Callum Reynolds

[edit]

Hello, "Lasko26". I have read your message at User talk:I dream of horses about the deletions of the article Callum Reynolds, and your request to be able to re-create the article. I have spent some time looking into this, and I have come here to let you know what my conclusions are. Before saying anything else, I will say that I personally do not fully agree with the notability guidelines, but I have tried to assess the draft against the guidelines as they are, not as I would like them to be.

  • I have checked your draft article, its references, the version of the article deleted as a result of the deletion discussion, and that discussion. I have considered how your draft squares up against Wikipedia's notability guidelines and against the reasoning given in the discussion.
  • The most relevant notability guidelines are the general notability guideline and the specific guideline on footballers, WP:NFOOTBALL. WP:NFOOTBALL says that players who have played in any tier 1 international match, as defined by FIFA, are notable, and that players who have played in a fully professional league will "generally be regarded" as notable. The general notability guidelines essentially require a subject to have substantial coverage in multiple significant reliable sources independent of the subject.
  • Parts of what is in your draft was already covered at the time of the deletion discussion, such as the fact that Callum Reynolds played for Portsmouth in the Premier Reserve League. Those parts were determined in the discussion not to constitute evidence of notability in Wikipedia's terms, and nothing has changed about that. Since that discussion, Reynolds's career has moved on. Your draft states that he now plays for Boreham Wood. The opening words of the Wikipedia article Boreham Wood F.C. are "Boreham Wood Football Club is a semi-professional association football club" (My emphasis.) Other teams he has played for don't appear to come near to satisfying WP:NFOOTBALL either: for example, Tamworth is in the sixth tier of English football.
  • There is no question of Reynolds having played in a FIFA tier 1 international match: the England national football C team is certainly not tier 1.
  • I then turned to the general notability guidelines. Some of the references are clearly not independent sources: for example, basingstoketown.net/player-profiles/callum-reynolds. and /www.borehamwoodfootballclub.co.uk/first-team-player-profiles/callum-reynalds are both on web sites of clubs he has played for. (Incidentally, what are we to make of a club which has a web site page about one of its players where the URL doesn't even spell his name right?) Other sources are not substantial coverage: for example, a page at www.crawleynews.co.uk merely includes his name in a squad list, and another reference is merely a photograph, captioned "Arsenal Reserves v Portsmouth Reserves". Also, some of the coverage is only local, which is generally regarded as having little value in establishing notability. By far the best reference, for the purpose of showing notability, is news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/l/luton_town/8171092.stm, which is national coverage in an independent reliable source, and is entirely about Callum Reynolds. However, even that is merely a single news announcement of a signing "on loan", which is not substantial coverage, and one such minor news announcement is not normally regarded as establishing notability.
  • I'm afraid my conclusion has to be that Callum Reynolds still doesn't meet Wikipedia's notability standards, or even come near to doing so, and I don't see any justification for lifting the creation protection. If the article were re-created I cannot see any reasonable prospect of its surviving a second AfD discussion. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 08:56, 6 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm Mattythewhite. I noticed that you made a change to an article, Boreham Wood F.C., but you didn't provide a reliable source. The article Callum Reynolds has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails WP:NFOOTBALL having never played in a fully professional league.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
