Amramp[edit]

Hi Matt, I received a message from you that my submission describing our company "Amramp" was considered advertising. I had this article written to objectively describe our unique product, the benefits it provides, and history behind the company. I completely understand and respect the fact that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. I do not wish to advertise our company. I only wish for our unique product to be described to those who may be interested in learning about Amramp or our special type of ramp. For instance, Coca Cola has a description on Wikipedia. Do you have any suggestions about how I could enhance this article to meet Wikipedia standards?

Amramp

Amramp, previously known as American Ramp Systems, manufactures and installs modular steel wheelchair ramps that can be rented or purchased by individuals, businesses, and organizations. The company provides free estimates and holds patents on its designs. Amramp is represented by 40 locally owned franchisees across the United States. Hi Mark. Thanks for your message. There are a couple issues with the page:
  1. It wasn't written objectively, and appeared to be an advert. This goes against our "What Wikipedia is not" policy. Examples of this are the testimonial and specification sections. Specification of products should be irrelevant to Wikipedia articles as the purpose shouldn't be to sell or describe an item in such manner.
  2. It didn't establish why the company is notable. Have they been featured in multiple independent and reliable sources (such as trade publications or newspapers, or equivalent websites)? Stating that the company does a lot for the community is (unfortunately) not sufficient – we must have a third party deem it relevant enough to cover.
I hope you understand the issues here. Ultimately, our conflicts of interest guidelines states that "you should avoid or exercise great caution when editing articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with". Ernest Cook Trust[edit]

Ultimately, it's best if you don't add the information. As a PR company, you have a (presumably financial) interest in this business and there is a conflict of interest. Even if your intentions are good faith – which I wouldn't doubt for a second – we still may experience unavoidable WP:NPOV violations. Our conflict of interest guidelines states that "Where advancing outside interests are more important to an editor than advancing the aims of Wikipedia, that editor stands in a conflict of interest [COI]" and that "COI editing is strongly discouraged". I would make the assumption that you wouldn't be writing the article if you didn't have a commercial link to the Ernest Cook Trust, which implies that outside interests are greater than improving Wikipedia.
As for adding the information, we must assume that content from external websites (such as http://www.ernestcooktrust.org.uk/) cannot be used unless explicitly stated. Our donating copyrighted materials goes through how we can gain permission to use the content. In a nutshell, it states that you can only donate the material if "you are the copyright holder and the content is compatible with policies and guidelines". I hope this all makes sense and you understand our policies/guidelines – just let me know if theres anything else you'd like me to go through or help you with. As I said on my talk page, I don't take quite the same stern view of COI and paid editing that some others do; I prefer to judge the result. I didn't realise I'd "chosen to ignore" any other points of view. I appreciate we may have different views on COI editing, but what's more to say? My posts to the user above outline our community guidelines, and how COIs can affect NPOV. As it is, the user is a blatant violation of WP:USERNAME. Their positive editing led to me giving them the benefit of the doubt (as Julian Colton had issued a soft warning/notice on their web page). You obviously take a similar view (as shown above).
You needn't make such comments about administrators, however. (I appreciate you've had bad experiences at RfA but that's no reason to make such statements). Gunnar Peterson Page[edit]

Hello!

I was hoping you could point me in the right direction. I recently created my first wiki page. I see that you moved it to a page that only features his name. Since it was my first article, I was mimicking a style I'd seen other pages for where they had clarification in parenthesis - this edit doesn't cause me any concern. (happy to learn the wiki "best practice")

My problem/question is that after you moved the page - someone else came along and deleted it. Is this because of the move? Is this a vandal? Should I reload the page to just "Gunnar Peterson" as you originally moved it?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

a) prove you are the owner, and
b) licence it for use

Hi! The reason I deleted it was that the article did not show why the band were notable. Our notability guidelines for bands states what qualifies a band for inclusion. Other ways of establishing notability are showing that the band have had third-party coverage – have they had reviews, interviews or other coverage in reliable sources? The existence of the band isn't contested – our policy is that just because a subject exists, that isn't sufficient to warrant an article. Help with renaming account[edit]

