List of national parks of Australia

Hi Magnus Manske. I assume that you are the person responsible for User:ListeriaBot. For your information, I spent about an hour and half this morning upgrading the South Australia section of the article to add missing national parks and adding additional information. I just logged on again to check the coordinates for the South Australian NP as I am concerned that out-of-date sources may have been used to discover that all of my edits have been reverted without any explanation. Can you please reply here to explain what is going with this article? Regards Cowdy001 (talk) 23:14, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

Problem with CommonsHelper moving from he Wikipedia

Autolist/WiDaR: Updating a property

Hello Magnus,

I didn't find any desciption of the statement syntax besides the footer of the WiDaR box at Autolist2, so I'm asking here if it is possible to update a property with Autolist2/WiDAR? At the moment I do two lines (P31:4830453 / -P31:783794), but having one statement (like P31:783794 => 4830453) would double the speed given the current rate limiting.

Thanks,

Hi. I tried to transfer en:File:The expulsion of King Otto in 1862.jpg to Commons. (Login-s, Oath uploader: all OK). Response on [1] is as follows:

  • Querying CommonSense ...done.
  • Querying image data ...done.
  • Retrieving image description ...done.
  • ERROR: Warning
  • duplicate-archive : Oton.jpg

And nothing is done. (File NOT trasferred, no new contribution on Commons). Can You please verify and fix it. Thanks. Akela (talk) 22:12, 9 December 2015 (UTC)

Unused files

Hello Magnus, I've found your tools Unused files for Categories and Used files for Users, but I am interested by a tool wich search "unused files sorted by user". I would like to know the files on Commons I didn't used yet ... or than a particular user did not too. I didn't found this tool, does it exist ? or is it possible to modify the results from one of the two above ? Thank you a lot, Roumpf (talk) 14:03, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

Listeriabot

Hi,

Could you please modify your bot's parameters ? I noticed on the French wikipedia that it generates direct links to wikidata, which are completely useless since we have redirects on wikipedia for many of these notions. Thanks a lot. Jean-Jacques Georges (talk) 06:59, 21 January 2016 (UTC)

Hello there!
I'm sorry for typing this message here-I saw your request in this page's title, so I entered to BitBucket, but then I saw you haven't opened a page for it yet

This tool has a great potential but most of the results I get (when searching for 1000 articles that don't exist in hewiki) are categories or templates. Is it possible to allow a user to exclude that kind of results? Hummingbird (talk) 03:38, 22 January 2016 (UTC)

"Delinking" deleted files is undesireable

I don't see the point of removing the references to a deleted file. I think it would be better to simply leave the dead link in the article, thus making it obvious that some other image might be substituted. By "delinking" you're also removing the caption, which may contain valuable information for the reader, even if there's temporarily no image. EEng 03:57, 5 February 2016 (UTC)

I suggest taking that discussion here. --Magnus Manske (talk) 16:03, 11 February 2016 (UTC)

Frustrations on da-wiki: ListeriaBot not using bot-flag on edits

It is using bot flag, it just hasn't been granted bot status on da-wiki. I don't speak Danish, so I wouldn't really know where to go, much less request it. If someone else would request it for me and translate all the discussions, great! --Magnus Manske (talk) 10:14, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

I had a similar problem. My input:

Q1000178 P1082 974 P585 +2010-01-01T00:00:00Z/9 S143 Q465

This encoded the triple just fine, but wouldn't encode the P585 or the S143. It eventually came to light that I was misreading the documentation for Quantity values [+|-]d* to assume the sign on the values was optional. It is not. Fixing that solved the problem. CommonsDelinker removing from galleries

No great harm done here as the leftover text doesn't render, but in case it's not intended behaviour, I'm just flagging the fact that when cleaning out a deleted image from a gallery here, your bot removed only the filename and left the "|thumb|description" remainder of the line in place. --McGeddon (talk) 08:39, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

Hi Magnus Manske! I only want inform you that your bot (ListeriaBot) is infringing the Bot's Policy of Wikipedia in Spanish. Your bot is editing without an autorization. What if I want to try the creation of a new item? Is there a way to try this safely? Nvitucci (talk) 10:08, 12 July 2016 (UTC)
Not really, but if it's just one test item, I say go ahead, then mark it for deletion. But it's just the same as editing, except you write CREATE into a line on top, and use LAST instead of Qxxx for the first "column". --Magnus Manske (talk) 12:09, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments experimental tool

Hi Magnus. I love the Wiki Loves Monuments experimental tool and would also love to build on this work. Specifically I am keen to:

  • offer it with a Welsh language interface
  • add new campaigns as searchable content

Is it better that I:

  1. fork it then run a separate instance on Wikimedia Tool Labs, or,
  2. is there some way of collaborating on the existing tool please?

