Khazars and Rus

Thanks for sending me email about Kievan Rus. I am just starting the wiki editing and still learning. However, since I was born in Ukraine and live there fo many years, I know some about the history of this country. The Kiev has never been part Khazaria, but slavic population of Kiev paid money to Khazars in early 9th century before varangians arrive. The main source about russian history of that time is the The Russian Primary Chronicle (http://web.ku.edu/~russcult/culture/handouts/chronicle_all.html) and the Chronicle says:

6367 (859) The Varangians from beyond the sea imposed tribute upon the Chuds, the Slavs, the Merians, the Ves, and the Krivichians. But the Khazars imposed it upon the Polianians, the Severians, and the Viatichians, and collected a squirrel skin and a beaver skin from each hearth.

With Rurik there were two men who did not belong to his kin, but were boyars. They obtained permission to go to Constantinople with their families. They thus sailed down the Dnieper, and in the course of their journey they saw a small city on a hill. Upon their inquiry as to whose town it was, they were informed that three brothers, Kii, Shchek, and Khoriv, had once built the city, but that since their deaths, their descendants were living there as tributaries of the Khazars. Askold and Dir remained in this city, and after gathering together many Varangians, they established their domination over the country of the Polianians at the same time that Rurik was ruling at Novgorod

In fact Khazars and Rus was a bitter enemies all the time long until Rus king Svatoslav (grandson of varangian Rurik) totaly distroed the capital of Khazaria Itil.

Sviatoslav I of Kiev finally succeeded in destroying Khazar imperial power in the 960s. The Khazar fortresses of Sarkel and Tamatarkha fell to the Rus in 965, with the capital city of Atil following circa 968 or 969. A visitor to Atil wrote soon after the sacking of the city: "The Rus attacked, and no grape or raisin remained, not a leaf on a branch."

Most of russians would be really surprized (if not upset) when you tell them that Khazaria is predesessor of Kievan Rus. This does not make any sence since these many historical and poetical books about wars between khazars and early russians (see the main article about Khazars and Rise of Rus).

The Rus warlords Oleg and Sviatoslav I of Kiev launched several wars against the Khazar khaganate, often with Byzantine connivance.

Pushkin for example wrote a great poem about Rus second king Oleg war with Khazars. The Khazars (see main article) were a semi-nomadic Turkic people who was eventualy distroed by slavic Rus and other neigbors. Innab (talk) 00:03, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi there! Well, first off, I didn't send you any e-mail (maybe that was some other user as I don't know your e-mail address), particularly one regarding Kievan Rus'. However, I did leave a message on your talk page, but that was simply a welcome message. Second, I responded to your above comment (as you left the same comment on this page, your talk page, and the Kievan Rus' talk page) at the Kievan Rus' talk page, but I'll also post it here just in case. I stated: Khazaria certainly was a predecessor of Kievan Rus'. In 882, Prince Oleg of Novgorod revolted against Khazaria and formally established the state known today as Kievan Rus'. Prior to Oleg's revolt, the territory of the future Kievan state was ruled over by the Khazars and the Varangians, but primarily the former. The people of this territory were forced to pay taxes and tribute to the Khazars. Thus, Khazaria was a predecessor of Rus' as: a) the territory that later came to make up Kievan Rus' was ruled by Khazaria; and b) Prince Oleg of Novogorod formally established Kievan Rus' by revolting and declaring independence from Khazaria. Well, according to Russian Primary Chronicle Oleg was Oleg was varangian and a relative of the first ruler, Rurik, and was entrusted by Rurik to take care of both his kingdom and his young son Ingvar, or Igor. Oleg gradually took control of the Dnieper cities, captured Kiev (previously held by the Varangian warlords, Askold and Dir) and finally moved his capital from Novgorod there.

6367 (859). The Varangians from beyond the sea imposed tribute upon the Chuds, the Slavs, the Merians, the Ves', and the Krivichians. But the Khazars imposed it upon the Polyanians, the Severians, and the Vyatichians, and collected a white squirrel-skin from each hearth.
6368–6370 (860–862). The tributaries of the Varangians drove them back beyond the sea and, refusing them further tribute, set out to govern themselves. There was no law among them, but tribe rose against tribe. Discord thus ensued among them, and they began to war one against another. They said to themselves, “Let us seek a prince who may rule over us and judge us according to the Law.” They accordingly went overseas to the Varangian Rus': these particular Varangians were known as Rus', just as some are called Swedes, and others Normans, English, and Gotlanders, for they were thus named. The Chuds, the Slavs, the Krivichians, and the Ves' then said to the people of Rus', “Our land is great and rich, but there is no order in it. Come to rule and reign over us.” They thus selected three brothers, with their kinsfolk, who took with them all the Rus' and migrated. The oldest, Rurik, located himself in Novgorod; the second, Sineus, at Beloozero; and the third, Truvor, in Izborsk. On account of these Varangians, the district of Novgorod became known as the land of Rus'. The present inhabitants of Novgorod are descended from the Varangian race, but aforetime they were Slavs.