Hi Matt, Thanks for pointing out my account name was a 'no go'. I hadn't realised that it would be a problem and was an honest mistake. Although I work for the publisher of these 'further reading' books, they are genuine and my posts are meant to be aiding readers. Only problem is, I can't change my username as I'm directed because my account is blocked and I'm unabel to edit the page where you request a username change, in order to add my request! Can you suggest how I might go about this? I want to change it to RhoslynS. I've just set this account up in order that I can write you this message, but I don't want to have to go and retype additions I made with the ACCPublishingGroup username. No probs. Although your edits aren't prohibited, you should make yourself aware of our conflict of interest guidelines. As long as your interest in improving Wikipedia is genuinely greater than your work for this publisher, there should not be an issue. In order to move your account (including your edits) to a new username, you should follow the steps at Wikipedia:Changing username. This process is different to signing up for a new account – make sure that you do not register your new username manually. Doing this may stop your edits being able to be re-attributed to your new account.
Basically, think up a new username that complies with our username policy. Then check it doesn't exist by searching for it at Special:ListUsers. If there's no registered account under the name you want, then you're good to follow the process at WP:CHU#Instructions.

It's generally best to add an article to Wikipedia when it meets the inclusion criteria. You can edit your article as a subpage to reduce the risk of deletion. As it stands, the article qualified for speedy deletion under WP:CSD#A7, and was deleted. matt (talk) 21:30, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I deleted the article as it did not assert any notability (as outlined in our notability guidelines for organisations). Has the gang had multiple instances of reliable coverage? That is our basic level of notability. Your are able to edit your article right now at Wikipedia:Article Incubator/Procedure Proficiency Software. It's in the "incubator", meaning that it's not quite ready for the encyclopaedia (but someone has decided it has potential). I deleted the Procedure Proficiency Software article in the main namespace (i.e. where articles go) because it had no content.
If you wish to work on the page to get it to Wikipedia standards, you will need to provide multiple third-party reliable references to verify the information in the article. Currently, the link provided on the page does not mention "procedure proficiency software", and so does not count as an applicable source. You must take care to ensure that the article does not become an advert for 3D-JITT – it should be about procedure proficiency software in general. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! No, it was a hoax. Tim Meyer didn't kill Hitler, free the slaves or find America – all things which were claimed by the article. Any articles we have on legends introduce them as such, whereas if Tim Meyer really was a legend, it was introduced as being fact. Hi Alexa. I deleted the article under the A7 speedy deletion criteria. This was because the article didn't state why the group was notable. Unfortunately, purely being the first at something doesn't mean an article is notable – has the party been covered by reliable independent sources? The sources you provided aren't suitable, as one was the official page and another was a blog post (I couldn't verify whether it was reliably posted by a third-party). If you take a glance at our general notability guidelines, you'll see what it takes (at the absolute minimum) to establish and assert notability and, ideally, keep an article on Wikipedia.

Hi! The reason I deleted it was that it did not indicate how the person was significant. Unfortunately, Wikipedia is not a crystal ball and so can't have information in that isn't verifiable through reliable sources. There are two ways this article can progress:
  1. You can relax and wait until this person is notable. Just because they may not warrant an article now, doesn't mean they wont in the future
  2. You can provide reliable, third-party sources to indicate that they have been deemed notable by someone else. This could be a review or interview, but a blog or official website isn't enough.
I hope this explains why the article was deleted. You're welcome to work on it further, but I'd suggest reading our general notability guidelines to see what can be done (at minimum) to show that the person is notable. If you could provide a link to a copy of the interview I can help you to see whether it is suitable or not. As group or fan numbers can't be verified (who's to say, for instance, that lots of the members of a group aren't duplicates or fake?), that can't be used to quantify notability (see WP:BIG). From my point of view, it looks like this person does not yet pass our notability guidelines. As I said previously, this is not permanent – especially if the interview shows so. Sanguine (band)[edit]

