Happy New Year, and welcome to a special double issue of Books & Bytes. We've included a retrospective on the changes and progress TWL has seen over the last year, the results of the survey TWL participants completed in December, some of our plans for the future, a second interview with a Wiki Love Libraries coordinator, and more. Here's to 2014 being a year of expansion and innovation for TWL!

The Wikipedia Library completed the first 6 months of its Individual Engagement grant last week. Here's where we are and what we've done:

Increased access to sources: 1500 editors signed up for 3700 free accounts, individually worth over $500,000, with usage increases of 400-600%
Deep networking: Built relationships with Credo, HighBeam, Questia, JSTOR, Cochrane, LexisNexis, EBSCO, New York Times, and OCLC
New pilot projects: Started the Wikipedia Visiting Scholar project to empower university-affiliated Wikipedia researchers
Developed community: Created portal connecting 250 newsletter recipients, 30 library members, 3 volunteer coordinators, and 2 part-time contractors
Tech scoped: Spec'd out a reference tool for linking to full-text sources and established a basis for OAuth integration
Broad outreach: Wrote a feature article for Library Journal's The Digital Shift; presenting at the American Library Association annual meeting

Question about a missing preference

Hi Klortho, I am in the process of adjusting my "Watchlist" and "E-mail" preferences and I seem to be missing two items. The first item is the ability to "Add pages and files I move to my watchlist". The second item is "E-mail me when my user talk page is changed". Would you please let me know the best way for me to add these two items? Thank you!

DHayes14, your description of the instructions doesn't match what I see when I visit your course page, here. What I see is that the item "add pages and files I move to my watchlist" has a note next to it to ignore it if that option doesn't show up for you, and "E-mail me when my user talk page is changed" is not among the instructions. At the beginning of the semester I printed out a hard copy of the Wikipedia Course Discussion page. This morning I compared my print out with the version that is currently on the web and it appears that there have been some changes... and my copy is outdated.     • Started refactoring and fixing issues with automatically created summaries that are, for example, created by bots via API calls.
    • Fixed an issue with OAuth on Wikidata because of permissions

Claiming an article

Hello Klortho! My group partner and I decided to select Base Flipping for our Molecular Bio project at JHU. I have checked with Dr. Ogg prior to submitting my initial assessment and she said it was okay. Consideration for a new Wikipedia topic?

Hi Klortho, my partner and I would like to pursue a topic on [Molecular Paleontology] for our WikiPedia project. Because of its interdisciplinary nature, it has been claimed by 7 different WikiProjects, including as a Mid-importance topic for the Molecular and Cellular Biology community. If approved, some of the sections that immediately come to mind that we would likely cover would include techniques for sequencing DNA preserved in fossils, techniques involved in isolating and amplifying the DNA, information about some of the history of the subject, information about the oldest organisms which have been sequenced and other notable organisms, environmental conditions needed to preserve DNA for long periods of time, and challenges inherent within this field. The topic of Molecular Paleontology is directly related to the work I am looking to pursue in my PhD, and my partner is interested in the topic as well. Will you approve our article topic? DC Meetups in March

Happy March!

Though we have a massive snowstorm coming up, spring is just around the corner! Personally, I am looking forward to warmer weather.

Wikimedia DC is looking forward to a spring full of cool and exciting activities. In March, we have coming up:

Question regarding adding videos from another owner

Hi Klortho! I found a video and an animation that I wanted to use for my group project in molecular biology. The wiki video page is very detailed and I wasn't sure if I can do this and whether or not I need to contact the owner of the content for permission. Any help would be appreciated. Yes, you would need to contact the creators. I'd encourage you to do it, because most of the time, in my experience, people are happy to have their work shared. They would have to agree to release their content under a license that allows reuse, such as Creative Commons - attribution (CC-BY). For the Youtube video, the author could just select that by checking a box, as Youtube now makes that easy. For the animation, you'll have to find out who the author is, and get them to go to the Creative Commons site and use their tools to associate the license with the content. Question regarding Images copyrights