6378–6387 (870–879). On his deathbed, Rurik bequeathed his realm to Oleg, who belonged to his kin, and entrusted to Oleg’s hands his son Igor', for he was very young.
6388–6390 (880–882). Oleg set forth, taking with him many warriors from among the Varangians, the Chuds, the Slavs, the Merians and all the Krivichians. He then came to the hills of Kyiv, and saw how Askold and Dir reigned there. He hid his warriors in the boats, left some others behind, and went forward himself bearing the child Igor'. He thus came to the foot of the Hungarian hill, and after concealing his troops, he sent messengers to Askold and Dir, representing himself as a stranger on his way to Greece on an errand for Oleg and for Igor', the prince’s son, and requesting that they should come forth to greet them as members of their race. Askold and Dir straightway came forth. Then all the soldiery jumped out of the boats, and Oleg said to Askold and Dir, “You are not princes nor even of princely stock, but I am of princely birth.” Igor' was then brought forward, and Oleg announced that he was the son of Rurik. They killed Askold and Dir, and after carrying them to the hill, they buried them there, on the hill now known as Hungarian, where the castle of Ol'ma now stands. Over that tomb Ol'ma built a church dedicated to St. Nicholas, but Dir’s tomb is behind St. Irene’s. Oleg set himself up as prince in Kyiv, and declared that it should be the mother of Rus' cities. The Varangians, Slavs, and others who accompanied him, were called Rus'. Oleg began to build stockaded towns, and imposed tribute on the Slavs, the Krivichians, and the Merians.

So there is no way Oleg would "declare undependence from Khazars" since he was a Novgorod leader of Varangians and was never under control of Khazars.

First off, after gaining and securing power in Novgorod, Oleg traveled south to Kiev in 882, which, at the time, was controlled by Khazaria. There, he declared the city's independence from Khazarian rule and its unification with Novogorod, and moved his kingdom's capital from Novgorod to Kiev. This is generally recognized as the formal establishment of Kievan Rus', not when Rurik or Oleg took power in Novgorod years before. Second, Kiev was not a Varangian city during the mid-to-late 800's, but was a Khazarian one. Kiev was conquered by Khazaria in circa 840; prior to that, it was controlled by numerous East Slavic tribes at different periods of time, including the Varangians. However, the Varangians had not controlled Kiev for at least forty-to-fifty years prior to Oleg's capture of the city. Third, while the Russian Primary Chronicle is a well-respected primary source, it has been criticized as being biased towards a sort-of pro-Russian viewpoint, and generally conflicts with other chronicles of the time that discuss these events, such as the Novgorod, Kiev, East Slavic, and Byzantine Chronicles, which, on the other hand, usually agree with one another. So, I disagree with your assertion that the Russian Primary Chronicle is "the main source about russian history of that time", and believe that there are numerous other credible primary sources from that time. Innab (talk) 07:34, 9 February 2010 (UTC) Ok, I will agree to call Khazaria a "predecessor" in term of control of some territory that later came to make up Kievan Rus', but paying mandatory "tribute" did not mean that Kiev belonged to Khazaria as a full-right member city, it rather was wage of defeat. Chronicle said that "The Varangians, Slavs, and others who accompanied him, were called Rus". Khazarians was forced to withdraw from Kiev, and later been destroyed by Rus and other neigbours.

Then, on the next page that comes up, type the title "IPoDWDM" (as that will be the article's name) into the box labeled "To new title", and type "Moving the page from the user space into the article space." into the box labeled "Reason" (as that's the reason why you're moving the page). Then, click the button labeled "Move Page" and WALLAH! The page is now an article! In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, review the recent Wikipedia Day NYC, plan for the next stages of projects like Wikipedia at the Library and Lights Camera Wiki, and hold salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects, for example User:ScienceApologist will present on "climate change, alternative medicine, UFOs and Transcendental Meditation" (see the November meeting's minutes).

In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and generally enjoy ourselves and kick back. And if the weather is good, we'll have a star party with the telescopes on the roof of Pupin Hall!

