Conflict of interest policy

Information icon Hello, Johnmoor. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.

All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.

If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:

  • Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
  • Be cautious about deletion discussions. Everyone is welcome to provide information about independent sources in deletion discussions, but avoid advocating for deletion of articles about your competitors.
  • Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
  • Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.

Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you. --Ronz (talk) 19:41, 18 October 2013 (UTC)

Grammarly

I've gone ahead and updated the article based upon the responses from the NPOVN. I expect you'll continue to object. If so, please follow WP:DR and especially focus on the content and relevant policies/guidelines. I strongly suggest mediation as the next step. --Ronz (talk) 17:17, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

Hello? Please respond. There are alternatives, but it would be helpful to know that you have some awareness of the situation. --Ronz (talk) 16:30, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

I did so, where it is most appropriate—on the Grammarly talk page. Thank you. —JOHNMOORofMOORLAND (talk) 17:39, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
I've an alternative plan then. How about we go to ANI and discuss your ownership of the article and inability to work with other editors to improve the encyclopedia? --Ronz (talk) 20:38, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
I'm seeing the exact same behavior from you with Wikipedia:Deletion_review#Randy_Gage_.28prosperity_coach.29. It's as if you've learned absolutely nothing from all the work on Grammarly. --Ronz (talk) 19:10, 18 October 2013 (UTC)
Jeremy Levitt, Dave Crenshaw, Steve Rizzo have similar problems. I expect we'll find the problems in every BLP you've made. --Ronz (talk) 19:20, 18 October 2013 (UTC)
Michael John Hurdzan isn't nearly so bad.
Angela Tsun is very problematic. --Ronz (talk) 19:38, 18 October 2013 (UTC)
From a quick review of your editing, I think a pretty good case can be made that you're violating WP:COI, likely a paid editor. --Ronz (talk) 19:43, 18 October 2013 (UTC)
Given the likely conflict of interest and paid editing, I think WP:COIN would be a good next step. --Ronz (talk) 23:51, 18 October 2013 (UTC)

October 2013

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Please be particularly aware, Wikipedia's policy on edit warring states:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made; that is to say, editors are not automatically "entitled" to three reverts.
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes; work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing. ElKevbo (talk) 15:35, 20 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi John. I think the problem you are going to have is that the article still seems very promotional, even if that isn't the intent. Part of the problem, I think, might be attributed to some strange/strained English/prose. Lines like...

Gage did not finish high school and did not go to college. He was jailed once, charged with armed robbery. He taught himself by studying prosperity teachings from the past.

...just aren't in the style most editors/readers expect to see in a neutrally worded article. It's not terrible, but it isn't good either. Something like...

Gage was educated at [school] but did not complete his studies and did not attend college. In [year], Gage was convicted of armed robbery and was sentenced to [years] in prison. Upon his release he set about studying a range of "prosperity" and "wealth building" techniques.

They are mostly stylistic changes but there needs to be some acknowledgement that he went to prison, was released and set about rebuilding his life; a story he now uses in the context of his motivational speaking ("if I made it, you can too"). Covering that with fairly awkward and simplistic language makes it look like there is an effort to gloss over his imprisonment, when in actual fact it is probably something he himself highlights. The other problem, again in my opinion, is the sourcing. Having 26 sources in the lede is just ridiculous and, again, makes it look like someone is trying to "refspam" citations into the article to establish notability where none exists. You need one (maybe two) references per claim, not 10. I don't think anyone doubts he is a motivational speaker, just whether he is a notable motivational speaker. The claim that he is a motivational speaker really only needs one reference - just make sure it is a good one. The publications themselves don't need references, in my opinion, nor should they be hyperlinked to LOC catalogues. If any of them are notable in their own right, wikilink them. Otherwise, including links like that just looks promotional. There are probably lots of little things that need fixing per WP:MOS but those are WP:FIXTHEPROBLEM sorts of problems. While there are questions about paid editing and the article is full of "churnalism" sources and strange or promotional language, editors are going to take issue with it. More than happy to help clean it up a bit but you probably need to address the major stuff first. Stalwart111 02:00, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