Hi Klortho, my group partner and I are wondering about some copyright info in regards to the use of images on our molecular bio project. Are we allowed to use images from our text? Do the copyright laws allow that? And how do we find out if, for example, an original article from 1994 is open access or if we aren't allowed to use those images? Thank you for your help. What "text" are you referring to? If you mean your textbook, then the answer is probably "no". In general, you have to look to see if there is a license that allows re-use, and that is pretty rare on textbooks. As far as a journal article goes, sometimes those are open access, and sometimes not. Again, you have to look for a license statement. Hi Klortho! I found an image we would like to use at http://www.atdbio.com/content/54/Base-flipping#Base-flipping, on the bottom of the page all I see is Copyright © ATDBio Ltd. 2005-2014, does this mean I will not be able to use the image? Thanks Amontei2 (talk) 20:20, 7 March 2014 (UTC)
You would have to contact the authors, and get them to release the image under either CC-BY or CC-BY-SA license. You'd have to get that in writing. I haven't tried to do this often, so I don't know how likely they'd be to agree. It would probably be easier if you started out by looking for images that are already openly-licensed. Question about finding if image is available for commercial use.

Hi Klortho,

While researching and trying to find images for my article, I found most to be from textbooks or teaching websites. I was wondering if there is no copyright mark imprinted on the picture would it be ok to use or will I need to contact the textbook company? Some of the images from these websites contain very little information on where the image came from. They are great images and far better than any I have found using the websites listed in our unit 6. I was surprised actually to not find that many images that is commerically available on those websites. To give you an example here is a link to a website with a few images that I'm interested in using https://courses.stu.qmul.ac.uk/SMD/Kb/microanatomy/humandev/index.htm. Some images contain the copyright mark and some don't. I just want to make sure the images I choose for my article will be ok use. Please advise. Hi, Tatabox8. No, I'm sorry, but the absence of a copyright indication doesn't mean that you can use an image. By default, creative works are copyright, and have to be assumed to be "all rights reserved". That's why the open-access movement is so important! But, you should be able to find good images for your topic, if you expend a little more time and effort searching for them. If not, one thing that students have done in past courses is to draw their own cartoon images using popular drawing package like Inkscape. Klortho (talk) 16:05, 11 March 2014 (UTC)
Thanks Klortho, I have actually spent over two hours clicking the image links that offer free commercial use pictures and surprisingly there isn't very many free spermatocyte pictures that is not already used in the article. Many are from studies and won't really work for our article. I will probably have to try to draw my own image incorporating all the information I would like in the picture. Hi, again. You wrote, "clicking the image links". What image links? Where?
Here are a couple more suggestions, in case you still have energy to try:
* Try this image search in PMC. Not all of the images there are truly open-access, but a lot are. If you see one you like, you can check to see if it is PLoS or Biomed Central (BMC). Even if not, it might have an okay license; check the article for CC-BY (Creative Commons Attribution) or CC-BY-SA (Creative Commons Attribution Share-alike).
* Try another tack: this search in PMC gives you a list of all the OA articles. Follow the article links if you see a title that looks promising. Make sure to click the "PubReader" link, because that gives you a nice image strip at the bottom, so you can see at a glance what the images are, and hover your mouse to see the full image.
* For either of the above, narrow the search to be more specific by adding terms with "AND ..." (make sure you use all caps)

    • wbEntity and wbUsedEntities JavaScript variables are now cached in the parser cache
    • Ongoing refactoring to get rid of the previously used numeric ID numbers in favor of prefixed IDs
    • Made wbsearchentities aware of previously unquoted percent characters
    • Put some time into fixing longstanding oddities that made the developers cry from time to time
    • Worked on reducing internal usage of EntityContent, in preparation for redirect support
    • Worked on performance issues with JSON dump generation (hopefully we can start generating dumps soon)

