Licenses

Most things that are suitable for uploading should go to Wikimedia Commons. There is a blue uploud button on the home page. The selection of licenses is an algorithm.

If you are sending a photo/drawing/recording that you made yourself, after selected the file you select the options first.

You will have to mark three points: 1 "Is this entirely your own work?" choose option 1 that it is only your work. I will discuss option 2 later and option 3 is logically described. In the point 2 you choose the license, this is called a Creative Commons license. - CC0 means that you allow everyone to do whatever with this file - the rest means that everyone can use your file, but should credit you as the original author Point 3 is just a formality.

If you want to send something that someone else did, things get complicated. You don't have to provide just one license.

If the original creator has published it elsewhere under a Creative Commons license, then we'll mark it with a license number. In the absence of creative commons, you must select a matching case from the generic licenses or Country-specific to prove that what you are uploading is in the public domain. It's a real maze and you need to gain your own experience in recognizing each case.

Select the matching license from the list and enter its shortcut, e.g. {{PD-Textlogo}} in the "Enter a different license in wikitext format" option.

If it is a mixed work

like that flag, you need to mark it with a Creative Commons license, and after sending it, add a license to it as if it were not yours.

If no license fits,

then there is no point in sending such a file because it will be deleted. However, if such a file is needed and cannot be replaced, then it can be sent to Wikipedia. You then select the option "Upload a non-free file" and fill out the questionnaire. This process is described in more detail step by step.

So if I create an SVG of a real-life flag I upload it with both a creative commons license and a public domain license?

@Jyglesias3 [1] I do it this way if I put a lot of my own work into it (a license for my own contribution to the file + a license for the original work that I reproduce). However, when I haven't put a lot of work into it, for example this simple logo [2] I just cut out from a ticket, then I skip the license for my own contribution.

As for the Albanian Socialist Party flag, it will be removed because the logo on it is under an improper license and they will probably remove the logo too, or at least they should. The problem is not your fault, but the fault of the one who sent the logo. Swiãtopôłk (talk) 17:36, 8 October 2024 (UTC)
