Ramanathapuram C S Murugabhoopathy (Born: February 14th, 1914, Died: March 21st, 1998) Ramanathapuram C S Murugabhoopathy (also popularly referred to as CSM) is one of the most distinguished Mridanga maestros of the 20th century. He was a contemporary of Palghat Mani Iyer (1912-1981) and Palani Subramania Pillai (1908-1962)(1). The three legends are revered as the holy trinity of Mridanga (2,3)

=====Level 5======Early Life: Born in the town of Ramanathapuram (Ramnad) in Tamil Nadu, Murugabhoopathy obtained his early lessons in Mridanga from his father Chitsabai Servai and later on from Palani Muttiah Pillai (Father of Palani Subramania Pillai) both of whom were students of the great Manpoondia Pillai (read as Maamudia Pillai). Murugabhoopathy’s elder brother C S Shankarsivam Bhagavatar was adept at "italic" Laya (sense of rhythm) and "italic" TaaLa (a tool to measure time in classical music)was a father figure and a mentor to Murugabhoopathy (4). A young CSM picked up many tips from legendary percussionists including Kumbhakonam Azhaganambi Pillai, who taught him some intricate left hand playing techniques(2).

=====Level 5======Major Performances: C S Murugabhoopathy was active on concert circuits for nearly six decades (1930-1990) (2). He performed on the Mridanga with stalwarts of carnatic classical music such as Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, Chittor Subramania Pillai, Musiri Subramania Iyer and Dandapani Deshikar (4) CSM benefited a lot from the generous promotion and support given by Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar and Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer(2,3, 4). CSM also performed alongside G N Balasubramiam, Madurai Mani Iyer, M D Ramanathan, Ramnad Krishnan, T M Thyagarajan, Maharajapuram Santhanam, Madurai Somasundaram, Madurai T N Sheshgopalan, T Chowdiah (violin), T N Krishnan (violin), Lalgudi Jayraman (violin) and other leading musicians in many concerts(2,4).

=====Level 5======Major Awards and Recognition2: Kalaimamani (1963); Padma Sri (1973); Sangeetha Nataka Academy Award (1975); State Artiste of Tamil Nadu (1979); Palghat Mani Iyer Award (1985)

=====Level 5======Legacy: CSM developed many unique patterns and lessons and established a new playing style. CSM was renowned for the pure tonal quality of his instruments. Clarity in high speed renditions was one of the hallmarks of his thani avarthanes (solos). Some of his notable students include Mavilekkara Shankarakutty Nair, Karaikudi Krishnamurthy (Singapore and London), Kumbakonam Premkumar (AIR Delhi), and B Druvaraj (Bangalore). His most famous student was the Khanjira wizard G Harishankar (AIR-Madras)(2).

Uploading a picture[edit]

Hello again. Sorry, I'm not really online in IRC these days and won't be for a bit so no chance of real-time chat help with me, I'm afraid. I'm sure there are plenty of other helpers in the help channel though. Uploading a photo is fairly straightforward, especially if it hasn't been published anywhere else. The full set of instructions on how to is found here: COMMONS:OTRS. A helper might be able to give you more in-depth instructions though. Don't be afraid to ask them for help.-- ObsidinSoul 05:32, 3 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
