk page if the other person refuses to yield. ChaimRosenberg222 (talk) 01:09, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
First of all, there's no "winning" of an edit war. Your best bet is to avoid edit warring entirely. You can always seek dispute resolution. And, ChaimRosenberg222 is completely wrong. Admins don't make content decisions; we only make conduct decisions. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 03:39, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
