Incorrect normalization in Image:Synthesis square.gif[edit]

Hi, I noticed that you were the one who created this animation. Overall, it's a great illustration, but there is clearly an error in the normalization: the Fourier series must converge to the square wave, except at the point of discontinuity. In the image, your Fourier series is clearly converging to a square wave with a slightly smaller amplitude.

It looks like you chose the normalization so that the first harmonic has the same amplitude as the square wave, when actually the first harmonic should be slightly larger.

Can you please post a corrected plot? Thanks!

I really did make an effort to retain the representation of your user name you seemed to prefer, namely Ҡi∊ff]]⌇; but seemingly this was not appreciated (since you changed it). I'm fairly new to Wikipedia (though not to mathematics), whence I do not know quite what is comme il faut. sines[edit]

I think your questions about other ways of generating waveforms with iterated sines interesting. I found an iterated FM waveform that is somewhat like a saw wave (but not as sharp), that you might want to look at.

F_{0}(x)=\sin {x}

F_{i+1}(x)=\sin {(x+F_{i}(x))}

But also this can be smoothly varied with a sine quite easily by attenuating the offset:

F_{0}(x)=\sin {x}

F_{i+1}(x)=\sin {(x+cF_{i}(x))}

Which becomes a sine wave as c approaches zero, and becomes interestingly chaotic as c becomes greater than 1.

I'm thinking I could actually find an FM solution for a real saw wave (or an arbitrary wave), but I'll need some time to figure it out.

I also notice that you were interested in making a sin wave from square waves, which is an interesting idea. Ultimately, I believe it is impossible to do so in the manner you were attempting, but you asked then about the Fourier series, and whether it could work with things other than sine functions. Someone there mentioned that any "orthogonal basis" could be used, which isn't completely true. Harmonic square waves are orthogonal, but they're not a "complete orthogonal system" (in the Lebesgue sense). Basically, you need to be able to approximate any given continuous segment with your function, but with square waves this is impossible. You can approximate any given point, but in order to approximate a curve, you would need to introduce another square wave that puts a discontinuity in the middle of that approximated curve, and furthermore, any new wave you add that could better accomodate that curve adds new discontinuities. Anything that you can use for a fourier transform, on the other hand, can do so without the discontinuities. There are other ones than sin and cos; I've heard of a Fourier-Bessel series, and a Fourier-Legendre series, but I don't know offhand what they are used for. (Another way of looking at it is that sine and cosine have the relationship that any phase offest of a sine is equivalent to the sum of an appropriate sine and cosine. You can't do this with a square wave; there is no way to change the phase using just a square and a "cosquare".)

You could, however, make a sine wave out of an infinite number of square waves of the same period with variable phase and amplitude (or any function that repeates its first half in the second half as a negative), but this isn't any kind of Fourier series. (By combining a square wave with phase 0.1, with a negative square wave with phase 0.2, you get a pulse from 0.1 to 0.2, and its negative reflection in the second half of the cycle, with enough pulses in a fine enough interval, you can make any function with that same kind of symmetry).

I thought I'd offer a slightly different approximation to the sine using squares than yours. In this case I am still using the odd harmonics, but in this case,

\sin {x}\approx {\frac {\sqrt {2}}{2}}\sum _{n=1}^{\infty }{\frac {C_{n}S((2n-1)x)}{2n-1}}

Where S is the square wave function, and C_n is +1 or -1 depending on whether:

C=+,-,-,-,-,-,-,+,-,-,+,-,+,-,+,-...

In this way, I am trying to keep the total sum around the fixed zero points somewhere near zero (so essentially, I am trying to approximate the sine wave by using the usual 1/n odd harmonics, but also trying to keep the two areas around 0 and pi well behaved. It ends up looking like this:

The bad areas around pi/2 and 3pi/2 don't really grow much more than that... I'm not sure if they'd tend to infinity, but I don't think so. At least, they get really, really insignificant after a while. If the C series is unreadable, think of it as a recurrance relationship:

I vaguely remember you asking for suggestions for mathematical images to do a while back, so here are a couple of possibilities:

Lakes of Wada could do with a picture (of the lakes of Wada).
Wilkinson's polynomial could do with an animation of how the roots move in the complex plane as the coefficient of x^19 is changed.