Thanks for reading. --Oergell (talk) 15:18, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

Dear Magnus, I have decided to try forking your code for my Welsh language adaptation. I know you are busy so don't worry about replying - but do feel free to let me know if you know a better way of doing this. Thanks again for your hard work on a cool project. --Oergell (talk) 15:26, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
@Oergell: I would recommend not forking this - having multiple versions virtually guarantees it's for the bin. To add new campaigns, all you need to do is edit Wikidata. I get the campaigns like this. Essentially, it shows all properties that are instance of:Q18618628. I am working on something for translation at the moment, I'm sure you'll like it :-) --Magnus Manske (talk) 18:31, 19 July 2016 (UTC)

Copying image to commons

Hello Magnus Manske I have been attempting to copy an image (File:Garid magnai.jpg) to Wikipedia commons. I have tried multiple times using commons helper and OAuth uploader and despite the file even being tagged that it should be transferred to commons it just is not working. Is there any help or advise you can give me? Thanks Inter&anthro (talk) 19:24, 23 August 2016 (UTC)

First, next time, please report any error messages or details what exactly failed, instead of "it's not working". That said, it appears that a file with that filename was deleted on Commons earlier. Chosing a different file name under "New name" in the form should fix that. --Magnus Manske (talk) 19:53, 23 August 2016 (UTC)
Hi Magnus Manske, thank you very much for your response. I tried uploading File:Garid magnai.jpg to commons, but commons helper said that the file name (Bayasgalangiin Garidmagnai in 2008) was not valid. Inter&anthro (talk) 20:22, 23 August 2016 (UTC)
Odd, I tried, and it doesn't say that for me. It says "bad file name" if I omit the ".jpg", which is as it should be. But, using a correct name, it still fails, because Commons remembers that this exact file was once uploaded and deleted there. Nothing I can do about that. --Magnus Manske (talk) 12:20, 24 August 2016 (UTC)
Okay thank you very much for your help on this issue though. Inter&anthro (talk) 14:41, 24 August 2016 (UTC)

QuickStatements: "wikidata" as first column?

Not sure what you are doing, but it probably doesn't work that way. The first column should be the "Q number" of the Wikidata item, and the "wiki" field on top should be blank. --Magnus Manske (talk) 17:22, 29 August 2016 (UTC)

an help for Ursula Karven

Good morning from Calabria, I'm writing to say hello and know how you are. In addition to this because for a while 'time I met him in a virtual Mrs. Ursula Karven, an extraordinary woman, actress, model and writer and great soul, I was wondering if you would do me a great kindness, to widen it in English since the article in question is reduced this lily. As for me, I will reward you amply, with items of your interest in Italian, Sicilian and Neapolitan..e a little also in Milanese and Piadmontese dialect, I would be very happy if you help me, it takes very little of your time. Well I said that I thank you in advance with all your heart and all your soul for what you will do for me. a warm greeting from Campora San Giovanni--Luigi Salvatore Vadacchino (talk) 15:33, 31 August 2016 (UTC)

Pausing Quick Statements

It would be great to have a button to pause the current task with Quick Statements. --abián 21:03, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

That would be great indeed. I usually run a single request before, but even then I check items as they get modified, and even though I have made no mistake so far, I can imagine that one day I realize my requests are doing something bad, and would love to have a way to stop the damage when that happens :-) Cheers! Human name pages

