Re: Green Sahara (or African humid period)

Whatever the article is called. Contact me if you ever get this article to where you might nominate it for FA. Years ago my father travelled to Western Sudan where he encountered a part of the Sahara. (Okay, maybe it was some random bit of desert stay with me here.) A shower had recently passed thru & the sand dunes were the uncharacteristic color of green! In response to moisture, vegetation had sprouted all over. Being an otherwise naive sort from the US, of course he had to take photos of this phenomena. (And he has a number of others from his visits to Africa.) I've been meaning to scan his slides of this scene -- as well as some of his other hundreds of photographs he has taken over the years, since 1960 or so -- & share them. A ping from you might just be the nudge I need to start on this. -- llywrch (talk) 19:56, 16 April 2020 (UTC)

@Llywrch: Thanks for the offer. I've been rewriting the article section-by-section, mostly to remove odd word choices, overlong statements and unresolved issues and got until "Flora and fauna of the Sahara". There are also some unresolved questions, such as whether to employ any of the sources listed in the box on Talk:African humid period and whether the Green Sahara redirect would work better as a dedicated article.

This is going to be a bit hard to send to FAC, though. As you can see, it was up for peer review and there were some cautionary comments by Dunkleosteus77, SandyGeorgia and Ceoil. I am inclined to disagree with many of them - aside from the workload and structure issues with any splitting, this is an event article like World War II not an epoch article like Jurassic so a description of how Africa looked like before the AHP is necessary, and AHP is a topic principally discussed in academic papers not textbooks and they wouldn't be comprehensive either - but that's my opinion.

However, I think that a steady improvement of the article can happen even w/o a FAC so any help would be appreciated. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 11:30, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

Got as far as "Other parts of Africa and the rainforest realm" which however can probably be improved still. Continuing on the above theme, I wonder what the maximum reasonable size of a FAC would be ... for reviewers rather than rules of thumb. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 20:55, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
Butting in, I think the article size is about right at the moment, for such a major change to such a geographically large region. Anyway, its not as if we are forcing every reader to go through it all from top to bottom, outside of review processes, most wiki readers will find it looking for specific info, and use either the TOC or ctl/f to get to where they want. I dont see any scope for spinning out in whats there at the moment, although a small amout of paras are listy. Ceoil (talk)
ps; have been following this from the start, and am confident it will eventually get to a successful FAC. I'm using edits summaries rather than talk bullets to give feedback, because am a bit scattered at the moment. This has the potential to be one of the most impressive candidates at FAC in quite a while. Ceoil (talk) 21:24, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the expression of optimism/support, Ceoil. I've seen your edits, they seem good to me although I've done some modifications ... I've put my explanations in the edit summaries. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 10:18, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
Yes, saw. Ceoil (talk) 10:52, 18 April 2020 (UTC)

Your Deletion of DahliaOS

Hi I noticed you deleted the article DahliaOS and set it as a redirect to FuchsiaOS. I believe this might be a mistake since FuchsiaOS is a separate project from DahliaOS and Dahlia is a separate project. The article appears to have been created in its infancy. Could I request a un-deletion pending expanding the article to contain current information? Nobody5050 (talk) 04:36, 18 April 2020 (UTC)

Greetings. The decision was taken here; nothing was actually deleted and you can see the text in the [[1]]. I don't know about whether the redirect target is correct, but I don't think that you should expand the redirect again unless you can address the WP:NSOFT issue. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 09:13, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
Hi, thank you for the quick reply. Following reading WP:NSOFT I realize the software is not truly notable, I still believe the redirect could be much better purposed redirecting to List_of_operating_systems since the fuchsia page does not contain any info about dahlia. Nobody5050 (talk) 15:47, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
@Nobody5050: The consensus on a redirect target was not very strong; I take that if you have a good reason, you could change the redirect target. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 16:40, 18 April 2020 (UTC)

Alright I will, thanks! Nobody5050 (talk) 18:22, 18 April 2020 (UTC)