Hi Matt

I've taken anything out that is not a fact statment and I have citated all the sources. Apart from this section (which was there originally on Wiki for a number of years!) which has been kept the same as the original:

"First conceived in 2002 by lead singer/songwriter Tarin Kerrey, Sanguine are a four piece, female fronted alternative metal band originating from Exeter in the UK.[1]

Sanguine’s music was never designed with one genre in mind, describing themselves as alt-metal purely because no other term seemed to fit, and their mix of sweet-innocent vocals and music coupled with stab-victim screams and grinding riffs certainly leads you to expect the unexpected. However, like any other music it's better heard than described, so download the free tracks and make up your own mind. If that’s not enough for you then Sanguine are also well know for their energetic shows, always committing every ounce of energy regardless of the venue.

This was reflected at their very first gig where the media said: “A truly mind-blowing…alternative rock/metal outfit who stormed through a sensational set…Sanguine are going to be huge there is no doubt about that, so check them out before they take off to the big time.” ([2])"

Hi Max. The main issue with the article now is that it looks like a CV. Ideally, it should be prose – using an example from Category:British alternative metal musical groups, see how the history section of the Skindred article details the band chronologically, not just listing when they've been covered in the press.
The next step I'd suggest is, though, to find the exact sources for the quotes in the article – so issue numbers, authors and exacts dates would be ideal – URLs are even better. Remember that the article's purpose isn't to promote the band, so numerous references praising their live shows or album (or whatever) aren't necessary. Likewise, I'm sure someone's written a not-so-good review of something, which would help to balance the neutrality. If you're able to find some online references (MySpace is not a reliable source so shouldn't be used to verify information), I'd be more than happy to help you draft something. Our general notability guidelines state that in order for an article to stand alone, it should have "received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject". After you warned 92.14.250.86 they put the gay actor category back [DIFF], removed recent citation needed tags from Sean Connery [HERE] then moved on to Richard Wilson (Scottish actor) [HERE] which was restoring the only edit by user:Tedarmiger [HERE]. Thanks. I've reverted the Richard Wilson article – I don't think the source given is reliable enough, and does not back up the statement that he is "openly gay". The talk page (as well as the article) were semi-protected to prevent further need to suppress edits; each of those usages of oversight you noticed were in response to the same information, a result of the recent events mentioned on the article. As much as I understand and agree with your concerns, I'd prefer the protection remain up for at least a week more to avoid the information being reposted again, for both BLP and legal reasons. It's possible we could set up an "unprotected talk page" like several admins have on their user talk pages, and either link or transclude it to the main talk page, but that's subject to the same problem, so we may as well just unprotect then. I deleted the article as it didn't explain why it was notable (see WP:WEB). Notability is often shown through using third party sources – such as a news feature from a reliable source. The fact that we don't know the identity of the original author does not affect the deletion. The article shouldn't be remade without complying with the WP:WEB guidelines. Remember that as members or admins of the website, you have a conflict of interest – and a duty to ensure that your edits on the topic are for the benefit of Wikipedia and not your website. Hi – thanks for your message. The reason why the article was deleted was that it was about a band and didn't state why the band was notable. Notability is explained at WP:NOTABILITY – basically, you'll need some nice references in there – perhaps some reviews of the band, or an interview or something. Remember, however, that these must come from independent and reliable sources – MySpace, Facebook, Twitter etc. is not suitable. Newcastle Roller Girls[edit]

Hello, I tried to create this page earlier, with the information below:

The Newcastle Roller Girls are a team of skaters playing the modern day version of Roller Derby. They are based in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in the North East of England.

The team is made up of a Captain, Brie Larceny; Vice Captain, Rita Von Sleaze; and other team members who take on roles within the team of: Jammer, Pivot and Blocker. Newcastle Roller Girls are the largest team in the North East of England, and have been around since 2009, their first bout is in Edinburgh in April 2010, less than one year after forming.