Hi Magnus. I can't remember if it has been blogged about or discussed somewhere, but is it possible to use Wikidata to update or create human name disambiguation pages? Edits like this are done because people rarely update such pages. For those surname pages, it is less useful to have a list, but where articles have the same name (e.g. John Smith) it can be useful to have Wikidata-generated lists suggesting what changes or additions could be made. Would that be feasible, or has it already been done? Also, those with very long memories might remember the MfDs and DRVs over List of people by name. See the deletion review and the final MfD discussion at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/List of people by name. Back then (in 2007!) I said "I guess what I am asking for is a way to query Wikipedia and get back the result: "List of people with names beginning with B", or whatever letter you want to chose. Or even "Ba", or "Ch" or "Fra". Essentially, I was asking for an index of Wikipedia's biographical articles. Is this now possible in some way using Wikidata? Has it always been possible, but just 'difficult' to do? Carcharoth (talk) 16:37, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

Hi Carcharoth, it is certainly possible, for items where the "family name" property has been set. Example for "Salter". Likewise, one could do people beginning with a certain character or string, like Rock bands starting with M. There is also a way to automatically generate and update such lists (see {{Wikidata list}}), but using it in the article namespace is somewhat controversial, for now. --Magnus Manske (talk) 17:19, 4 September 2016 (UTC)
Thanks! Added to that would be a tool to compare with the existing page (Salter (surname)) and to suggest changes. A bonus would be to generate the 'description' bit automatically. I've seen this done elsewhere: "NAME(S) SURNAME (BBBB-DDDD), Nationality Profession". Trivial, I'm sure. Might impress quite a few people as well it it works (more so than edit wars between bots). Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Magnus Manske. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:47, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Quick Statements Tool: Adding publication date of sources

Hi Magnus, I've run into a problem using the Quick Statements Tool today. What I would like to do is adding a "publication date" qualifier to a reference. If you look at the example item, P17 = "Switzerland" and P131 = "Basel-Land" have a publication date qualifier for their reference. I've added them by hand. So far, I haven't been able to find a way to add such a qualifier using the Quick Statements Tool. I have tried three different approaches:

First, by adding the qualifier putting P577 after the reference statement. This results in adding the qualifier to the main statement (as on the example item for P1435 - heritage status), but that's not what I want.

Q2179606	P131	Q66515	S248	Q26933296	P577	+2016-06-19T00:00:00Z/11

Second, by adding the qualifier putting S577 after the reference statement. The "publication date" statement seems to get ignored.

Q2179606	P131	Q66515	S248	Q26933296	S577	+2016-06-19T00:00:00Z/11

Third, by writing two lines. Here again, the "publication date" statement simply seems to get ignored. This is even the case when I invert the order of the statements.

Q2179606	P131	Q66515	S248	Q26933296
Q2179606	P131	Q66515	S577	+2016-06-19T00:00:00Z/11

Is there a way to achieve what I want to do in the Quick Statements Tool? Or is this case not supported (yet)? Do you have any suggestions how to proceed? --Beat Estermann (talk) 16:12, 27 September 2016 (UTC)

Quick Statements help

Hi. I want to input a mass P2067 as Gross Register Tons using Quick Statements but don't see how to format it - on Wikidata the option to add a unit type is a pop up box, and no qualifier is added to specify unit type. Do you know how i would do that? Thanks! Jason.nlw (talk) 10:44, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

Help with adding data.

Hello, I do not understand the documentation/instructions. I tested this code:

Q1719 P1082 96,061 P585 1 August 2015 P459 Q39825 P248 Q24170418

entry (tabbed) Q1719 P1082 96,061 P585 1 August 2015 P459 Q39825 P248 Q24170418
equivalent Balanga Population 96,061 point in time 1 August 2015 determination method census stated in Philippines 2015 Census

but it gave an erroneous entry which I had reverted. I would have wanted to:

  • add the statement population (P1082) of 96,061
  • add the qualifier point in time (P585) of 1 August 2015
  • add the qualifier determination method (P459) of census (Q39825)
  • add the reference property stated in (P248) of Philippines 2015 Census (Q24170418).

