Speedy deletion nomination of West Osceola Branch Library

Hello Kmmcderm,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged West Osceola Branch Library for deletion, because the article doesn't clearly say why the subject is important enough to be included in an encyclopedia.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

I was a little surprised to see you had already moved this back into the main space. First, when you do a move like that, you should move to the "Article" space. You moved it to the "Wikipedia" space, which is reserved for articles about Wikipedia and Wikipedia policy. No worries, I moved it to the correct location. Second, you had included a bunch of junk from the talk page about why the page should not be deleted; I don't know how that got there but I removed it too. I also resized and moved the photo so that it didn't wipe out the page. Third, and most important, although you added content, you did not add the two most important things an article needs: an explanation of why the subject is notable enough to be worthy of an encyclopedia article, and references to sources backing up that explanation.

Take a look at the article on nearby Hart Memorial Central Library (which, by the way, would make a great model for your article). In its lead paragraph it explains why the library is notable (its special collections), and it has three references. Your article says "Here you can attend classes, have meetings, check out books and DVDs, and a host of other community activities." — just like any other library in the whole world. What's special about the library? If there is something, and you can back it up with sources, the article deserves to stay. If there's not, someone (maybe me) will nominate the article for deletion.

Wikipedia is not a directory of public buildings or community resources. Just because the library exists doesn't mean it deserves an article. You initially asked me to remove my deletion tag because "the West Osceola Branch is different from the other Branches." Looking at your current article I don't see how it's different. Please explain, in the article, with sources. If you need more time, we can always move it back to draft. ubiquity (talk) 16:24, 15 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have to ask you another question. You claim the library photo is your own work. But it also appears on the library website. Did they get it from you? If so, do you have some connection to the library which would create a conflict of interest? ubiquity (talk) 17:06, 15 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Ubiquity. I just checked the page as it is. I had way more information than that. I had hours, times, more history, references. Also, I do not know how it got moved by me, since I get a huge message that said I am not allowed to move it. To anything. I had planned on sending you a message this morning to ask it to be moved, but now I am a little gun shy. Why is my information not being displayed? Obviously it does need a little more work, I want to focus on "friends of the Library" a little bit more, but I do not know what is going on at this point.Kmmcderm (talk) 12:52, 16 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I spotted your comment on Clubjustin4's talk page, and as a retired librarian I thought I'd have a look.

Hmm, problems.

First, article title: Almost always WIkipedia uses plain "Firstname Surname", with no middle initial. If an initial is used, it's followed by a full stop. So "Minnie Oakley" would be better, or "Minnie S. Oakley" (with a redirect from the other).

Secondly, massively more important: You appear to have created the entire article by taking copyright material from other websites. Wikipedia can't accept that. I've nominated the article for speedy deletion on those grounds alone.

Thirdly, you say it's a work in progress: there's a template you can add, {{under construction}}, which tells people that you are still working on the article - but it's best not to start an article in "main space" until you have enough sources and content to show why the person needs to be in Wikipedia.

Fourthly, your item lacks a lead sentence: the normal thing is for the opening sentence to be "Minnie M. Oakley (1861-1915) was a pioneering librarian in Wisconsin, United States, who was inducted to the Wisconsin Library Hall of Fame in 2015." Start with name, dates, and why anyone would want to read about them. That sentence, or whole section, the "lead", comes above any headings (your stub article started with an unnecessary heading).

Have a look at articles about other notable librarians, or people in general, to get the feel for how to structure an article. There's a lot to learn about editing Wikipedia but it's an interesting journey. And there are a lot of us librarians around, editing, making cross-references ("redirects" in wikispeak), and generally being librarianly!

Please read instructions: you removed the "speedy deletion" tag from the article, although it contains words, in bold, telling you not to do so for an article you have created. It also tells you where to comment if you think the article should not be speedily deleted: not the talk page of the person who nominated it for speedy deletion, but the talk page of the article (where it will be read by any admin who is contemplating deleting it). Just read the instructions, please.

Lastly, when you contribute to a talk page, please sign your article using a Wikipedia signature which links to your user page - the easiest way is to type ~~~~. And it's a courtesy to other readers (both the owner of the talk page and passers by) to give a link to the article you're talking about.
