But I quickly discovered something in which helped change things. Naturally this just isn't true for all, or even a lot of cases. But it may help correct difficulties with a few students which were overlooked in the system. As any teacher of at-risk students, one regarding my primary concerns is reading. Students who have trouble with reading do poorly in all subject matter. I had a student come if you ask me with a fifth grade reading stage. He was almost 17 years outdated. Let's call him Johnny. Johnny has been a teacher's nightmare. He was deafening and disruptive. The worst time with the day was when the class started out any activity which involved reading. Determined to repair I tried everything I could consider. Nothing worked. I looked at his / her records. No problems that I can find. His home life was pretty excellent and both parents were very a part of school. Johnny, it seemed, just failed to care. I began to watch your pet more closely. I tested him for reading difficulties thinking that perhaps he never mastered the essentials of phonics, or that his sight word vocabulary was so small which it was interfering with his decoding expertise. He did very well on every one of the tests and surprisingly was very cooperative. Johnny wanted help and I was now determined to discover a way to help this student. As i continued my battery of tests I begun to pay more attention to Johnny's gestures. I knew from experience that it may tell me a lot about Arthur. I could not believe what My partner and i was seeing. I have to inform you that over all Johnny was any bright boy. In discussions he could answer questions and knew about numerous subjects. He was good in math but cannot work through a word problem. It made no sense if you ask me, until that day. The day I begun to read Johnny and not the guides about teaching reading or the analyze results. "Johnny, " I asked. "Have you ever had your eyes tested? " His answer was yes understanding that he had glasses at home. When questioned why he left them in the home he just shrugged and muttered which he didn't know. But I had my own suspicions. You see, Johnny was an exceptionally overweight teen with severe acne. This individual was clumsy, always seeming to vacation on things, and even in freshly washed and also pressed clothing he always looked somewhat sloppy. But Johnny didn't seem to see his appearance. He was always the particular class clown and always had any smile on his lips. But I pointed out that often it didn't reach his face. And I could relate. As a young adult I struggled with weight and acne and I knew the way to laugh to cover my embarrassment. Once i got glasses the taunts increased. I knew the thing that was wrong and I had an notion of how to fix it. I referred to as Johnny's parents and discussed my tips. The following week Johnny came to class along with his usual smile, but this time, any time he looked towards me I seen it reached his eyes. Something has been different. During class Johnny was not his / her usual disruptive self and he seemed anxious to access the day's reading assignment. He wasn't squinting on the board either, but he didn't have got glasses on. Ah! Contact lenses. His / her parents had listened and gotten your pet fitted. And, suddenly Johnny could examine. He wasn't suddenly tenth grade stage reader, but he was reading several grade levels above where he previously been and with little difficulty. He was will no longer disruptive during class and Johnny approved his tenth grade basic skills analyze, FCAT in Florida, with a score well above that needed to pass. Obviously this is only one story then one success. But the point is never to applaud me, if anyone deserves the credit it will be Johnny. The lesson I learned will be first, never to assume when it concerns a student, and never be afraid to dig deeper to get the core of a problem. I also learned that we often overlook the obvious inside our zeal to fix the kid. Johnny will graduate high-school in 2010. He plans to go on to college and contains lost about 50 pounds over the summertime. Johnny changed his life when he made a decision to trust in just one more trainer. I am blessed that was given as his teacher because he taught me far more than I probably taught him. And I am hoping this lesson and Johnny's story may help others overcome obstacles to their studying. One word of advice to mom and dad and teachers. Be sure you exclude health issues such as needing spectacles, or other physical causes of issues. I don't mean run out and put a kid on medications because they aren't flawlessly behaved, but at least take enough time to look more closely. Every child desires to succeed.
