Operator873's Outstanding Wikipedian Award
For exceptional, conspicuous, and meritorious service to the Wikipedia community, I am proud to present this award to Majora in honor of their accomplishments which reflect great credit upon themselves and their fellow Wikipedians. Operator873CONNECT 22:29, 10 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi, Majora, thanks for your note, apologies for not removing the DNAU tag. As this was my first time at FFU, I was trying to follow the Wikipedia:Files_for_upload/Reviewer_instructions#Accepting_a_request, which doesn't mention any DNAU tag. Any chance of updating that, for the next inexperienced ... err... experienced editor?

I also see "if they're the copyright holder ask them to email you a declaration of consent form (which you can then forward onto OTRS and then upload their file)." I've tried forwarding image copyright holders' emailed license releases to OTRS before, and while it used to work years ago, more recently I've been getting asked to have the copyright holders email OTRS directly, on the theory that then a forwarded email is less evidence, since it can be too easily just typed in (forged), while a direct email takes noticeably more effort to forge. So maybe that could be updated too? As I'm new here, I'm reluctant to do it myself, on the basis of one whole FfU submission. --GRuban (talk) 11:21, 11 June 2018 (UTC)

@GRuban: Ah. Yeah, those instructions need some updating. I will give them a once over and make the necessary changes. Thanks for bringing them up! --Majora (talk) 22:31, 11 June 2018 (UTC)

Your draft article, Draft:FTA paper

Hello, Majora. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "FTA paper".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. » Shadowowl | talk 11:54, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

You know, Shadowowl, common courtesy would have been to ask if a long term editor was still working on something before tagging it for deletion. To be honest, I completely forgot about it. I'll make sure to keep my drafts in my user space from now on to avoid cluttering up the "precious" draft space. --Majora (talk) 20:21, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

File:0010x0010 skirt.jpg

Hello Majora , this particular file has the source included which is the website of the person's record label. It is a new Flickr account, because we thought this was the easiest and quickest way to get our promo pictures acceptd here. If there's anything wrong with our method, please advice so that the photos won't be removed.

Many thanks ! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Violina16 (talkcontribs) 07:41, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

There is zero evidence that you are the copyright holder of those images. They originally come from a source that has no licensing information, which defaults to All Rights Reserved, and then a brand new flickr account uploads them and "claims" they are Creative Commons. That is probably the worst way of going about this. At this point we would need a permission form (which can be found here: c:COM:ET) sent into out copyright response team from an email address that is associated with the content. If you have questions about this feel free to ask me but, unfortunately, the current image cannot be trusted due to the circumstances it was uploaded under. --Majora (talk) 21:01, 12 June 2018 (UTC)
The Flickr account is operated by and linked to the record label that is hosting the original files as promo/press photos. This record label is mentioned as one of his record labels on his page. Is that not evidence enough still ? If not, should the email address be from this record label or by a representative from his official website email?
Many Thanks again ! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Violina16 (talkcontribs) 08:14, 13 June 2018 (UTC)
I see no evidence whatsoever that that Flickr account is run and maintained by the copyright holder of those images. Naming an account the same as a company means nothing. I could open a Flickr account that is called "GoogleOfficial" and nothing would stop me from doing so. Doesn't mean I now own all of Google's copyrights. So no, that is still not enough evidence. So we would either need an email from an official email account that is verifiable to this company or there would have to be a concrete link from the official website to this Flickr account. --Majora (talk) 21:00, 14 June 2018 (UTC)

Link to the Flickr account from the official website http://generationacid.com added. Hope this will be sufficient now. Thanks again for the help :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Violina16 (talkcontribs) 08:14, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi Majora. Not sure how to tag this. Someone added a nld tag, but the uploader just removed it. I re-added that tag, but it will probably be removed again. I guess FFD is an option, but that seems like a waste of time. FWIW, this seems to be the same thing discussed at WP:MCQ#My non free Copyright to my artical Mushroom a collectors Item pdf file by Colm link Lynch. Assuming good-faith in that this new editor probably just didn't quite understand your reply to them at MCQ and deided to push ahead anyway. -- Marchjuly (talk) 20:29, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

