August 2021[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that your username, "Lesabot", may not meet Wikipedia's username policy because only robot accounts are permitted to have usernames that include the term "bot". If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. As an alternative, you may ask for a change of username by completing the form at Special:GlobalRenameRequest, or you may simply create a new account for editing. Thank you. - Ahunt (talk) 18:19, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

My name is "le sabot", which is French for "the shoe" Lesabot (talk) 18:54, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It is still unfortunately confusing in this setting. Would you be objectionable to a space being added to help clarify or picking another username? If not, I could rename the account for you to "le sabot" (or anything else you desire). --TheSandDoctor Talk 21:35, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It's my handle on tons of things and I'd prefer to maintain a unified identity Lesabot (talk) 21:47, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It is a hard and fast Wikipedia policy: WP:MISLEADNAME: The following types of username are not permitted because they may be misleading in a way that disrupts the project: ... Usernames that could be easily misunderstood to refer to a "bot" (which is used to identify bot accounts) or a "script" (which alludes to automated editing processes), unless the account is of that type. - Ahunt (talk) 00:24, 15 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It's not easily confused if you speak French. Lesabot (talk) 00:49, 15 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
This is English Wikipedia. - Ahunt (talk) 00:55, 15 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Look, I'm not changing my username. If you are so enraged by me using a name because you are easily confused, you can escalate it however you think is appropriate. I'm sure I can figure out how to cancel my recurring donation. Lesabot (talk) 01:02, 15 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It has already been escalated. The editor above, @TheSandDoctor: is an admin, so he will take whatever action next he deems appropriate. - Ahunt (talk) 01:19, 15 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Cool man. Love to contribute time and money to such a welcoming space. Lesabot (talk) 01:24, 15 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
For what it's worth, this username appears to be prohibited on the French Wikipedia as well, if I am reading fr:WP:NUI (item 16) correctly.
The rules concern whether someone would be easily confused. It would take a particularly gormless individual to be confused by my name. The `bot' isn't a suffix, it's just straight part of a word. Just like someone named `bottle' wouldn't be easily confused. Lesabot (talk) 21:30, 21 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

VINDICATED!

they aren't being bot-like and their explanation/translation is reasonable.

HATERS STAY MAD!!!Lesabot (talk)

@Ahunt: I'll take that apology as soon as you get around to it... Lesabot (talk) 12:06, 22 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have nothing to apologize for. My interactions with you have been polite and in accordance with all Wikipedia policies. I was following Wikipedia policy in leaving you a note that stated I noticed that your username, "Lesabot", may not meet Wikipedia's username policy because only robot accounts are permitted to have usernames that include the term "bot". It was then up to an admin to assess this for possible action, which was done, and he declined. I consider the matter closed with his decision. - Ahunt (talk) 12:23, 22 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Except that isn't what the rules say at all. That link says Usernames that could be easily misunderstood to refer to a "bot" (which is used to identify bot accounts) or a "script" (which alludes to automated editing processes), unless the account is of that type. but you continue to lie about it. And then, when you didn't get your way the first time you pestered the mods AGAIN because you were so sad that they didn't take your side. I'm glad you have staked out your petty kingdom and will spare no ends to defend it. I didn't expect an apology, that would certainly have been too reasonable. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lesabot (talkcontribs)
Please note that your talk page post above was not very civil. Wikipedia requires that contributors be civil to make collaborating to build the encyclopedia possible. In future please be more polite in your posts. Thank you. - Ahunt (talk) 12:43, 22 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, you're correct, I should not have been baited into responding to your repeated lies about the rules. I would ask in the future that you not lie to others. And, again, I'll take that apology as soon as you want to offer it (but I'm not holding my breath) Lesabot (talk) 12:49, 22 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
For what it's worth, demanding a forced apology can mark you out as a contentious user and do more harm than good, see WP:APOLOGY. Reading this thread, Ahunt has expressed a genuine concern over an ambiguous username (On this Wikipedia, "lesa bot" is a more natural reading than "le sabot"), and had used neutral language throughout. However Lisabot has been distinctly uncivil and prone to wild accusations. Such uncivility would not be tolerated on any other page than this one. I am not adding this page to my watchlist and I will not be coming back here; please do not bring your discussion over to my talk page either. — Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 15:29, 22 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Comment Lesabot may be well within their rights, but his/her behaviour does come off as a little bit immature and aggressive... we're just a community Driftrich (talk) 15:36, 22 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ahunt has expressed a genuine concern over an ambiguous username - no, they didn't. They demonstrably fabricated the wording on a rule and then complained when a mod told them to buzz off. Normally when someone lies in order to try and get their way and get called out they at least have the common courtesy to apologize. Some people just lack that basic dignity Lesabot (talk) 15:49, 22 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Things are getting a bit heated here. Let's try and cool things down a bit. Ahunt's initial message was placed using a template called uw-username and is a standard message left on accounts where the username is suffixed "bot". The username policy has a section dealing with misleading usernames which states that usernames that "may be misleading in a way that disrupts the project" are not permitted and specifically states "Usernames that could be easily misunderstood to refer to a "bot" (which is used to identify bot accounts) or a "script" (which alludes to automated editing processes), unless the account is of that type." fall under this. When I first came across your account in the list up for review, I almost blocked your account due to reading it, as Steelpillow stated, as "Les bot"; however, I checked this page first and saw a discussion had started and chose to participate instead. I understand where your confusion and frustration is coming from, but everyone here has a rational footing.
Please review the civility policy and the policy on personal attacks. Repeated (or egregious) personal attacks and incivility can be cause for a block; this applies to all editors of the English Wikipedia. Please also see Wikipedia:Casting aspersions. Please note that none of this is meant as a threat, merely making you aware of the policies as it is reasonable for a new user to have not stumbled across them yet. I am here if you have any questions. --TheSandDoctor Talk 17:22, 22 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@TheSandDoctor: My issue is with the included wording only robot accounts are permitted to have usernames that include the term "bot" which is not part of the actual rules as stated. It was entirely fabricated; a lie. I suppose I could just delete the lie, but that does nothing to combat that lie being repeated in the future. I was hoping that I would get a sincere apology and then everything would be water under the bridge.Lesabot (talk) 17:38, 22 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
