Wanga tribe (Luhya)

Julius, one appreciates the work that you are doing on wikipedia but for some articles let other's expertise and interest precede yours. For the past 24 hours I have been going back and forth with other editors over the above article because as a Wanga I have spent considerable time compiling a simple, accurate concise article on the Wanga. If you look at the article as it is now, who are these 'ojeda' that you keep insisting the Wanga be called by? I put up a link in the previous edit that is a sum of all available info obtained from oral and internet sources. So kindly undo your edit. Njaro

My minor edits to the placename town of Njaro being near Moshi have to do with a possible name source for the mountain Kilimanjaro, which broken down means Hill (or mountain) of the Njaro, and since Kilimanjaro is volcanic, and occasionally smokes, believe this is relevant. Kiswahili Moshi means smoke Please reply to me at my Wiki page at your convenience. I appreciate your enthusiasm, and want you to understand my edit. Raila Odinga

I am asking you kindly to stop removing information that is well resourced. The proper way to challenge an entry is to take it up on the discussion page. If you continue to remove information that is resourced by a valid newspaper I will have to get an admin involved. Again stop removing information just because you think it doesnt belong there. You must give more information other than "its not a valid resource" when you delete other users information. The information I added to Raila Odinga was from three reliable sources (a BBC article, a Voice of America article and an Africa Business news article). Judging by your other entries, and previous complaints about your changes to this page, you seem to be a Kikuyu supremacist who is bringing ethnic and tribal animosity to an information page, where it is highly inappropriate. I would be fine with deletion of the whole paragraph, but as people interested in conveying reliable information, we both should find citing Robert Mugabe's propoganda minister for reliable information about Kenya (or anything else) utterly bizarre. My policy is to keep this, like any other article, as neutral as possible. I have consistently removed any biased text from this page, whether they have been added pro- or anti-Odinga editors. Nyang’oma Kogelo, Alego, etc.

Hey Julius. I recently created a disambig. page for Alego, trying to clarify some of the information that was in Nyang’oma Kogelo. I have to say that I'm still pretty confused though. While it appears that the only constituency with this name is Alego Usonga Constituency, the Siaya, Results of Kenyan parliamentary election, 2007, and Edwin Ochieng Yinda articles seem to only refer to it as simply "Alego Constituency." In addition, I'm not even sure if the information I added to the Alego page is 100% accurate since one of the pdf links aren't working. BTW, you said here that Nyang’oma Kogelo is not part of Bondo District, but the article on the Early life and career of Barack Obama cites "The Ministry of Information and Communications, Government of Kenya." Help

Hi Julius, I was wondering if you could help me with something. I'm confused as to what the most common meaning of the word "Alego" is. Does the term refer to a general region around Lake Victoria? Or is it an alternate name for Kogelo? Page 9 of Dreams from My Father says that Barack Obama's father was born "on the shores of Lake Victoria, in a place called Alego." Hi I am not shore why you removed the recent updates to the page, the issues mentioned and sources are 100% verifiable complete with sources, and I believe WIKI states that Encyclopedic content must be verifiable. If the UN and BBC sources provided are not acceptable to you please help me understand which sources are acceptable, you mentioned Libel, if that is the case Najib Balala would have and is free to sue those sources. I would hate to think that your edit and removal is a personal attempt to sweep under the rug the crimes against children going on in Kenya with the Ministry and Balala’s knowledge, or you may be a political sympathiser. Hi, I have seen that you have recently created some articles about Kenyan constituencies. While I appreciate your work, I would like to suggest you to rename these articles to reflect their origin and to match the system used with other countries (see for example Dingle (Parliament of Ireland constituency), Helston (UK Parliament constituency), Wigtownshire (Parliament of Scotland constituency), Kapiri Mposhi (Zambian constituency), Berekum (Ghana parliament constituency) or Italian Islands (European Parliament constituency) ). Perhaps Somewhere (Kenyan parliament constituency) or Somewhere (Parliament of Kenya constituency) could be usefull solutions. Best wishes

Migingo Is.

Can you help?...provide guidance.....I see you've done some good work....See my Migingo Island note on the discussion page and the July 20 edit & edit summary. I was trying back in June (gave up for awhile) to instill some sense of NPOV and correct the numerous geographic and factual deliberate distortions by UgandanPatriot and his probable sock puppets there, but I'm going away for the next couple weeks (ruling out arbitration for now), losing patience, and am not an administrator nor well-versed in the science and practices of WP.....I do have a lot of resources and expertise on international boundaries, including studying this one a lot at work over the past few months. Ice Hockey in Mali

Hi Julius. You proposed deletion for article Ice Hockey in Mali, but what I wroted into that article is real information. I live in Bamako, Mali and I have watched the Mali's ice hockey league since 1972. I know that article may sound like a hoax, but believe me, it's true. Please don't propose for deletion for that article anymore. I will try to search information about Ice hockey in Mali, and when I find something, I will surely add it.