Thank you for responding so quickly. Here's the story:

One Kind of Footnoting Sample: The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.[Ref 1] Amazingly few discotheques provide jukeboxes.[Ref 2] How razorback-jumping frogs can level six piqued gymnasts.[Ref 3] 1. ^ This is the lazy dog reference. 2. ^ This is the jukeboxes reference. 3. ^ This is the jumping frogs reference. I’m confused, because I’m used to footnoting college and research papers, MLA style. Which Wikiway do you find the easiest? And can you please explain it as though for a third grader?! Including notating them as you write the article. Because after this article, I plan others. Also, the subject of the article does not seem to have his birth date documented in any secondary or tertiary source. He gave it to me personally. What do I do? And – he co-produced and wrote the script for a Kennedy Center production, but the only documentation I have is the program which lists his credits. I plan to include an image of it that can be read. He does have a blog that tells his life story without his birthday, including his Emmy work & the Kennedy Center even among others. http://billangelos.typepad.com/my_weblog/ And he has documentaries on YouTube.

I have completed a short summary (about 6 short paragraphs) + Bibliography - 17 entries - that I could send you, but I didn't know if that's appropriate on a Talk Page. The footnoting is the last thing before I request review.

Footnoting on Wikipedia is actually relatively simple. After a sentence or a phrase that you wish to have cited, place the template <ref> ... </ref>, with the bibliographic information where the ellipsis is. To have the reference be shown within the article, create a "References" or "Footnotes" sectionat towards the bottom of the page after all of the text with the template <reflist> in it, and the references will be listed automatically. In the Bridging Science, Philosophy and Cognition section, it reads thusly, and this is the full extent of the section:

In 1959, his wife Saral recommended to him a book she had seen in the library by the speaker on life subjects, Jiddu Krishnamurti. Bohm found himself impressed by the way his own ideas on quantum mechanics meshed with the seemingly-philosophical ideas of Krishnamurti. Bohm's approach to philosophy and physics receive expression in his 1980 book Wholeness and the Implicate Order, and in his 1987 book Science, Order and Creativity. Isn't this against Wiki policy? Plus, no source is cited. Not only that, but the information is very incomplete, and misleading. I'm writing a replacement. But meanwhile, is there some kind of label or other action that can be taken to alert readers?

You're exactly right: that's pretty blatant copyright violation, plagiarism, POV, and promotion of that product. The best thing to do is to immediatly remove that section from the article until you've finished writing the replacement then put the replacement back into the article. Nice work spotting that! I am Peter Godwin. People keep reverting my edits on my page. Here is what I wrote on the page as a warning- which they ignored. It explains the problem. I need to have control over strangers writing fiction about my life and career (they originally had me born in Germany- I was born in London and have never even lived in Germany- one example of many.) I will try to remember to log in before I start any work.

Hi there! As for as I know of, there's no way that you could change those IP addresses to your user account. The easiest thing to do at home is to just click the "Remember Me" box, so you'll always be logged in. However, if you're editing at work or on any other public computer, don't click "Remember Me", as others may be able to access you're account, espeically if you don't log out. Cereals - too many pages?

I was answering a question for a friend and found pages (or are they called "entries"?) for several topics - Semolina, Cream of Wheat, Malt-O-Meal Company, Wheatena, that seem to me would belong under the heading/title "Cereals". Hi there! First of all, they are officially and usually called articles, but pages and entires can be used as synonyms. Second, you can make any change you want, provided that they improve the article and the encyclopedia as a whole. Third, I'm not quite sure what specific changes you're suggesting to make; would you mind repeating it in different words so that I can catch on? Fourth, the way to make those changes is pretty simple, just click the edit button right above the text of the article, make your changes to the article, then click save, just like you did on this page. Hi to you. Side note: Does your response mean you have "adopted" me or is adoption not that formal?
Re the cereal question:
  1. There is a fairly complete article on "Cereal".
  2. "Semolina" is a cereal product usually made from wheat.
  3. Cream of Wheat, Wheatena and Farina are all Brand name items sold in grocery stores.
  4. Malt-O-Meal Company is a company and the article is about the company.
From what I've learned so far, number four clearly does not belong as a standalone article and barely would qualify for inclusion in the "Cereal" article, number three could be included in the "Cereal" article as examples of cereal products but I don't think they qualify for standalone articles, number two, "semolina" clearly, at least to me, belongs under the Cereal Title.
So am I right in these suppositions?
And if so, how do I "move" an article? Cut and paste? or is there a more sophisticated tool?--Ngstanton (talk) 23:19, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