I agree with the above assessment.
This is a good opportunity for Johnmoor to demonstrate that can make an article that doesn't have all the WP:SOAP, WP:NPOV, and WP:PSTS problems that he's been learning about. It needs a complete rewrite from independent, secondary-or-better, reliable sources. Primary sources should only be used to provide additional details on aspects brought up in the other sources.
External links to non-references fall under WP:EL, so all the external links to publications not being used as references should be removed. Any used as references are primary and shouldn't be used without better ones. --Ronz (talk) 15:49, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
While the consensus is unclear on what to include in sections like the "Publications" section in the article, the entries from his own press are inappropriate as are the Articles. --Ronz (talk) 19:23, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Coat of arms of Nigeria.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Coat of arms of Nigeria.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 21:15, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Your submission at Articles for creation: Randy Gage (March 19)

Your recent article submission to Articles for Creation has been reviewed! Unfortunately, it has not been accepted at this time.
Please read the comments left by the reviewer on your submission. You are encouraged to edit the submission to address the issues raised and resubmit when they have been resolved.
Hi Kevin, Considering that Randy Gage earned CPAE Speaker Hall of Fame with some other recognitions and has written a book which featured in some bestseller lists, including that of The New York Times and Publishers Weekly, does he not meet WP:ANYBIO? All these were cited in my initial submission, but (although, they were straightforward, descriptive statements of facts and referenced with reliably published primary sources—WP:PSTS) another editor removed them as he believes that primary sources should not be used at all—see this revision. Thank you. —JOHNMOORofMOORLAND (talk) 20:48, 19 March 2014 (UTC)
The award doesn't necessasrily establish him as notable, and being included in these lists does not constitute notable coverage. Also, the COI bit still stands, as it still reads in a promotional tone. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 00:08, 20 March 2014 (UTC)
If "the award doesn't necessarily establish him as notable", could you explain to me what really the two statements of WP:ANYBIO is talking about, and could you assist in making the tone neutral? Thank you. —JOHNMOORofMOORLAND (talk) 15:59, 20 March 2014 (UTC)
As the hall of fame isn't notable, he hasn't won a major award by Wikipedia standards. Also, just because he is mentioned in the sources does not mean that he is a notable personality. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 01:35, 22 March 2014 (UTC)

Did you research CPAE Speaker Hall of Fame? It is actually a lifetime honour, one of (if not) the most cherished among professional speakers in the US. Please look at the references again; his coverage are not just mentions, most of them are sizeable articles about him or his books/works or both, examples:

1. Rubin Khoo (March 1, 2007). "Inspired to succeed". The Star (Malaysia). Retrieved September 17, 2013.
2. Karen Putz (October 1, 2012). "Randy Gage: Risky is the New Safe". ChicagoNow. Retrieved September 17, 2013.

5. Christine Hall (March 1, 2013). "The Most Disruptive Marketing Trends Of 2013". Forbes. Retrieved September 17, 2013.

What has kept this contribution from the mainspace this long has been the tone, most contributors agree that the subject is noteworthy; if you can help with the tone, it would be deeply appreciated. Thank you. —JOHNMOORofMOORLAND (talk) 12:06, 23 March 2014 (UTC)

I would suggest having someone who isn't familiar with him at all edit out the parts that are concerning, as that is a good way to make the text neutral. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 19:27, 23 March 2014 (UTC)
Getting that "someone who isn't familiar with him at all" has been a problem; no one seems to be willing to do it yet. I have no link with Randy Gage, myself though, directly or indirectly; this is a personal effort to salvage a contribution that has been plagued with lots of contents related problems previously and now coupled with scepticism of intent. Thank you for the attention. —JOHNMOORofMOORLAND (talk) 22:03, 23 March 2014 (UTC)

Is Nofel Izz or his representatives paying editors to change articles related to him?