Although they are an all female team, they are coached by Duk, a male skater, and have two male refs, Andrew and Alex.

They have a Facebook site, ad a website is currently being built, and are on the look out for new skaters, female and male.

Is it ok to put this information on without mentioning names?

Hi Karen. It's not really the names that is the issue. Unfortunately, the article didn't meet our notability guidelines. Take a look at our guidelines for articles on groups and sportspeople – these should give you an idea of what the article will need to include to keep it on Wikipedia. I hope this makes sense – generally speaking, an article is considered "notable" if the subject has been covered in third-party and reliable publications.

Karen – I've started off a stub at Newcastle Roller Girls. This should satisfy the basic entry-level of an article (it includes references, and is neutral). Neutrality is one of our core policies, so we can't advertise that the group are "on the look out for new skaters" etc. Feel free to edit the article – it would be good to mention the coach/refs' names, but we would need their full name (not just the nickname). Remember that, however, you have a conflict of interest with this article. This shouldn't be a problem provided you edit the article for the benefit of Wikipedia and not to promote NRG. Let me know if you need any more help – I'll keep a watch on the article to see if I can chip in (excuse my ignorance on the current state of the article – I know nothing about roller derby so feel free to fix anything that is glaringly innacurate!). Hi. The reason I deleted it was that it didn't credibly say why the group was notable. Our page on notability guidelines for organisations explains what it takes to show notability – but basically it boils down to having coverage in reliable, third-party publications. I'm happy to help fix this page and ensure it is accurate. I have edited pages for errors before with factual accurate information only to have those edits removed. You say Wiki only publishes third party information. Then how do I deal for example with the issue that I was there and witnessed the event or incident? Are you saying I have to publish the event elsewhere first?
In any case back to this museum page. Your source, the blog of a history professor is indeed full of errors. He even writes about seeing locomotives in the museum that (a) In one case, 1315 does not exist anywhere, it was scrapped in 1996 (b) while it exists, 2409, is not in the museum and has not been there since December 2004....there are other errors on his page too.
Let me know what you want to do. I'm just stating if I do the work. I don't want to see it undone.

I wanted to send a message to Denise, to answer to her question about the existence of CSV imports.

I just want to say that there is no such function either in MS Money, Quicken, GnuCash, etc.

They all recognize QIF but not CSV and many banks generate statements in CSV only.