Hi Jo-Jo. Since you're involved in the discussion at WT:NFCC#Requiring non-free content to indicate that in their filenames and that discussion has to do with shadowing, perhaps you can sort this file out. It's not really shadowing Commons per se, only an older version is. The most recent version of the file seems sufficiently different enough from the previous ones so that it probably would've been better to upload it as a separate file and not as an "updated version" and on Commons this kind of thing would most likely be seen as not OK per c:COM:OVERWRITE. In addition, the Commons file might actually be a bit iffy per c:COM:TOO United Kingdom which means it might need to be discussed at c:COM:DR. Anyway, perhaps it's possible split the local file and rename each to stop the shadowing. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:38, 19 April 2020 (UTC)

Greetings, Marchjuly. I've processed this during my big cleanout of Category:Wikipedia files that shadow a file on Wikimedia Commons by splitting the file into File:BBC Alba (older version).svg and File:BBC Alba (new).svg. I dunno about the TOO; does this star look stylized enough? I agree that a deletion request should be filed on Commons. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 09:31, 19 April 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for taking a look. It might be OK for Commons, but there’s no need for a local file on Wikipedia, particularly one licensed as {{PD-ineligible-USonly}}, if it is. — Marchjuly (talk) 11:48, 19 April 2020 (UTC)
@Marchjuly:Well, the local file is necessary if it turns out that the Commons file is copyrighted. In fact, I'll be writing that DR now. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 12:15, 19 April 2020 (UTC)

Black Flames

Hi there! I should have approached you first about this, so I apologize for that. You closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Black Flames as delete last year because consensus found that there were no sources to allow it to meet notability. I found one source and moved it to draft space. Would you object to me moving it back to article space to merge the RS review into another article? BOZ (talk) 04:40, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

Greetings, BOZ. I'll admit, to my understanding a single RS is not generally enough to establish notability so I wouldn't move it to mainspace just yet. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 12:07, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
Oh right, no, I didn't mean that I would be moving it back to keep as an article with only the one source, but rather that I would be moving it back to perform a merge and redirect so that the review can be preserved. I'm going to see if we can find at least one more RS, but assuming we can't, would it be OK to do the merge and redirect? BOZ (talk) 12:12, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
Eh, I don't think you'd need a redirect for this. Just add the source to the redirect target. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 12:22, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

This relates to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ashlee Nyathi, right? However, in light of User_talk:Ohnoitsjamie#Zimbabwean young entrepreneur Ashlee Nyathi and comments by Ohnoitsjamie it doesn't seem like they meet notability criteria yet. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 14:03, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

Hi again Jo-Jo. This is another file that’s going to need an admin to sort out. Someone overwrote an existing non-free image of a book cover with a similar image and then relicensed the photo as PD. Whether the original version was non-free because of the cover’s design complexity or because it was a copyrighted photo of the book taken from somewhere is a bit unclear, but the file probably shouldn’t have been overwritten like this and the new version should’ve been uploaded as a separate file instead. If this file contains an unused non-free version, it cannot really be moved to Commons; moreover, if the original version is non-free, it can’t be kept per WP:F5. I think the file was updated in good faith, but the person who did so just didn’t realize that they might have created some new problems that need to be resolved. — Marchjuly (talk) 21:01, 20 April 2020 (UTC)

Greetings, @Marchjuly:. I've split the file and sent one version to FFD to get the copyright question cleared up; perhaps some additional notifications will be needed.