I'm guessing the answer is "yes". I hope you're not being paid any longer. --Ronz (talk) 20:45, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

From Kevin Gorman's findings as disclosed here, I guess you might be one of those who purposely disrupt articles in order to get the unsuspecting subjects of the articles to pay for restoration. ——JOHNMOORofMOORLAND (talk) 21:45, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Sorry, but I don't understand. Are you sure it was Gorman? Could you please quote, provide a timestamp, or a diff? --Ronz (talk) 21:49, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Hi. As it was fairly recent, you may not be aware that Wikipedia's Terms of Use were changed on June 15. As a result, it is now necessary under the new rules that anyone being paid to edit on behalf of a client must disclose that relationship. You have a few options as to how - you can make a declaration in the edit summaries, add a statement to the talk page of the article, or you can add a statement to your user page. The disclosure needs to include your employer, your client, and the manner in which you are affiliated, although the "employer" is clearly not relevant when you are doing freelance work. This won't prevent you from doing paid editing work, but is intended to meet the requirements for transparency within the project. For more information, the Terms of Use will help, as will the accompaning FAQ.
As far as I'm aware, you haven't made a declaration along those lines in regard to Nofel Izz, so if you plan to continue to edit on his behalf you will need to do so under the new rules. - Bilby (talk) 03:30, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
I am aware of the new terms of use, and have no need for a disclosure regarding Nofel Izz or any other of my contributions. Thank you. —JOHNMOORofMOORLAND (talk) 22:15, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Space elevator

Please review the policy WP:POINT. What you're doing on Space elevator appears to be a textbook case. Tarl.Neustaedter (talk) 23:02, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

You cited WP:FRINGE when you removed Telescopic Exo Shell from the list in the Related concepts section of the Space elevator article, and on looking at that content guideline, I agreed with you and took a good look at the entire list, removing SpaceShaft which is equally a fringe theory. Although, I am the one who introduced Telescopic Exo Shell into that list, looking at the history, it is obvious that I am not the only one who sees it as worthy of inclusion, and someone else even created an article for it—Telescopic Exo Shell, which is being contested by others. Look at the Wikipedia history of both SpaceShaft and Telescopic Exo Shell and read the citations supporting their inclusion, then explain to me convincingly why and how my contribution is disruptive and I would gladly undo myself. Thank you. —JOHNMOORofMOORLAND (talk) 00:12, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
Appearances are that you are engaging in an edit war to remove something else after your own pet edit got reverted. Precisely WP:POINT, you are making edits to make a point rather than to improve the article. As for the merits, Exo Shell, particularly in the emphasis on crediting someone, looked like pathetic self-promotion of a poorly-thought out idea. Space Shaft is simply bluer sky imagination than the rest of a rather blue sky subject. Tarl.Neustaedter (talk) 03:45, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
May be you should take a look at WP:AGF. Thank you. —JOHNMOORofMOORLAND (talk) 22:22, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Do not avoid the issue; you are not so polite yourself, and it is in my character to be silly with whoever is silly with me. If you do not want to react to this on your talk page:
"For the records, the use of primary sources to support article contents is not forbidden—in fact, WP:PRIMARY states clearly how it should be used, but looking at these articles—1 and 2, which are obvious summaries of interviews published by two reputable organisations, one wonders why you choose to call the first "an announcement" and the other "a reliable source". Of course, I know that you would not understand anyone else's view but Ronz's—e.g. Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents/Problem on BLP noticeboard & Talk:Grammarly#Primary sources. And seriously, do you mean it when you wrote "hold off on any negative assumptions of others"?"
You may do so here. Thank you.

We've been through this before. Only now we've a BLP article, where the quality of sources matter far more than in Grammarly. --Ronz (talk) 01:22, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

--Ronz (talk) 15:26, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

WP:TALK

"**Don't address other users in a heading: Headings invite all users to comment. Headings may be about specific edits but not specifically about the user. (Some exceptions are made at administrative noticeboards, where reporting problems by name is normal.)"

What's the point of your grouping all the discussions together, beyond violating WP:FOC? --Ronz (talk) 23:39, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

