Philosophy question at RD/H[edit]

You are of course correct that the answer is Hegel. Such ideas are omnipresent in his work one of the most major themes - so much so that anyone who doesn't realize this can't be said to understand Hegel at all. (So you clearly understand him better than Clio etc.) Look in a myriad of places in his History of Philosophy. Many of his most famous sentences are relevant - Just from memory - Phenomenology of Spirit - preface - No philosophy that deserves the name can be or ever has been refuted, one can just as well say that a flower refutes the bud. Philosophy of History, introduction - When philosophy begins to paint its grey on grey, some form of life must have grown old. The Owl of Minerva flies at dusk. The whole of his philosophy is devoted to the notion (IMHO quite true) that Philosophy is identical to the History of Philosophy - that each philosophy describes the world as well as the human race can describe its understanding at the time and that the history of philosophy shows mankind pulling himself up by his own bootstraps, building an endless philosophical system as he as discovers conceptual building blocks that help him understand the world as best he can at any given time. Hegel of course felt he was the last word at the time, but was not under the impression that history would stop in 1831. His self assessment in the Phenomenology is that no one knows better than him the defects of his work, but that he knows he was on the right road. Presumably, therefore, you're now saying that you didn't mean the 99% figure to be taken literally. So, what percentage of films do you think are about how white men see themselves? Yes, but that's exactly the point I was trying to make in my last sentence above. It's simply not true to say that white males continue to exert a disproportionate influence in Hollywood. Look at the Hollywood films on general release at any given time. They're about all kinds of experiences; those of women, ethnic minorities, children, immigrants, the elderly, gays... you name it, there's a film about it. You're dealing in academic generalities, not in grounded specifics. I've served my time in academia, and I have no wish to return there or to engage in academic discourse, which with rare exceptions serves no useful purpose whatsoever. Have a look, instead, at the top ten grossing films for 2008, as listed in 2008 in film. There, we have The Dark Knight, Indiana Jones, Iron Man, Hancock and James Bond, all of which are about male superheroes, one of whom is black. The others are white, but do those films depict either lived white experience, or lived male experience? No, they do not. (To take the most obvious example: do the James Bond films support a white male-centric view of the world? No, not at all.) Then we have Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar 2, Wall-E and Narnia, all of which are for children and depict experience as it is lived - or as we fondly imagine it is lived - by kids, animals and robots. Lastly, there is Mamma Mia, a chick flick par excellence. If I cared to, I could continue down the list of films released in 2008. New Rational Skepticism WikiProject member asking for look at Theosophy entry[edit]

Since you are an active participant in the Rational Skepticism WikiProject, would you mind looking over the Wikipedia entry on Theosophy to see if you find any concerns?

I've been ordered to fix the page so that it accords with my understanding of the NPOV policy. I'm happy to do that but I have a lot of work at my job.

Now I've been told that I must make the changes by April 30th or the NPOV tag will be removed. I simply can't learn how to use Wikipedia as a newcomer, become familiar with all the sources, and make the edits if I must do it all by April 30th.

We can put it all back once we get the balance between the blog and the podcast straightened out. Please have a go at expanding and revising the page. More needs to be said about the blog and, perhaps, a little bit less about the podcast. (It is IMHO just a tiny bit bloated.) But use your judgement. I note, also, that Futility Closet has extensively plagiarised at least one Wikipedia article, and a brief study suggests that this is not the only instance. In fact, your exercise in providing publicity to this podcast is the reason why this plagiarism has been brought to light. The plagiarism issue will be dealt with separately elsewhere and in due course, but it seems relevant to mention it here.

Hello! Voting in the 2020 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 7 December 2020. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment.