Sometimes I wonder if one could have a bot or report that tags local free files with more than one version in the history, as sometimes they require some kind of splitting. The problem is that "sometimes", as it's not always a problem if there are more than one version of a file in the history - compare the first and second versions of File:Salt Water (2515735668).jpg (OK, that's on Commons, but the principle is the same). It could be useful nevertheless - I wonder what our file-related botops @GreenC and Fastily: think of this. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 12:04, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

Jo-Jo, is there something a bot could check to see if there is a non-free version in the picture history? -- GreenC 13:25, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
Not really, that would require a human. A bot can only check if there is more than one version and perhaps compile a report or add a {{File with older versions}} tracking template to the file, so that humans can check if anything has to be done about it. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 13:43, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
Wish I could see an example (on enwiki). I seem to recall there is already a bot that removes older versions of a File when the File is Fair Use, but could be wrong. I may be thinking of the bot that creates a lower-res version then deletes the original version. -- GreenC 15:59, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
Aye, but the musing I had here is about whether tagging free files with more than one version is desirable. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 16:04, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
Roughly would it be possible to estimate how many like that might exist? 100s / 1000s / 10,000s ? -- GreenC 16:14, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
That's a good question. I'll see if WP:VPT has a way to answer this question. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 16:20, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
So, it seems like it's about 25000 and most of them would be false positives ... probably not a good idea to turn this into a tagging job, then. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 09:02, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

A possible solution: for each File in the query, go through every page revision looking for a {{Non-free use rationale logo}} such as here. If found, do a API:Imageinfo with iilimit=500 (max) for example:

Extended content
wget -q -O- 'https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&titles=File:111%20logo%20November%202015.png&prop=imageinfo&format=json&iilimit=500' | jq .
{
  "batchcomplete": "",
  "query": {
    "pages": {
      "48437969": {
        "pageid": 48437969,
        "ns": 6,
        "title": "File:111 logo November 2015.png",
        "imagerepository": "local",
        "imageinfo": [
          {
            "timestamp": "2017-03-05T04:39:11Z",
            "user": "Gibbsyspin"
          },
          {
            "timestamp": "2015-11-02T03:41:27Z",
            "user": "Heyitsstevo"
          },
          {
            "timestamp": "2015-11-02T03:37:08Z",
            "user": "Heyitsstevo",
            "filehidden": ""
          }
        ]
      }
    }
  }
}

If there is a revision that is "filehidden" we can assume something has been deleted and it was probably the non-free media so we skip this page. But if nothing was deleted then it probably still exists and should be reported. None of this is exacting but it would definitely narrow things down to a reasonable number and probably generate useful results for manual review. It would be mostly plumbing work combining the SQL query, revision hunt and API JSON parse. Then generating the report. There would be a mechanism to ignore known false positives, but would need to see how many FPs there are the best way to do that, probably tag the page with a silent template. -- GreenC 13:47, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

That's for files that were once non-free, yes? Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 15:19, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
That's the hope, it determines by checking if there is a {{Non-free use rationale logo}} somewhere in the page's revision history. -- GreenC 15:25, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
That would be good for such a task, but personally I was hoping more for a way to detect files that were overwritten in general. For sometimes these need to be split. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 15:34, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
Ah. Well there is image similarity AI, example. Never worked with one before but if the old image is radically different from the new supposedly it would detect that. -- GreenC 16:02, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

The 40th edition of The Hurricane Herald

Hello there! I'd like to point out the project newsletter, located at Wikipedia:WikiProject Tropical cyclones/Newsletter/Archive 40 - you get a mention for creating a new GA in the project! If you'd like to get this newsletter, please add your name to the list. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:14, 1 May 2020 (UTC)

Thanks, Hurricanehink, but I am generally more interested in the background mechanisms (such as the ones I wrote about at Cyclonic Niño and at African humid period#Effect on other climate modes) than in individual storms. Regards, Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 15:40, 1 May 2020 (UTC)
@Hurricanehink: Incidentally, since I saw that discussion on changing the hurricane track maps: I am fairly certain that I've seen other academic publications using the Wikipedia maps, that might be something to keep in mind of. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 15:44, 1 May 2020 (UTC)
Ah those background mechanisms are so important, and not often written about! And as for the maps being used, absolutely that's something we're aware of, with how many people use our maps. At the same time, we've had accessibility complaints over the years. The biggest feature of that discussion is making the maps zoomable. We're trying to get the map rollout right, since it will affect thousands of maps. Any feedback on the maps would be appreciated. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:49, 1 May 2020 (UTC)