I'd just leave it, Marchjuly it is going to be deleted in a few days anyways and I've watchlisted it to make sure that it is. I've also marked their sandbox for deletion. They are here to advertise their book so they really don't have any sympathy from me. --Majora (talk) 20:50, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
Fair enough. Thanks for taking a look. -- Marchjuly (talk) 20:52, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
The file is currently unused, so I tagged it with {{db-f10}}. --Stefan2 (talk) 21:25, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi Majora. Since you're pretty good with images, I'm wondering if you might have any suggestions on where it might be best to look for a free image of von Harden to use for primary identification purposes in the main infobox. What's currently being used there is File:Otto Dix Sy von Harden.jpg. That file's use in the article was recently discussed at Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2018 June 17#File:Otto Dix Sy von Harden.jpg and I'm fine with the consensus which was established. I just think it would be better to move the painting to the body of the article and replace it with a photograph of von Harden if one can be found. She died in 1963, so I believe the use of a non-free is likely not going to be controversial. The painting is from 1926 so maybe there's something floating around somewhere from a few years earlier which is too old for copyright protection or there is something from a later period whose whose copyright hasn't been renewed which can be used instead so as to keep non-free use as minimal as possible. It might also be informative to see how the Dix's portrait of her compares to how she really looked. Google shows a couple of possibilities like this, but I'm not sure how to find out more about each file to figure out who took it and when. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:11, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

@Marchjuly: As of right now, a non-free rendition of her is fine per our fair use policy. However, if there are any free photos of her, at all, then I'm afraid per my understanding of our fair use rules the painting would have to be removed. Unless there is a dedicated section talking about that specific painting and how it compares to her real self, I don't think it would meet WP:NFCCP #8 and since there would be a free alternative it wouldn't meet #3 either. It is kinda a problem of interpretation how our fair use policy is written. If we find a free photo we have to remove the non-free one we have but since we have a non-free photo it really isn't worth it to look that hard. --Majora (talk) 00:40, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
The painting was discussed in the above-linked FFD, and the close was to keep it. I think it probably can be kept, but I don’t think it’s appropriate for main infobox use. I think that it’s better to have a actual photo of the subject in the main infobox for primary identification purposes, and then move the painting to the body of the article near the discussion about it. What I’m not sure of is whether a free image of von Harden can be reasonably be expected to be found given the fact that she was born in 1894 and would have been 19 in 1923, three years before the painting was painted. I don’t think there would be an issue using a free image in the infobox and keeping the painting in the body of the article. — Marchjuly (talk) 01:27, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
It was only allowed to be kept in the article at FFD because there was no free alternatives, Marchjuly. The second a free use image is found that rationale goes out the window. It would, of course, be possible to craft a new rationale that would potentially satisfy the fair use requirements but that would be up to a new debate.

As for finding a free use photo, that is up to someone to go searching for one, asking around, sending permission request emails, etc. etc. Right now, the fair use photo is fine. --Majora (talk) 01:52, 29 June 2018 (UTC)

Understand. Thanks for input. — Marchjuly (talk) 02:24, 29 June 2018 (UTC)

Review of efforts of mine

I was wondering if you had a spare moment you were able to provide some review in respect of some my recent image patrol efforts?

Your name was recommended to me on the English Wikipedia , IRC chatroom . ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:47, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

Are you looking for a review of anything in particular, ShakespeareFan00? Or just a general "look and see". How far back are we talking? You do quite a lot of work in the file namespace so if we are talking an extended period of time with a general look and see request that might take me a while. --Majora (talk) 01:22, 5 July 2018 (UTC)
Basicly it's whether the do the basic conversion over and leave notifcations to uploaders to claim images is the right approach, some people have seemingly epxressed a view that it's overly pedantic to ask users to claim their uploads, and lazy on my part not to just add the {{own}} and author name indications manually myself. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 01:25, 5 July 2018 (UTC)
@ShakespeareFan00: Are we talking about things like User talk:ShakespeareFan00#File:Salt.sill.jpeg? It would really depend on the situation. Oftentimes people use {{own}} incorrectly and even more so they use it for unambiguous copyright violations. Do I think that perhaps you went a tad overboard with the ones you tagged in that situation? Yes. But that is because it is obvious, to me at least, that those images were taken or created by the uploader. Asking them to actually fill out what is obvious seems a tad much in my mind. There has to be a balance there. Doing that to everyone is too much, especially when it is obvious and there is no doubt as to the proper licensing of the file, but there is certainly a time and place where that would be appropriate. --Majora (talk) 02:17, 5 July 2018 (UTC)

