Amman's Climate (new section)[edit]

I have seen that you have added Amman, Jordan, to the list of cities with Mediterranean climates more than once, despite it being reverted every time, sometimes with an explanation why Amman does not belong on that list (this explanation is what matters, not that it has been reverted every time), and sometimes within an invitation to discuss, which you have not done. I will show to you why Amman does not have a Mediterranean climate, and ask that you do not add it to that list again.

Amman has a semi-arid climate. Here is how I determined that (from the semi-arid climate article, with reference):

To determine if a location has a semi-arid/steppe climate, the precipitation threshold must first be determined. Finding the precipitation threshold (in millimeters) involves first multiplying the average annual temperature in °C by 20, then adding 280 if 70% or more of the total precipitation is in the high-sun half of the year (April through September in the Northern Hemisphere, or October through March in the Southern), or 140 if 30%–70% of the total precipitation is received during the applicable period, or 0 if less than 30% of the total precipitation is so received. If the area's annual precipitation is less than the threshold but more than half the threshold, it is classified as a BS (steppe climate). [1]

From the climate data in Amman's article, we can see that Amman's annual average temperature is 17.6°C (average high of 23.2°C plus average low of 11.9°C, divide by 2), and that it receives 11.3mm of precipitation between April and September, which is 4.3% of its annual average precipitation of 258.3 mm. So to determine the precipitation threshold, we multiply 17.6 by 20 and add 0, which gives us a threshold of 352 mm. As Amman's average annual precipitation (258.3 mm) is below the precipitation threshold (352 mm), we have determined that Amman has a semi-arid climate, not a Mediterranean climate. Furthermore, if we look at the semi-arid climate page, we can see that Amman's climate can be said to be either cold semi-arid or hot semi-arid, depending on the isotherm used.

Now if you wish to add Amman to the lists of cities with semi-arid climates, I will kindly ask that you place it in the list of cities in the section "Regions of variable classification", as that is where Amman best belongs. Thank you. 1brettsnyder (talk) 20:18, 24 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

August 2016[edit]

Information icon Thank you for your contributions. Please mark your edits, such as your recent edits to mansaf, as "minor" only if they are minor edits. In accordance with Help:Minor edit, a minor edit is one that the editor believes requires no review and could never be the subject of a dispute. Minor edits consist of things such as typographical corrections, formatting changes or rearrangement of text without modification of content. Additionally, the reversion of clear-cut vandalism and test edits may be labeled "minor". Adding, removing or altering the meaning of text is almost never minor. Thanks.