No this is not good. I don't have a problem with new articles on settlements but you;ve created them all with false data. Falling rain should have been blacklisted years ago. The population data is grossly inaccurate and the data is at least ten years out of date compiled in 1995 to 1996. Please stop using falling rain data. It is black list neglect that the site was not blacklisted long ago. The site does contain accurate coordinate data, that's about it. But trust me, User:Orderinchaos and User:Darwinek on this. The data is often seriously at fault. For instance a Tibetan town, Chinese government claims 35,000. Falling rain said "800 in a 7km radius". A coastal settlement in western Madagscar. Google earth claims 1 metre. Falling rain claims 360 metres. Honestly it is a dreadul source. I support you creating articles about settlements providing they are veriable, actually a few years back I proposed [{Fritzpollbot]] to start articles on every settlement in the world but was opposed by a lot of people in that they didn't contain reliable sources. I know that Kenyan government data on setltements is probably not widely available but please can you not use fallingrain. The coordinate data is the only accurate thing, given that it was compiled from the geodatabase. Another problem is that it often lists settlements which no longer exist or are tiny hamlets. Are you saying it is sufficient for verifying coordinates, though? Cool. The coordinates are generally accurate but I would use google earth or geo names database for that purpose. Falling rain should be ignored completely. If you could create the articles with accurate coordinates and try to find government sources I'd be the first to support you. Note though if you are mass creating using automation at a high level you'll need authorisation as Xeno said above. What I can do is find some reliable sources for you to create articles about settlements. We definately need an editor like you creating articles about African/Asian/Oceanian settlements but only if they don't contain falling rain references and false data!! First of all though a cleanup job will be need to rmeove the data form falling rain in these articles and all others. You'll often see it used to reference altitude data in Tanzanian articles etc which is known to be wrong. Most editors yourself included are unaware of just how wrong the data generally is. I can arrange for you to start articles on Benin settlements for example using sources like this. Just the data has to be known to be based on accurate sources and not guesses! In fatc you could finish my work on Arrondissements of Benin using the sources given and then lists and start the settlements within them using the above sources. Things like this OK? You'll find that coordinates in geo articles rarely need referencing. It is factual data like altitude and population that require reliable sources. So I think coordinates with no source would be better, providing they are verifiable. If it is easier for you to extract the coordinates from falling rain by all means do so but do not rely on it for anything elase, even naming conventions of places are often trasliterated wrongly. Are you aware of Maplandia world gazetteer? Have a browse by country and region/district. This lists settlements by province and districts which is good for compiling lists of places and its has the coordinates, I think it woul dbe better to compile settelements and coordinates from Maplandia but only if you use reliable sources for population and altitude data. Also you might find World Gazetteer useful for population data for the more obscure countries. See Thailand. Now click parent division say central and it lists loads of towns with data, many of which do not have articles on here. Where possible though solid government sources should really be used but I aware this is impossible for countries like Gabon etc at the moment. I've made some comments on the bot proposal page and proposed to sort the Kenyan geography stub by province. I was wondering if I could create a list of countries/divisions that could be started and possible sources on you user page or a sub page. I have the full data of all the communes and villages in Senegal for instance using official sources not to mention sources for those mentioned above and a site called statoids for starting articles like [[Communes of Angola, Burundi, districts of Anguilla, counties of American Samoa, mukims of Brunei, some of the districts of Ghana, councils of Guyana, villages of Niue etc. If you are interested let me know as I feel there is a lot of work to be doing which can be done using reliable sources and done first time. Westfields Halt railway station[edit]

I've moved the article to Newbury West Fields Halt railway station. This is because the convention for closed stations is to use the name as at closure, as given in reliable sources such as Butt 1995. According to Butt, the name was always Newbury West Fields Halt; this is (almost) backed up by photos of the station, which show the name as "NEWBURY WEST FIELDS". I've also adjusted the five redirects that you created; normally, we wouldn't create that many - there'd be one for each previous name that the station had in its history, and always of the form "xxxx railway station". --Redrose64 (talk) 19:13, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. The original article (Ixbay) was written more like an advert than a neutral encyclopaedia article. The purpose of writing an article should be to provide educational content, not to "share good things". You're more than welcome to re-write the article, but I'd suggest you read through the content guidelines for advertising. You may also want to get familiar with the notability guidelines for organisations, so that you know what you'll need to add (such as references from reliable sources) to pass the notability guidelines. The BBC and Sky are still reporting Moat's death "from sources". This means it's not verifiable (I've not seen either source run the story without the "sources say" caveat). William Page (1861-1934) edited the series and Rev. Dr. Ditchfield was his Berkshire co-editor. I have amended the page accordingly.

I like it, more neutral, that is an improvement! Your other point is a good question, but here is my take on it: Once I tried to add the description of the knife attack to the George Harrison article, but the editors there rightly pointed out the undue weight that would give. We did add more detail to that article, but added the full detail to the Abram article. I don't doubt that it's true. However, it didn't meet our notability guidelines for musical groups. We have to have a threshold to decide what can and what can't be included – and that threshold is whether the subject (i.e. Vocalistix) has been the subject of multiple instances of media covarage (see WP:RS). There's every chance of having an article, if the group can satisfy just one of the notability criteria. One of the easiest ones is media coverage – has the group been the subject of any published works (interview, review, that sort of thing) that have been written by someone unconnected to the group? Unfortunately, being connected to someone famous isn't grounds for a stand-alone article (see WP:NOTINHERITED) but if there's a website that states that the group's instructor is famous then that may be sufficient to include the information in their article – but only briefly and without giving undue weight. Hi. For the article to be included, it'll need to satisfy the notability guidelines. Simply put, the subject (i.e. Bizz Radio) needs to have been covered in third-party publications (such as a review in a newspaper, that sort of thing). That way we can use these publications as sources, while verifying the station's notability. In terms of sources, reprints of press-releases (or other advertorials) aren't sufficient. Apparently something was published in the Basingstoke Gazette last month – which would be fine as a source – but the web link is dead so I can't see whether it is a sufficient. Deletion of artist page Lost Dawn[edit]