Restoring deleted file

Hello. JJMC89 directed me to reach out to you regarding the restoration of File:Ironmonger 2008film.jpg. I create a request at WP:REFUND to restore the file, because as I stated there, this was tagged as part of The Squirrel Conspiracy removing improperly tagged NFC. However, this image was used at Iron Man (2008 film) where I believe it was a valid use of a non-free image (opposed to also on the Iron Monger article where it was not). The Squirrel Conspiracy was not opposed to the file being restored so I'm hoping that it can be for sole use on the 2008 film article. Thank you. - Favre1fan93 (talk) 18:27, 5 May 2020 (UTC)

Greetings, Favre1fan93. Normally I'd say that you need to explain a bit more clearly how the file complies with WP:NFCC#3, but given how poorly trafficked FFD is I am inclined to leave that to further discussion. So undeleted. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 18:36, 5 May 2020 (UTC)
Thank you. I'm going to look over the NFCC information for it and ensure it is properly updated and correct. - Favre1fan93 (talk) 18:38, 5 May 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for the image edit. I promoted the hook to Prep 6. But both image descriptions are saying that they were photographed in 2006. Should we change the caption? Yoninah (talk) 14:52, 7 May 2020 (UTC)
@Yoninah:Probably yes. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 15:13, 7 May 2020 (UTC)
OK, thanks. Yoninah (talk) 15:18, 7 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi! You deleted this article because of lack of notability. I don’t contest the deletion; however, there was an opinion in the delete discussion that the information (like track listing) that was in the album article should be moved to Ware’s article, which I agree with. I can’t do this myself after the article’s deletion, so could you please add any information not present in Ware’s article there? If you feel more comfortable, you can also email me the article text so that I can do the merge. Thanks in advance, —Tacsipacsi (talk) 13:17, 30 April 2020 (UTC)

@Tacsipacsi:I've moved it to User:Tacsipacsi/Taylor Ware (album) in the meantime. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 13:24, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the restore. I merged the articles, so please delete my subpage in order not to keep non-notable content even in userspace. Thanks in advance, —Tacsipacsi (talk) 19:21, 7 May 2020 (UTC)
I've moved it back and redirected it in case that the history is needed for attribution purposes. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 19:38, 7 May 2020 (UTC)
Thanks! I mentioned the authors in my edit comment to provide attribution, but keeping as a redirect won’t hurt. The talk page, however, doesn’t seem worth keeping for me—it’s now empty, but hasn’t contained anything but a WikiProject template ever. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 20:21, 7 May 2020 (UTC)

Thanks

Hello, thanks for your deletion of Francis Pollara. I attempted to add NOINDEX, please check for proper inclusion. Thanks K.crust (talk) 18:47, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

Um. I am fairly sure that NOINDEX if anything is applied by MediaWiki software automatically for deleted page. @K.crust:. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 18:59, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

Mulling over RfC, would like advice

Greetings. I'm mulling over starting an RfC about treating files that use {{Do not move to Commons}} as non-free, or quasi non-free. My thoughts are at User talk:The Squirrel Conspiracy/sandbox. As one of the mainstays of the file namespace, I would appreciate your thoughts on the matter before I go any further. The Squirrel Conspiracy (talk) 21:44, 11 May 2020 (UTC)