How to move content bar

Hi Klortho, I have been working on my wiki Article and trying to rearrange the content bar to after the first section right before the formation of spermatocyte. I'm not sure how to get it to go there. Could you help me out with the command? Thanks in advance!Tatabox8 (talk) 06:10, 23 March 2014 (UTC)

The table of contents is placed automatically, after the "lead" section. The problem you have is that you have added an unnecessary header, "==Spermatocyte==", before the lead, so that the Mediawiki software doesn't recognize it as a lead. In other words, you shouldn't have a header at the very top of your article. Just remove that, and it should be fine. Klortho (talk) 17:06, 23 March 2014 (UTC)

Adding images

Hi Klortho,

If I wanted to use an image from Wikimedia Commons, do I have to download it first and re-upload it? Or is there a way that I can directly link the image to the page? Gkaltam (talk) 17:41, 23 March 2014 (UTC)
No, you just include it the same way, regardless of whether the image is on Wikipedia or Commons.

Here is a blank template that you can just fill in every time you want to put an image somewhere: [[File:FILENAME|thumb|RIGHT/LEFT|SIZEpx|CAPTION]]. For example, the code [[File:Andromeda annotated.png|thumb|right|400px|Andromeda as it appears in the night sky, with the superimposed figure.]] produces the image to the right.

Starting a new article page

The draft page is User:PaleoBioJackie/sandbox, is that right? Please also remind me, when is the last day of Unit 8? I see that in that sandbox, you have quite a few references and an outline. I would feel better if you had some actual content (prose) before moving into the article space. An exciting month of wiki events!

Hello there,

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

Edit Named reference to add a web link

Yes, when you create the reference, add the URL in the "URL" field of the citation dialog box. If it's a reference that you've already added, then you have to add it manually, like this: <ref>{{cite journal|last=Maloney|first=C|title=JATSPack and JATSPAN, a packaging format and infrastructure for the NLM/NISO Journal Archiving Tag Suite (JATS).|journal=Balisage series on markup technologies|date=2011|volume=7|pmid=21866248|url=http://icanhascheezburger.com}}</ref>, which would look like this: [1]

Polysomy article

Hello, Thank you for your suggestions on our polysomy talk page! I updated the wikilinks and I’ve contacted the publisher for the image to inquire about the copyright parameters. Polysomy types pentasomy-decosomy actually do not have wiki links! We will be adding prose from here on out and will water down the lead definitions. Our outline will be expanded upon in great detail with 30+ references by the end of the semester. We will definitely include the chromosomal_duplication article link- thank you for the suggestion! We followed the format for polyploidy which is a B Class article and is a very similar topic. Based on that, we will probably keep the layout for the headings. Hi Klortho, I would like to add a wikitable from the spermatogenesis article under the stages section to our spermatocyte article. I thought it would be helpful for people that look up this topic since ploidy was an issue brought up in both articles and would make that topic more transparent. I did discuss the ploidy in the text, but sometimes people understand better with a table for visual. The orignal table from the aritlce did not have any sources of where they obtain the info from, but I do have a source for the info. I can create my own table, but it would be very similar. I'm not sure if we can copy a table from wiki so, I wanted to check with you first. If it's possible, how would I cite the table?Tatabox8 (talk) 05:50, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

That's a pretty nice table, but I'm inclined to suggest that it's not quite appropriate for your article, because it has a broader scope. It covers all of the stages of spermatogenesis, which includes other cell types, including your specific one, the spermatocyte, but also including others. There are no issues with copyright violation, if you do want to copy content from another article, but the issue really is about keeping the articles distinct and useful: each one should limit it's scope so that there's not too much overlapping info. So if you want to create your own table, go ahead, but keep that in mind. On the other hand, some of the figures in that article definitely might be useful in yours, and I'd encourage you to consider reusing one or more of them, if they can help illustrate your article's content. I'm still debating whether I will add a table, but I would not include the entire table just what is relevant to my article. I do mention ploidy in the article, but I thought a table would give readers the information in another format that may be more helpful to them. Remove named reference