I found a crude picture of the lakes of Wada in J. G. Hocking, G. S. Young, Topology ISBN 0486656764 on page 144, but it's probably not that much use to you. An animation of the lakes growing day by day would be even better than a picture, but this may not be worth the effort, as it's a rather obscure topic. Gimbal lock figure[edit]

A single gimbal mount can be a semicircle, rather than a full circle. This may simplify the figure and make the essential features easier to notice.

The essence of physical gimbal lock is that the inner and outer axes become aligned, so that the body is free to rotate around two independent axes, but no longer around three. The essence of mathematical gimbal lock is a topological problem, discussed in this thread from news:comp.graphics.algorithms. I assume you wish to illustrate the physical version.

An inability to rotate in a certain way is a tactile phenomenon, not a visual one. A static illustration could simply show the aligned situation that corresponds to lock. An animation might show the effect of wiggling each axis in turn in a configuration away from lock, and then contrast that with a locked configuration.

I hope you won't take it the wrong way when I say that it's really messy to have four or five versions of an animation all on one page. Graphics Lab[edit]

Brazilian Portuguese Hitchhiker's fan site?[edit]

Well, first of all, I added the Brazilian Portuguese in that list because, as I understood, the paragraph was mentioning relevant websites from past and present.

That being said, no, I don't have a link. Not officially (but check my historical page of it). Milliways Brasil is dead. Since Milliways was the first and only DNA\HHGG website from Brazil and existed for a year with quite a few followers, I thought it qualified for the mention. I was the owner, by the way. When I was promoting the movie, the book and Douglas Adams around here, I even started a "Towel Campaign" in which people would attent to theaters with their towels (it included 42 good, humorous reasons to do so.) Back then, I was having at least 36 different Brazilian blogs linking to the website, plus some Orkut links. I think it was notable enough around here (considering the minimal fanbase we had back then), and I had a few official contacts, like the Brazilian Portuguese official book translator and the Brazilian distribution manager at Buena Vista International - who actually sent me 5 shiny Brazilian posters before anyone else. Given all this, I thought it qualified for the list (but I may be biased, of course), so I mentioned the Brazilian Portuguese language fansite on the list, even if it doesn't exist anymore.

How to make animations[edit]

Hi Kieff,

I saw some of your animations. So far I have made a number of 2D-animations, such as the ones in the rotational-vibrational coupling article. I also have a website of my own, this article contains some of my attempts at semi-3D animations.

I would love to create animations for the mass flow meter article, animations that match or surpass the quality of the animations on the website of a manufacturer of mass flow meters, for example the curved tube mass flow meter animation.

Nice to see you're interested in POV-Ray, it's quite a nice program, especially for those into mathematics and programming. :)

The thing is, POV-Ray is a lot more low-level than most people realize. You have to get your hands in a lot of math to make things move nicely and look nicely, which is exciting and challenging. But since we're talking mostly about diagrams and models here, most animations won't be too complex.

Generally, I want control over what the program does rather than extensive automation. For example, I write my website in HTML. Using a WYSIWYG editor doesn't suit my way of thinking around problems. So the fact that in using POV-ray I must get my hands in the math will suit me, I think.

well compared to most people in my family i have perhaps the best vision when it comes to a dark room. its quite weird to explain but i can see figures and shapes in a really dark room while my other family members cant. however when it comes to light i cannot stand being in it for too long. if i step outside in a sunny day i get dizzy sometimes. if there are to many lights on during night time i cannot stand to see a light turned on for a prolonged time. on computer screens or anything that reflects lights like the color you showed it just burns into me for a good 5 minuets. everytime i blink i see the image and well its quite annoying Maverick423 02:49, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How's this:

Here, time-chopped packets of white light consisting of the entire color spectrum enter a prism. Shorter wavelengths (blue and violet) travel slower in the glass medium than do longer wavelengths like red. Consequently, shorter wavelengths are refracted (bent) more than longer ones. This prism effect causes the light to disperse and fan out into a rainbow-like spectrum that separates the colors. For each packet of white light entering the prism, a color-smeared packet of light exits the prism. Because light travels slower in glass than in air, the packets necessarily bunch up inside the prism and only resume their normal speed (and spacing) after exiting it. A very brief flash of white light entering the prism will be “chirped” (smeared out over time based on frequency) after passing through a prism; red will arrive to an observer first, and violet last. This chirping effect can be seen when a column of colors, as they first diverge inside the prism, increasingly shears forward.

I think this version of the graphic is also useful, but the white dots should have the same size as the colored ones (wrong idea of the model like this). It would be nice, if you could change that. Skyscraper Illustrations created with MS Paint[edit]

My name is Stefan and thanks for your feedback at the MS Paint Page, I am the webmaster and owner and the illustrator of SkyScrapers.org, I was wondering if there could be a reason why you deleted my page/link? The drawings were really drawn with MS Paint - initially. Is it because there was a slight rendering with PhotoPaint? (Slight clouds and reflections)

P.S When I showed my projects/illustrations many did not believed it was drawn with MS Paint, I even anti-aliased the jagged pixel lines in MS Paint too. Those really took a long time. :-)

Thanks for your reply. I'm definately fine with it! I can see you're busy too. There are a few things that I would like to clear up and verify it to you.

1. The files have to be slightly more compressed than usual becuase those will be uploaded into the Internet, and the use of less bandwidth is curcial. The original source files are drawn in bitmap.bmp in MS Paint, each of the .bmp file sizes are approximately 50 - 90mb. You can't judge quality just by looking at the previews, tried and tested, I wouldn't recommend GIF, as the colours are limited to 256 tones and people with the sharp eye will be able to spot some gradient dithering colours in rough "band-like" gradient. PNG will be like approximately 2.5 times larger than exported JPEGs and load longer in the Internet, even though they're in looped or interlaced loading patterns. They are then exported into EPS or TIFF for printing purposes or uses in various magazine/merchandise resources for the fullest quality. There is a technique to anti-alise in MS Paint, provided if you're ready to to do that patiently for a long time doing that procedure. All you have to do is to simply switch colours with the colour palette and change the RGB values gradually, pixel by pixel, till it matches to another colour. Repeat this step till 2 colour fades to another gradient - This process can take a long time. All you have to do next is to Mask out, copy and paste and repeat. However, I have also mentioned that I used Corel PhotoPaint to help anti-alised some areas more smoothly, and with the touch of clouds and rendering in my first post.

2. I understand and it's completely normal, yep. Seeing is beliving. People have approached me whether if this is for real and I'm fine with it. :-) I don't know how can I have ways of proving it to you that I initially draw them in MS Paint, (Unless If I have a video tutorial :-) ) you're just judging/looking because of its massive size and detail. If you look at the largest resolutions (Lagre Size) I did not drawn them in that scale, they are even slightly larger than that. So all I have to do is to resize them in Adobe Photoshop or Corel PhotoPaint and label them as large prints. I will never show the original dimensions of source to the public, as they are drawn in MS Paint. For it's massive size and detail, it's all the work of Copy and Paste, and each window detail could take up 2 weeks to draw proportionately to scale in MS Paint, pixel by pixel using the Pencil Tool. Most of these drawings sometimes even took nearly 6 month - to nearly one year to finish on MS Paint, before they are exported into any external image enhancement software for rendering. I hereby stand firmly that it is possible to draw any graphic regardless of difficulty, entirely on MS Paint.

3. I have absolutely no knowledge of Vector Graphics, I'm not fond of doing my work in Vector, as I find it hard to use, not accurate and a little cartoonish. However I once tried drawing on Vector, but it failed, as I tried to add many details to it, and my 3GB RAM, 256mb Graphics Card, 4.0 GHz Intel Core Duo PC couldn't handle that magnitude. So I had to abandon all hope of this.

