Hello, Lolahothot, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Hi Lola,

Welcome to Wikipedia. Being an honor roll student, you may find Wikipedia an engaging and interesting community but please remember that the primary purpose is to build an encyclopedia.

I notice from your contribution history that you have made a number of comments on article talk pages (e.g. avian flu, cloning, Christianity) that might be more in the way of general discussion than specifically about editing the associated article page.

If your questions on avian flu and cloning contribute to improving the articles on those subjects, then great. But please do not ask questions just for your own personal knowledge. Answers.com has a WikiAnswers for this sort of thing.

Wikipedia policy is that article talk pages are for discussing edits to the article. I know that this rule may not be consistently observed and many talk pages may wander off into unrelated discussion. Enforcement of this rule is inconsistent but there is a reason for the rule.

Wikipedia is not a discussion forum. You may find it useful to read WP:NOT for a fuller explanation of Wikipedia is not.

I hope you will find Wikipedia to be a fun and rewarding community. Please don't take this message as being harsh. It's not intended that way. Many new users are not aware of this policy.

If you have any questions about this or any other aspect of Wikipedia, you can leave a message on Wikipedia:Village pump (help) or at the help desk. Or just type {{helpme}} on this page with an explanation of the kind of help you need. Or feel free to ask me. Just leave a message on my Talk Page.

Again, welcome and happy editing.

The number one cause of atheism[edit]

Moved here from Talk:Christianity. Wikipedia is not a blog or a general discussion forum. Please do not use article talk pages for discussions which are not directly germane to the editing of the article. --Richard 16:20, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"The Greatest Single Cause of Atheism in the World Today is Christians, Who Acknowledge Jesus with their Lips, and Walk out the Door and deny Him by their Lifestyles."

-anonymous

I found this quote online. I'm not trying to offend anyone. What are your thoughts?? Lolahothot 01:46, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • My thoughts are that the quote completely misses the point. The greatest cause of Atheism in the world is people not believing that there is a god. What do Christians and their behaviour have to do with it? What would be the logic... "Hey, have you ever noticed that lots of supposed Christians don't lead very nice lives? Makes me wonder of there really is a god!"??? Leeborkman 02:07, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think the quote is outdated because it was probably coined in a different era. There was a time a thousand years ago when the Catholic Church was the only game in town (for the Western World) and hypocrisy and corruption in the organized church hierarchy would cause some people to look for an alternative and finding none, would claim to be atheist or agnostic.

Since that time, people have found Protestantism, non-denominationalism, Eastern religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism and Tao, Wicca and New Age spiritualism. Humans seem to have an innate urge to seek the spiritual. They may find the answer to their spiritual quest in many ways or they may be truly atheist. I doubt that hypocrisy is the number one cause of atheism any more. I think the main reason is the teaching of liberal arts and social science that assert either mechanistic explanations of human behavior or secular humanism over theistic explanations.

I should also point out that the quote is not necessarily an argument in favor of atheism. It could also be a call to Christians to live their faith. Faith without works is dead.

I really like that. Thank you. :) Lolahothot 23:35, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Probable, but that's assuming that it's in that kind of era. Perhaps it was in a era of dumbed-down protestant christianity where everyone just went to church on sundays and lived the other six days as carefree citizens? Or maybe it was during the Great Depression, when christianity (as a whole) just didn't cut it to alleviate their suffering? Point put foward: don't make the biggest elephants the scapegoat for your theories. Ariedartin JECJY Talk 17:43, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I am an atheist because I a m not dumb enough to beleive there is some god shit. People need to think, we are just pieces of protons, neutrons, and electrons.... not some created shit by a higher being. Eveyone's going to die and that's it, the end, whammo. No more, nothing, nada. Life is nothing more than your mind trying to piece a whole of of electrival nerve impulses... why the fuck do people think everything's so orderly and controlled??? Your photo[edit]

I had to delete your image because you claimed it was copyrighted when you uploaded it, but it wasn't being used in any articles. Obviously, I suspect it was an image you created yourself: if this is the case, and you want to upload it again, please choose a free license for it, like "public domain" or "GFDL" from the drop-menu. Also, welcome to Wikipedia - if you upload the photo again, I can help you get it to display properly, just leave me a note on my talk page. Mangojuicetalk 14:11, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