Hi Klortho, I deleted a named reference and now I have cite error in my reference section. How do I remove it? The orignal source website has not responded to me after two weeks of waiting and I found a new credible source with same information.Tatabox8 (talk) 05:34, 8 April 2014 (UTC)

Your named reference was used in two places, and you deleted the version that included all the data, without also deleting the other instance. See this edit. You deleted <ref name=trs>{{cite web|title=....</ref>, but not (later in the article) <ref name=trs />. Note that AnomieBot has fixed it, but filling in the data into the ref tag that you left there. You should check the results to make sure everything's the way you want it, now. If you intended to remove the reference everywhere, then you'll have to delete the one that's still there now. Uploading image

Hello Klortho,

I made a timeline using powerpoint for the Molecular Paleontology article page. As I was rereading the guidelines for uploading images and I saw that it says to try to not use any text? I essentially used the same dates that we have in the history section and was going to cite the sources when I uploaded the image but I just wanted to make sure how to proceed.

Hi Klortho, I added some external links and I was testing them out. When I click on them I am not redirected to the link or website addressed I entered. It goes to an error page. I try coping and pasting the link into the web browser and it works, but when it's associated with wiki it doesn't. Am I doing something wrong? Is there something else I'm suppose to add?   • This Tuesday, April 29, from 2:30 to 5:30 PM, we have the Freer and Sackler edit-a-thon. (Sorry for the short notice!)
  • On Saturday, May 10 we have the Wikipedia APA edit-a-thon, in partnership with the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, from 10 AM to 5 PM.

Washington, DC meetups in June

Greetings!

Wikimedia DC has yet another busy month in June. Whether you're a newcomer to Wikipedia or have years of experience, we're happy to see you come. Here's what's coming up:

  • On Wednesday, June 11 from 7 to 9 PM come to the WikiSalon at the Cove co-working space. Hang out with Wikipedia enthusiasts!
  • Saturday, June 14 is the Frederick County History Edit-a-Thon from 11 AM to 4 PM. Help improve local history on Wikipedia.
  • The following Saturday, June 21, is the June Meetup. Dinner and drinks with Wikipedians!
  • Come on Tuesday, June 24 for the Wikipedia in Your Library edit-a-thon at GWU on local and LGBT history.
  • Last but not least, on Sunday, June 29 we have the Phillips Collection Edit-a-Thon in honor of the Made in America exhibit.

Hi Books & Bytes recipients: The Wikipedia Library has been expanding rapidly and we need some help! We currently have 10 signups for free account access open and several more in the works... In order to help with those signups, distribute access codes, and manage accounts we'll need 2-3 more Account Coordinators.

The Great American Wiknic and other events in July

I am pleased to announce our fourth annual picnic, the Great American Wiknic, will take place at Meridian Hill Park in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, July 13 from 1 to 5 PM (rain date: July 20). We will be hanging out by the statue of Dante Alighieri, a statue that was donated to the park in 1921 as a tribute to Italian Americans. Read more about the statue on Wikipedia. If you would like to sign up for the picnic, you can do so here. When signing up, say what you’re going to bring!

July will also feature the second annual Great American Wiknic in Frederick, Maryland. This year’s Frederick picnic will take place on Sunday, July 6 at Baker Park. Sign up here for the Frederick picnic.

What else is going on in July? We have the American Chemical Society Edit-a-Thon on Saturday, July 12, dedicated to notable chemists, and our monthly WikiSalon on Wednesday, July 16.

Battle of Fort Stevens Edit-a-Thon!

    • Wikibase made a big step forward to finally switch to DataModel 1.0.
    • Improved support for entity IDs bigger than 2 billion (32 bit integer).
    • We had to adapt Wikibase to some major changes (more major than usual, partly caused by discussions at Wikimania) in MediaWiki core: The default Vector skin became it’s own component and the ResourceLoader got some small but important updates.
    • Continued work on refactoring code of the user interface to make it ready for new design

Wikimedia DC invites revolutionaries, free thinkers, and other sundry editors to a DC WikiSalon

The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.

If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.

When: Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