Luge team from Bemuda

Similarly, hot and steamy Bemuda IIRC had a team practicing for Luge, which is an ice cold sport. The practice field in Bemuda was necessarily limited in realism but they did the best that they could. The Bemuda team probably came last, but competing at all was a source of pride.

BTW, When I say Luge I might mean Bobsleigh.

Unethical deletion of other Users inputs

Again stop removing information just because you think it doesnt belong there. You must give more information other than "its not a valid resource" when you delete other users information. The Wikimedia Foundation is wooing new editors and deleting their entries without due explanation does more harm than any good. Most newbies who have left after their first edits have cited deletion of their works as a major factor to their departure from editting. Invitation to workshops on editing Wikipedia

Dear Julius Sahara,

We are a team of researchers at the University of Oxford and AU Sharjah, researching the experiences of editors of content about the Arab world on Wikipedia. We are interested in your experiences of editing Wikipedia and are organising two events that we think you would be an excellent contributor to.

First, we are hosting an online wiki focus group about contributing to Wikipedia in Arabic and to articles about the Middle East and North Africa. We are interested in what barriers you perceive to exist in Wikipedia, how articles can be made better and generally what can be done to expand and improve Arabic Wikipedia and Wikipedia articles about the Arab world. This discussion will take place on a MediaWiki hosted at our institution and be available in English and Arabic. We will allow users to create their own discussion pages in addition to our discussions.

Second, we are hosting face-to-face workshops in Cairo from 21st-22nd October 2012. If you are interested in this we should be able to pay travel and accommodation costs for up to twenty participants. This workshop will cover similar themes to the online discussion but will allow participants to meet one another and benefit from being together.

We will take care of the organization and planning and all you have to do is show up and be ready to discuss. But if you would like to help shape some of the discussion themes in advance, please let us know. We have booked time in the workshops for Wikipedian-led discussions.

* What is the purpose of this project? This project is about who represents the Arab World on Wikipedia, and how the Middle East and the Arab world is represented on Wikipedia. We are studying Wikipedia through statistics, edit history data and personal experiences. Our ultimate goal is to help Wikipedia grow in size and fairness and do academic research on this topic. Who is funding this project? This project is funded by the International Development Research Centre (http://www.idrc.ca). This organization is funded by the Canadian government to improve infrastructure across the world, including online content. We have been working with the IDRC since June 2010. Why did you contact me? Because you’re awesome. In all seriousness, we have been looking through Wikipedia for active editors based on user activity in either Arabic Wikipedia or articles about the Arab world. We have not contacted everyone we could, but we contact people that we think will help to balance the discussion and help us (and each other) learn more about the state of Wikipedia. Do I need to participate in both events? Not at all. You are welcome to participate in both or just one. We recognise that it will be more convenient for some people to have online conversations and for others to speak in person. For some people it will not be practical to fly to the Middle East, but we still consider their contributions important and want to give them a voice in this work. Can I use my Wikipedia handle in the online discussion? You do not need to use any particular name on the online forum. All we need is a valid email address so you can register. You can post using your real name, your Wikipedia name or a completely different nickname, whatever allows you to speak your mind most effectively. What sort of travel funding will you supply for the face-to-face workshop? We have funding for travel and accommodation costs for approximately twenty participants depending on where they are coming from. If you would like to join us in one of the face-to-face meetings then we will do our best to get you there. The exact amount of support we can offer will depend on how many expressions of interest we get and their distance from the chosen venue. Can I get involved and help to organize sessions? Yes, but this is completely optional. Our first priority is organizing a space for people to attend, talk about Wikipedia, and discuss how to expand and improve it. However, if you want to help organize discussions, advise on venues or facilitate specific conversations, please let us know. The discussion we have already organised/planned will focus generally on barriers that people perceive to exist when editing Wikipedia either in Arabic or about topics related to the Arab world. But if there is any particular angle of conversation that you’d like to focus on and start a discussion about then please let us know and we can either incorporate it in the programme or let you lead that part of the conversation. Will the face-to-face meeting be public? The meeting won’t be open to the broader public in order to facilitate focused discussions about the topics of greatest concern. We will compile a summary research report of the discussions. People can choose how/if they want to be identified, and a draft version of this document will be circulated to everyone who participates. What if I don’t live in the Middle East or North Africa? We would still very much encourage you to participate in the online discussion. However, we think it is unlikely that we will be able to fly you in for the in person workshops. If you can pay your own way, we may still be able to provide you with hotel expenses. In short, talk to us and we will see what we can do. Will these events be in English or Arabic? Both events will be designed to accommodate English and Arabic speakers. The online discussion will have tracks for both languages and the workshops will have simultaneous English and Arabic sessions that you can choose between (as well as coming-together sessions to share experiences). Three of the researchers speak English as a first language and three speak Arabic as a first language.