Template:AfC-c:

Well perhaps you'd like to demonstrate the CORRECT fix then? The issue is that it was throwing "Stripped tags" when called from {{AfC-c/eg}}}, in {{AfC-c/doc}}. Converting it to <includeonly> clearly wasn't the right way to do it. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 22:45, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

Also I would strongly urge to voice angry concerns at the people that are deploying the updated parser and expecting us mere contributors to try and clean up the almighty chaos and breakage it's already causing. Thanks for reverting. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 22:47, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
Well first of all your edit didn't close the includeonly tag. It has two open versions. Second, you added a second /noinclude but didn't add another pairing noinclude for the one that was already there. So...you added two unpaired codes which broke everything. --Majora (talk) 22:52, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
Loud sound of head hitting computer desk rapidly :) I must be getting sloppy , that's something I really really should be above. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 22:53, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
Sorry for the quick revert. I could have fixed it myself now that I see what it was but I didn't know what was going on when I saw the breakage and just quickly reverted back to the status quo. --Majora (talk) 22:55, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
Looking at a straightforward tag matching isn't going to work.., This is going to need "demonstrator" mode... Care to implement that? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 23:01, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
And solved... Let me know what you think? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 23:30, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
I was always a little confused at what problem you were trying to solve, ShakespeareFan00. But if you say you fixed it, I'm glad. --Majora (talk) 01:30, 7 July 2018 (UTC)

Responded at MCQ. --Majora (talk) 23:28, 10 July 2018 (UTC)
Thank you.-- Marchjuly (talk) 00:03, 11 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi Majora. I was wondering if you have any opinions on possible copyright status of this image. I don't think the source given for the file is the creator of this content; my guess is that that website probably got it from somewhere else. This has the look of an official portrait of some kind, so maybe it doesn't need to be non-free; it seems similar to File:1977 CPA 4774(Cutted).jpg and File:Il ministro della Difesa dell'Unione Sovietica (1976-1984) Dmitrij F. Ustinov (cropped).jpg. FWIW, the same file is used on Hungarian Wikipedia as hu:Fájl:Konsztantyin Usztyinovics Csernyenko.jpg, but not sure if the source given there is the original source of the image. If this does need to be non-free, however, I don't think it can be kept per NFCC#1 just because it might be better in quality than what's currently available on Commons. Anyway, any ideas you might have on how to found the original source of this file would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:38, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

@Marchjuly: You are correct about NFCC #1. Lower quality photo or not, if a free use image exists, we can't keep it. If it is kept by the patrolling admin I would immediately file a FFD for this. As for the actual copyright status of the image it is hard to say. The image is already all over the Internet and everywhere I look there isn't an authorship attribution. It is certainly possible that the image is free use anyways but I'm having a hard time readily proving that. --Majora (talk) 20:38, 13 July 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for taking a look. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:48, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi Majora. As mentioned by another user in the Jordan Maron talk page, Jordan gave express verbal permission to use one of his images on his Wikipedia page. I'm not aware of Wikipedia's policies regarding copyright permissions, specifically whether provable verbal permission is valid, but perhaps you do. It'd be great to add an image to this page. JETspazTi13talk 05:41, 17 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi again. I noticed you said "for Wikipedia" is not a valid release, but in Jordan's video he did not simply say "for Wikipedia". If you watch the previously linked video, he specifically gives permission to any individual to upload the picture to this Wikipedia page. — JETspazTi13talk 05:55, 17 August 2018 (UTC)

