Getting started

[edit]

Hi, Lucy, and welcome to editing Wikipedia. I have posted an answer to your message on my talk page, where I have given you a little advice on getting started. I hope that will be useful to you. Also, I am posting here some links to pages which my help you to learn how to edit Wikipedia. Don't try to read and learn all of them, because there is far too much there to take in, but do have a look and see if some of the pages have information which is helpful to you, and of course you can always come back to them later when other things become relevant to what you are doing. I can not edit a page. Please assist me. Lcmorleans (talk) 22:26, 22 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • What page is it that you want to edit? The page where you posted this message is for discussions related to editing the article Internet Relay Chat, which is not locked, so that can't be the one you mean. Since I don't know which page your message should be on, I am moving it here, and giving you some information on what to do about it.
  • You need to say what edit you would like to make, as otherwise any other editor who reads your request for help won't know what help to give you.
  • You are lucky that I came along and saw your message, as it might well have been that nobody saw it for years. If you post a request for help on a talk page there are templates you can use to alert other editors to your request, so that sooner or later someone will come along and answer it. For most edit-protected pages the message you see if you try to edit says that the page is "semi-protected", so that only autoconfirmed users can edit it. If that is so you should post {{Edit semi-protected}} on the talk page of the article you want to edit. (For example, if you wanted to edit the article John Travolta then you would post it at Talk:John Travolta.) Underneath that you should state what help you need, making sure you say exactly what change you think should be made and why: it is a mistake to expect other editors to put work in trying to work out what you want done. If the page is fully protected, so that only administrators can edit it, you should do the same except that you should use {{Edit fully-protected}} instead of {{Edit semi-protected}}, and for pages with extended confirmed protection use {{edit extended-protected}}. I hope that is helpful to you. JamesBWatson (talk) 20:31, 24 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
