E Malan and Associates (EMA)[edit]

E. Malan and Associates CC (also referred to as EMA) is a South African Accounting firm which opened its doors in 1979 by Johannes Andries Malan. He started the practice after securing clientele after a buyout transaction with Mr Norman Aikman. Initially Mr Malan operated from home, based in Roodepoort, and was assisted by his wife. In 1980 his son, Leon Malan, joined him from Cape Town on a full time basis. Leon was employed as financial manager by Racec at the time but realised that this would be the oppurtunatity for him to excell in private practice. With the growth of the company it also meant that it needed to move to offices in the CBD of Roodepoort.

Again after consistant growth during a economical vibrant time in South Africa the company needed to expand its capacity. On 1 October 1983 Eugene Malan joined the company as a junior accountant. The combination of Leon's knowledge and Eugene's ability to liaise withnthe clients the company went from strenght to strenght. For the next few years the two brothers operated alone while Leon's wife, Letitia, acted as their assistant. Besides the immediate family, one of the company's longest standing employees was also employed in 1983. Francina Maloi is still employed by the company today and will celebrate her 30 year career with the company in 1st of July 2013.

In 1987 the company was approached by Pieter Meiring and Syd Radford who succeeded in making an offer for the business. Leon decided that he wanted to take a sabbatical while Eugene decided to move to Cape Town. Within a month the two new partners offered Eugene a position within the company which he decided to take. He soon realized that the company was not going to be successful under the leadership of the two new partners and made them an offer to purchase back 37% of the clientele. This was the beginning of E Malan and Associates.

For the next decade the company would grow from 2 to over 30 staff. Leon came back as 50% partner in 1989. Tersia Jacobs, who is today a partner, joined the company in 1990 together with Maria Atougiua. Later on Maria would also become a partner from 2005 until 2011 when she decided to break away and operate alone. During this 90's a number of staff joined and are currently still in the employment of the company. Staff such as Margarat Motsamai, Ronel Fouche and Cathy Kinnear.

With the turn of the millennium another opportunity arose. Mike van Vuuren, a very good friend of Eugene, approached the company with a view of joining the company. It

From 1987 to 1989 Eugene Malan ran the business, growing and expanding the business to a bigger staff base and a bigger clientele base. Although it was a successful company, EMA would still be a small business in South Africa. In 1989 EMA would see the return of Leon Malan to the company and becoming partners with Eugene Malan.

In 1990 EMA would see the employment of two future Partners, Tersia Jacobs (1 January 1990) and Maria Atouguia(1 April 1990).

From 1989 to 2000, EMA would see tremendous growth, not only within the business staff but also with clientele. The business grew tremendously in value and become one of South Africa's biggest Accounting Firms. In the year of 2000 EMA would see Michael Van Vuuren, a Long life friend, fellow accountant and Business friend to Eugene, join Leon and Eugene to be become a partner.

December 2002 would see Eugene Malan Leave Johannesburg to expand EMA in Cape Town. Although with only a few staff and a couple of clientele, EMA was on its way to becoming an even bigger and more successful firm.

After 21 years with EMA Leon Malan would the Leave the firm on the 28th February 2002. Leaving Eugene and Michael as the two partners of EMA.

After fourteen years of working for EMA Maria Antouguia would join Michael and Eugene in becoming a partner on the 1st September 2004. A year Later Tersia Jacobs would then join Maria, Michael and Eugene in becoming the fourth partner in EMA on the 1st April 2005. In November 2006 EMA would see the resignation of Michael Van Vuuren as he would then move on to live in Plettenberg Bay.

Due to the success of the Cape Town branch, Eugene would then open another branch in Tygervalley which is managed by Jaco Mienie in 2007. In 2008 the Johannesburg branch split into the Randburg Branch and Roodepoort Branch. In January 2009 EMA would open their fifth branch in Rustenburg but would soon see the closing of it in December 2009 due to operational issues.

On the 28th February 2011, after twenty-one years, Maria Antouguia would then leave EMA, acquiring the Randburg branch.