@JETspaz Ti13: "Upload to Wikipedia" is the same thing as a Wikipedia only type release. In order to be used here the image must be under a copyright license that allows anyone to use of modify the image, at any time, and for any purpose (including commercial reuse). Only the copyright holder, which is generally the photographer not the person in the photo, can change an image's copyright license. "Upload to Wikipedia" is neither a copyright license or a proper one that follows all the requirements outlined above. I see that others have given another fan instructions on the article's talk page on how to proceed. As a different matter, please change your signature. It should never have templates like that and it expands down to 9 lines when you use it. Which is against our signature guidelines. If you have any other questions at all please don't hesitate to let me know. --Majora (talk) 11:38, 17 August 2018 (UTC)

Funnybunny44's image

Hi, Majora :). I think you have more experience reviewing images uploaded in wikipedia. User Funnybunny44 uploaded a new Cabello's file. I wanted to know if you can you please review this image? The source redirects to another image on flickr. I'm not sure if this image can be used in the singer's article. Thank you. --Miaow 23:48, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

@Miaow: You were right to remove it. Non-derivative (or non-commercial) restrictions are not acceptable here. In the future you can tag these images for speedy deletion using the template {{db-f3}} (see WP:F3 for more info). Thanks for the heads up! --Majora (talk) 01:28, 22 August 2018 (UTC)

The images I upload are not mine but I make it explicitly clear where they are from. The website they are from says that I am free to: Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format for any purpose, even commercially. Plus the images that I upload are much better quality and better image overall.

Could you please review your edit on Heritage Action? Your claim that the bell put it beyond TOO would seem to be in conflict with the examples seen at Commons:Threshold_of_originality, such as the people in the Nikken logo or the bird in the American Airlines logo. Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. editToken

Hello Majora,

Your script User:Majora/jssandbox.js is no longer functional because it attempts to get an editToken from mw.user.tokens. The script should instead get a csrfToken. editTokens were removed from mw.user.tokens on October 3, 2019 at Phabricator during this edit as they were redundant to csrfTokens.BrandonXLF (talk) 00:06, 25 November 2019 (UTC)

KurdoKardir

Hey there. I just wished to inform you that after four years, KurdoKardir has attempted to return to the Kurdish cinema page and restore his dream form for it. I've reverted their edits, but there's no telling how long that will stick. Anyways, it's been too long and I hope you're well! While I'm at it, I'm going to ping @ReaderofthePack:, to fill her in, as she dealt with KurdoKardir quite a bit back in the day - it's best to have eyes on this matter. DÅRTHBØTTØ (TC) 02:05, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

  • @DarthBotto: Thanks for pinging me - I've put an indef semiprotection on the article. It's been protected five times in the past, last time was for three years. Since they returned a year after the last one expired, I think it's reasonable to expect that they would return if this one wasn't indef. Hopefully this will curtail them, but if not there are other types of protection that can be applied. ReaderofthePack(formerly Tokyogirl79) (。◕‿◕。) 03:18, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:Ovation Brands logo.png.

This image is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the image description page states the source and copyright status of the derivative work, it only names the creator of the original work without specifying the status of their copyright over the work.

Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the original image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. Thanks again for your cooperation. KamranBhatti4013 (talk) 03:37, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Ovation Brands logo.png.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work contained within this image, you will need to specify

  1. the creator of the original work
  2. the copyright status of the original work, usually indicated by adding a licensing tag. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F4 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 03:41, 3 July 2021 (UTC). If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. KamranBhatti4013 (talk) 03:41, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Ovation Brands logo.png. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status and its source. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously.

If you did not create this work entirely yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. You will also need to state under what licensing terms it was released. Please refer to the image use policy to learn what files you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. The page on copyright tags may help you to find the correct tag to use for your file.

Please add this information by editing the image description page. If the necessary information is not added within the next seven days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please also check any other files you may have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. KamranBhatti4013 (talk) 03:42, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

Notice

The file File:Good Energy logo.png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unused. Superseded by File:Good Energy logo.svg.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 12:23, 15 August 2022 (UTC)