My concern is clearly expressed while reacting to one one of your numerous interrelated concerns, which are misleading and probably comes from WP:WIN and WP:POINTy. —JOHNMOORofMOORLAND (talk) 23:58, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
Could you please repeat or reword your reasoning? Thanks! --Ronz (talk) 14:51, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
If you're not going to explain yourself, could you please stop? --Ronz (talk) 15:16, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
Please stop the WP:DONTGETIT habit, what do you not understand? Even at a glance, anyone can see that your so called concerns are interrelated, so what is the point to create separate sections instead of subsection for each of them if not for just being WP:POINTy, to mislead and WP:WIN of course. —JOHNMOORofMOORLAND (talk) 15:42, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
I've asked for you to explain yourself. That's what editors do when they are working together and trying to understand different opinions, perspectives, etc.
Thank you for providing some explanation. Have you ever seen anyone do anything even remotely similar to what you are doing in any other talk page? --Ronz (talk) 15:55, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
No, I have not seen anyone do anything even remotely similar as User:Ronz did on Grammarly and is doing on Nofel Izz now.
Your aim for Talk:Nofel Izz#Requested full protection is to get your disputed contributions preserved just as it happened in Grammarly, is it not? —JOHNMOORofMOORLAND (talk) 16:34, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
I appreciate your reverting the latest of it. Could you please remove the "Recent concerns" heading, and restore all the sub-sections? --Ronz (talk) 17:30, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
As an example, that talk page has sections Singing and Inventor, and then Review Singing sources and Reviewing Inventing sources, all created by you within a brief period, would it not be better understood and less confusing for other contributors if whatever was not covered or is untreated under the first two sections comes in as their subsections? Yet, you did not only create new sections for those, but did so soon after you created another equally related one, Reviewing the sources. —JOHNMOORofMOORLAND (talk) 20:20, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
I'm glad you are now seeing how talk pages might be structured better. Could you please remove the "Recent concerns" heading, and restore all the sub-sections? --Ronz (talk) 21:18, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

Please stop reformatting the talk page to focus on me. You might not have been aware of WP:TALK earlier, but you certainly do now. --Ronz (talk) 21:35, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

I do not see how the creation of the talk page subsections focus on you; it is about the discussions, and you and I are just some of the contributors. Thank you. —JOHNMOORofMOORLAND (talk) 23:54, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
Seems you disagree with yourself: "Formatting interrelated concerns—all of them by User:Ronz" [3], "Bringing together all Concerns raised by User:Ronz", [4], "Complies with WP:TALK — no comments has been edited — see WP:TPOC" [5] --Ronz (talk) 16:25, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
Are those edit summaries not stating the obvious, the more reason why the discussions are interrelated? —JOHNMOORofMOORLAND (talk) 16:55, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
Given that you don't agree with yourself, your repeated rationalizations seem dubious at best. Please revert. --Ronz (talk) 16:58, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
Is your repeated creation of new sections for interrelated concerns instead of creating subsections for them not designed to confuse other contributors, and give you the WP:WIN? When I formatted it, you renamed that section, Recent concerns initially, did you not? Thank you. —JOHNMOORofMOORLAND (talk) 11:05, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
As I said, you don't agree with yourself. You're avoiding the issue. --Ronz (talk) 16:55, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
And finally, you agreed to deliberately creating multiple new sections for interrelated concerns in order to confuse other contributors. —JOHNMOORofMOORLAND (talk) 18:04, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
Sorry, but I've agreed to no such thing, nor did I indicate I might agree even in the slightest.
Still unable to explain yourself I see. --Ronz (talk) 20:08, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

User:Johnmoor, there is a risk you will be blocked for disruption if you continue to change the talk page headings against the wishes of other editors. EdJohnston (talk) 17:32, 30 September 2014 (UTC)
Hi User:EdJohnston, Kindly take a good look at Talk:Nofel Izz (particularly Talk:Nofel Izz#RfC) and its history. It is clear that User:Ronz is the one who is changing "the talk page headings against the wishes of other editors", particular section Talk:Nofel Izz#Clarification on RfC - it's about the sources, which was originally titled "Be Specific" by the contributor. According to one of his edit summaries here, Ronz wrote, "as it is my RfC, I'll do my best to clarify it and address any confusion about it", but you do not use an article talk page section title to clarify what that section was created to request for, you use the body of the section. Ronz's trick is to rush to AN3 to get you who is in dispute with him to stop contributing so that he can push on with his views even when majority clearly disagree; here is a recent good example: AN3 which resulted in Talk:Nofel Izz#Edit warring. The title of that section should be "Be Specific", which appears critical of the RfC started by Ronz, and he has changed it to "Clarification on RfC - it's about the sources" to hide or suppress this critical view; I have listed the complete differences at the AN3 which brought you here, please review. Thank you.