Could you please advise what the correct code/format is? Thanks. Sanglahi86 (talk) 02:58, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

Hi, make sure that you put strings in quotation marks (Q1719 P1082 "96,061"), and use the standard date/time format for the dates (see example above). On second thought, you should probably enter the population number as quantity, i.e. Q1719 P1082 +96061 --Beat Estermann (talk) 18:48, 28 September 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice. I see the missing quotation marks, date & time format, as well as the S for references caused the error/s. Sanglahi86 (talk) 03:12, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
Hello. By default, the rank of a statement added using QuickStatements is normal. Is it possible to use QuickStatements to set the rank as preferred or deprecated? If yes, could you kindly advice on what to do? Thanks. Sanglahi86 (talk) 16:40, 30 September 2016 (UTC)

Problem in adding decimal numbers

Both

Q131954 P2046 +300.10

and

Q131954 P2046 "300.10"

either adds only the whole number (300) and ignores the decimals or don't work at all. Please advise on what the correct code should be. Thanks. Sanglahi86 (talk) 17:21, 2 October 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Magnus Manske.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Hello, Magnus Manske. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Mdann52 (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

WQD and Sparql

Hi Magnus,

I run a few bots to improve the contents of Wikidata and I encounter the following problems:

1) My bots relies on WDQ but it seems that this too has been broken for a few days: http://wdq.wmflabs.org/api returns "504 Gateway Time-out" so I cannot run any query and my bot is now useless. Can you please do something about it? Also, this may be related to the HTTP server so is there a way to use WDQ from a tool located on wmflabs without using HTTP?

2) I understand that WDQ is obsolete and may close soon. I have tried to convert one of my queries to Sparql but I can't get it work. My query is:

# All religious buildings in France (country = France OR located in a French 'commune')
# I need both conditions so I can add P31=France where P31 is mission and find the commune where P131 is missing
claim[31:(TREE[1370598][][279])] AND tree[142][150][17,131]

Converting it using wdq2sparql gives:

SELECT ?item WHERE {
 ?item wdt:P31 ?sub0 .
 ?sub0 (wdt:P279)* wd:Q1370598 .
 ?tree0 (wdt:P150)* ?item .
 ?tree0 (wdt:P17|wdt:P131)* wd:Q142 .
}

It seems to work but I always get a "Query timeout limit reached". I have tried a few variants but I can't manage to have the same results as now using Sparql. So I don't know what to do. My bot has been running very well for two years and I would like it to continue working... Do you have any suggestion?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Best regards. Peter17 (talk) 15:43, 4 December 2016 (UTC)

+ I came with my own question but I saw this topic so just adding here. Is it correct that WDQ is closed and down in favour of SPARQL over WDQS? The service is "Server timeout" for days now (test link: https://wdq.wmflabs.org/api?q=tree[30][150][17,131]%20and%20claim[138:676555]). I thought it was some major server problem being fixed. If it is closed then it is a bummer of course (my project is based on it), but no is no. I just would love to know exactly the situation. --Neolexx (talk) 22:16, 4 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi Magnus,
Any thoughts about this? I have been trying to run my own instance of WDQ on the Tool Labs, but I always get a "MySQL server has gone away"...

Wikidata lists in mainspace up for deletion

(I already notified you above but it occurs to me it might not have been obvious why, so apologies if this is repetitious.)

Two lists maintained by your bot using Wikidata are currently up for deletion: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of female Egyptologists and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of women linguists. The bulk of the discussion is around the fact that they're bot-maintained/draw from Wikidata, so I thought they might be of interest.

Similarly, an editor has been mass-removing the Wikidata list template from other lists in mainspace: [7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. – Joe (talk) 14:16, 27 December 2016 (UTC)

Wikidata transparency with ListeriaBot updates

Hi Magnus. Would you have time to look at this edit? It is my attempt to summarise over here, changes I made on Wikidata to specifically import the changes to a list maintained by ListeriaBot. Is there a way to make such changes transparent and obvious to people trying to follow the editing history of such articles? I know it may not be possible on large lists with lots of changes by lots of people between updates, but for smaller (less active) lists it would be very useful. Carcharoth (talk) 12:28, 27 December 2016 (UTC)

I added references like this and forced an update like this. But I doubt many people will learn how to do this unless the documentation and tools to do this improve markedly. This all has the feel of being too early. The easy-to-use and easy-to-learn-to-use tools need to be there to copy references across and to make working on such lists easy. Or some Wikidata guru needs to demonstrate what can be done here, otherwise the whole process will take a massive reputation hit (more than it already has).