By the way, I also looped in Fastily. If there's anyone else you think I should loop in, let me know. Thanks! The Squirrel Conspiracy (talk) 21:46, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
@The Squirrel Conspiracy: Good proposal, Wikipedia's inconsistent approach towards copyrighted in US vs copyrighted abroad has been bugging me for awhile. I'm favor of #2, second choice #1. I don't see anything wrong with the proposal as written, although when you start the RfC it would be good to include an option #3 (status quo) and support/oppose sections for each proposed solution. I'd also prepare for a ferocious battle since most commentators don't (or won't) understand copyright. -FASTILY 07:27, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
@The Squirrel Conspiracy: #2 basically means that enWikipedia would have to now respect copyrights in the source country on top of these of the US, same for #1 but that'd be a more lenient rule than full-on NFC criteria. Either would imply a major change to Wikipedia:Non-U.S. copyrights and how enWikipedia deals with image copyrights, so some notifications at the Village Pump and the guideline talk pages would be needed. Personally, I don't think that either option will pass unless the WMF demands it or there is a ruling by a US supreme court stating that US websites need to respect foreign copyrights when hosting foreign-created works. Also, {{Do not move to Commons}} might not be used exclusively for copyright matters. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 08:41, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
@Fastily and Jo-Jo Eumerus: Based on your feedback, I've restructured the RfC and added some language about how Keep Local should be used in cases where the reason a file isn't moved to Commons isn't license related. I agree that there's not a great chance of this passing, but having the discussion as a community will itself be a victory, as to my knowledge the issue hasn't been discussed before, and at the end of the RfC, whichever system prevails will be the result of consensus rather than inertia. Deletion review of Michael Ley

Dear, Jo-Jo Eumerus. I hope I am doing this right and this is the right place (never done this before), but I'd like to ask for a review of the article about Michael Ley. If I am not mistaken, you have been the one who deleted the page.

Full disclosure: I am working with Michael Ley together on DBLP, so I cannot be considered unbiased. However, I am confident that the following arguments can be confirmed by anyone who is working in computer science research.

These are the main arguments for restoring the page according to the WP:NACADEMIC criteria:

1. The person's research has had a significant impact in their scholarly discipline, broadly construed, as demonstrated by independent reliable sources.

Beside its impact as a tool/service on the daily work of almost every computer scientists, dblp also has been cited several thousand times as a research dataset publication in peer-reviewed scholarly articles. It is infeasible to give an exact number due to the inconsistent citing practices for datasets; but using a simple fulltext search, one can estimate about 41,000 articles using Google Scholar[1] or 13,900 using Semantic Scholar.[2] In particular, SpringerLink lists about 4,000 articles,[3] Elsevier ScienceDirect lists about 900 articles,[4] the ACM Digital Library lists more than 2,300 articles,[5] and IEEE Xplore lists more than 2,500 articles.[6]

2. The person has received a highly prestigious academic award or honor at a national or international level.

Michael Ley has received the ACM Special Interest Group on Management of Data (SIGMOD) Contributions Award in 2003 and the VLDB Endowment]] Special Recognition Award in 1997. Just today, the ACM awarded him the 2019 ACM Distinguished Service Award.[7] As "awards, honors and prizes of notable academic societies," those awards fall in the category of "less significant academic honors and awards that confer a high level of academic prestige" (cf. [8], nr 2, first bullet).

8. The person has been the head or chief editor of a major, well-established academic journal in their subject area.

Michael Ley has been the editor in chief of DBLP since 1993, i.e., for more than 27 years now.[9] While not a classical journal, DBLP is a continuous, daily updated data publication since 27 years now, and it is very well established within computer science. As a matter of fact, DBLP has (as of end of 2019) more than 1 million page visits per day and more than 900,000 distinct users (IPs) per month (published statistics of 2018 available[10], c.f Sec. 13.2).

Thanks for your consideration.

PS: For your convenience, I restored, corrected and updated a version of the Michael Ley article here which can be used at your discretion. Because I am biased I'd rather not like to edit the article myself. MRA (talk) 14:54, 13 May 2020 (UTC)

Greetings, @MRA:. I don't think that DBLP being notable makes its principal developer notable as well but I am not so sure about the other point. I'll ask for review at WP:DRV, our dedicated venue for reviewing closes. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 16:06, 13 May 2020 (UTC)

DYK for Espenberg

On 14 May 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Espenberg, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the largest maars (example pictured) on Earth, found at the Alaskan volcanic field of Espenberg, formed when magma explosively interacted with ice in the ground? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Espenberg. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Espenberg), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000.