In fact, many skyscraper websites (e.g. SkyscraperPage.com and SkyscraperCity.com) are requesting me to write a full length tutorial for them on how to use MS Paint without squandering hundreds of dollars on professional software.

I don't mind if my site is not on the external links, but I just write to make sure you and I understand about this and things are clear, honest and what it is.

solar eclipse edit[edit]

Hello, Kieff, the picture you deleted is a composition of 2 original images that were taking in the same place at the same date but 2 hours apart. They both were processed in PS separately and then combined together by pasting one to another. So what is "fake" about it,Kieff? Or maybe because anonymus IP bandit vandalised my Summary page you came up with your edit Kieff? My goal was not to make the picture look real, my goal was to show an atmosphere of the event. If you look at the amphitheater, Kieff, you will see TV crews there. What do you think they were doing, Kieff? They were filming solar eclipse. So you deleted the picture and it is fine with me. I saw the eclipse and the amphitheater, most Wikipedia readers did not. I wanted to share my picture with Wikipedia readers, but I guess I cannot because you, Kieff, call my picture a "fake". Sure everybody could have an opinion. Some people could hate the picture, while others could like it, but you, Kieff, and others like you made an opinion for everybody yourself by deleting the picture. By the way I did few pictures like that with the different settings. Here's one picture that was selected by Anacortes Telescope & Wild Bird as a picture of the day. For this one I used my picture of a diamond ring to make a frame. So at least somebody likes my pictures that look like "fake". Regardless of your wish to dismiss any discussion on the topic, I came here to do it anyway. My point in removing the picture from the article (I didn't delete it or anything) was that it didn't depict the actual effects of the total eclipse as someone would see it, but was in fact a photomanipulation of a real eclipse with another non-eclipse photo, and this was a bit disappointing. If you do have two pictures of that day, as you claim, taken a few hours apart, then you should just upload both of them in their original form and place them side by side withing the article , so we could all see the eclipse on all it's glory and compare it to moments before it happened, without any photomanipulation. THAT would have been a great addition to the article and the project. It was not my intention to discredit your efforts in any way, and I should have been more encouraging to upload the originals back then, but I made the edit at work and forgot about it once I got home. I apologize for that. I understand your disappointment, but there's no reason to take it so aggressively!

I humbly request you reconsider uploading the two original images you used, but upload them separately and let users compare them themselves. I'd be glad to have those in the article. It's just that photomanipulations are deceiving and must be used with great care to maintain encyclopedic value. Yes it is. 2 original pictures were processed in PS (manipulation) and combined togetger (one more manipulation), or better yet I took eclipse picture from APOD and amphitiater picture from a travel site and combined both together and said I took it, or maybe (I forgot) I painted both of them(I wish I could paint), and I've never been to Turkey and I've never seen a solar eclipse. I'm not going to upload any more pictures to Wikipedia (not interested). I'm sorry I uploaded so many pictures already. I requested that eclipse picture to be deleted. With time I would request all of my other pictures to be deleted too.

What makes you think you should, or would, understand it? It's a personal thing, nothing else. No worries. I'm well aware of Wikipedia's policies, and I'm also well aware that nothing said in the Reference Desk should be taken as certain, or as a replacement for professional help. I wouldn't take advice from anyone there, like I said. I was just looking for possible explanations of what could cause that specific effect, since as far as I know (and also the medic I visited), none of the common eye problems offer that kind of optical effect. We're all puzzled, so I'm gonna have to look more into it with other professionals this week. I'm just hoping it's not a neurological thing, but I do want to find out what's causing this, so any theory would be worth checking out, if done appropriately. Graphics Lab Announcement[edit]

Attention All Wikigraphists![edit]

As you may or may have not noticed, the Graphics Lab pages have gone under a massive cleanup by User:DTR, User:Rugby471 and various others (sorry if I missed you out). Some of the things that have happened are.

