Today I heard someone say that the pin on their lapel represented the Combat Infantry Badge.I thought it must be something special, so of course I Googled it... Wow! That is very special, and what an honor to have those men still alive, who stood right up to the enemy, maybe even breathing the same air! Some of the bravest men in the world are in the United States Military! Thank you for risking your life for some war that you probably didn't really believe in and that we finally lost. Help!

Hey John, how are you? I hope you are doing fine. I was trying to add images in infobox same as on New York City article, but without alternate images. I tried my best to copy from New York City but it seems like I failed miserably. The images seems fractured. See User:LearnIndology/sandbox1. Please help! Hi John of Reading, first, let me thank you for your efforts over the years to correct my numerous typos. Second, one problem that comes up though, is that prior to the mid to later 19th century, spelling was not fixed. Some words such as Rein Deer or Rifle Man were in the process of transition, and in some cases even individuals were inconsistent from one document to another in how they spelled their own names. And then there are idiosyncratic abbreviations. I admit that I am not consistent in my practices, but in general I try to favor function over form and follow the spelling in the source to facilitate searching by others. AWB question

I ran AWB on this version of Pax Amicus Theatre that has two maintenance templates. AWB did not wrap them with {{MI}}. I've never seen it not do that before. Any clue? MB 05:54, 24 May 2022 (UTC)

Hi John of Reading, I often come across wikilinks in section headers and was considering writing regex to find and do the bulk of the work to change to 'see also'. You'll see from my user page and my contributions list that I concentrate on spelling and grammar edits, so I won't be helping with this. At the Virginia Women's Monument home page, the menu bar and text include the apostrophe consistently, but they've left it out of the HTML title element that sets the name of the browser tab. I noticed in National Museum Zaječar, AWB added MI around a "citations needed" template and "expand" template. In the next edit, a bot removed it. I contacted the bot operator who doesn't really care but was told by one user not that expand is not a maintenance/cleanup template so shouldn't be within MI (see User_talk:Kanashimi/Archive_1) section Expand_by_language_templates_in_{{Multiple_issues}}, because it's not a listed in Wikipedia:Template index/Cleanup. But I see it there in section 6. Another user disagreed and started at discussion at at the MI template over a year ago and no one commented. The issue apparently died. We now have two tools disagreeing. I don't suppose you would care to take the lead in resolving this. MB 02:14, 25 September 2022 (UTC)

No, first I would expand the discussion at the template TP. The link there to the discussion at the bot operators TP doesn't work anymore - there is a template in the header which is why I didn't give you a direct link here- maybe you can figure out how to make that work). We should better explain the issue - AWB and Cewbot are in conflict and we need to prevent tool-caused edit wars. List reasons why expand should or should not be included in MI, and recommend which tool should change (and maybe note that AWB has little support presently). Ping the people who commented before (one has not be active in over six months). To get more involvement, we can try a notice at Wikipedia talk:Cleanup and if that doesn't generate enough comments to establish a clear consensus, a notice somewhere more watched, probably Pump/policy? Just saw something else a little strange. AWB wanted to remove {{uncategorized}} from Kassite dynasty. The article does not have any content categories, but it is in Category:Possible CC BY-SA or GFDL violations due to copying within Wikipedia, which is probably why AWB thinks it is not uncategorized. Since that is not a content category, is the problem that the cat is not a "hidden" cat? I don't know how much you know about cats, but probably more than me. MB 04:48, 25 October 2022 (UTC)
@MB: Yes, that's it. I've poked around in the AWB source code, and the tests are (1) no categories explicitly placed at the foot of the article, (2) no *visible* categories added by templates. It looks as if the other categories underneath Category:Possible copyright violations are all marked "hidden", so I suspect the fix is to make Category:Possible CC BY-SA or GFDL violations due to copying within Wikipedia a hidden category as well. -- John of Reading (talk) 06:42, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

html and htm extensions

@Bernardbonvin: Why should the software be changed to do that? It's up to each external website to decide the format for its URLs. At Fausto Cercignani, it looks as if someone broke the URLs and you have put them straight again. Split the Reading article?

Have you considered splitting the Reading article into one for the town / urban area (using {{infobox UK place}}) and another for the Borough (using {{infobox settlement}}). The article is quite long and I suggest it would be improved by hiving off the political and administrative details to another article. @JMF: No, I hadn't given that any thought. I visited the article only to pick up the current population figure, and was surprised to see all those maps in the infobox. [Yes, I agree with you re the maps.] Legally, none of the town can be outside the Borough. In the real world (see Reading built-up area, which shows the status as of the 2011 census), quite a lot of it is and I suspect that the 2021 census will show even more blurring. So the question is, when describing Reading, do you give higher priority to lines on a map of administrative boundaries over real places where people live. It is rather nonsensical that Earley and Woodley, both clearly part of Reading, are legally part of Wokingham purely because of an accident of history. But I realise that "it's complicated", so maybe that is a step too far. The ONS has no qualms, though: Reading built-up sub-area].

League and team logos are probably nonfree images which can't be used in tables like these. For example, the article on the Goa Professional League displays its logo at the top right, but Wikipedia's rather strict rules do not permit the logo to be shown on the yearly articles such as 2022–23 Goa Professional League, and certainly not as decoration in an overview table. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:57, 29 June 2023 (UTC)

Dalhousie AC  Not done The URL you've given me here is the URL of the image, not of a page that uses the image, so I cannot check whether this green logo is the correct one. The external links in the Dalhousie AC article aren't much use either. The Facebook link leads to an inactive page with a tiny transparent logo; the second link leads to a page hosted by a computer gaming site, and I don't trust their black logo; the third link leads to a page with no logos.

I'm not going to add File:Mohun_Bagan_Super_Giant.svg to Mohun Bagan AC (academy and youth teams), because it's not a logo that is specific to the academy and youth teams, and Wikipedia rules require "minimal use" of non-free images. Here's an example of how strictly this rule gets applied: the 'Tank Man' image is arguably the iconic image of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. Back in 2007, the image was prominently displayed at the top right of that article, as well as in the article dedicated to that protestor, Tank Man. But nowadays the "minimal use" rule means that you won't find that iconic image anywhere in the main article about the protests.
I'm not a football expert and have no knowledge of any South Asian languages, so I'm won't be delving into the other articles you've mentioned. I mostly stick to spellings and grammar anyway. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:39, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