I'm unsure why you deleted the page that I created for a band who interest me greatly and who have started to receive recognition within the musical world. A lot of time and effort went into creating an accurate account of the band, and I dont feel that any of the wiki terms have been violated. If you aren't prepared to take back your decision, then perhaps you would be so kind as to send me teh content of the page, so that when the band have aquired further recognition, I am able to re-submit with more detail and additional content

Hi Velvet92. The reason why the page was deleted was that it didn't seem to say why the band are notable. There's a list at WP:BAND that outlines (generally) what a band should have done to qualify for an article. If the band do satisfy any of the items on the list, then you can add good-quality references (such as an interview, live review, that sort of thing) to verify the information. I've userfied the article – you can find it at User:Velvet92/Lost Dawn. This means you're able to work on it before making it live – there won't be the same risk of deletion. Hi John. I don't think that deleting the THE 60TH MISS UNIVERSE 2011 page would do much – it seems to be more affected by Google's cache of the article (when it wasn't a redirect). I'd imagine that next time Google crawls that page, it will be "dropped" from their listings in favour of the (correct) Miss Universe 2011 article. An Invite to join the Highways WikiProject[edit]

Hi, MIDI, you are graciously extended an invitation to join the International Highways WikiProject and its new regional taskforces! The Highways WikiProject is an evolving and expanding WikiProject. We are a group of editors who are dedicated to creating, revising, and expanding articles, lists, categories, and Wikiprojects, or anything related to International Roads. This includes supporting existing regional road WikiProjects and fostering the development of new international highway WikiProjects. We have recently created five regional task forces focused on Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania and Latin America.

UK Community Notice - IRC meeting[edit]

Dear Wikipedian,


This is the first of what will hopefully be a regular notice to help bring together the UK community so that you can be involved in some amazing things. To kick things off, there will be a UK community IRC meeting at 1800 UTC, December 7, 2010 to discuss the future growth and developement of Wikimedia UK. Without huge community support and involvement, the chapter cannot be successful and to get the most out of it, get involved.

Hi Mattgirling, I saw that you were the author of the article and that you added the coordinates to Kacheliba. I try to localize this village and according to a map from 1973 Kacheliba is rather at 1°28'N, not 1°48'N. Are there two Kachelibas or is this a typo? The original info was taken from a database with some iffy figures, so I suspect that there is just one settlement called Kacheliba in the area. I've updated the article (with reference); the reference should be general enough to reuse for any data taken from the map. Thanks for the heads up! I found your name at this category. For the Good Garage Scheme article, would you please take a photo of The Good Garage Scheme, 4 Parbrook Close, Coventry, CV4 9XY and add it to the article. Also, if you could take a snappy or two of two or garges near you listed at GGS that includes the Good Garage Scheme mark/sign/(?) posted in those garages and place those photos in the article, that would be swell. I'm afraid I'm not currently in the West Midlands so can't do requests at the moment (when I can take photos they're around the Birmingham area rather than towards Coventry). Have you tried looking on Geograph for any locations? I deleted the page as there was no assertion that the subject was notable. Articles on people should clearly state why they are notable, and back this up with reliable sources. The basic requirement to avoid speedy deletion is the assertion of notability (i.e. saying why the subject is notable) rather than proving notability (i.e. including sources).