All pages in the Graphics Lab have had, where sensible, templates, substituting elements. For example, the main Lab page was a large chunk of around 100 lines of pure code. It was not very easy to edit the main page, so the various sections of it (eg links, welcome) have been separated. Therefore the main page is now only around 20 lines of user friendly text. If you wish to edit the main page, you must look on the main page for the correct template to edit. (Fore example if I wanted to edit the links section, I would go to Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/links and edit the text there). This has been done to all of the pages, in an attempt to make them more user-friendly.

As you were notified of early, the Wikigraphist Abilities page has been set up and has been beginning to get populated. If you haven't already setup your own entry, you are advised to go and do so now.

Due to a comment from User:DTR. A template for Graphics Lab announcements has been created. It is at Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/announcement. If you ever need to issue a message to Wikigraphists, please use this template in the form

{{Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/announcement|message ~~~~}}

Where message is the announcement you wish to issue.

On the Images to Improve Page, an issue was noticed where that when requests were completed, people were adding {{Did}} but forgetting to add <!--werdnabot-archive--&gt so that the request would be archived. Therefore a template has been created (yes another one!) to help with this. When a user creates a new request instead of putting the usual code, they shall put

{{Request Title|title=Lorem Ipsum|done=false}}. Now when a request is completed, all you will have to do is change done to true

done=true

and the template will add the {{did}} template and also  to the title, so it will get archived.

As always, if you experience any issues with the new changes, or are just a bit confused, please don't hesitate to contact me or DTR on our talk pages.

Crystal ball, what? Your image of a tri-axial (motor-)cycle front wheel precessing about a "lean" (bank) axis can only relate to my unique extant prototype. This is illustrated at the publications section of www.surreycommunity/info/brp Conventional "rake & trail" bicycle front ends do not give such elegant precession due to their compound steering geometry. Look Over The Following Template[edit]

I started the Chef Database template using the same model as the IMDB template. You can see it here: Template:Chefdb name and from there you can go to the documentation. Now the problem is categorizing it. Every time I added the category People and person external link templates, it shows up as something different in the category list. I was wondering if you can fix it? I just can seem to find where to fix it. Another thing is that when you add the template, you have to add "chefdb name" and not just "chefdb." Torus - mug morph[edit]

I noticed that the mug has 'edges', (the lip and where the handle meets the cylindrical body are sharp). I seem to remember that some topologists don't like creases and sharp edges that cannot continuously be derived... If you could just round those off a little (and the bottom as it is pushed down...) it would make even those nitpickers happier. Have you considered a semi transparent skin so that the interior of the mug would be partially visible?

Question about the use of templates[edit]

There is an issue with how to properly use the name parameter on with templates to links with personal profiles such as {{eliteprospects}}, {{hockeydb}}, {{IMDb name}}, ect.

While it is understood that the name parameter is to be used for removing the disambiguator (such as at Mike Sullivan (ice hockey) some editors are also using this parameter to show the person's name in a non-verified form using non-English and modified letters [[such as at Đặng Hữu Phúc and Miroslav Blaťák – even when the external link uses the English form of name (without modified letters).

Question: Is the purpose of the name parameter to show the name of the person as listed at the linked site, or is it to write in whatever the editor thinks he name should be shown as (i.e. damn the sources)? Dolovis (talk) 14:37, 13 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Different templates use them differently. The hockey templates use them to remove the disambiguator and to reflect what Wikipedia lists their article as for consistency. The Eliteprospects one you mention even states this clearly on its page. -DJSasso (talk) 16:40, 13 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Extension to Template:IMDb name[edit]

Hi,
(The template refers me here.)
It is not uncommon in a movie cast list to see newish performers linked directly to the IMDb since they have no WP articles of their own.
This is done ad hoc.
What if there were a variant of "IMDb name" that suppressed the "at the IMDb" string?
So a cast list might include:

John Doe at IMDb as Joseph Stalin

and the "at ..." string would not then appear because the special flag had been enabled.
